Inspirational MotivationWired for Health: 6-Week Program to Kick You Into Gear

BY DR. DIONNE KRESS

Year after year, many of us make resolutions to start exercising, to eat well, lose weight, and give up all of our bad habits. If we only made small changes and started to follow some of the basic rules of health (and stuck to them) we would experience some signifi cant benefi ts. According to a Harvard Nurses’ Health Study making simple changes results in 80% reduction in heart disease risk, 90% decrease in diabetes risk, and 50% cut in cancer risk. However, most of us fail to keep our promises to ourselves. For many, weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a never-ending battle. Too often weight loss and exercise is a temporary event followed by a steady regaining of weight and a return to the couch. Success needs to incorporate a multi-faceted approach if weight loss and exercise habits are to remain a permanent lifestyle.

Research has shown that when an individual engages with a group for support and receives coaching they signifi cantly increase their level of success. The New England Journal of Medicine (February 26, 2009) conducted a 2 year research study and found that people who participated in group counseling/coaching were more successful with weight loss and felt a greater sense of health and well-being. These facts indicate the signifi cance of not going it alone. When you surround yourself with positive support and encouragement your signifi cantly improve your odds of success. Make 2011 your year to achieve your health and wellness goals! Starting January 19th, a six-week group-coaching program called Wired for Health will begin to help you keep the health and wellness promises you made to yourself. Wired for Health is a group coaching experience for those who want to live a healthy balanced life. Many of us have struggled to achieve our optimal health; we have been challenged by excessive weight, lack of exercise, bad eating habits and an overall feeling of bad health. We have also struggled to keep our mind, body, emotions, and spirit in balance. Achieving a state of optimal health and wellbeing allows us to engage in a preventative lifestyle free of challenges. This group coaching experience will provide the support network, tools, and knowledge you need to start living the healthy life you desire. The Wired for Health Group Coaching experience will

guide you along your personal journey, achieving a state of optimal health and wellness. The journey starts by creating a balance from within. Finding the balance between the mind, body, emotions, and spirit and taking care of the whole person. In the coaching group, you will create realistic goals and establish a plan for success that will help you stay on track. If you do not know where you want to go then you will never know when you have arrived. Goals and a well-defi ned plan are key to a successful outcome. Cultural myths suggest that health and weight challenges are the result of external matters. External approaches to improved health and weight loss will fail because they serve only as a mask to the true nature of an unhealthy lifestyle and weight gain. The cure has to come from within and the cause of the challenges has to be discovered from the inside out. Success comes from within, not from without. Throughout the process of the coaching group experience, you will be asked to lean on each other for support and encouragement. You will be encouraged to fi nd a buddy with whom you will exercise and call upon if you feel you need to. Each week you will be asked to engage in one new activity that leads to a healthier lifestyle. By the end the experience, you will have a sense of improved health and wellness and will have created a plan for continued success. 2011 is your year to make a promise of health and wellness! Taking on the WorldKeeping Your Cool During the Hectic Holiday Festivities

BY RACHEL ANZALONE

One of the best things about the holiday season is visiting family: catching up, remembering old times, seeing how the kids have grown. This year, for me, there are three main events – two dinners and a brunch. There have been 32 phone calls this week (I’ve been counting), discussions of who’s sleeping where and why. Gift consultations from the mall, breakfast consultations from the grocery store – do you drink soy, almond or cows milk these days? It’s intense. And I’m not even home yet. This is what I envision for the coming week: Day one: Four hours to get out of the house with my husband and two teenagers. Three hours in the car, if the weather’s good. How many bathroom stops? Big, sloppy welcome, compliments of two parents, a sister, a brother-in-law, two dogs and a cat.

