The current situation across the globe is moving very fast and changing daily. We will continue to update our community in regard to the College’s response to the COVID-19 situation as it unfolds and governments make announcements relevant to our College.

Penrith Anglican College is known for its strong community and it is at times like these that we see this strength through the compassionate, caring and genuine support of each other. This was evident today as we conducted our first Chapel Service live-streamed into each classroom at the College. We work together and support one another. We continue to put our trust in God knowing that He will strengthen us, uphold us and comfort us.

As part of our considered, prepared and responsive approach to this fluid situation, we continue to monitor and reassess each aspect of our College practice in order to provide a safe and supportive environment for our community. We have put several additional, precautionary measures in place this week.

CommunicationIn addition to the College App, email and text messaging, we have launched a parent portal on the College web-site specially for COVID-19 information and communications. Where possible, information will be posted in date order, with the most recent at the top of the page. Communication will continue to be provided through all our normal channels. It is hoped that this portal will assist parents to easily locate information from the College at a later point as well as provide advice from other sources.

The COVID-19 portal is located in the top righthand corner of the web-site within the portal button.

Possible College ClosureThe Prime Minister, based on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, has asked schools to remain open at this point in time. Further, it may be possible that the College is closed individually if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our community. In such circumstances, the length of closure would be on the advice of the Health authorities.

Our staff has been working and planning for the possibility of the School closing, preparing work and testing systems for making work available online. In addition to this planning, Primary staff have been proactive by providing ‘Home Learning’ packs for primary student and additional Library books. Secondary students have been loaned novels to read for future units of studies.

Performing Arts

In Week 7, The Primary Choir performed a beautiful piece by Australian composer Dulcie Holland titled ‘Song of the Fisherman’ at the Primary Prefects Investiture.

This was their debut performance for 2020 and were beautifully led by Mrs Michelle Foreman and accompanied by Mrs Irene Samuels on the piano. The piece featured a peaceful lilting melody with lovely harmonic changes throughout.

Student numbers have continued to increase greatly as students joyfully meet every Thursday lunch time to rehearse in the Tiered Learning Centre (TLC).

Primary Choir is open to all students in Years 3 – 6. If your child is interested in joining, we would love to see them at the TLC next Thursday lunch!

PRIVATE TUITION

Author Visits

We were inspired by the recent Author Visits from Tim Harris and Aura Parker. Tim spoke with our Year 3-6 students and shared some of the origins of his interest in writing stories, where his inspiration comes from, and some funny stories from his childhood. Aura read many of her stories, including her brand new story Goodnight, Glow worms! She also drew a few characters from her stories and shared about how nature inspires her drawings.

Borrowing

We are loaning extra books to primary students during Library classes so they have more to read, in the event that the College closes because of COVID-19. We also suggest using any time to promote the Premier’s Reading Challenge to your children, which opened this month. Usernames and Passwords will be sent out to families before the holidays, but if you have the details from last year, they should be the same. Year 3 to Year 9 students can find their username and password in the Student Details section of Oliver, the Library catalogue.

Overdues

We still have some overdue books from Term 4, 2019 which we’re chasing. Parents and Carers will be sent an email soon if their children have any books that need to be returned. If these books are not returned on time, the books will become your property and a charge will be added for a replacement copy.

Year 7 Camp Collaroy

Year 7 headed to Camp Collaroy super excited for their three day CEP adventure. At Collaroy, students enjoyed a range of activities including hearing the gospel message of Jesus, Archery, Laser Tag, Beach Games, Fun in the Sun, Vertical Challenge and the Giant Swing. Students represented the College brilliantly and enjoyed achieving things they did not think they could achieve as well as hanging out with their friends and making new friends. Here’s what some Year 7 students had to say:

I absolutely loved camp especially it being my first one in high school. I think that going on camp so early in the year really helped me to become closer to people I usually wouldn’t hang around with. All the teachers were amazing and I had so much fun. Alyssa Premutico

I personally really enjoyed CEP. Not only did I get to hang out with my friends but all the activities were really enjoyable and made you realise how much we need to treasure these memories. The staff there were very sweet and treated everyone with a lot of respect. I really loved the activities where when you first looked at it you would go ‘Nope not doing that, I literally can’t do that’. But then once you got into it, you realised, ‘hey this isn’t so bad.’ My favourite activities would be Flying Fox, Vertical Challenge and the Giant Swing. Anyone going into Year 7 should really look forward to this camp!! Ooh and I also loved the cake that I got (it was my birthday). Rishelle George

