From Our Pastor

“New.” I see that word used a lot. Tide comes out regularly with a “new and im-proved” soap. It makes me wonder just how bad the old Tide was when I was using it. Ford changes some small item on its truck and suddenly it’s a “new” Ford pickup. Hmmm, I like my old pickup thank you. We wish everyone a “happy new year” each January only to discover that all of the old problems are still here.

The Bible promises that when we turn our lives over to Jesus, a new person is created but when I look in the mirror, I just see the same old Randall. The Bible goes on to say, “the old has passed away, behold all things become new.” Then why am I still struggling with the old temptations?

I think we may have over used that word, “new.” Or maybe we have just misused or misunderstood the “new” part. I have to remind myself that the Bible also says that we are to, forget those things that are behind us and strive toward the goal that God has for us in Christ Jesus. BUT GOD, I like some of those old things in my life! …Hmmm, I may have just discovered some-thing here. Could it just be that I am the problem and not the word, “new?” Maybe, if I truly wanted to be the new creature as promised, then I would stop looking back and hanging on to some of the old stuff. Then, maybe God could finish His work within me and I could really become that new person.

Just maybe, when we wish people a “happy new year,” we are not just giving them a celebratory greeting but we are, in fact, suggesting that they forget the old year and their old life and allow God to bring about the change within them that would spring forth the “new” life of fulfillment, purpose, and joy just as promised. So, if I am correct in this astounding theological breakthrough, then everyone I say to you, “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

See you Sunday,

Pastor Randall

A New Year; A New School; A Refreshed Teaching Staff!

At St. Paul’s UM Preschool, we continue to grow, to change, and to develop. First, a great thank you to Pastor Randall for his leadership. He supports our school by offering weekly preschool chapel, where he teaches and sings using sign language. The students are learning how to be “still,” and reverent in Chapel. Second, another huge thanks to the Preschool Committee. They offered wonderful fundraising ideas, thanks Gail, and saw their ideas through. They always keep the school on track and monitor best practices. They pushed to update equipment and bring us into the 21st century. Third, shouts out to Brian Mitchell for keeping our finances “straight.” He sends reports to Pastor and to PS Committee, as well as to me. This gift of time frees me to be with teachers and students and we are grateful to Brian for using his time and talents for our school. Last, a huge thank you to Sue and Judy in the office for all of their support. I appreciate our social media presence and photos, which both ladies stay on top of. And John Allen and SPRC, thank you for always supporting all of us in our program development. How blessed we are to have such a wonderful team at St. Paul’s.

With that being said, we have a few items that church members might want to help with. If you know anyone with children’s riding toys who want to donate, please tell Jo and she will go and retrieve their donation. Another item we need help with is to share the word of our school. We need to enroll a few more students. Please stop by the front office and pick up a handful of school business cards and hand these out. Again, keep a few business cards and when you are in the grocery or at Gibson’s or in a restaurant and see a family with young children, share a business card. This is our strength in marketing our school – one on one, and one by one. Jo is visiting other Sunday School classes in an attempt to increase our enrollment. Every teacher at the school feels like this program represents a true ministry: small classes led by certified teachers. We are these children’s first impression of “school.” Their public school impressions at five will be drastically different; they will be one student amongst 22 students and one teacher, most likely, without a teaching assistant. We offer ten students with one teacher and one teach-ing assistant. We are gifting these children hands-on lessons in counting objects, matching ob-jects, mastering sight words for life long successes in reading, with art projects, religious educa-tion, and music education on Fridays. I am so proud of this program. Master teaching happens each and every day at St. Paul’s UM Preschool. We are now looking at curriculum for next year – a true, improved, all-inclusive curriculum, and we ask that you pray God leads the perfect information into our school. Thank you for your support.

Stop by and visit the children. We guarantee they will brighten your day. Happy 2019!

Thank you for your support of the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Tx. For the month of December. They receive no funding from church apportionments and rely solely on

endowments and church and individual gifts/donations.

