As you may be aware, we asked for financial help for TVP Magazine through
an Indiegogo campaign, which can be found here.
It progressed slowly at first and, because of that, we didnt expect to make it.
Then, following a very generous donation pledge, it took off and you raised103% of the amount. To be honest, it was such a surprise for me,
considering that only 2 weeks before the campaign was suppose to end, we
hadnt reached the 50% mark.
I understand the words thank you and how often people use the phrase, but
I find it a bit irrelevant in many cases This is why I will not dare use it at you
:). Instead, I want to make you aware, if you werent already, that your
contribution to the magazine means that we can run it for a full year withouta problem and thus, you dont need us to thank you - it is far more important
than that, you are now part of this important project.

I live in a town with 3000 local residentsand, each summer, around 50000tourists visit the place. As a result, thereare a lot of wasted resources here. Yousee, apart from the summer period (3-4months), its like a ghost town;thousands of apartments are empty.
I was thinking at one point, why arentthey giving these apartments for free topoor people, with the only conditionattached that they take care of theapartments, and then kick them outwhen the tourists come? At least that
Now, heres the surprise. I wanted to rentan apartment for a half a year to a yearperiod, and even more. Because we livein a system where everybody wants tomake a buck, there are many companiesthat rent apartments, and I had to go to
each of them.
I spent my entire day going from onecompany to another searching for anapartment to rent and, to my surprise, Ifound none.

You see, there are thousands ofapartments that are available to rent, butcompanies prefer to rent them underonly two or three week contracts fortourists, instead of renting it to me forone full year or more. Thats becauseduring the holiday season, the rent for a
week is more expensive than theaverage cost for longer periods of time. For them, it might be more profitable torent apartments to tourists rather thanresidents, considering minimalmaintenance costs. But isnt it acomplete waste of resources to keep
thousands of apartments empty for 8months a year? It really makes youwonder what's the real purpose of thissystem we're living in.My neighbor has a really big house, which he only visits a few days a year to
cut the grass and do a bit ofmaintenance. I am curious about whyhes maintaining this house. At the sametime, lots of poor people are strugglingto survive on a day to day basis to paytheir rents, while such houses just sitempty.

In a large swath of the East Side, bounded by Fifth and ParkAvenues, East 49th and 70thStreets, about 30 percent of themore than 5,000 apartments are
routinely vacant for more than 10months a year because theirowners or tenants have permanenthomes elsewhere , according tothe Census Bureaus latest
American Community Survey. Also, ...the ranks of part-timersare growing. Since 2000, thenumber of Manhattan apartments
occupied by absentee owners andrenters swelled by more than 70percent, from 19,000 up to nearly34,000.

Among all of the 845,000apartments and houses inManhattan, 102,000 were identifiedas vacant in the 2005-9 American
Community Survey. Of those, about33,000 or about 1 in every 25Manhattan homes had an owner
or renter who lived there less thantwo months of the year. (source)This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Such things happen all around theworld.

In China, its estimated that there arearound 64 million empty apartments.64 million! Wow! I find that hard todigest.
Here are some pictures of these ghosttowns. What youre about to see aresome completely empty cities:houses, apartments, schools, mallsand streets that no one uses. (source)

There are millions of homeless people and tens, if nothundreds, of millions of available apartments. Theres morethan enough for all, yet the game we play is damn obsolete, unfair and idiotic overall.
This is why we have to change the game; to base ourdecisions on scientifically-relevant data and when we buildhouses, for instance, build them according to the needs ofpeople, not for the sake of building them in the hope that we
will make a buck.

If you were born in 1980 and you think the world is round instead offlat, knowing full well that you would think the opposite if you hadbeen born in 1089, you are the victim of childhood indoctrination,
Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
Thoughwemayfeelwehaveapretty
solid understanding of the world
around us, I am about to present
arguments which will encourage the
readertoquestionifwhatwehavebeentaught throughout our lives is truthful
andaccurate. Itis difficultforeachofus
to question established beliefs; in
many ways they define who we are as
people. Whatsmore,acceptingthatwe
were wrong is often difficult and
embarrassing because it means
admitting to ourselves that a particular
view needs to be updated. These are
beliefs that we have spent many years
constructing and accepting as truth.
Whenitcomestoschemas,itseemsitis
easier for us to be fooled than to
convince ourselves that we have been
fooled.
A schema is a cognitive framework
or concept that helps organize and
interpret information. Schemas can be
useful because they allow us to take
shortcuts in interpreting the vast
amount of information that is available
in our environment. However, these
mental frameworks also cause us to
exclude pertinent information to
instead focus only on things thatconfirm our pre-existing notions or
beliefs. Schemas can contribute to
stereotypes and make it difficult to
acceptnew,importantinformationthat
does not conform to our established
ideas about the world"[source].
Therefore,beforeIcanbegintopresent
all the solutions that The Venus Project
can offer, a few more crucial elements
ofsociety mustbeaddressed. Myhope
isthatthereaderwillallow themselves
tohonestly reflect upon my arguments
instead ofaccessingtheir schemasand
closing the door to critical thinking.
This is no easy task.
Jacque Fresco states, We were all
brought up to believe that everybody
should have a right to their own
opinion"[source].

