    Brows & Lashes

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or over-groomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed speci-mens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options!

Most of us ladies and the odd gent too need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and thread-ing methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks.

A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consul-tation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweez-ing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows its time to move on to the eyelashes.

There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually work-ing! My daughters naturally

long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a

new mascara. But what else is on offer?

Tinting is an option if your lashes are particu-larly fair, and its not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friends son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up.

Finally, how about having eyelash exten-sions? This is one of the UKs fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

I was born with my dads eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and Im resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was

Now is the time of year where many of us are getting ready to take a well deserved break leaving the UK to fly off to exotic places around the globe. However, for some the thought of lounging on some sun drenched beach or sip-ping cocktails by the pool is tainted with negative thoughts and feelings about how they are going to get there. The thought of flying fills some people with absolute dread and merely thinking about getting on a plane can cause anxiety and distress. Those who have a flying phobia otherwise known as aviophobia may have an idea as to what caused the problem whilst others are at a loss to understand why they feel the way they do. Actually what is at work here is a part of the brain called the amygdala whose job is to sound the alarm when it detects potential danger. Although it serves a crucial purpose in times of genuine danger there are times when it overreacts and gets in the way. So what can be done to alter this naturally occurring stress response when is it unwanted? One simple, yet often effective posi-tive action anyone can take is to regulate their breathing. As we become stressed our sympathetic nervous system kicks in increasing heart rate, sweating and muscular ten-sion. Add in feeling sick and rapid, shallow breathing from the top of the chest and what we have is a recipe for really not feeling good! This can come on very

suddenly and becoming aware of it is likely to make us feel even more anxious leading to a vicious circle aggravating the very feelings we do not want. Breaking this cycle may seem surprisingly simple however using a different type of breathing can counteract the stress response by engag-ing the parasympathetic nervous system using our natural biological braking system to slow things down to a steady, more comfortable pace. Breathing is controlled by taking a shorter in breath and longer out breath regulated by mak-ing a silent mental count of in for 7 and out for 11. Being flight phobic does not have to be a permanent part of life. Seeking help from a professional hypnotherapist may offer a way of improving the travelling experience where the aim is to remove or diminish unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with flying. Hypnosis is a natural state of pleasant relaxation where the therapist works with the client to facilitate the desired change, resolving faulty thinking and freeing the person from unhelpful limiting beliefs. It is possible to move from being flight phobic to someone who is better able to handle negative feelings leading up to the flight, feeling more at ease on a plane and looking forward to a fabulous holiday just like everybody else. If you think you could benefit from hypnotherapy contact Peter Garner full details can be found on www.Petergarner.org

This June, Totternhoe Players have an-other comedy treat for us in store, with the return of the tale of a struggling amateur dramatic society which so en-tertained audiences in 2014. The saga continues with another misadventure for the hapless four wannabe actors, who, in a desperate attempt to beat television at its own game, decide to offer punters: STRICTLY SEX FACTOR (ON ICE).Creativity is a keynote of their produc-tion, especially as they have no money to actually pay for the usual Big Show scenery and props. Will we be treated to the unforgettable sight of Joyce singing in a bathtub again or will Mar-garet dazzle us with a spot of break-dancing? Will Bruno Tonioli give 10 points to any of the contestants? And what does Simon Cowell think of them all? Come along to Totternhoe Lower School and prepare to be amazed! This stupendous main attraction will be supported by a tongue-in-cheek introduction and a memorable finale piece, both devised by our director, Annette Probert.

Performances of Totternhoe Presents STRICTLY SEX FACTOR (ON ICE) by David Tristram, courtesy of Flying Ducks Publishing, will take place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June at Totternhoe Lower School hall at 7.30pm. There will be a Ploughmans meal with dessert during the interval, washed down by your favourite drinks although you do need to bring those yourself! Dont forget the glasses either! Please call 01582 603287 to book your tickets. Tickets for the play and meal cost only 9 each and must be paid for in advance. All proceeds of the interval raffle will be donated to Alzheimers Society UK.