As always, we begin our monthly mission emphasis calendar for the new year with our good friends at CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry). CAM is operated by a coalition of more than forty churches here in Kerr County and serves the people of our area with a food pantry, a used clothing shop and limited financial aid which helps pay utility bills and first time prescription costs. CAM also hosts monthly food fairs in the parking lot of the facility and other activities during the year. This wonderful organization depends completely on private and organizational donations to meet operating costs and to continue to serve our community. Our congregation has been very generous in supporting CAM throughout the year but in January, we make it our special point of emphasis.

Thank you, in advance, for supporting this ministry and its outreach in this community.

Blessings,

Dave Rush

Emmaus News Corner #44

Happy New Year 2019! What was your New Year’s Resolution? To lose

weight and exercise? To be the best Christian friend ever? To attend the

Emmaus Community Gatherings with a friend? To talk to church

members about a Walk to Emmaus? All would be great.

We are starting a new year with two walks scheduled. The Men’s Walk

HC #65 will be Thursday May 2nd through Sunday May 5th. The next

Women’s Walk HC #66 will be September 19th through September 22nd. It is never to early to con-

sider going on a Walk or to talk to a friend about going on a Walk. Let’s get talking and get some

more St. Paul’s members on board and ready to get their walking shoes on!

The first Hill Country Emmaus Gathering of 2019 is on Monday, January 6th at First Methodist (St.

Paul’s South UMC). The enchilada meal provided will be at 6:00 (bring sides or a dessert) and the

service will be at 7:00 pm. Keep that New Year’s resolution. Join us for a great meal, fellowship and

a praise worship hour to our Lord.

See you on January 6th at First UMC at 6:00 P.M.

De Colores! Ruth Strackbein

Welcome Aboard Pat McShane & Erik Strickland!

Pat is our new Church Administrative Assistant who took over in

the office for Judy as she transitions into a role coordinating

technology in the church.

church and preschool.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Christ Crew Youth

Group!

We were also very pleased to be able to help with the Hanging of the Greens and

the Christmas Eve service this year! It was a very special evening filled with the

hope of the birth of Jesus and celebrating the anniversary of the song

“Silent Night”.

We have many fun events planned for January beginning with a New Year’s Eve Lock-in! Permission slips are in the box outside of the church office if you need one! Permission slips and paperwork for our Midwinter Retreat is also due by January 1,

2019. Please contact Susie Bonner for more details!

January will be a busy month for the Crew as we get ready for our first Midwinter Retreat and our special Youth Led Service in February.

We will also be hosting a Senior Sweetheart Dinner and Dance on Sunday, February 10th so

be sure to look for your invitation soon!

We really got into the season by being salty and lit, the salt of the earth and the light of the world. One way we did this was with our annual gifting to our special members of the congregation who are not able to get out an about like they used too. The Crew made some yummy hot drink mixes, peppermint cocoa, chocolate coffee, and orange spice tea, and delivered the presents along with some Christmas cheer!

Our Kingdom Kids have gone

undercover this Christmas season and

have been on the look out for people who

they can serve and give too. They helped

make some yummy, winter drink mixes to

be given to some special members of our congregation that are not able to

get out as often as they would like. They also made some special wreathes to

hang in the Fellowship Hall to help “deck the halls”!

They finished off the season with a different

version of the White Elephant gift exchange,

where they chose gifts for each other in-

stead of themselves during our annual Birth-

day Party for Jesus! We celebrate the gift of

His birth this season and the salvation for all

He gives to us.

The Kingdom Kids will kick off

the new year on

Wednesday, January 9, 2019!!

It is going to be an exciting year star-

ing off with a new adventure into learning rhythm cups for our youth

led service in February.

As always, thank you so much for your support and your prayers

for our Kingdom Kids!

The Memorial Committee received a beautiful thank you letter from the Preschool and

Preschool Committee which we would like to share here:

Dear Memorial Committee,

On behalf of the Preschool and Preschool committee we wish to

thank you for your generous gift. Your generosity will make it

possible to update the computer for the Preschool. The new

computer will replace our aged computer that struggles to keep

up with a growing school and staying abreast with the newest classroom innovations. The

new computer should last the school for years to come. Your generous gift will also allow the

school to keep the older computer for the staff to use for simpler projects. We all wish to

thank you. This gift is greatly appreciated by many for now and years to come!

May God bless each of you for your kindness.

Gerry Reinhardt