Learning how to say I dont know is one of the
hardest things for people to do
Harmless concepts such as which
flavoroficecreamisthebestisnotwhat
he is referring to. He is speaking to the
point that having an opinion, which is
unproven but regarded as factual, often
limits us in our ability to talk with one
another. It prevents us from listening to
and really understanding what people
have to say.
Butmostimportantly,italsosetsusup
to believe more falsities than facts. For
example, If your sister lives across the
way from me and I see 10 guys coming
out of her apartment, I can have all kinds
ofopinions,saysFresco. Shecouldbea
language instructor, a ballet instructor,
music teacher or could be doing anumber of other things." [source]
Instead of opinions, peopleshould learn
how to say, I dont know.
I remember the beginning of the
space program, continues Fresco, someone said, you wont see man on
themoonfor 1000years. A guy likethat
should say, I dont know enough about
rocketry; I dont know anything about
spacetravel;therefore,Icannotgiveyou
an answer, about whether wewill go to
the moon or not. Learning how to say I
dont know is one of the hardest things
for people to do [source]. This is the
first thing the reader must understand.
Many people are quick to have an
opinion based upon their preconceived
schemas and therefore rarely ever say, I
dontknow. Another thing that prevents
peoplefromlearning new information is
that people dont actually communicate
withoneanother. Weinsteadtalkateach
other. Very few people possess theconditioning to actually communicate
with another person. Our modern-day
political atmosphere is a perfect
example of this. The Republicans and
Democrats are absolutely incapable of
communicating with one another.

The same is true for most everyday
civilians. Whether conservative or
liberal,theyhaveabsolutelynoabilityto
listen to one another, lower their
defenses, or have a 2-way conversation
that involves the methodology of the
scientific method. I am referring to the
scientific method being used in the
social context of human behavior. In
other words, speaking from a logical
point of view rather than an emotional
onea conversation which is based onfacts, notopinionswhichservetodefend
a logical fallacy.
Another example is with religious
teachings. Manydifferentreligionshave
a holy book that members read, butamongst each person who reads it, it is
read with a different interpretation.
Onepersonsays, Jesusmeant this; and
theotherpersonsays,Jesusmeantthat;
and a third person says, No, youre both
wrong. This is what he really meant so
today, we have the Lutherans, the
Seventh-day Adventists, the Catholics
because its subject to interpretation, [
source]. Languagesthatare not subject
to interpretation are mathematics,
chemistry, science, engineering,
applied agriculture, physics, etc....
There is not much debate surrounding
engineeringschematics illustrating how
to correctly construct a bridgeno
matter which country theyre from.
Simple laws of physics dictate that if its
not set up correctly, it will collapse. [s
ource].
When engineers talk to each other
[what they say is] not subject to
interpretation. They use math; they use
descriptivesystems. IfI interpretedwhat
another engineer said in the way I think
he meant it, you couldnt build bridges, dams, or power transmission lines. [so
urce].
Concerning the discipline of
chemistry, if the instructions were not
correctlyfollowedinarecipeformakinga desired compound, the desired results
could not be reached. In scientific work,
ones results must be able to be
replicatedandreproducedinexactlythe
same manner by other non-biased
individuals before other scientists and
members of the academic community
support the findings or conclusions.
Therefore, it is fundamentally
impossible to brainwash a child into
believing false principles and ideas
about science, chemistry, mathematics,
physics, and other technical areas
(except pseudoscience).

