Susan Thomas remembers her first day volunteering in a prison. She says, “A shudder went through me the first time the door slammed shut behind me, and I was left alone to walk the hallways to meet the women inmates. I was scared.”

Susan, who is a resident of Black Horse Ranch, is part of the outreach program, Celebrate Recovery Inside, which goes into prisons to help women and men overcome their past experiences and find ways to change their lives once their prison sentence is over. “You know we live in a nice bubble in Cypress, and it’s not until you go and meet women, who suffer addictions, who have lost their children through the legal system, and who feel powerless that you realize any of our own problems are so tiny compared to what they are facing,” Susan shared. “But,” she continued, “It is me, who has gained so much from these ladies. Going and sharing takes you out of yourself and allows you to see things so differently.”

For almost two years Susan has been making the trip twice a month, either to The Carol Young Medical Facility, in Texas City, where the women are recovering from health issues or surgery, or The Henly Unit in Dayton. Her journey to a prison volunteer began a few years ago when her own life circumstances felt like she was walking a prison in the free world. She was introduced to Celebrate Recovery, to work on her own recovery, and that was where the seed was planted to begin helping other women who were hurting. She soon became certified to work in area prisons with women and her journey began.

A common thread that is woven in each of these women is a hurt, habit or hang-up in their life and a desire to break free from it. “Many of the women are in for drug related issues,” said Susan. “If they have children, they have either lost custody of them, are fighting for custody, or haven’t seen them in a long time. Some feel like they can’t go on, that the world is against them. They just need someone to talk with, cry with and to put hope in. I refuse to do nothing, I choose to do something.”

As Susan became acquainted with the ladies she learned that there was more help they needed. “When they leave prison they have so little. They are unable to find jobs because they have a record, no clothes, no shoes or toiletries. I have slowly started Amanda’s Attic, named after my daughter, to collect

Sorting clothes for inmates.

Page 7: The Vibe April 2011

April 2011 | The Vibe Magazine 7

items these ladies are in desperate need of. A lot of these women try to get accepted into halfway homes, look for work right away and these items just make that road to their new life a lot easier.”

She has also volunteered at a program called B.A.M.B.I, Baby And Mother Bonding Initiative. This program allows incarcerated women, who have short sentences and have given birth, a chance to keep their newborns with them so that the mother/child bonding experience isn’t broken.

“This has been a huge spiritual walk for me,” she said. “God is the only one who could have gotten me to this place, I would have never walked here on my own accord. This has been the most wonderful gift, the chance to help others and by helping other, I have found that I am the one who has received the biggest blessing.”

High recidivism, hurting families, frustration and anger, all rooted in crime, can easily discourage any volunteers in prison ministry. Susan takes the challenge in stride. She has found that helping the women overcome a battered past and to see a better future will make this world a better place for all of us.

If you would like to donate women’s clothing/ baby clothes and items/ know of job opportunities or want to find out more about prison ministry/Celebrate Recovery, feel free to email Susan at [email protected].

Lots of people love to garden, and love the idea of having fresh herbs at hand. However, not everyone has the space for gardening. If you live in an apartment, you’re planning on moving, or if your work schedule prevents you from putting a lot of time into your garden, then you might want to consider planting a container herb garden. Container gardens have the advantage of being small and portable, but still allow you to keep fresh herbs at your fingertips.

GardensHerb

Container

How to plant * Decide on how many plants you want to grow and then choose a container that’s wide and deep enough to accommodate them comfortably. * Cover the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and then add a layer of compost. * Arrange your plants in the container and fill in the gaps with compost and firm around plants. * Water well. * After planting, put the pot in a sunny spot, near the kitchen door or an outdoor kitchen area so you always have them close to hand.

Aftercare * Place the pot in full sun and water regularly, especially during the summer. * Add a liquid feed to your watering can once a week to give plants a boost during the growing season.

By autumn, annual herbs such as basil and coriander will run out of steam and can be discarded, but it’s a good time to plant new woody herbs such as rosemary. Perennial herbs such as mint, thyme, oregano or chives will die back, but will regrow in the spring. Five herbs to try * Thyme ‘Silver Poesie’ - tastes as good as ordinary thyme but has pretty silver bordered leaves * Curry plant - silver grey leaves and yellow flowers, smells strongly of curry * Curled leaf parsley - If you want a stronger flavour, try the flat leaved variety * Mint - it’s best in pots so it doesn’t overrun your whole garden * Basil - try growing together with tomatoes for a summer dish in a pot

So what’s the big deal about Pineapple? Let me share what I’ve learned about this beautiful, robust, tropical fruit.

First of all, the Pineapple is listed in the top foods available that you can eat without buying Organic. It has one of the lowest residual pesticide loads, making it a safe bet. Secondly, according to Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com, “ Bromelain, the key enzyme in Pineapple, banishes inflammation as effectively as drugs. It reduces swelling, helps against sore throat, treats arthritis and gout, and speeds digestion of proteins. New research is even showing pineapple to be highly effective at cancer prevention and treatment.”

It’s also being touted as offering protection and treatment for macular degeneration...as well as protecting the immune system with powerful antioxidants. The list goes on! All I know is that it’s part of my morning smoothie that I just can’t go without these days. So go...Get your Pineapple on!

