The VILLAGE CRIER Volume 65, No.4 April, 2011 Published by the Associates of Loch Raven Village, Inc., Since 1947 SOME BUNNY’S COMIN’ to LRV! – See Events, page 10 GOOD NEWS from Loch Raven Academy The faculty and staff of Loch Raven Acad- emy have worked hard to provide reading and mathematics programs for students. However, the staff felt that even more incentives and some extra teaching tools were needed to support mathematics, so the school applied to Donor’s Choose, a national organization that makes the pub- lic aware of the needs of schools through written requests. In its request on DonorsChoose.org, Loch Raven Academy requested a laptop and printer, to be dedicated to small group math instruction alone, plus math books and flash cards as incentives, to help stu- dents hone their math skills. With only 18 days left to go and more than $800 still outstanding, the school was wor- ried that it would not make its goal. An email was sent out to all teachers in the school, making them aware that with a small donation from each, Loch Raven Academy could possibly reach its project goal. One teacher passed the information to a member of Loch Raven Village, who then took the initiative to pass the school’s need throughout the entire community. Within a week, the residents of Loch Raven Village, along with the Associ- ates of Loch Raven Village, had paid the balance of the project, and Loch Raven Academy reached its goal. The teachers and staff of Loch Raven Academy know that without their won-derful Loch Raven Village neighbors, this would never have been possible. everyone at the school wishes to publically and sin-cerely thank every donor for their gener-ous gifts to support the school and its stu-dents. each donor can rest assured that their thoughtful gifts are not only primar-ily funding mathematics incentives, but also teaching tools, which will make math instruction more fun and effective for all students.

wood Road. i support calming measures and hope the study shows there is suf-ficient traffic to warrant improvements along these streets.

i wanted to make you aware of another issue i am attempting to address. Sev-eral residents have complained about the feral cat population in Loch Raven Village. i have assembled a group to look at animal welfare issues, and this group includes residents from LRV.

Looking ahead, i will be working with community leaders to restart the Loch Raven community council and to determine the future of the Loch Raven library. i am very happy that a Friends of the Loch Raven Library organization has been started to improve the appear-ance and operations of this branch. i will also be working hard to preserve the Loch Raven community within one district as the county council redraws the lines for the seven county council districts.

Finally, I urge you to contact me if you want to be put on our email list for periodic updates. Simply send us an email at council5@baltimorecoun-tymdgov. Thank you again for the honor of representing Loch Raven Village on the Baltimore county council.

Calvert HallIt’s a golden year to be a Cardinal! Fifty years ago, calvert Hall relocated from its cramped site on cathedral and mulberry Streets in Baltimore to its “spacious” campus in Towson. As part of our “50 years in Towson” celebration, calvert Hall hosted two night football games and three soccer games on a new-ly installed synthetic turf field. While the games used rented lights that are both expensive to operate and energy inefficient, the school intends to have permanent lights on the Russo Stadium by the start of the Fall 2011 athletic season. Lights will also be installed at the crispino baseball stadium. Both will have a highly efficient low-glare lighting system that reflects light onto the play-ing surface without intruding upon the surrounding neighborhood.

during the last 50 years, Calvert Hall has been very fortunate to have Loch Raven Village as hospitable neighbors and looks forward to maintaining an ami-able relationship in the years ahead.

Anyone interested in touring Calvert Hall’s campus or learning more about our upcoming plans and ac-tivities can contact Br. Thomas Zoppo, FSc, President, at 410-825-4266.

LeTTeR to the editorAnyone know of students who can use community service hours helping a neighborhood of aging residents?

if any students could help clean up the 6700-6800 block of collingsdale Avenue (Parkville 21234), the elderly residents would be eter-nally grateful. most of these folks are 60 and over on this street. There are lots of creeks and streams in our area that are being clogged by soda/juice bottles and various fast food containers and such.

There is enough debris to take to a recycling plant for a fundraiser as well. A clean up could help to stop littering in the area. Being a litter bug in my day was shameful. i would like to see that again.

Thank you all for reading!

Sincerely,

eugenia Drye, 443-768-2128

THe edGe at Loch Raven Loft

The edge, a social time for middle school students, will be held Friday, may 20, 7-9 pm, at the Loch Raven Loft (the third floor of Babcock Presbyterian church.) The may event features video games, board games, snacks, and prizes.

The edge grew out of a concern for healthy, safe weekend activities for middle school students in the Loch Raven area. Some parents approached the staff for youth for christ (yFc), which runs a campus Life club at Bab-cock Presbyterian on Wednesday after-noons, 3 to 4:15 pm.

The staff of youth for christ talked with the elders of Babcock church, who graciously agreed to allow yFc to turn their 3rd floor gym/youth space into a youth center one Friday a month. A team of parents and adult volunteers (who have all been background checked through yFc) are helping to organize these youth nights. However, these events are not intended to be religious and are not directly associated with the church itself.

Cop Recommends: enlist the help of friends & neighbors when you’re away*

When away from home for a few days, have your phone messages forwarded. The reason: some thieves will call a house to see if anyone is home, and if they get a full voicemail they will assume that no one is home.

Secondly, ask a neighbor to remove news-papers and fliers from your doorstep and have the Post Office hold your mail and packages or have a neighbor collect them from your porch. Always pick up weekly newspapers that have been delivered. The reason: these things are a sign that you are away, making your home a tar-get for burglars.

Finally, make sure that your lawn gets mowed, and in the winter, make sure the walk gets shoveled.