Many people refer to this assertion as
Nature vs. Nurture and many credible
experts are often speaking up on either
side oftheargument. However, the factis,
children know nothing of hatred,
intolerance, racism, sexism, bigotry,
homophobia, prejudice, money,
employment, economics, politics,
language, accents, religion, capital
punishment, or any other concept
regarded as normal by some in society.
These ideasin addition to the many
philosophies and ideologies we learn in
lifeare almost completely shaped by
our cultures and environments. That is,
they are taught to us by our parents,
society, and our communities. Thesecultural phenomena may seem inherent
to us, but the fact remains that they are
mere mirages. Mirages that consume our
world view and victimize not only
ourselves, but also a lot of other people,
perpetuating a great deal of human
suffering.
By now, you have either reconsidered
thevalidityandbasisofyourworldview,or
you might have found my explanations to
be unsatisfactory. In either case,
take a moment to reflect on the
people you know.
Ask yourself, what makes a person
adopt an allegiance to a political party?
Why doesa personfollow one religion,
but not another? Where do a persons
unique morals and values come from?

The fact is, children are not born with
securedpoliticalorientations;itissimply
ridiculous to claim that a baby knows
enoughaboutpoliticsorevenhumanlife
tosayonewayortheother. Eventoclaim
that our personalities are preconceived
and later contribute to politics is
incorrect. If that were so, then children
who grew up in Poland after the Russian
controlled communist era would still
grow up favoring communism naturally,
rather than the current accepted systemof capitalism.
Inmy own experience, I rememberthe
presidential election of 1992. My
elementary school administration
thought it would be fun to do a mock-election,whereeachstudentcouldcasta
vote for who they wanted to see as their
next president.
Despitethefactthattheentirestudent
body from Kindergarten through 6th
gradehadnounderstandingofpoliticsor
elections andthat instructionon politics
and economics began in middle school
history courses, every student whose
parents allowed it voted in the election.
Of course, it is probably true that many
students just circled a name at random.
However, I remember that the results of
our elementary school election showed
that Bush Sr. received a landslide victory
over both Clinton and Perot.
The demographical data of the area in
which I grew up shows that almost the
entire region is Conservative
Republican. Whats more, a friend I grew
up with asked me whom I had voted for.
We both voted for Clinton. I vividly
remember the conversation in which we
both revealed that our parents were infavor of Clinton. Each of our family
members were Democrats and had
liberal views. However,a few years later,
this same friend changed her views on
politicstoConservativeRepublican. She
is still one to this day.
Is it a coincidence that her family also
changed their political views from die-
hard Liberal Democrats to Conservative
Republicans at the same time she did?
As evidenced from many different
studiesandsurveys,thestatisticsclearly
show that the vast majority of people
adoptthesameviewsonpoliticsastheir
parents. This correlation also holds true
with religious beliefs and many other
social/societal thought processes.

Childhood indoctrination is the
instilling of beliefs or customs into a
child's mindset before that child has
developed the mental capacity and
scientific basis necessary to critically
evaluate such beliefs and customswithout merely accepting them as the
only reality."
Childhood indoctrination happens
whenchildrenaretaughttoacceptasetof
beliefs or customs without question. As parents, many insist that the cultural
norms of their own society,
community, or family must
ultimately be passed onto their
children.
Weadultsaresostronglyindoctrinated,

good parenting skill. Unfortunately,
without the proper training on how to
raise children, such efforts can also have
everlasting and damaging effects on the
childs future morals and values.
One example of this is with the values
being broadcast through the Mainstrea
m Corporate Media networks, or theMCM as I call it. The MCM is a term which
refers to media networks which are
corporately owned.
Essentially, to minimize the risk of
losing financial support from theirinvestors, advertisers, and other
supporters, the MCM often limits or
distorts their coverage and reporting of
newstostoriesthatfavorgovernmentand
corporate policies.
Noam Chomsky has discussed this
concept quite frequently in his public
appearances and in his book titled Man
ufacturing Consent: The Political
Economy of the Mass Media.

This essentially creates enough white noise or distractions so that people dont
consider asking questions or think about societal changes which could negatively
affect the status quo. People who are numb to important issues, or those who are not
nterested in them, help sustain and perpetuate business for the money machines in
capitalism.
In any case, perhaps by examining the values being portrayed in shows like these,
politicians like Mitt Romney might place the blame for the 47% of Americans who
have the entitlement mentality on the real source.
The messages our society teaches children are simply
appalling. Even childrens TV programming andanimated cartoons are full of adult innuendos (Disney

their location.

