~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last year our church leadership voted for our church
to become a part of the Vibrant Church Initiative
(VCI) which is facilitated by the Texas Annual
Conference Office of Congregational Excellence. We
realized that we, as a church in a growing community,
are poised for growth and want to make sure we we’re
ready to meet that growth as it comes. Our church
leadership has been at work in the initial stages of the VCI process and we
wanted to help answer any questions you might have about it.
Vibrant Church Initiative Q&A
What is VCI?
Vibrant Church Initiative is an ongoing coaching type of process (not a
program) that strengthens pastoral and laity effectiveness which is
customized to fit each congregation and mission field, and structured in
such a way that it can provide new ways year after year to strengthen your
church, regardless of the size. VCI includes a peer-mentoring component
for the pastor and leadership development opportunities for laity and
clergy that provide healthy growth strategies and renewed unity and
accountability.
Who does it involve?
Ultimately, the process will involve the entire Congregation in submitting
input and ideas, revisiting the mission and vision of the church and
dreaming about the future of the church. The church completes the "self
study" which gives the VCI consulting team information about the
history; key financial statistics, pastor Disc Profile and leadership style and
other statistics that help the team provide targeted recommendations.
MissionInsite demographics are also obtained to better understand the
mission field, and about a dozen "mystery guests" are recruited to visit the
church and provide feedback on their experience that is useful in
determining a congregation's strengths and weaknesses.
From the Pastor’s Desk continued
Why participate?
All churches can benefit from focusing and pursuing their “potential" and preferred future. The first dozen churches in
the Texas Annual Conference to start this unique process have been quick to report back that VCI has been nothing
but a positive force within their congregations. They consistently testify that the process provides a unifying and
clarifying pathway to growth, strength and greater impact in their communities.
What happens during the Consultation weekend?
One of the biggest catalysts of the VCI process is called the Consultation weekend. It involves a consultation team of
4-6 clergy and lay consultants coming to learn more about your church through a series of discussions, workshops and
interviews over a Friday/Saturday. The team interviews 8-10 leaders and staff members on Friday and conducts
workshops and focus groups to get more insight about the church's past, present and future. These meetings yield a
VCI Report that is customized to your church, and read to the congregation that Sunday. Members are given a printed
copy to review prior to a follow up meeting where the church will vote whether or not to adopt the "prescriptions"
that the consultation team has provided to help your church go from good to great.
What do the prescriptions typically relate to?
The VCI reports, for example, might suggest ways to strengthen the hospitality system, connect more relationally with
the community, clarify the church's discipleship pathway or Strategies for a particular ministry area.
What happens after the Consultation weekend?
Each church holds several town hall meetings to discuss the findings and ideas expressed in the report. The
congregation votes at a Charge/Church Conference about a month after receiving the report whether or not to accept
or decline the prescribed VCI action plan.
What happens if the report is accepted?
The church is provided access to a coach that works with the congregation and pastor for the next 18 months of
implementation to help the church grow healthier and more vibrant by focusing on 3-5 specific priorities. The
leadership team and others are invited to read and discuss books and resources that are targeted to their areas of focus.
It is our hope that you will join us in praying for this very important time for our church family. We are excited about
the new faces that God has been sending our way lately and we want to help reach people for Jesus Christ so we might
fulfill our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We believe VCI will help us
to do this. Our VCI Consultation Weekend is scheduled for this fall, September 30-Oct. 2. Mark your calendars now
to keep that weekend open. We want everyone available to be here for that very important weekend.
As your pastor I’m very excited to see what God is going to do in and through the VCI process for Bullard FUMC. I
believe God has great things in store for us. Join me as we pray together for this process and as we join God in what
he is doing in and thought Bullard FUMC.
Grace and Peace,
David Brasher
A Message from the Youth Director
Bring on the summer and the camps! It’s exciting to get to this time of the year for our youth. School is
concluding and summer activities will begin. I know our youth are excited to participate in our upcoming church
camps. From Lakeview, which the kids get to spend close to a week having fun and reaffirming their faith, to
UM Army and Big House where the youth get to participate in mission activities bettering communities and the
lives of others. It’s a great time to be part of our youth program. The first camp in June is Lakeview from June
20-24, which is in Palestine, TX. This camp is for youth kids going into 5th grade up to senior high. Registration
is complete. If there’s any questions, please contact Chad King.
The next camp is UM Army for our high school teens from 9th-12th grade. We will be doing mission work in
Rayville, La this year from July 10-16. Finally, we have our Big House mission camp for grades 6-9, which is
going to be located in Atlanta, TX from July 21-24. Signups for both mission camps are complete and our rosters
are set. Just so many wonderful opportunities for our kids to continue to grow in Christ and also see first-hand
just how powerful it can be to serve others in His name. I hope everyone joins with me on this excitement and
puts our kids and youth up in prayer that they have a wonderful and life changing time on each of the camps they
may attend.
Blessings.
Chad C. King
United Methodist Women
Can you believe that since we met in early May that we have already celebrated Memorial Day? Can you also
believe that the first day of Summer will be June 20, 2016? That half of this year is flying by? I'm never up with
the times anymore, and it astounds me when I realize where we are on the calendar.
Perhaps this is age mentality or something!!! The other day, I was thinking about my sister, Helen who lives in
Denton. This lovely lady looks forward to each morning after breakfast. She gets dressed with a little help; gets
in her wheelchair; and rides the elevator down from her 4th floor apartment to the first floor. Her goal for the
day is to "PRACTICE" the piano for herself and anyone else who wants to listen. She keeps arthritis in her hands
at bay by using them doing something she loves. Recently, she even learned a new piece to play. Oh! Did I
mention she is 92 years old?