In 2020 year 7 went to the Collaroy Centre in the Northern Beaches, we did many activities and had heaps of fun with our friends. My favourite part about camp was that we could hang out with our friends get to know some teachers and students we’d probably never talk a bit better. Another great thing about camp was competing to get Kevin. Kevin was our yearly mascot for the duration of camp. If you showed courage to do something that you were scared about or showed an act of kindness you would receive Kevin. From my perspective camp was pretty awesome. Thank you to the teachers who organised this event and to all the teachers who gave up their free time to come hang out with year 7. Charlotte Butler

Camp was a unique experience that got me to communicate with my peers and get to know them more. CEP provided excellent activities that made us show grit. One of those was the vertical challenge. In the vertical challenge I had to climb obstacles to get to the top and then abseil down to the ground. I was really scared because I am small and can’t reach some of the obstacles but with the encouragement from my peers and the camp mascot on my back I made it to the top and learnt that I could achieve anything if I believe I myself. Another thing I liked was that I got to engage with my teachers and have a chat with them. Overall it was an extraordinary experience. Aaron Vella

Year 8

Year 8 headed to Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre on the banks of the Colo River for their first day of CEP. There, they kayaked and canoed down a river that was fast flowing thanks to recent rain, and enjoyed a low ropes and obstacle course before enjoying afternoon tea at the river.

On Thursday, along with Year 9, students were separated into gendered groups with each group hearing separately from Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe. Our students engaged so well with these presentations, asking many questions and showing an excellent understanding of the issues facing young men and women and how they can be part of the solution moving forward.

On Friday, Year 8 moved through a series of workshops on Forensics, Team challenges and building and battling hydraulic robots.

Year 9

Year 9 had many physical challenges on CEP! On Wednesday, students had a number of choices of activities. Many wakeboarded at Cables, enjoyed a cooking class at Cucina Casarrecia, enjoyed Barefoot Bowls at Glenbrook and getting fit and playing on the inflatables at Fit 4 All. On Thursday, along with Year 8, students were separated into gendered groups with each group hearing separately from Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe. Friday was a picture perfect day of learning to surf and stand up paddleboard at Wollongong.

CEP for year 9 was an overall amazing experience. It was a great opportunity to relax with our friends for a few days . The range of activities for year 9, including surfing, paddle boarding, wake boarding, Italian cooking, survivor games and more, allowed us to experience and challenge ourselves and others in many ways. The talks were extremely inspirational and insightful. Overall, year 9 CEP was a great experience and the following year 9 classes should really look forward to it.

Year 10

Year 10 CEP is all about service. On Wednesday students had Devotions and then spent time preparing to teach lessons to Primary Classes. Students also spent time making St Patrick’s Day decorations for Newmarch Nursing Home.

In the afternoon, Year 10 students took primary classes, teaching gymnastics, art and craft, problem solving, sports of all varieties and Science lessons. Our Primary students absolutely loved having Year 10 teaching them and Year 10 did a wonderful job and learnt a little about the privileges and trials of being a teacher!

On the Thursday, Year 10 assisted at Bushcare in Werrington spending the day weeding and improving the site, at Foodbank NSW, playing music for clients of Flintwood Disability Service, spreading tonnes of mulch around the College and cooking over 80 meals for Mama Lana’s and William’s Place, two local charities providing food for the homeless.

On Friday, much to the disappointment of students and staff, The Awesome Race to the city was postponed. Students demonstrated compassion and resilience and coped with the postponement incredibly well. Instead, they engaged in Minute to Win it challenges, photo challenges, wide games and a think tank activity where they had to create a game of Monopoly which would bring families together rather than tearing them apart!

I really enjoyed CEP this year. Wednesday was a particular highlight for me, playing whole year games and teaching the primary school students. It was so much fun to watch and be apart of. Kate Shepherd

Playing music for the disabled and less fortunate people in our community really opened my eyes of how lucky we are and was an extremely rewarding and valuable experience I got to share with some of my mates. Jedd Kosman

Although Year 10 was supposed to do the Amazing Race in the city which got postponed, the teachers who were supervising Year 10 surely made up for the unfortunate postponement. Christian Michail

Year 11

Year 11 enjoyed a three day camp at Teen Ranch. Sessions were held on the HSC and how it works, study and time management tips, finding your identity in God and a visiting expert, Lisa Maltmann, spoke to the students about the importance of sleep. Students also enjoyed a campfire, a dress up night and activities such as canoeing, archery, horseriding and abseiling.

