Club President
2014/15
Kevin Delaney
Hi All,
At our last meeting we had the pleasure of listening to Keith
Baldwin from Luxfield Communications, he gave us a brief
understanding of how the communication sector has
progressed not just here in Bundaberg but around the
world.
Just on the note of Guest speakers we also had the great
privilege to listen to a very special lady from PNG.—Josie
from We Care, who spoke about the poverty in which the
majority of people including children live in PNG. The chil-
dren’s schooling, clothing, food, water, health and safety are
in very short demand.
In saying that I realised that our listening skills and decorum
were in short demand while both Guest Speakers were at
the podium - please let’s show them the respect that they
deserve in future.
Next week we will be holding our AGM at our club
meeting venue, please attend to be involved in your club.
Just a quick reminder that our Bollywood Curry Night which
is part of The World’s Greatest Meal to help end Polio is on
Friday 24th October. Tickets must be pre sold and are
available from Bhavana and Sue.
thanks again -
Kevin Delaney

Club News
Cal and Cliff are back from their travels and shared the news that they were able to track the recipient of the prosthetic hand Cal and Bhavana built in May. It went to a man who lives in one of the villages that has received a water pump from our club. PDG Terry Daley, who is with a RAWCS team in Cambodia, fitted the hand last week. Cal has asked whether the club will support a further $1200 to provide more wells to other villages—this will be discussed at the next Board Meeting.
Vince didn’t fall off a mountain during his Kokoda Challenge and has returned safely. He has lots of stories and photos which we’ll try and schedule for a meeting soon.
Our Bollywood Curry Night is
part of The World’s Greatest
Meal to End Polio on Friday
October 24—World Polio Day.
Tickets can be purchased for
$25 from Bhavana and Sue,
and we’d like as many of your friends as possible to
come along too! Thanks to club members who have
already bought tickets to the Meal we have already
raised $600!
We still have lots of tickets to sell .
**Tickets must be purchased in advance—none will
be available on the night.
White Ribbon Day Breakfast will be our club meeting
on Tues Nov 25 at the RSL.
Members are encouraged to
attend—tickets $25 can be
purchased from Chiquita’s Boutique. Our club has
sponsored this major event since 2009, so please
support.
There are approximately 60 boxes of books waiting
to be transported to storage for our January book
sale at Bargara. Cliff has kindly arranged for a
remote to access our new storage shed over East.
This will be kept with Sue at the Library.
A club stall has been booked for the Pageant of Lights on
Thurs Dec 4 to sell calendars and possibly Christmas
Cakes. Club members will be asked to help there during
the Pageant.
Ian cleared out our Rotary
donation box at the Airport
yesterday and gave Brant
some counting to do. Funds
will alternate between
Community and Foundation
accounts.

This Week
We had a great meeting this week, with a number of
guests and visitors learning more about Rotary.
Josie Dromenge from WeCare in Port Moresby talked
about their work with vulnerable
women and children in the
communities around Moresby. Josie
presented President Kev with a
lovely Bilum and certificate thanking
the club for their support.
Last year Ian and Jean hosted
Sandra Ibene also from WeCare,
while she completed a work
placement at the YMCA.

WeCare does, visit their Facebook page:

International Toast
was from Lyn Toft this week to the Rotary Club of
Queenstown, in District 9980. Club President is
Harvey Bourne, and the club meets same day and time
as us, at the Wild Thyme Restaurant. They have club
positions such as the Speaker Seeker, the Sherriff and
the Club Almoner. One of their recent projects is the
Queenstown Community Rotary Challenge, which
challenges the community and others to support one
of their members who was paralysed down his left side
after a freak skiing accident. They have also held
potluck dinner and blind wine tasting to raise funds for
Foundation, and recently presented $15,000 to
Queenstown Lakes Family Centre for Community
Clinics.
Guest
Speaker
this week
was Keith
Baldwin, owner of Luxfield Communications.
Keith is a Bundaberg boy, and worked with
4BU and TV in his early years before starting
Luxfield. He has built studios around
Queensland, and worked for Ericsson building
digital microwave link networks all over
Australia. He moved into telecommunications
in Bundaberg and started Luxfield with 1
employee, which has grown to 30 employees
and a presence in Hervey Bay and
Maryborough as well. Luxfield provides a
diverse range of services, from lockdown and
duress alarms to fibre optics and CCTV.
Keith talked to the club about the future of
telecommunications with digital information
and the rollout of the NBN scheduled in
Bundaberg in early 2015.
Keith mentioned that he and his company also
support some sporting organisations and
community organisations, and he is a member
of the Bundaberg Wine Club.
Keith was pleased to see a lot of familiar faces
in the club this week, and club members kept
him talking with questions about health
aspects of smartphones, microwave burns,
safe browsers, privacy of information and
technology providers.
