THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR
I am still enjoying the holidays and all the deco-rations in my home, including eight trees. Christ-mas is my favorite holiday - all the lights, special times with friends and family, and hearing peo-ple greet each other with “Merry Christmas”. I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends and are looking toward the new year with peace in your heart.
The Convention committee is finalizing plans for the Alpha Delta State convention on March 24, 25, 26, 2017. Please look for the details and registra-tion form on the website and in this issue of The Voice.
This will be a very busy convention. New Bylaws will need to be ap-proved. Final approval of the Alpha Delta State Ohio Educational Foun-dation will occur along with the election of the first Directors to the Foundation. Election and installation of officers for the next biennium will take place. A new Nominations Committee will be elected. Please remember that your state officers are always here to help in any way. - Patricia

Pride and Honor of Membership
As much as it is an ongoing concern, it is vitally important to cele-brate the membership and leadership within your chapter. As we see the duties and responsibilities as an opportunity to serve, to further the growth of ourselves and our future leaders - leaders in the educational setting and in our organization - we come to recognize the challenge, the enjoyment, the expanding opportunities rather than the drudgery of the experience.
*Do chapter programs and community service promote profes-sional as well as personal growth of women educators?
*Do chapter programs and community service promote excel-lence in education?
*Does your chapter accomplish the vision of being leading wom-en educators who are impacting education not only in your community but worldwide?
These are lofty goals and perhaps not ones that we think of as we plan our programs and community service projects. Yet keeping the mission and vision before us should be guiding what we are doing during and between our meetings. They bring the promise of an exciting, dedicated group of educators bettering themselves and education in their community, state, nation, and the world and thus serve as an impetus to those committed to the significant role of education in our society. As you develop the culture of honor and pride in being a member of Delta Kappa Gamma you will find it easier to encourage and increase membership through retaining, recruiting ad reinstating wonderful women educators.
Membership Committee: Marlene Bolea, State Member; Freda Cook, Beta; Laura Hynes, Omega;
Marilyn Slusser, Delta Kappa; Meier Bauer, Gamma Phi, Chairman

A Red Rose for Alpha Delta State Member,
Alice Chapman on her
Maureen Fitzgerald Leadership Award
Alice Chapman a member of Omicron chapter has been honored with the Maureen Fitzgerald Leadership Award by the Governor's Council on People with Disabilities.
This leadership award honors Maureen Fitzgerald who loved empow-ering youth with disabilities to realize their potential.
Alice started the Ely Chapman Education Foundation in 1999 as an after-school safe haven for young people in grades K-8. Her vision was one of inclusion, welcoming all who desired to attend and making sure that no one was refused because of income. She is particularly highly regarded for her advocacy on behalf of youth with disabilities and em-powering these young people by making them full participants in the daily activities and relationships occurring in daily life at the founda-tion.
Throughout the successes and inevitable defeats that happen, Alice's faith in a child with disabilities never wavered, nor has her faith in all children to become more tolerant and understanding of our individual differences.

Visual and performing arts are a big part of events at the Alpha Delta State Con-vention. One of the many ways we celebrate the arts involves member participa-tion in our Visual Arts Display.
Members are cordially invited to participate in this display which attracts both convention attendees and hotel guests. We invite members who are involved in continuous artistic production, as well as the one-time/first-time artist. Consider showcasing fine, decorative, functional and literary works of art.
The Personal Growth and Services Committee is hosting and organizing this event. Member artists are cordially invited to register their intent to participate in the display.
In order to secure a site and gather the materials needed to display the works, we have set the deadline to submit your intent for March 7th so we can organize a secure site and gather materials to display the works. Please do not arrive at con-vention with items if you have not registered.

D. Educating Children Affected by Lead Toxicity
Dr. Dorr Dearborn – While we have thought that the brain damage from lead was irreversible, this is ignoring the reserve and compensa-tion capabilities of the young child’s brain. A working group convened by the CDC is calling for, 1) the development of early childhood education approaches to address the specific lead-related deficits, and 2) in the meantime, to place these children into high qual-ity early childhood education to help them compensate. S. Understanding Memory Paths: The Process of Differentiation
Dr. Joan Oughton Bucy, Gamma Nu - Educators should understand that teaching can no longer be one size fits all, even if one is asked to use a math or reading program that is scripted. Given that varied memory pathways provide opportunities for varied learning, one of the best ways to differentiate is to let the student tell the teacher how he or she learns, or what methods of teaching best fit the student’s learning needs. Teach-ers should differentiate lessons by developing activities that are reflec-tive of the four memory pathways—semantic, episodic, automatic, and procedural—to ensure that all learn-ers fully comprehend what is being taught and expected of them as learners. (PDU credit)
Third Session cont.
