From Pastor Earnest E. Tate’s Corner
June 2016
I met with 6 members of the Council on May 3rd to focus on our shared vision for Hope Lutheran Church. A light dinner was served by Bob Hanson before the meeting. The idea for the shared vision evolved from the seminar conducted by Rev. Ronald G. Qualley with Fred Heins, Bob Hanson, and I in attendance. During our meeting, the Council refined the input from members of our congregation into an action plan. Bob assigned Theresa Tasker with the responsibility as being the Director of Fund Raising. She will design a process to accomplish the Council’s goal. Other leaders of the Council will be assigned tasks at a later date. This may take more than one session of planning but our mission has a start. Input, suggestions, and words of wisdom are appreciated as we go forward. I believe that our congregation was once in a crisis and survival mode with conflicts but we are turning the corner. We all feel good about Hope and see a positive future. We do have work to be done and the motivation to go forward. I have established a Mutual Ministry (Grievance Team, 7 members); Grace Benway-1st Service, Pauline Granda-2nd Service, Frank Harris-1st Service, Fran Hendertilo-1st Service, Nino Peterson-1st Service, Rudy Pinto-2nd Service, and Roxie Roberts-2nd Service. I am in the process of developing guidelines for discernment and decision making of grievances (misunderstandings, concerns, issues and/or problems) within our congregation. The team will meet and greet and review the guidelines next month. Otherwise, the team will only meet when an issue arrives. Continued on next page…

I am also creating a group for women who grieving after a divorce or death of their spouse. The
information that will be shared is from the National Institute on Aging Information Center. It has
been amended to reflect the grieving of women during a divorce or death of their spouse. I will
provide the information to be used as a guide for discussion. It can also be used to share the stages
of their grief and how they are dealing with each step of their journey. It is also an opportunity to
support one another. I am also suggesting that they set a day and time to meet regularly as a group.
As time progresses they may find someone in the group shares a similar journey, and it may be an
opportunity to meet one on one, but not reframe from meeting as a group, because there will be
others who will be joining the group as time progresses. Remember, this is a support group, where
you assist each other with dealing with loss.
Although this group is meeting at Hope Lutheran Church, the intent is to reach out to the
community. A Bible Study is recommended. It may be done within the context of the Grief Group,
or there is a Bible Study being held at Hope on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. and on Tuesdays at 12:00
p.m.
On May 29, a plaque was presented with the name of 162 individuals who have volunteered at
Hope Lutheran Church. We have enjoyed the volunteer work that has been accomplished by
members of Hope Lutheran Church since the day of its establishment. The hours of labor and
money contributed to the operation of our church are very much appreciated. Although some
names were omitted due to an oversight, there are several plates on the plaque available for
additional names. The plaque is being donated in memory of Dewitt (Dee) Newins. Dee was a
faithful member. He was recognized as one of the Volunteers of the 3rd Quarter 2015 for his
administrative support. Recently, Dee volunteered to be a part of the newly formed Leadership
Team. The plaque will be displayed in the narthex. We will select 3 members as volunteers of the
1st and 2nd quarters in 2016 later this month.
Upcoming Events:
2016 Synod Assembly, Daytona Beach Hilton, June 10-12, 2016.
June 19th Bishop Robert G. Schaefer of the Florida-Bahamas Synod will be leading Worship and
preaching at Hope Lutheran Church. We will have one Worship Service, 10:00 a.m.

Hope’s Library
The book of the month, located in the prayer section, is “The Prayer of Jabez” by Bruce Wilkinson. In
the book, Wilkinson encourages Christians to invoke this prayer for themselves on a daily basis: He
challenges you to make the Jabez prayer for blessing part of the daily fabric of your life. To do that, he
encourages you to follow unwaveringly the plan outlined in the book for the next thirty days. By the
end of that time, you'll be noticing significant changes in your life, and the prayer will be on its way to
becoming a treasured, lifelong habit. "Oh that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory!
Let your hand be with me, and keep me from the evil one." And God granted his request.
1 Chronicles 4:10 Members of the church have donated Christian books, especially from the library of Barbara Flinn and
some from Nan Billings. The bookcase is in the music room, opposite the office. Books may be
borrowed except for the Bible Reference books. They may be used to answer bible questions if you are
a teacher or seeker of God’s word.
It is an honor system. On the top shelf is a clipboard, write your name and the name of the book on the
sheet of paper provided. When you return a book place it on the top bookshelf in the provided box.
You can visit the library before services or after the late service or during the week. The church is open
Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Another bookcase has been obtained and you will see more spacing between the categories.