Vauxhall Male Voice Choir choir was born in 1943 during the grim and dark days of World War II when morale was at low ebb. The factory had been turned primarily to the manufacture of tanks and military vehicles and it was by way of an outlet from this travail that a singing group was formed. They were soon entertaining the troops by radio broadcasts and enter-taining locally in charitable concerts. Our history is long and littered with interesting stories and events; we have done most of the things, and more, ex-pected of a male voice choir! Participation in competitions including winning a prize at a Welsh eisteddfod, singing with famous massed military bands in the regular pageants held at the Luton Football Ground during the 1980s, TV

appearances, including Harry Secombes Highway pro-gramme and travelling (usually each year) on away-trips to British and European towns and cities have all featured in the rich life of VMVC choris-ters past and present. The choir is currently 45-strong and sings now mainly for enjoyment and charitable causes. We are always keen to accept new members and regularly take steps by way of recruitment exercises to ensure the future of our organisation. We meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm for practice at St Mar-garets Church, Biscot Mill, Luton and newcomers will be made extremely welcome by our friendly members. Just turn up on a Wednesday or, alternatively contact Brian Matthews on 01525-841077.

Brighter, longer, warmer days are always welcome as it puts a different perspective on daily life, but Im sure youve been noticing more than just a change in the weather in Dunstable. Some of our key projects and developments are coming to fruition, such as the Priory View Independent Living Scheme, which opened recently, and has begun fulfilling one of our top priorities of helping older residents live longer more independent lives.Another major aim of great importance is to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages. Thats why Im really excited about our proposals for a 20.1million com-prehensive redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre, though I hesitate to call it that. Our ambition is to provide the town with much, much more than a leisure centre. Its an innovative model that is completely different to anything we have done before in Central Bedfordshire. Rather than a refurbishment this will be a transformational project which, to all intents and purposes, will be a com-pletely new and bigger building. Only the pool tanks and sports hall structures will remain of the current building, as they were constructed so soundly, but everything else will be new, including the way it will appeal to the interests of a broader spectrum of the com-munity than it currently serves. We want to relocate Dunstable Library into the facility, as

well as Citizens Advice Bureau and various other services. With longer opening hours and greater flexibility, the bot-tom line is that it will be better value for you.So we are confident that the long-term benefits to Dun-stable will be more than outweighed by the short-term inconvenience. This redevelopment, however, will mean the leisure centre is closed for around 18-months. We understand this is not an ideal situation, but we looked into building a new centre elsewhere, though would not guarantee that the current one remains open as it is in such a poor condi-tion. The current location of the centre is another hugely important factor as it sits at the heart of the towns cultural quarter and will contribute to the overall regeneration of the town centre. I can assure you that every step weve taken has been informed by our Leisure Strategy, which was published two years ago after extensive public consultation and is underpinned by studies, research and collaborative work-ing with partners and governing bodies, such as Sport England, to determine the needs of the community both now and in the future.I am therefore confident that what we are proposing is the best solution for all of our residents and will meet the needs of our current and growing population. I would stress that nothing has been decided yet. We are in consultation until July 8th and we are listening.

I know its all a bit trendy at the moment but I love foraging. What do we mean by foraging? Some people get themselves all upset and see it as thieving from the environment and stripping it bare. I guess it all depends on whether you choose to see the glass half full or half empty. To be honest I cant find anything negative about foraging if youre a responsible individual. The benefits to both the mind and body are priceless. Youre outdoors inhaling the essence of the seasonal air while you exercise your body rambling around the urban and rural Bedfordshire landscape. There is nothing like the feel good factor of being outdoors and having a purpose. The thing is when youre engaged in looking for your fodder the familiar becomes unfamiliar. We create a new window to the world that explodes into a magical world of wonder. The everyday walk or stroll creates meaning. It is all about the knowledge. Once you have some knowledge of basic edibles roaming around your own garden, path, or dog walk things begin to happen. The insignificant becomes magnified and we look at the world differentlyhow cool is that? When you find an edible its such a rush without the chocolate and it is free. Whoa Life just gets betterI become so immersed in the landscape I feel like I am in a living painting. I am the subject of my own painting unaware of my audience. I forget the world and my woes and the