I also want you to know this wonderful Christian lady played for her church in Irving, Texas and loved belonging
to The United Methodist Women. These ladies get on the church Van and visit her in Denton whenever they
can.
Friendships are made for life in our Church Family and I hope others will join us in the Fall when we meet once
again.
Love and hugs,
Kathleen VP
United Methodist Men
Per the Worship Committee, the Altar Flower policy for the church is as follows:
Set price for altar flowers/per Sunday is $35.00 (there will be no special requests for kinds of flowers). If a
second person signs up for a Sunday, then one of two things can happen:
1. You can split the cost of $35.00 (for the two arrangements), if first person is agreeable.
2. If you want a complete complement of flowers which can be placed on the organ or piano (not the altar),
you’ll need to make your own arrangements with your florist, including payment.
When signing up for flowers:
1. Choose a date.
2. Print clearly the name of person/persons in “Memory or Honor of”
3. Print clearly the name of person/persons giving the flowers.
Please note that you can take the altar flowers home; the green plastic containers that the flowers are in need to
stay at the church. If you have any questions/concerns, contact the church office (903) 894-6762.
The United Methodist Men held the Spring Garage Sale on May 6th and 7th. The sale generated approximately
$1,500 toward scholarships and other ministry efforts. We appreciate the donations and participation in the sale.
The men continue to meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
All the men of the church are invited to join us for a meal, fellowship and ministry.
Children’s Sunday School
Please bring your friends and join us every Sunday morning for
adventures into the Word of God! Sunday school teachers are still needed
for substitute teaching. Please also consider a one month commitment
to teaching one of our classes! The kids will benefit from learning
from you and you will be blessed by them as well!
VBS is almost here! It’s time to sign up and please invite your friends and neighbors! Please pray for a safe and fun
event for the kids of our church and community. We still need a few more adult volunteers. If you are able to help
please let me know or sign up at the Children’s Ministry board.
In the month of May we completed Kids in Mission for our spring session. We learned about praying and The
Lord’s Prayer. We also put together our granola bars mission project which are being given out at the Mission
House. We also celebrated the beginning of summer with a pool party at the Geesings!
I’m blessed to work alongside you in ministry in the church and the city. Please join me in prayer for doors to be
opened to share the love of Christ.
PLEASE NOTE:
Bullard Mission House Food Pantry will be open on Wednesday, June 15
and Tuesday, June 28 from 9 am until 12 pm.
Hope you are enjoying the wonderful sunshine we are having! Summer is around the corner and the gardens
are producing wonderful choices of foods and flowers! The bees and butterflies are out working their magic on
the plants! Kids are out of school and the days are longer, what a great time to Praise the Lord!!
As you have noticed, 1/2 of the Mission House has been moved and did not get harmed in the storm as some
people thought. The other half should be moved by the end of the month. Pray for a less 'exciting' move this
time for the ones that are moving it!
We held our first month of Food Pantry in its new location and it was very successful! More people will be
attending when the new building is 'remembered'. Change is not always easy for some of us, you know! Thank
you for the hard work that the Food Pantry volunteers are doing!
Thank you, volunteers, at the Mission Clinic! What an amazing job they do, too! There are a lot of clients that
depend on the doctors, nurses, and staff. If you would be interested in helping this Summer so that they can
have some time off, just contact Hazel Mason or Sharon Starwalt (numbers below) or drop by the Mission Clinic
and let them know that you are interested in helping.
Announcing a construction start date for new building is in the works after the other part of the Mission House
building has been moved. Opportunities are abounding to be part of the new Mission House and Mission
Clinic. Because we are a 'new building', the City has passed an ordinance that states we have to have a paved
parking lot, that we were not expecting. So, if you would like to help with the mandatory parking lot for the new
building, feel free to call Hazel Mason (903-521-5711) or Sharon Starwalt (317-919-9928) at the Mission Clinic or
just drop by. And, thanks, for considering us! God just loves a cheerful giver and has blessings running over, you
know!
Watch for our new Website around June 6th. We are excited about it!
The Post Office had their Food Drive and we are again blessed that they chose us for their donation of food from
this wonderful organization! It goes for a great cause in the City of Bullard! Thank you so much for helping out!
Thoughts from a Layman
Assorted Thoughts That I Have Collected
Everybody’s got to serve somebody.
The current structure ain’t working.
John Wesley learned Spanish and had Spanish materials.
Mexicans are the largest minority group in the U.S.
Don't let your worries get the best of you; Moses started out as a basket case.
Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.
Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors.
It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.
When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.
People want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.
Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.
If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.
Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.
Peace starts with a smile.
Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.
Coincidence is when God remains anonymous.
Forbidden fruits create many jams.
God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
God loves everyone, but probably prefers 'fruits of the spirit' over 'religious nuts!'
God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.
He who angers you, controls you!
If God is your Co-pilot - swap seats!
The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.
You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia!
Just be you. Everyone Else Is Taken!
We make a Living by what we get, we make a Life by what we give.
'Good friends are like stars....You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.
When you're in love, it shows.
We should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.
Money doesn't buy class.
Under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
Ignoring the facts does not change them.
When you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
The easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
Everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
No one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
Life is tough, but I'm tougher.
Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
Thoughts from a Layman continued
When you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I wish I could have told my Mom that I loved her one more time before she passed away.
One should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.
The less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.
To go against one’s conscience is neither safe nor right.
Prayer may not change things for you, but it for sure changes you for things.
Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. -- Martin Luther
