It’s Easter for all of May and even a tiny part of June!

I wish that we could keep the excitement of Easter Sunday continuing for all the Sundays of Easter. But for many that’s asking a lot. It’s such a relief to get to May. In March when we still were experiencing temperatures below zero I simply reminded myself of the promise of May, it’s just two months away! And now May is here! What a relief. Some of us are suffering activity fatigue, including worship fatigue. There have been school and community activities, extra worship services, families have been expending energy in many different directions. I encourage you to take some time, pour a cup of coffee, and reimagine May. And think about Easter! It takes some time to come back to life again. I learned a surprising lesson when I started in the ministry and was a pastor in Illinois. Things were piling up at a rapid pace. I was in a panic. I figured that I had about 12 hours of work and four hours to do it in and these were major do or die things! I was stressed. Since I knew that I was sinking anyway I made the irrational decision to do centering prayer. This is prayer that is quiet and simply rests in God’s presence. I did this for a half hour. I put the demands on myself out of mind and just breathed as I remembered that God was there. I felt loved and supported. The surprise came when the half hour was finished. I was no longer panicking. It was like a way opened through all that stuff and a path appeared that I hadn’t seen before.

Janene Papendick reminded us at Monday evening Yoga to hold onto a spiritual focus. I’ve talked and written about this in a couple of places but it doesn’t hurt to repeat it here. Each day find a place where you can sit quietly for 15 minutes. Take time to write down the things that you are thankful for. Get outdoors for at least a few minutes. Recall and give thanks to God for the way God is guiding and supporting you through life. The busier we are the more important it is to do this or something like this. And think about this season of Easter that continues through Sunday June 1, because Easter Sunday isn’t always enough to bring us to life.

Little Lambs Preschool

It’s hard to believe that this

is already our last month of

preschool! This year has

gone by so fas. It has been

such a joy to have had such

a wonderful group of

children. During April, we

talked about Easter and the

Easter story. We made

some beautiful crosses. We

also talked about Spring

and bugs. The school year

will wind down with more

bugs. During our final week

of school we will

spend a day out

at Storybook

Land and have

a “Celebration

Program”.

Easter Breakfast

This year’s Easter Breakfast was fantastic! Thank you so much to Phyllis and Duane Donat, Rosemary and Tom Eisenbeisz for all of your help. Also thank you to all the youth and parents who volunteered and worked the breakfast. And thank you to all who donated items to the meal. It was a great fundraiser and we are grateful for all of the sup-port for those youth who will be attending camp and the high school mission trip to Minneapolis.

Prayer Vigil

The first Good Friday Prayer Vigil was a huge success. Thank you so much to all of those who came to the church and prayed. We had a great turn out and it was awesome to join together in prayer, worship, and fellowship throughout the night. It was such a blessing to have ten youth gathered together trying different prayer styles. Special thanks to Charlie Sersen, Mallory McDonald, and Alyssa Weber for their leadership and help through-out the night. I hope that you will consider

joining us again in the future!

Developing Leadership: The Search Continues for a President Elect

We are looking for the right person to be president-elect. That person will take over as president of the congregation in January 2015. It’s an important position. It requires a person of faith who lives a life of love toward others and is committed to the church community. We need a person who is positive, an encourager, who is able to discern the doors that God is opening to us as a congregation. This person will work with the pastors as we team together to determine the priorities of the church. At this time our priorities include three areas of focus. First is to bring in as we provide inspirational worship opportunities. Second is to build up through faith formation for youth and family ministry that increase a passionate spirituality. The third is branching out to people in the community or people who don’t gather with us at worship. Our current president, Jim Seeber, has been instrumental in providing resources to sharpen a focus on worship and to provide significant improvements in worship. What is the life of the president of the congregation like? There is a public side. The president leads the church council meeting with an agenda that is put together a few days ahead of time. The president also communicates with the congregation especially at set congregational meetings. The president meets regularly with the Administrative Pastor and we work together on administrative details. The president-elect is present at these activities and thus moves into the role of being the president in the following year.

The president-elect joins a monthly meeting to plan the council agenda before the council meeting. The president-elect is a member of the executive committee which is a leadership group of the church council. The executive committee is comprised of the president, the president-elect, the treasurer, and the secretary. This group together with the administrative pastor prioritizes what comes before the church council. The president-elect, along with the administrative pastor, the current president and the most recent past president is a member of the staff affairs committee. This group communicates with the staff and helps with decisions made in the area of staffing.

Over the past two years we have put together several resources to help people effectively carry

out these areas of responsibility. We do this work as a team. This can be very satisfying work. Who do you know that would be gifted in these areas of

leadership? Who do you know who lives life for others and who has a living faith in God? Please help us assemble names of qualified people that we should continue to talk with.