Unload. Off to dinner with fi ve cousins, their spouses and eight kids. (Or nine? It’s hard to keep track.) Wine. Talking. Who’s done what since we last saw each other weeks or months or a year ago? More wine. More talking. Day two: Escape to ski for the day – yay! Coordinate rentals for two teenagers, carry equipment, lessons, crock-pot lunch and all the amenities. On to dinner at dad’s. Lasagna. Eat too much. Drink too much. Then the inquisition. Attempt to explain, after too many glasses of wine why & how I think I can live without a “regular job.” Looks of confusion. Change the subject. Stay up too late laughing riotously for hours. Day three: Brunch at moms with fi ve step-siblings, a step-mother once removed (Is that a real thing?) and fi ve more kids. Try to help mom while she control-freaks in the kitchen. Play jungle gym for three giggling little girls. Eat too much. Back in the car for three hours, multiple bathroom stops. Home. Did I mention this is all before Christmas Eve? If you’re week sounds anything like mine you need some help to keep your sanity. Here are some tips: 1. Remember who you are. It seems that no matter how far we’ve come or what we’ve accomplished, when we come home for the holidays we regress to our teenage years and so do our parents. It’s a comfortable pattern and

it’s how we know how to be around each other. Recognize this pattern and notice when you’re falling into old habits of behavior. Make a choice to let things slide. 2. Set Boundaries for yourself and others. Have a kind response prepared for that moment went Auntie Mae goes to far. Start with something like, “I appreciate your concern…” Remember that as much as they make you crazy you probably do some things that irritate them as well. Reign in your own inner-critic and focus on the good stuff. 3. Indulge without guilt. We all indulge over the holidays. The number one rule to over-indulgence is “No guilt allowed!” Indulgence is a splurge, guilt makes it a crime. Give yourself a break and enjoy. 4. Take care of you. Exercise releases endorphins, which relax you and give you a natural high. Our normal exercise routine often goes out the window during the holidays. You may not be able to hit the gym for an hour, but taking a 15-minute walk from time to time should do the trick. 5. Be grateful. When your mother-in-law is about to push you over the edge, walk away, take a moment to yourself, even if it’s in the bathroom, and remember all the things you’re grateful for this year. The insanity will all suddenly seem much more tolerable. For more info. visit: www.rachelanzalone.com.

mentions that all the closets are cedar. There is a second full bath on this fl oor as well. Down the hallway are four bedrooms on this fl oor, making a total of fi ve. The two bedrooms at the end of the hall way each feature their own fi replace. I peek into one of the bedrooms; the fi replace and monastery windows seem almost out of another time. Outside there is two feet of snow on the ground, so it a bit diffi cult to tour the backyard.

The perennial gardened back yard leads to a stone wall that keeps the lake at bay. On the side is a newly rebuilt, lighted dock that comes with the property. Around the front is a water garden with two waterfalls and two small ponds. The windows in the living room look out to them. In the front is a detached three-car garage with a second story. Built in 1926 the house has had an interesting history and reputation. One of the owners was a rather colorful character who dubbed the home “Taylor’s Playhouse”. Apparently, some of the games played in the house were of a more adult nature, and local legend has it

that it was once something of a bordello. No one is sure if it is really true, but Pam entertained me with a story she heard from the previous owner; too ribald to recount here. True or not, nothing can detract from this homes beauty. Right on Cuba Lake, close to ski country, big enough to house a passel of family and guests, and elegant enough to charm even the most jaded city dweller, this house is indeed the stuff of legend. For more information on this waterfront property on 1.2 acre parcel of land located at 278 West Shore, Cuba, NY contact Tina Dillon at ERA Vacation Realty; 716-474-5646.

COMEDY SHOWCASE: JANUARY 22, 2011, 11 AM ~ BARTLETT C.C., OLEAN, NY

There is a wintertime ban on parking between the hours of 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. from December through March on Washington Street (Jefferson Street to Mill Street), and on Monroe Street (Elizabeth Street to Martha Street). Please do not park near inter-sections, as the sidewalk plow needs access to the sidewalks throughout the Vil-lage. This period of restricted hours is enforced consistently throughout the winter months regardless of the amount of snowfall to allow the DPW to clear the streets of snow within the business district. Anyone wishing to plow private or commercial driveways in the Village must obtain a permit at no charge by completing an applica-tion available from the Village Clerk, Village Constable or DPW.