CEP at Teen Ranch gave us the unique opportunity to develop new skills such as teamwork and time management, as well as having a guest speaker come in and teach us about good sleeping habits that will greatly benefit us in the coming years. In addition to these new skills, the camp gave everyone the opportunity to become closer as a cohort, strengthening friendships as well as creating new ones. Personally, I enjoyed the highly contested beach volleyball, table tennis and cricket matches played during free time, despite how un-coordinated I proved to be.

Lachlan Nicholls

Overall, Year 11 camp was a great time spent away from schoolwork. The activities were fun, the sessions were helpful and informative and the food was great. A highlight for me on CEP would probably be doing the tower (rock climbing + abseiling).

The Vine - Issue No 4, 2020

Overall, Challenge, Explore, Prepare (CEP) is a huge week. But such an important one. During this week, students get a chance to live out the College values as they engage in a variety of challenging, structured and unstructured activities out of normal routine. Relationships are deepened, new relationships form, and students have the chance to try new things, take risks, show integrity, perseverance, compassion, humility and courage.

Many providers contacted me to say how much they enjoyed hosting our students and how we are welcome anytime because our students are respectful and courteous. It makes the staff of the College incredibly proud to be associated with our students at these times.

Mrs Fiona WrightIB Coordinator / Head of House Ridley

Year 12

Year 12 CEP was focussed on the future! On Wednesday, time was spent listening to a panel of successful adults with a range of background and experiences about how they arrived at their current work situation, the skills that were necessary and the important of being real and working hard. Students had opportunities to engage in small groups with our guests to ask questions relevant to them. Workshops in the afternoon included traveling on a budget, car and bike maintenance, managing your finances and tips for moving out of home.

On Thursday and Friday Year 12 enjoyed a night away at Mount Victoria. Students participated in camp activities, devotions, a formal dinner, listened to a panel of staff members talking about hard times in their own lives and what had helped them to walk through these times.

On Friday morning, the girls engaged in a self-defence class with Robert Williams, the Australian Head Sanda Coach for Kung Fu Wushu, while the boys spent time with James Grady exploring the hot topic of pornography

and the incredibly negative impact it has on hearts and minds.

Year 12 listed their highlights as:

• Self defense class• James Grady talk• Making songs together• Thursday night games• Talking to new people/

people I haven’t spoken to in a long time

• Good time to bond with the year group

• Dress up night• Question Time with the

lawyer• Life advice from teacher

HICES Debating

HICES Debating continued last week, with round 2 taking place at Macarthur Anglican School. In the junior division, our team, consisting of Layla Giampietro, Audrey Clark, Matthew Braga, Daniel Istafanos and Tia Linford were victorious against Oran Park.

Our middle division team, comprising Timothy Batcheldor, Toby Gange, Ava Kobus and Vanshika Rathore, defeated Georges River Grammar. Special mention to Toby Gange, for his indomitable display of witty logic demonstrating why video gaming should not be considered an Olympic sport.

Our open division team, comprising Daena Madon, Mark Nielsen and Ben Mallin enjoyed a hard-fought victory in a nail-biter between Macarthur and PAC. Whatever their personal views about the five-day school week, our tenacious trio left no stone unturned to argue against the case that workplaces across Australia should implement a four-day-week.

While the next round of the competition has been cancelled to comply with the latest health advice, we look forward to the fourth round in week two of next term. These debates will be conducted by distance using video-conferencing technology, another first for our teams.

Birthday Treats and Bubblers in the Primary SchoolPre K to Year 6

As you are aware the College is monitoring and following advice from relevant authorities. The health, safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our priority. With this in mind, and in line with current advice, the College is implementing some additional protocols.

We love celebrating student birthdays in the Primary School. If your child has their birthday and you wish to send treats to share with the class please ensure they are individually pre-packaged items such as chocolates or chips. Staff will be happy to supervise the distribution of the treats. Our normal guidelines as an allergy aware school apply.

Students will continue to receive their birthday cards and lollies from Mrs Grima.