Garden Party – Music for Hope Concert
The 1st Hope’s Hands concert in May, was an evening of great music, good food and
wonderful fellowship. The concert had some great Christian bands, including our own
CROSSTREET band. The garden party was earlier in the evening of our kickoff “Music for
Hope” concert. We learned about different varieties of spinach, and got to taste them. We
also learned what types of vegetables are best to plant in the summer in Florida. The evening
was enjoyed by all who attended.
Growing Healthy Kids
This is the first harvest of tomatoes from the
community gardens. This community
garden/outdoor classroom will feed the hungry,
grow fellowship and relationships while teaching
horticulture and God’s Word. The harvest was
given to Sarah’s Kitchen of the Treasure Coast.
Volunteers are needed to help weed, water, plant
and harvest. It is a great way to learn how to
grow food in South Florida. You can call 772-
912-1682 or email [email protected]
Prayer Group
A daily prayer group has been formed called
“31 days of Prayer for Hope”. They meet daily
at the church at 8:30 a.m. They are praying for
the church, the people of Hope, and our
community. There is a booklet that was written
and if you are interested in receiving one please
contact the church office or email
Day 24 – Read: Philippians 1: 9-11
Almighty God,
We come to you in the name of Jesus, as a
congregation asking for spiritual eyes. We pray
for discernment in all situations. Help us grow
as a church, to grow in love, a love that
abounds more and more with real knowledge
and discernment. Let us strive to be Christ-like
in every way and everything we do. May the
community know we are Christians by our love.
We pray that You will help us perceive what
will bring You glory and praise in everything
we do. We pray this through the power of the
Holy Spirit. Amen

Painting
This limited 1st edition painting is displayed in our
choir/library room across from the church office. The
award winning artists name is Helen M. Terry. She was
born in New York and became a Floridian in 1954. She
lived in Fort Pierce, where she was a charter member
and three term past president of the Fort Pierce Art
Club. One of her most famous portraits of Jesus,
pictured here, is called “This I do for You” is
beautifully displayed in the Vatican. She is also known
for her Biblical portraits, 39 of them now displayed at
the Community Methodist Church in Fort Pierce.
Helen’s craft developed initially because of the interest
her first grade teacher showed in her work. Helen writes, “For centuries artists have interpreted the
agony of Golgotha. I too, have wondered what it was
like to have witnessed this world-changing event. I
wanted to look into His face and see what was there.
This painting is my vision of His expression – not focusing on the agony, but on His
purpose, passion, and overcoming Love, I heard His words, This I Do For You” as the
painting took shape. I had no model, but in a two-hour period, the image emerged and was
completed.”
His dual nature – God and Man – is expressed by a subtle variation of the artist’s palette.
The left side of His face reflects His divine nature by the use of heavenly colors of blue,
lavender and white, while on the right side, earthly tones of gold, brown and yellow portray
His physical being.
The tear symbolizes God’s great, forgiving love for mankind. The red blood shows His
suffering and commitment. While the cross and crown of thorns are visible, the most
compelling feature of the painting is His eyes which look at us, drawing our hears near as He
asks “What will you do for me?’
Surrounding His face are “radiant beams from heaven afar” – not the typical aura or halo, but
shimmering bolts of light which heighten our awareness of the energy and power we derive
from His living light.
This is the living Jesus, the Christ of God, reminding us that we, too, have a mission in His
world.

WORSHIP LITURGY
The content of worship liturgy is actually a summary of the gospel. We could even say it is
the Bible message set to music and liturgical text. The biblical message is sung, prayed,
proclaimed, and enacted.
Following is a list of some of the parts of the Lutheran liturgy and the biblical basis for each.
Other parts of the liturgy, such as the Creed or the prayer at Holy Communion, summarize
the great themes of the Bible.

GREAT VARIETY OF HYMNS
Hymn texts also bring great variety of insight and expression. They were written by men and
women who lived before the birth of Christ or at other times up to the present. There are
hymns of Oriental, Scandinavian, African, German, Polish, French, Indian, American, and
English origins. Hymns are included by Methodists, Baptists, Roman Catholics, and
Episcopalians, as well as by Lutherans.
Included are old favorites, as well as contemporary songs which help us "sing to the Lord a
new song." The differing musical styles remind us that God's praise can be sung in many and
varied ways. Many marvelous discoveries await the adventurous worshiper through Lutheran
liturgical worship.
When we have encountered God at work among us in our worship and in our daily lives, our
proper response is a life- long alleluia and a shout at the end of our worship, "Thanks be to
God!" We place our "Amen" over all that the liturgy celebrates. We say, "Yes, it shall be so!"

Salient Points in the Sermon
Rev. Dr. Earnest E. Tate, Pastor
John 17:20-26 on May 8, 2016
• We are called to go to the ends of the earth as messengers of the gospel. Before we are
sent into the world, do we understand the implications of Jesus’ prayer that “they may all be
one?” The last hours that Jesus had with his disciples before he went to the cross ended in a
prayer. The focus of the prayer was his disciples and those who would believe on him in the
future, us, you and me. The prayer does not focus on a single country. It does not involve a
few local churches, or a denomination. The focus of the prayer is the world.
• We must understand those who may be different from us. We must confront the real
issues that are dividing us. Understanding opposing viewpoints does not mean that we must
accept them. We must be determined to keep our own hearts open to gain additional insights
and more understanding. We must practice agape (genuine) love for others who have a
different point of view then ours.
• Family, we need each other. Jesus knew that the church's survival depended upon a
sense of oneness, a feeling of belonging together. Dividing forces may be at work in the
kingdom of God. The motto of the state of Kentucky could well be the motto of the church:
"United We Stand, Divided We Fall."
• In all of our disabilities, being crippled, heart brokenness, abused relationships, beaten
conditions, and God stands beside us and says, "I'm proud of you, you are mine!" And God
picks us up and carries us on through life. That is the glory which Jesus says we are to behold
-- the glory of the love of God for us as individuals.