focus of concentration is like meditating. I feel embodied to the landscape where I forget what my arms and my legs are doingyep its pure bliss. See the outdoors (both urban and rural) as a free supermarket. I only pick what I need and we are talking a few handfuls. I bag a variety of free edibles on my way back from the shops (avoiding road traffic paths) and make a salad or salsa verde or a pesto with it. Yum what a treat and they are so damn good for you. How good is that? If you care what you put into your body then I guess you care what you put on it. I also make my own astonishing premium face creams and serums specific for my own individual needs. I create my own seasonal hydrosols and add my own vitamins, enzymes, compounds and amino acids to my formulas costing a fraction of the cost of high street brands. I will be offering some half day courses on making premium face creams and serums and also foraging walks with hands on demonstrations on making some amazing wild edible recipes. Take a look at my blog and see some of my stunning edibles and creams. You can email me on my blog (at the top right contact me box) if you would like to book a place and I will reply with dates, times, questions and cost etc. These will take place late spring, summer and autumn. Look out for me perusing around Dunstable. I am often on my knees eyeing up the weeds so stop and chat to me.

Want to try making your own face cream? Here is a basic recipe for a nourishing night cream that anyone can make at home to enjoy. What youll need...

This formula can be swapped with other oils. 90ml Coconut oil90ml Avocado oil150ml Rose water1oz Emulsifying wax30 drops Rose otto essential oil & 15 drops of Rose geranium essential oil (or frankincense)2 drops Vitamin E oil (a good antioxidant)

    How to make...

Create two bain maries on your hob or stove. In one bain marie add your oils (and emulsifying wax) and in the other add your water. Heat both the oils and water to 70-75 C to kill any bacteria using a thermometer. Take both bowls off the stove and slowly add the oils to the water bowl. Using a hand held whisk beat until the oils have been blended with the rose water. Let it cool down and then add you essential oils and vitamin E oil and whisk again. If your mixture looks like it is splitting just whisk again until it cools. When cold, spoon into a sterilised jar and youre doneTa Dah. Label and date it and keep in the fridge. I tend to put it in a large pot in the fridge and then take out what I need in smaller pots for everyday use. It should last quite a while. Make sure you do a patch test before you put it on your face and always wear a sun screen.

Find more information on this formula and all my other recipes, including delicious edibles, on my blog.

Preparation time : 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutesEquipment needed: Wand blender

Rump of lamb, pesto mash, ratatouille, rosemary jusAfter the sweet treat of my last two recipe, heres a great main course dish. The beauty with this recipe, created by St Albans Sopwell Houses brasserie head chef, Dan Woosey, is that you can use the different components with different meals - the pesto mash is a winner, the the simpli-fied ratatouille goes with any other meat or fish. And youll be amazed what adding a little rosemary does to humble gravy granules.

This is also perfect for a dinner party. The whole dish can be prepared in advance, leaving just the sealed lamb to oven roast and the mash, ratatouille and jus to warm up.

Plump lamb rump works really well here but you can re-place it with leg steak or cutlets if your prefer.

How To Make1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/ Gas Mark 4 and marinade the rumps with snipped thyme, rosemary and chopped garlic.

    2. In a hot frying pan, add a little oil and carefully seal the lamb on all sides. Place the steaks on a baking tray, ready to cook.

    3. For the mash, cook the potato chunks in salted boiling water, taking care not to overcook them as this will make the mash watery. Drain and place them back in the pan on a very low heat, stir to remove moisture.

    4. Add the butter and cream to the potatoes. Mash them, season them and finish by mixing in the pesto bit by bit, until the right flavour and consistency is achieved.

    5. For the ratatouille, place a pan on a medium heat, add a little oil then cook the diced veg until just soft (4 or 5 minutes). Season, then add the tomato puree. Cook while stirring for 2 minutes on a low heat, then add the white wine and reduce until nearly evaporated. Add the vegetable stock a little at a time until the vegetables are beautifully coated with the tomato sauce.

    6. For the gravy/jus slowly heat up the gravy and add the snipped rose-mary, simmer for a few minutes and its ready.

    7. To cook the lamb in the oven and cook 12-14 minutes for a nice me-dium rare. Leave to rest at least 6 minutes before cutting and serving.