As people are social beings who learn
fromoneanother,eventhosewhoarenot
directly viewing much of the
programming are still subject to these
values, because they are present in the
same society (schools, advertisements,
comedyroutines,videogames,andsocial
interactions). If people really want to
address why it seems that each younger
generation is losing respect for
traditional values, perhaps it is time to
take a good hard look at our environment.
Cultural values change when the
environment is altered. If this was not
true,thenadoptedchildrenwouldsimply
embrace their birth parents culture
rather than their new parents culture.
MONOPOLY
Another example comes from less
obvious exposure. Growing up, I oftenplayed one of the most popular board
games on the global market; Monopoly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly -
8/12/2019 The Venus Project Magazine Issue 09
43/124
Players move around the gameboard
buying or trading properties, developing
their properties with houses and hotels,
and collecting rent from their opponents,
withtheultimategoalbeingtodrivethem
into bankruptcy.[source]
It is a game that many remember as
incredibly fun. Parents are even able to
play withtheir children, since the gameis
stimulatingevenforadults.Buthowmany
people have ever given any thought to
what the game Monopoly teaches
children? It teaches each player to value
monetary exchange and the acquisition
of private property; that success is
measured by the amount of wealth we
accumulate.
It teaches children to associate money
with power and success. It teaches us to
value the concept of a monopoly of
industry and the business mantra in
general, as forming a monopoly happens
to be the way to winafter all, its in the
name.
Moreover, Monopoly teaches children
to be competitive, rather than
collaborative; that bankrupting our
opponentisjusta partofsuccess and that
because both players have an equal
opportunity from the beginning to
become successful, its a product of
ingenuity, effort, and a little bit of luck.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopolyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly -
8/12/2019 The Venus Project Magazine Issue 09

It doesnt leave much room for us to think about how
one player rolls first and is therefore able to buy up
property before the others; that doing so leaves every
subsequent player thereafter with fewer and fewer
opportunities to buy their own property and oftenresults in paying their predecessors a fee.
Lastly, Monopoly does not teach us to be satisfied
with enough daily luxuries and money to be happy;
rather, it teaches us to get as much money or private
property/possessionsaswecangetourhandsonorto
be acquisitive. Its no wonder why children grow up
today valuing a monetary system like capitalism.
Capitalism reflects the game Monopoly and also
encourages people to hoard and acquire possessions.
The rules of the game exactly match the principles of
the capitalistic monetary system.

Subliminal messages like these are all
around us. Dont be fooled; children are
far more perceptive about these subtle
cues than people give them credit for.
Consider how rapidly a baby is able to
acquire language and the mannerisms of
their environments. It is a scientific fact
thatachildsbrainisfarmoresusceptible
to elements of indoctrination than an
adults brain. A childs brain is very
plastic and will absorb information
rapidly,regardlessofthemannerinwhich
the information is being presented.
From an evolutionary perspective, this
can ensure a childs survival. When a
parent instructs their child not to play
with a knife so that the child will not hurt
themselves or others, no one will argue
that this instruction is wrongful. Likewis
e, when an adult teaches a child moral
values such as treat others the way you
wanttobetreatedandotherideals,these
efforts clearly have no harmful effect onchildren. However, when it comes to
issues which are subject to
interpretation, such as religion, political
affiliations, human or animal rights,
environmental protection, and many
others, a gray area begins to emergeabout which is the correct position to
take. Today, in order to find people who
cannot agree on these issues, we only
need to look in any direction. This isnt
because there is one right answer; its
because the very nature of our language
is open to interpretation. Our language
allows for parents to bring in their own
personalperspectivesonraisingchildren
and,thoughwemayfeelthisisourright,it
can have very disastrous effects on the
childs development.
Childhood indoctrination is the
principle reason why issues such as
racism, nationalism, homophobia,
religion,violence,war,poverty,monetary
systems,and infinite othersareaccepted
within societal structures. All of these
principles are taught and learned; they
are not inherited naturally from instincts,
donotexistwithingeneticcoding,andare
not formed naturally within the human
brain. They are directly or indirectly
learned, reinforced, and taught by adults
to children so that the child may fit inunder the current worldview. This is also
referred to as social conditioning. It can
be purposeful or inadvertent, but
children still pick up cues from their
surroundings and environment, even if
not directly taught.

