Perhapsthe zaniest of the offerings will beNuncrackers, a holiday spin-off ofthe musical Nunsense. RockingHorse Productions has teamed upwith the Lancaster Opera House andthe Fredonia Opera House to produceNuncrackers.

Yep, those nutty singing nuns areback and in this production the LittleSisters of Hoboken have constructeda Cable Access studio in the conventbasement and are launching theirvery first Christmas TV special. AsDoug Kern, director of the musicaltells me, Its about the high jinx andhilarity that ensues while these nunstry to put on The Nutcracker withthe students of the Mt. St. HelensSchool. Things go wrong from thestart: Sister Mary Leo, the residentballerina, has a backstage accidentand throws a monkey wrench into theproduction. But the sisters soldieron through musical numbers thatrange from the silly to the absurd, including The Twelve Days Priorto Christmas, Santa Aint Comin

to Our House, Here We Come aWaffle-ing and We Three Kings ofOrient R Us. The musical promisesto be a show filled with hilariousgags, snap-crackle quips, and spoofsof everybodys favorite carols.

Rick Davis of the Fredonia OperaHouse says, We encourage folks to

come on out and just enjoy a nicenight of comedy and relaxation. Theactors involved in the show are fromthe western New York area. DougKern points out, A lot of them havedone regional, community, and somehave done professional theater.Nuncrackers will be lighting up the

This year, as they have for thepast 30 years, the Stateline DraftHorsemans Club will give sleighrides through the winter groundsof the Chautauqua Institution. Thehorse drawn bobsleds (wagons,if the weather doesnt cooperate)begin at the bookstore and carryriders on a 45-minute ride throughthe historic grounds. Passing thelake is the coldest part of the drive, according to Ed Trisket, who shouldknow since he is one of the drivers.

The drivers offer their passengersa guided tour, one that varies by thedriver Trisket said.

The only thing we ask is thatanything said in the bobsled staysinside the fence, he said, just incase not all the facts match up.

On beautiful winter afternoons, the teams of draft horses willsometimes give rides to up to 300passengers. Even an afternoon thatisnt so conducive to sleigh ridingwont stop the teams.

Unless theres a weather advisory, well be there. Weve been out therewhen its 10 or 15 below zero,Trisket said.

The passengers come from as faras Cleveland and Pittsburgh, andof course, from the local areas. Forsome, its their first time arounddraft horses. Others come backfrom years before, or even just daysbefore.

They want to know if its thesame horses as last time, Trisket

said, They remember their names, sometimes they bring apples to feedthem.

He said that the club membersenjoy introducing people to drafthorses and bobsleds. Many of theclub members became involved withhorses after seeing them at paradesand fairs, although they havent yetrecruited any new members fromamong the sled passengers.

One year, there was an older lady

that joined the rides every weekend,Trisket said.

She said she loved the memoriesit brought back of her grandparents,he said. The woman took the sleighride so many times that eventuallythe drivers gave her a free pass.

And then there are the rides thatcarry more significance than just apleasant afternoons outing.

The horse drawn bobsleds (wagons, if the weather doesnt cooperate)begin at the bookstore and carry riders on a 45-minute ride throughthe historic grounds. The rides are every Saturday and Sunday, beginning the first week after Christmas and running through the firstweekend of February. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children andcan be purchased at the Chautauqua Institution bookstore.
