The Voice O f P e n t e c o s t L u t h e r a n C h u r c h www.pentecost-racine.org

As forgiven children of God, we, the Pentecost Family of Faith, are committed to show everyone Life in Christ.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

September found us “on the move” with Jesus and His Disciples in the Gospel of Matthew. We started

on the shores of the Sea of Galilee as we encountered two demon possessed men near the tombs. From

there we went back across the lake and healed a paralytic man. And lastly stopped for dinner with

Matthew and a few of his closest friends (“tax collectors and sinners”).

Below are the themes and major takeaways from the month of September …

September 6 “Where Are You Going?” (Matthew 8:28-34) Jesus is willing to “go” where no one else seems willing.

September 13 “Rise up and WALK, Glorify God” (Matthew 9:1-8) Sin is the ultimate root of all human suffering and need.

September 20 “Rise up and FOLLOW, Proclaim Jesus” (Matthew 9:9-13) Jesus is calling YOU!!

All this talk of “going”… “walking”…and “following” got me thinking about what happens when we

aren’t moving.

If a person stops moving and just sits sedentary Disuse atrophy of muscles and bones can set in, with

loss of mass and strength.

If water gets stagnant…it can be dangerous for drinking because it provides a better incubator than

running water for many kinds of bacteria and parasites.

And what of our faith? What happens when our faith gets stagnant? We do the opposite of following

Jesus; instead, we get distracted by the ways of the world, our selfish human nature, and fall prey to

false doctrines.

To combat this we take encouragement from the words of St Paul in Titus 1:9:

“(We) must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that (we) can

encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”

- Pastor J

in Sunday school. Though Katy Wagner has

stepped down as co-Sunday school superintendent

(and we will miss her dearly), she has agreed to

continue with attendance and leading the children in

songs. Thank you for all past years of wonderful

service, and good luck and God’s blessings as you

We could learn a lot from

crayons: Some are sharp,

some are pretty, some are

dull, some have weird names,

and all are different colors …

but they all exist very nicely

together in the same box.

Stewardship Corner

The Perks of Giving

Although National Volunteer Week is officially observed in April, every week thousands of volunteers help people in need. As volunteers can attest, sharing one’s time and talents leads to many intangible benefits. New research shows that volunteering and giving also provide physical and emotional advantages. Givers report an improved sense of well-being, lower stress levels, better physical health, an enriched sense of purpose in life and increased happiness. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “It is one of the beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely help another without helping himself.”

Stewardship Report

As our Staffed Nursery started Sept.20, soon we will also see the results of our “Noisy Offering” taken earlier this summer. Robert Barclay is building bookshelves to enclose the nursery area. This will make it easier for the nursery attendant to keep track of children using the nursery. We look forward to seeing this new addition to our nursery area and thank all those who contributed to the Noisy Offering.

Pastor Jacob chose Sept. 26-27 as our Stewardship weekend this year. Our SELC District supplied materials used for the weekend, the Sunday before, and flyer to

come. Our next project will be a “Christmas Stocking.” Use your “stocking” to collect change or bills to be returned in early December – date to be announced. Money collected will be used to buy gifts for our shut ins and others who need a gift.

Stewardship by Action…

Scott Hensel, Billy Wojak, Tim Hasko, Mickey Wojak

Something New has been

added…

You may have noticed that we have added a couple new instruments to our service. Billy and Mickey Wojak will be joining our Sunday instrumentalists, playing saxophone. Their first Sunday service was Sept. 13 – picture above. We’re always glad to have instrumentalists join us on Sundays. If you need music transposed, please let Joyce know ahead of time. Currently we have B flat music ready each Sunday – that would include trumpet, clarinet, tenor sax… We can transpose for other instruments, too, as long as we know ahead of time.

Have you noticed the beautiful flowers lining the walk leading up to church? Thanks to Jodi Barclay for all the work she did to plant them for us. Our church is blessed with all the people who work both inside and outside the church to keep it

beautiful. We have people who cut the grass every week – often the same families. There are people who clean the Parish House and do a little extra around the church building. Thanks to all who help to keep our church and grounds looking their best.

“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too.” ― Dr. Seuss

A Mighty Fortress Is

Our God Often called the "Battle Hymn of the Reformation," Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress"

has been translated into almost every known language, and at least eighty different translations have been made into English! During times when the Reformation seemed lost, Luther would say to his friend Melanchthon, "Let's sing the Forty-sixth Psalm." " A Mighty Fortress" draws its inspiration from Psalm 46. Luther wrote at least 35 other hymns. As a young student, Luther earned money to pay his school fees by singing in the streets of Eisenach. Luther played the lute, and singing always was an important part of his life. "A Mighty Fortress" so captured the spirit of the Protestant Reformation that when Protestant emigrants were forced into exile or martyrs went to their death, "A Mighty Fortress" always seemed to be the song they chose to sing.

~Diane Severance, Ph.D. christianity.com One writer has said that 'Luther translated the Bible into German so God could speak directly to the people; and provided the hymn so that the people could answer God in their songs.'

Wayne and Judy

Ruud

June 20, 1964

We’re quite a little late with congratulations

for this 50th Anniversary but will be adding a page to our Pentecost 50th Anniversary Book. The Ruuds met at a skating rink in Milwaukee and got engaged on Nov. 22, 1963, the evening of the day President Kennedy was shot. Wayne enjoys do-it-yourself projects. He also plays the organ at Skatetown for seniors. Judy enjoys reading and working jigsaw puzzles. Both Ruuds enjoy taking trips. Be sure to check out the Anniversary Book for their full story. Pentecost has had many couples who have celebrated 50 or more years of marriage. If you have 50 or more years and we missed getting your story, be sure to let us know. We’d like to add your story to our book if you’re willing.

It's wonderous what a hug can do, a hug can cheer you when you're blue, A hug can say "I love you so" or "I hate to see you go" a hug is welcome back again and great to see you or where have you been. A hug can soothe a small child's pain and bring a rainbow after rain The HUG, there's just no doubt about it we scarcely could survive without it a hug delights and warms and charms It must be why God gave us arms.