Parents are also asked to make sure each child has their filled water bottle at the College every day. From Wednesday 18 March, the bubblers will not be in operation. The staff will supervise the refilling of water bottles as necessary.

Our Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 students can now use Seesaw for Schools to record their work in a journal simply by taking photos using iPads.

Seesaw is a platform for student engagement. Teachers can empower students to create, reflect, share, and collaborate. Students “show what they know” using photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs, and links. It is simple to get student work in one place and share with families. Teacher approval is required before anything is shared.

Seesaw is explained in the video you can access via the link https://youtube/pzlrtDR84KY. Parents can download the seesaw app available on Apple and Android devices or may log onto the website. All parents will receive an email detailing how to connect to your child’s journal.

Follow this link to see how you can connect to seesaw https://help.seesaw.me/hc/en-us/articles/206514655

We believe that this is a step forward in your child’s education and communication between parents and teachers. We are looking forward to our students sharing their learning experiences with you. Please contact me at the College if you have any questions.

Kids’ Lit Quiz Competition

On Friday 13 March a group of students from Years 5 and 6 attended the regional Kids’ Lit Quiz Competition at The Illawarra Grammar School. Our Year 5 team was Allanah Attia, Owen Kelly, Sam Poole and Thalia Rao. Students in our Year 6 team were Matthew Braga, Alex Fox, Chelsea Lobb and Rachel Mills.

Our teams competed against teams from a wide range of schools and were required to answer literary questions in ten separate categories, including Bears, Body Parts, Cities, Comic Titles, Fantasy and ‘Finally’.

We were very excited to take part in this event. We worked well as a team and achieved some excellent results. Chelsea even won a prize by answering a tricky bonus question!

Both of our teams chose Fantasy as our Double Points round, but we ended up doing really well in the Body Parts category- this was a bit of a surprise! Our second best category was ‘Finally’, which was about endings to books.

We had lots of fun and we did get some free food. We laughed together and talked about many things on the bus.

Owen Kelly 5W and Mrs Alison Sylvester

My favourite part was how if you won

you would get a book. But I would like it more if

everyone got a prize. We were the youngest team which made

it harder because we were versing high schoolers. I had

lots of fun though and that’s all that matters.

Justin Gonzalez Alcazar

Justin Gonzalez Alcazar is almost 8 years old and lives in Mexico with his mother and father. His father is employed but only sometimes. Justin’s job is to run errands and care for the animals. He likes to play group games, dance, play soccer and go to Bible class. He has no siblings.

Justin has been sponsored by the current Year 1 since they were in Pre K.

Justin is one the 2 million children in the Compassion Child Sponsorship program. Life can be very challenging for children living in poverty, especially when difficulties get in the way of daily life. Justin now has the chance to grow and learn just like people in developed countries. He also has the chance to hear the life-changing message of Jesus’ love.

Mrs Sue MuncePrimary Compassion Co-ordinator

Please praise God for:

• A wonderful CEP week for our Secondary students

• Those people who are going out of their way to help others who are vulnerable at this time

• Our staff working hard to be ready for off campus learning should the need arise.

Please pray for:

• Frontline health workers dealing with people all day, particularly those risking exposure to COVID-19.

• Families experiencing times of hardship or distress.

• The peace that Jesus gives to be evident in the words and actions of staff, students and parents at a time of heightened anxiety.

The Vine - Issue No 4, 2020

The College is continuing to make changes to our daily practice to follow recent advice regarding Covid-19. Many of these changes, like the cancelling of external excursions, whole school assemblies and more hygiene control have already been communicated.

Parents and carers are advised from Wednesday 18 March 2020 until further notice, the canteen will remain operational, but purchases must be online through FlexiSchools. No money will be exchanged at the canteen.

Breakfast orders must be placed by 7am, recess and the full lunch menu by 9am. There is also a “late order” function for lunch which can be placed until 11am, with a limited menu available.

This will minimise the number of students present at the canteen and eliminate cash handling for both students and staff. We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but are also confident that you would be supportive of our decision to take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our staff and students. We believe Flexischools provides a readily-available and effective means of online ordering. Flexischools provides both a website and an app for ordering.

I have attached our menu and a flyer from Flexischools for those who are not familiar with the system. If you have not already registered for Flexischools may I encourage you to open an account, If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me [email protected]