Whatever Floats Your BoatTips to Traveling with Kids

BY FELICIA Z. LIVINGSTON

Merry Christmas and welcome to Ellicottville! No worries about having a white Christmas this year—there’s plenty of snow to go around to get us in the spirit, slide on, throw at each other, and give us an excuse to buy beautiful things to keep us warm and looking fashionable. As long as there are holidays, vacations, families, and kids, eventually there will be travel with our precious little ones. A recent 9 hour fl ight presented an opportunity to experience what we all dread—a mother and toddler seated next to me on a full fl ight. I have traveled long distances with our children and I understand both sides of the situation, but this child did everything imaginable EXCEPT sit while her mother apparently got her lists of “do’s and don’ts of traveling” mixed up. No toys, books, snacks, or manners were provided and I’d be happy to send this column to her if only she spoke English. Please don’t get me wrong—traveling with children is a fact of life, but with a bit of planning, kids, parents, and fellow travelers can reach their destination in a much happier place—so to speak—and worth every ounce of effort. Smiles beat scowls every time. Here are some tips in random order to make everyone’s life better when toting your toddlers and young children—all age dependent, of course. These tips are great for getting to a cruise

when the kids will be totally entertained while onboard, but if your travels entail more driving or fl ying than cruising, here they are:• Don’t expect kids to eat airline food. Bring plenty of snacks to dole out—pretzels, raisins, nuts, cheerios, and an occasional sweet treat. Never give them out too fast--maybe every half hour or so. If you can pre-wrap them in aluminum foil so they have something to unwrap, all the better. If the treats are chewy, they take longer to eat. Be sure to bring a bag for wrappers and garbage. Mix up the treats and they can also be a reward to for great behavior. • While fl ying, children often suddenly wake up and start to cry as soon as the plane begins to descend. This is the time to bring out the juice boxes, gum, or anything to get kids to swallow. This will avoid the extremely painful earache caused by the change in air pressure. Having experienced this myself for years, I totally sympathize with the children and even more their parents who sometimes are unaware of what is causing their screaming. They are in pain and it is not fun for anyone. For the relief of everyone within “earshot” – I carry lollipops to offer them to the parents to give to their child. Swallowing frequently allows the ears to pop and the earaches can be avoided. • Older children can carry their own backpack fi lled with their snacks and treats—this keeps their hands free to hold onto yours. In your carry-on bag, bring a change of clothes for each of you all in separate Ziploc bags to fi nd easily in case of messes, spills, smears, or accidents. In addition, your carry-on should carry a treasure trove of goodies—not just snacks, but new, fun, age- appropriate, and interesting toys. A visit to the Dollar Store can provide a trip’s worth of items that can be unwrapped over the course of the journey or if driving, every 50 miles or so. Our family’s #1

favorite has been the travel size Magna Doodle with attached “pen”. We spent countless hours drawing, learning letters; numbers, words, and you don’t run out of paper. Crayons and coloring books are always an option---- until you leave them in the back window ledge of your car on a hot summer day (like we did). • Books are an absolute—maybe one favorite, but new ones will be more interesting--- books on tape are great, too. Picture books that you can teach colors, numbers, shapes, and objects provide hours of contented kids. • Be sure to pack samples of over the counter medicines and don’t forget prescriptions of necessary. Ear infections crop up at the most inconvenient times, so maybe a preventive supply of antibiotics to have on hand may save a scramble to fi nd a doctor. • Buy post cards from each stop you make—write events and memories on the back and save them for your own scrapbook or mail them to yourself! Postcards make a wonderful collection and a fantastic school project that can be adapted and added to year after year. • Games are great—travel versions of our favorites are available and lots of them are magnetized to prevent lost parts. Don’t forget the old standbys—license plate hunt, travel bingo, and my personal favorite—waving at people in other cars. See how many wave back and truck drivers who honk their air horns. • Turn your children into map-lovers. Look for funny names of towns, count the exits, calculate travel time, look for landmarks, and learn route numbers. So, enjoy our lovely town this Christmas and may your travels be safe and happy!