Acts 2:1-21 on May 15, 2016
• Pentecost was the second of the three great annual religious festivals among the Jews.
It fell fifty days after the Sabbath of the Passover (Leviticus 23:15, 16). The name Pentecost
came from the Greek word for “fifty.” This feast was called the "feast of weeks”, the "feast of
first fruits," and the "feast of harvest."
It was observed as kind of a thanksgiving day on which the first fruits of the wheat harvest
were offered to God (Exodus 23:16). Pentecost was observed also as an anniversary of the
giving of the law on Mount Sinai.
• We are reminded in the story of the Tower of Babel that pride motivated the construction
of the tower and it brought the judgment of God upon the builders. The story is often read on
Pentecost to contrast with the action of God in enabling disciples to "speak in other tongues."
In the Tower of Babel, the people did not understand each other whereas on the day of
Pentecost, the believers understood each other.
• For the first converts, this was serious, the real thing. In Acts 2:43-47, “Awe came upon
everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed
were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and
distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together
in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts,
praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their
number those who were being saved.
• The Holy Spirit might use somebody else to speak to us. It is not uncommon for the
Lord to speak through somebody when we least expect it. Yes, God sometimes speaks through
dreams and visions. The Bible says that he helps us with our weakness and intercedes for us
according to the will of God (Rom. 8:26-27).

John 16:12-15 on May 22, 2016
• Politics seems to bring out the best or the worst in people. They sometime adjust facts
to meet their needs. The actual truth very seldom seems to matter. "Do you swear to tell the
truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?" We hear that phrase a lot.
Can we tell what the truth is by listening to court proceedings? The prosecutor will accuse
and the defendant will deny.
• Sometimes the truth is difficult to grasp because reality is hard to accept. We may
think we want to know the truth but denial comes into play. Surely it is not diabetes, when
we are going to the emergency room. Grandpa is just getting forgetful, the family thinks at
the outset of Alzheimer's disease. Does memory loss happen to everyone sooner or later? A
famous movie scene captures the mood of denial. In a courtroom scene in A Few Good Men,
the military prosecutor loudly demands from the witness, "I want the truth!" The witness
with fierce disrespect yells back, "You can't handle the truth!" Because the truth is so
difficult to discern in most situations in life, it would be useful to have some guidelines to
assist us, when issues facing us are of importance.
• The focus of our text for this Trinity Sunday is that Jesus knew the truth would be
difficult to determine after he had left the scene. So, Jesus sent another person, a third part of
the personality of God, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is an ongoing witness. This is the
paraclete, as John calls It.
• In our text, Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear
them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in all truth" (16:12). We are in a
better situation than his followers to understand the full truth? To them he said, "You are not
ready." To us he says, "we now have the Counselor, the Spirit of truth so that nothing will
remain hidden and all things will be revealed." We are given this gift, that even in the
absence of the physical witness of Jesus, we can listen to the Counselor and hear the truth
that can change the heart and transform the world.

Luke 7:1-10 on May 29, 2016
• In our text, a Roman soldier’s faith shows how and what faith will do. This Centurion
had a servant who was ill. This young man was sick and ready to die. If we have ever clung
to a loved ones that was at death’s door and we felt that they were slowing losing the battle,
then we may know this centurion sense of helplessness. Do we love folks who live outside of
our environment? This man must have been a very unique individual for the elders to be
willing to approach Jesus on his behalf. They informed Jesus that this man is a person of
integrity, he is well liked by the Jews, and he is worthy of Jesus’ help. This man used his
money, his reputation, and his influence to build a synagogue. This Centurion consciously
chose to participate in what God’s work was doing.
• In contrast, according to George Barna, a church statistician, he reports that adults who
regularly attend church (that is at least once a month), 37% did not give a dime to a church in
the last year. Among those whose church giving has declined, 24% have stopped all giving to
churches. The average donation by adults who attend protestant churches is $ 17.00 a week.
What is our relation with God based on our giving?
• Are we impressed with this Centurion who used his money, his reputation, and his
influence to build a synagogue, doing God’s work? Are we impressed with his humility? If
this Centurion with very little spiritual instruction had that kind of faith in God’s word, how
much greater should our faith be? Where is our faith? Whatever we ask and believe, God will
provide. Our faith allows God to do for us and with us what we could never do by ourselves.
What is our relationship with God? Are we willing to trust in God and God alone? Jesus
loves us.
