AMAZING MINSTERWORTH!

FETE SATURDAY JUNE 16TH 2018

What a great time we all had!

Admittedly it rained a bit, but not enough to dampen spirits, and certainly not enough to spoil our enjoyment. It was just great seeing everyone chatting, watching and joining in with the fun of the stalls. Milking the cow was again a great attraction, with considerable rivalry between contestants. You could play skittles, chicken in the basket, hook a duck or take part in Forest School. There was tombola, a book stall, and the raffle, the children enjoyed the bouncy castle, and of course there was the dog show.

As with most Minsterworth events, there was plenty to eat, with cream teas, a cake stall, Indian samosas and a BBQ serving burgers and hot dogs. For those of a more inquisitive nature, Andy Ruck was demonstrating his skycam drone (unfortunately too wet and windy for it to fly safely) and Liz Stephens and colleagues were demonstrating equipment used for riding for the disabled.

As expected there was plenty of interest in the Affordable House open to view, our first visitors of the afternoon being a small delegation from Staverton PC who are thinking of doing a similar project.

We are extremely grateful to all the people and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, the Golden Ticket, and the tombola, and to Liz Stephens and the Wood Veterinary Group at Quedgeley who donated the rosettes and prizes for the dog show.

The raffle winners were:

Raffle 1. Sunday lunch for 6 at Hatherley Manor – C Yates 2. Vaccination voucher from Wood Veterinary Group – M Bassett 3. Silver Swan beef hamper – M Cotteneu 4. Chevenage House (Poldark!) entry tickets – S Smith 5. Harts free range bronze turkey – S Babbage 6. Batsford arboretum entry tickets – J Lewis 7. Hartpury College family rugby tickets – G Middleton

Sponsors for tombola prizes included Over Farm Shop, Biz stationary, Ashley Paul hairdressing, Sam Richards Christmas trees, Prinknash Bird Park, Minsterworth butchers and George vet Group, and of course MANY residents of Minsterworth.

Most of all we were delighted to see so many people present. A BIG THANKS must go to all the Minsterworth helpers, to those who provided cakes, books for the book stall, tombola prizes and to those who simply came along to support the event. We couldn’t have managed without any of you. And of course it was good to raise over £3000 to help us renovate the Village Hall kitchen – well done one and all!

“To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.” - Aldo Leopold

Minsterworth Village Play Area At present the Parish Council are looking into obtaining a license to allow the Parish to retain the village Play Area – it’s on the lower road just opposite the lane to Orchard End, if you have not been there before. This will transfer the responsibility of the Play Area to the Parish.

Although we have had verbal permission to use the area, those using it do so at their own risk.

At the moment we need some help to keep it looking cared for and to do brief periodic safety checks, to ensure nothing is broken.

Can you volunteer to help out with grass cutting & hedge trimming until it gets sorted?

There is a small group of residents already working on the grounds but many hands make light work! Please contact Sharon Ingham via email [email protected]

There is a vacancy on the Village Hall Management Committee.

Please apply to The Chairman Cathy Thomas on 07546 497203

The Doomsday book

The Exon Domesday is the survey of farms and small holdings

that was carried out to make up the Domesday book.

It gives a fascinating insight into farming life in 1086, the date

of the survey. There is just one copy of the Exon Domesday

remaining, stored in Exeter Cathedral, and this has recently

been extensively studied.

We are delighted that Chris Lewis from London University has

agreed to repeat the talk that he gave at Gloucester Cathedral

in February of this year. There were people queuing at the

door, unable to get in, at that event, so Minsterworth is

honoured to have its very own presentation. It was good in

February, and I’m looking forward to listening again!

Five Busy Honey Bees

Five busy honey bees were resting in the sun. The first one said, “Let us have some fun.” The second one said, “Where shall it be?” The third one said, ”In the honey tree” The fourth one said, “Let’s make some honey sweet.” The fifth one said, “With pollen on our feet.” The five little busy bees sang their buzzing tune, As they worked in the beehive all that afternoon. Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!

Notes from Parish Council Meeting 11th June 2018

Planning 18/00387/FUL The Firs Main Road. A site meeting is being arranged. The footprint remains the same. No objection. 18/00560/APP Part Parcel 3947 Main Road. No objection. TBC are developing a plan for Minsterworth’s future housing. The Parish Council was given 3 plans, 1 small, 1 med, 1 large. They opted for the small one. Not all permission will be granted where developments are shown on the maps. Want to avoid a line of houses each side of the A48. Prefer short blocks of 2 deep houses. Suggest replicate what’s on Church Lane side of A48. Need to minimise number of exits on to the A48. Not allowed to build on ancient orchard land (there’s lots!) even if within boundaries. Opportunity to review after 5 yrs.

Broadband Gigaclear are currently choosing where to take the fibreoptic cable across the river. It is already laid on the Longney side.

County Cllr. Awford wants to replace 3 bins at the roadside with larger ones, they are always full.

VH rep. - tenders have gone to 5 local builders & a grant applied for. A solicitor is to be appointed to oversee the application to take over the play area.

A GDPR policy has been agreed.

The next meeting is the on 9th July in Minsterworth Village Hall a 7.30pm

This report doesn't necessarily reflect the minuted discussions and decisions of the Parish Council; anyone wanting further information, or to inspect the agreed minutes, should consult the Clerk Fiona Wallbank on 01452 849178.
