THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF HOLLYWOOD DECEMBER 2017 Hello everyone, We are quickly approaching the end of 2017, and the holiday season is upon us. What a year it has been here at Hollywood and for Belmont Village. At our community, we have welcomed and said farewell to some wonderful friends, we celebrated the completion of our beautiful ground floor renovations, and we opened a second memory neighborhood. As a company, we came together during the unprecedented natural disasters that directly impacted sister communities in Houston during Harvey, in Mexico City during the recent earthquake, and in Northern California during the devastating wildfires that destroyed homes and livelihoods in Sonoma County. In each of the above disasters, all Belmont Village communities and residents remained safe. This was, in part, due to the actions of our dedicated staff who confidently implemented the disaster plan in each community. After securing our own properties and our residents, the Belmont Village family quickly joined local efforts to assist other assisted living communities affected by the disasters. This was especially the case in Northern California, where wildfires devastated senior communities in the Santa Rosa and Sonoma County area. At least two large assisted living communities, one of which was a dedicated memory care community, burned to the ground. The staff and residents in those communities were evacuated in the middle of the night with only the clothes they were wearing. Our newly opened Belmont Village Albany community was able to take in over 55 memory care residents from the two buildings in Santa Rosa. The entire Belmont Village West Coast regional support team and several Corporate Operations team members flew to Albany so that they could help to care for those residents. They had to buy beds, supplies and arrange for medications for many of the residents. And, the phones at Albany have continued to ring with calls from seniors and their families who were displaced and in need of immediate placement. Continued on page 3 ... ....Continued from page oneA number of managers from

the Los Angeles Belmont Villagecommunities spent time at theAlbany community, includingEric Thacker who helped theAlbany team recruit and hirenew staff to help assist theinfusion of new and traumatizedresidents. In addition toproviding support to ourcommunity in Albany, we alsohad one of our managers inBelmont Village Mexico Citywhen the earthquake occurred.Nadia Cantuna from our salesoffice was working in Mexico tohelp train their new sales teamwhen the earthquake hit. And,true to her nature, Nadia jumpedin to help support the BelmontVillage staff. It is at momentslike these that I am reminded ofthe sincere goodness that existsin people, and I feel enormouspride to say that I work forBelmont Village.

By the time we print thisnewsletter, we will have enjoyedThanksgiving, and we will beheading into the holiday season.Somehow with all that I sharedabove, celebrating all that isgood this year feels even moreimportant than usual. I really feeltruly thankful to have workedalongside the dedicated staffhere at Hollywood this year, andto have had the privilege ofserving our residents andfamilies.

CONGRATS ANDGREAT JOB!! WERAISED $4926 FORWALK TO ENDALZHEIMER’S~THANK YOU TOALL!!!

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

Seasons greeting to all ourNeighborhood and Circlefamilies,

November was no exception,we started with a verysuccessful Alzheimer’s walk inwhich 11 of our residentsparticipated. The weather wasgreat and everyone had afabulous time. I would like toextend a huge thank you to thestaff that made this all possible. Iinvite you to see some of thepictures of this event in ourneighborhoods. We continuedthe month by discussing theNative Americans and thePilgrims. These discussionsincluded spiritual beliefs, workethics, travel, fables and muchmore. Our residents also got toenjoy the sights and sounds ofOlvera Street, Gladstone’s and

the Nethercutt Museum. As ifthis was not enough, we alsobrought back our sorely missedscenic drives and walking club.

As we enter into this Holidayseason, be it Christmas,Chanukah, or Kwanzaa, I hopeyou can all take some time to sitback, and enjoy the traditionsthat your families have created.Remember that this time of theyear can also be the loneliest forour residents as they think backon holidays past and the futurein store. As Terri Marshall oncewrote, “The holiday season isthe perfect time to reflect onour blessings and seek out waysto make life better for thosearound us.”

A Joyous Holiday to Youand Yours,

Anasheh Satoorian, Director of ResidentCare Services

It’s that time of the year again! The holidays are here, and

unfortunately so is flu season.Influenza season beginssometime in the late fall, usuallypeaks over the winter, andbegins to wane in the spring. The influenza virus is acontagious respiratory illnessthat can infect the throat, nose, and possibly the lungs. As ourimmune defenses decline withage, those over 65 and older areat a greater risk forcomplications including sinusand ear infections, bacterialpneumonia, and worsening ofchronic conditions such asasthma, diabetes, or congestiveheart failure.

The flu is spread mainly bydroplets, for instance when aperson sneezes, coughs, or talks. The flu can also be spread whena person touches a surface orobject that has the flu viruses, then touches their own nose ormouth. In fact, you could passthe flu to someone before youare even aware you are sick. However, people are typically

most contagious in the first 3-4days after becoming ill. Signsand symptoms of the flu includefever, sore throat, cough, stuffyor runny nose, headache, bodyor muscle ache, and fatigue.

The best way to prevent theflu is to get vaccinated. Fluvaccines are updated eachseason to keep up with the virusas it changes to ensure the bestprotection against influenza. TheCDC also recommends takingpreventive actions, includingstaying away from people whoare sick, frequent hand washing, and covering coughs andsneezes. Take theserecommended steps to have ahappy and healthy holidayseason!