    8. Assemble the mash and ratatouille on the plate, carve each steak into 2 or 3 even pieces and place on the mash, then drizzle the rosemary jus over for a lovely dinner party dish.

Proms have become increasingly popular in UK after taking off in America! Its a chance for guys to ask girls to prom and girls to get glammed up, a celebration for finishing school after all the exams!

This is also the time of year for summer balls, for those of us too old to be thinking about proms! However, the hair dilemma is still a big one. It can be even more so as we want to look glamorous without going over the top, and this can be a hard balance!

Prom and Ball hairstyles should represent your personality and match all the elements of your look, including your dress, accessories and makeup.

Before you chose your hair style get your dress. This should give you some inspiration on how to have your hair. If you are still not sure ask yourself Do you want it all up?Do you want it half up half down?Is your hair long enough for the ideas you have?

Once you have thought about this, look at magazines and online for more inspiration. This year, braids, waves and buns are very in! For the more mature clients, we would recommend going for something simple and elegant, less is more!

The next thing you need to think about is your budget. Do you need an idea that you could possibly do yourself? or could you go to a salon to have it done? There are lots of tutorials on YouTube if you decide to do it yourself but make sure you keep it simple and have lots of practice!

Our advice here at Flicks & Bangs is, book into the salon. This way you know you will have a style that will last all night! If you are unsure what you would like done then book a trial a few weeks before the big night and the stylist can help you come up with the perfect style!

Proms are the perfect time to go with the fashion! You can pull it off! Its your opportunity to dress up and enjoy the night, perfect for creating memories and being able to look back at the photos in years to come remembering the fashion and hairstyles you had! For balls or summer events, our advice is to stick with classic hair styles. That way you can look back, still love your style and even wear your dress again!

How to give your pet a tablet

PDSA Vet, Vicki Larkham-Jones, said: If your pet is prescribed tablets by your vet then its important to make sure the entire course is taken. Not completing a course of medication can mean it wont work as effec-tively, so your pet could take longer to get better. Its always best to give your vet a call if you think your pet is fully better part way through a course of medication and are unsure if they need to finish it. Some medicines can be given as liquids, but others have to be taken as tablets. Your vetwill explain how often you have to give them, whether they can be crushed at all (some pills are less effective if crushed) and if they can be given with food.

The easiest option, if the tablet can be given with food, is to hide it in your pets favourite treat, or wrap it in a piece of meat. If the tablet can be crushed then you can mix it in with a portion of their food. All the food must be eaten though, to ensure the full dosage is taken. If this doesnt work, or the tablet cant be given with food then it may be best to get someone to help you to give them the tablet. One person should help to hold your pet still; for small pets they can be placed on a surface (with no danger of falling) and stand behind the pet holding them gently but firmly. For larger dogs, they will need to sit on the floor, ideally against a wall, with someone steadying their body and head to limit movement. Have a syringe of water ready in case your pet wont swallow their tablet. The second person should gently take hold of the up-per jaw of your pet with one hand and tilt it upwards; this naturally opens the mouth slightly. Using their other hand, gently pull your pets lower jaw down by placing their fingers on the incisors and drop the tablet onto the tongue, as far back as possible.

Close the mouth and stroke your pets throat in a gentle downward motion until they swallow. Once your pet licks their lips, this is a good indication that they have swallowed the tablet. If they are struggling to swallow you can syringe a small amount of water into their mouth to encourage swallowing. Its a good idea to give your hands a wash afterwards. Giving liquid medication is a little easier, but quite similar. One person should hold your pet still while the other person administers the medication. This is usually done with a syringe (provided by your vet) and squirted into the side of your pets mouth while their head is held level. When youre finished, reward your pet with plenty of praise so that they will associate the process with get-ting something nice at the end! If you are still having problems, then ask your vet practice for more advice the medication may even be available in a different form that is easier for you to give. PDSA is on a mission to educate the nation on pet wellbeing and is delighted that funding from players of Peoples Postcode Lottery is helping the charity to continue this vital work.

From time to time your pet may need to take medicines, but any pet owner will know that this can be easier said than done!