May Faith Practice - Study

The May Faith Practice emphasis will be on Study. There is much joy in learning a new thing. I love my life of study. I also know that learning isn’t a passion with everyone. Indeed, Ecclesiastes 12:12 says, “Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.” I’ve been there and done that. But imagine a time when a person learns nothing new! What is it like to go week

after week and learn nothing new about God and about this wonderful creation that God has gifted us with? What would life be without wonder? The Psalmist writes, “Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.”

2014 Good Shepherd Scholarship Recipients

The Scholarship Committee is proud to announce the recipients of the 2014-2015 Good Shepherd Scholarships. They are: Taylor Ellingson, Ashley Hellwig, Carly Peterson, Emily Punt, Erin Punt, Ashley Rook, Miranda Rook, Wyatt Sombke,

Elizabeth Wensmann, Taylor Wensmann, and Amanda Witlock. We, the committee, would like to thank the congregation for supporting Dollarship Sunday, where we collected $1750.00 to help support our students further their education. The Scholarship Committee

Summer Worship Hours begin Memorial Day Weekend, May 25. That means that on May 4 and 18 our worship will be at 8:30am and 10:45am. On May 25th the summer hours take hold and worship will then be at 8:30 and 10:00. But take note an important exception is May 11, Celebration Sunday. On this day we will Celebrate our Sunday/Wednesday school youth and programs and will celebrate our graduates. To do that we will gather together for one service only at 9:30am on May 11.

Mark your calendars now and remember that there will

be only one service on May 11, Celebration Sunday, at

9:30am. There will be a brunch on that day following

the service.

Where Does Your Piece Fit?

You are an essential piece of the Good Shepherd Team. Time and Talent sheets have been distributed during services on Apr 27th and May 4th. Please spend a quiet moment pondering the gifts God has given you. We are all unique and possess different talents from one another. Consider helping Good Shepherd make all the pieces fit so our mission statement is indeed a reality. This is a perfect opportunity to become acquainted and develop friendships with the wonderful people that make up our faith family. We are requesting Time and Talent Sheets be returned to the church by May 10th. Any questions? Please call Deb Aman – 229-0785 or Rosemary Eisenbeisz – 380-4460. Thank you for making Good Shepherd the awesome church that it is. The Nominations Board

Check out the new books on the shelf above the desk in the library. Among these books you will find three books written by Dave Pelzer – A Child Called “It” ,The Lost Boy; and A Man Named Dave. These books are about the terrible abuse that Mr. Pelzer suffered when he was a child. They alert us to the child abuse that many children suffer and how adults will look the other way not wanting to get involved or if they do call the authorities, it might be looked into but nothing is done. This compelling story will awaken you to the truth about child abuse and the ability we all have to make a difference. We hope that many of you will read these books.

There are many books checked out that have not been returned to the library. These books were checked out in March, April, November and December of 2013 and also in January and February of this year. We ask that you return these books to the library as soon as possible. Books are only to be kept for two weeks, but may be checked out for another two – then they are to be returned to the library so others may read them.

Volunteer Worship Team

We are assembling a volunteer worship team to plan, prepare for, and debrief our worship experience. This summer Pastor Liz and myself will take a retreat to plan the themes and images for worship for six months in advance. This will be the foundation to plan the worship, the music, the art, the publicity, and other details for our worship service. This team will be made up of the pastors, a facilitator to gather us together and keep the agenda, the music coordinator, the person who does the bulletins and communication, a person to track statistics, attendance, and survey information collected, the person who prepares the PowerPoint presentation, people who are interested in the visual art side of worship, the musicians who lead the music for the services, and creative idea people. This team will work with the themes and direction provided from the pastors. Our first meetings will be in the summer which is the perfect time to think about Advent and Christmas!

We have arrived at the Easter Season of our church year. The journey from Lent to Holy week was reflective and inspirational leading us to Easter. Our Cantata on Palm Sunday led us through Christ’s path to Easter. It touched many of us. The prayer vigil was a quiet and special time to pray, read meditations, to hear messages through song, and a time to listen to God. We are very blessed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church to be surrounded by those who reach out and serve others. You are a caring, musical congregation, full of wisdom and examples of Christ in our midst. I see God in each one of you and I hope you can see God in me. I’d like to thank those who were involved in the Lenten services and Holy week. This includes accompanists, choirs, directors, other musicians, pastors, scripture readers, ushers, altar guild, greeters, and those who ran the sound board/ screen presentations. We treasure all who are present at the services and events at the church. Thank you for your encouragement and kind words in our journey with Christ. Blessings to you this spring, Nancy Ohnstad, Coordinator of Music

The Good Shepherd Food Pantry appreciates your donations.