See a couple of ideas below for some summer time smoothies!

If you want to bring life and shine back into your hair and increase its volume and luster, then it is time to start using hair rinses. Natural rinses promote hair growth, improve the blood circulation to the scalp, and repair damaged hair. They are easy to make, with common kitchen herbs. Below are some quick homemade rinses for you to try.

Rosemary Hair Rinse RecipeTake two cups of distilled water and add four tablespoons of rosemary. Boil the water till it reduces slightly. Strain the water and allow it to cool. After shampooing your hair, pour this rinse over your hair. Using fingertips give the scalp a good massage as well.

Lemon Hair Rinse RecipeThis hair rinse is ideal for people with blond hair. To prepare the rinse, combine two cups of white vinegar, two cups of pure distilled water, one quarter cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice and a quarter cup of chamomile flowers in a saucepan. Heat the liquid till it reduces slightly. Strain the liquid and keep it aside. Pour over the scalp and hair after shampooing. Finally rinse with cold water.

Sage and Malt Hair Rinse RecipeIn an enamel bowl, mix two cups of malt, two cups of pure distilled water and a quarter cup of sage. Heat the liquid till it reduces slightly. Remove the bowl from the heat source and strain the liquid. Allow the rinse to cool down and then apply it directly after shampooing the hair. Finally rinse the hair with cold water.

Tomato Juice and Cornstarch Hair Rinse RecipeCombine one teaspoon of cornstarch with one cup of fresh tomato juice. Shampoo hair and pour the rinse. Finally rinse the hair with cold water

Texas-Tuscan style draws from the old-world look of Italian vineyards, villas and farmhouses but adds the drama and scale for which the state of Texas is known. Decorating in this hybrid aesthetic does not have to involve renovating your entire home. Instead, use samples of favorite features in the rustic design tradition and combine them with a bold, earthy aesthetic. Texas-Tuscan decor blends well with primitive, western, lodge, bohemian modern, farmhouse, southwestern, Mexican hacienda and country decorating schemes

Large-scale architectural elements set the tone. To go for a totally Texas-Tuscan redesign, consider a iron gate at the entry. Try keeping natural materials unpolished and unpainted for an earthy look. A stone wall, exposed brick, wooden wall posts or ceiling beams looks more old-world Tuscan with a natural finish. Subtly brighten surfaces without smoothing over their rough textures with a thin coat of milk paint in cream, pale yellow, stone gray or a faded earth tone.

But this is Texas, so integrate bits of shine and glam. Bottle green or cobalt glass tile, wall murals of landscape scenes or fresco-like faux finishes on interior walls add a touch of showmanship.

Accessorize with prominent pieces and natural elements. Continue the theme of blending indoors and outdoors by framing windows and doors with hanging plants, window boxes or vases filled with wildflowers. Large woolen rugs in reds, browns, oranges and deep blues bridge the palettes of the traditional west and Tuscany.

Simple Solutions1. Pour 2 tsp. of lemon oil on a clean cloth then wipe your shower doors. This helps keep soap scum from building up. Shaving cream can also be used to remove built up soap scum on doors, walls and fixtures.

2. Remove rings inside the toilet bowl by applying a paste of borax and lemon juice to the stain. Allow to set for 2 hours then scrub clean.

3.Bring a sparkle back to your shower curtains by laundering them with a bath towel. Add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle.

4. Remove nasty hard water buildup around tap fixtures using paper towels soaked in vinegar. Wrap them around the base of the taps for several hours to break down the crud, then wash clean.

5. Remove hair spray and splatter buildup on mirrors by buffing with a lint-free cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol.

When stripping the beds down for laundry, freshen up the mattress

by sprinkling a thin layer of baking soda directly on top of the mattress. Leave sit for a few hours

then vacuum the powder up.

Help keep fabric lamp shades dust-free by using an inexpensive

adhesive lint roller. Hold the shade steady and pass the roller over the

exterior of the shade.

Take that old kitchen apron off the hook and use it

to stash all your spring-cleaning supplies in the

pockets as you go around the house. It leaves your hands free for scrubbing and polishing, plus you

won’t have to lug a cleaning bucket around the house.

ONCE UPON A TIME the weather was cold, the wind blew and the rain poured down. Those days are quickly receeding as Spring is coming to Texas. With welcoming warm weather, and blue skies, it’s the perfect time to venture out and enjoy the Texas sunshine. Creating Reflections ofEleganceElegance

Roadside BouquetsWild flower bouquets can be amazing elements of interior floral decoration, be it for your home or for a special occasion. They are a harmonious bend of color and form, with their predominantly bright colors and blossoms, that vary from large to small.

When these wild flowers are arranged into a creative assortment, their beauty is enhanced to breathtaking heights. To make a simple yet stunning wild flower bouquet, the flowers should be cut to a desired height of various lengths. The larger flowers should be placed first, and the smaller wild flower blossoms should be arranged around them. Fillers like foliage, stalks and stems can be added in the end.

Easy wildflowers to find in this area are: Black-eyed Susan, Indian Paint Brush, Coneflower, White Prickly Poppy, Bluebonnet, Daisy, Buttercups, Crimson Clover, Texas Dandelion, and Yellow Thistle.
