This slide shows the impact of our cooperative investments. The top blue line shows the number of searches performed in our Abstract and Index databases Our students and faculty members have performed over 66 million searches during the 10 years for which we have statistics from fiscal year 1996 to June 30, 2005.

And, as you know, our priority has been to increase the number of academic full text journals for our members in the last several years, and for those we count the number of journal articles viewed by our members. This continues to increase and for the year fy 96 to fy 05, our students and faculty have viewed 21 million articles. Last year alone they viewed 13 million articles.

This slide makes it all worthwhile -- our students and faculty are using the VIVA resources and the growth is impressive. Remember, in 1995, many of our colleges if not most -- Did not have many computers in their libraries public spaces, Indeed, Internet connectivity for the libraries at the 2-year schools and even some of the 4 year schools was minimal, and Very few dorms or offices were wired.

The picture has certainly changed during VIVAs 12 years.

VIVA MEMBERS (map)This includes all of our 39 public institutions and your Virginia alma maters (including all 6 public doctoral institutions, all 9 public 4-year colleges and universities, and all 24 public 2-year colleges and universities). In addition, our consortium includes the state Library of Virginia and 30 private not-for-profit colleges and universities participating as full members. We serve an estimated 375,000 students and faculty throughout the CommonwealthThis has enormous advantages to all of our students and faculty, but particularlyfor our faculty at the smaller institutionsour students who will transfer from one of our 2-year schools to a 4-year school, and students in distance education programs. It doesnt matter if someone is a student at a doctoral institution, Norfolk State University, or UVAs College at Wise in the far reaches of southwestern Virginia, they have access to the same VIVA resources as all other students at our 39 public institutions. Our licenses with the vendors also allow walk-in access at all of the member institution. With a community college within 40 miles of every citizen, we provide access to quality research materials and information resources all across the Commonwealth. 34VIVA reflects higher education in Virginia with its decentralized structure. The work of VIVA and the expertise that makes VIVA work are distributed across the state. This allows us to balance the work and avoid duplication of effort every school contributes in some way, to make decisions that reflect common goals and to specialize by developing centers of expertise.

For example, lets look at the map of VIVA members to see just how distributed our services really are. The procurement office is at James Madison University on the western side of the state, The general VIVA listserv is maintained by Virginia Tech in the southwest region, A colleague at the College of William and Mary near the Chesapeake Bay, maintains the list of all IP addresses for us, The VIVA home page is maintained at VCU in Richmond, andWe have several full-text databases loaded at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. And the VIVA central office is at George Mason University in northern Virginia. Of the $10.4 million annual budget, we project that 57.7% will come from the General Assembly, 23.6% will come in the form of cost sharing by the public institutions and 18.7% will be in the form of cost sharing by the nonprofit independent institutions. Of the total projected expenditures from all sources, 92.1% will be spent to support VIVAs electronic collections, 4.3% will support document delivery, less than 1% supports travel and training for our members, and 3% supports central administration of any kind.3731These are our fundamentals:By providing equitable services, we can level the playing field for all of your constituents whether they attend the schools in your district or any of the public institutions across the Commonwealth.

VIVA is definitely a sharing consortium, dedicated to meeting our students s and faculties research and instructional needs through our electronic collections and our valuable print resources. We couldnt keep our administrative costs as low as they are without the volunteer efforts of the library directors and the member librarians. Finally, over the past 9 years, we take pride in knowing that we have created extraordinary value from the Commonwealths investment and we certainly hope to see that continue. And Ill give you some examples of each of these points.