Teaching adults that a white fluffy
bunny brings them baskets of candy and
beautifully painted hard-boiled eggs
would immediately rouse skepticism.
Similarly, assuring adults that a white man
with 8 flying reindeer (9 if Rudolph is
counted)magicallyflyaroundtheworldin
one night bringing only good people (rich
people) presents would also fail to gain
supporters.
Stories such as these can only fool
young children because children do not
possess the analytical thinking skills
necessary to view the world through their
ownlensoftruth. Theyinsteadhavetorely
on adults to do this for them. The danger
thispresentsisthatifparentshadnottold
their children that Santa Claus isnt real,
would they have believed it to befalse on
their own, and likewise with the Easter
Bunny? This isthereason thatchildrenare
the target group for all indoctrination
ploys. They just dont have the lifeexperience or have any reason to doubt
the word of trusted elders.
It is possible, however,
to brainwash a child into believing
other falsities. As Richard Dawkins points
out, if a person was born to the country of
Pakistan, they would be born into the
Muslim faith. If a person was born into a
Polish family, they would be born into the
Catholic faith (Poland is about 95%
Catholic).
It is therefore impossible to determine
which religion is the correct one, simply
because every region of the world brings
theirchildrenuptothereligionthatmakes
sense to their community. This doesnt
particularly mean religion is false. It
simplymeansthathadachildbeengivena
choiceforthemselves,insteadofadopting
the religion of their parents, perhaps they
would have chosen differently, or would
have chosen nothing at all.

Change is something that
most people are afraid of,hence why the majority ofsocial progress in society
has remained nearlystagnant throughout
history.
The current systems which govern
society (politics, governments,
economics, etc.) are still relying on
ancient philosophies and outdated
thinking and are no longer necessary or
relevant. Iwillalsoarguethatalternatives
to these ancient philosophies far exceed
conventional thinking.
Because these alternatives have never
beenimplementedintheentirehistoryof
human civilization, they will be met withskepticism. Established elite within the
hierarchy, members of the Mainstream
Corporate Media, so-called experts, and
perhapsevenyourselforyourfriendswill
insist that this new system will fail. As
Jacque Fresco outlined in his book TheBest That
Money Cant Buy:
However, if people were to realize that
the majority of changes that The Venus
Project, the alternative system, is calling
for are actually naturally occurring on
their own, perhaps they would be met
with less resistance. They would begin to
see that the changes would make society
function exceedingly more efficiently
and practically.
Many of the proposals and aims of The
Venus Project are met with resistance
specificallybecausepeoplecannotletgo
of their uninformed and ignorantopinions. (Ignorant means: lacking
knowledge or awareness about
something in general or in particular. It
does not mean stupid.Please understand
that as human beings, everyone is
ignorant in one or more conceptualarenas). Forexample, nogovernmentever
refers to itself as the enemy of another
nation. Its always that the other
nation is its enemy. Similarly, no one
refers to their own education or views
as ignorant. The hardest three words
to say in all languages are: I dont
know. People find it very difficult to
say, I dont know. Ill have to look into
this matter objectively before
condemning what youre saying.

Still, as much as I wish everyone could

AA WORLDAA World : Automated - Autonomous World is a series of articles about the current
state of Automated and Autonomous technology to try to demonstrate how The
Venus Project concepts can be feasible even with today's technology.

If you are familiar with The Venus Project then you have heard the word automation manytimes. You already know that The Venus Projects technology relies heavily on automated andautonomous systems to properly work. But how far can such technologies go today? Can wedesign complex production/delivery systems to be fully automated and autonomous (AA)?
What about transportation, security, and research? Can these fields rely on such systems? In this series of articles, I will try to show you what AA can do today and what they may do in thenear future.
What is automation ?
Automation or automatic control, is the use of various control systems for operatingequipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens, switching in telephone networks, steering and stabilization of ships or aircraft and otherapplications with minimal or reduced human intervention.
The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor, however, it is also used to save energyand materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision.Automation has been achieved by various means including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic and computers, usually in combination. Complicatedsystems, such as modern factories, airplanes and ships typically use all these combinedtechniques. - Wikipedia
What is autonomous technology ?
Autonomous technology refers to machines that act independently of humans. They behave inways that mimic humans and free people from repetitive, unstimulating jobs.
Most advanced aircraft are almost entirely autonomous, in the sense that they can take off, fly, obey air traffic control, avoid other aircraft, and land, all without human intervention, exceptin plotting a destination. So for this article think about automated technology as machines that function with little, ifany, human control.

goodsandservices
-
8/12/2019 The Venus Project Magazine Issue 09
69/124
It is quite a challenge to define either goods or services. Goods can be anythingfrom 3D printers to furniture, gadgets, clothing and so much more, while servicescan be anything from medical services to entertainment and different kinds ofmaintenance services.
Still, I will try to make sense of these concepts and show you how goods can bemade in a fully automated way and how services can become completely
autonomous. Before you think about the notion of goods, it is a must for you to read our article onAbundance. It is quite short, concentrated, and of course, free.In short, it is quite erroneous to think that the same goods will be produced andpeoples wants will be the same in a TVP-like society. Also, for hugely complexprojects such as the Large Hadron Collider, you may think that if you cannot
automate all the processes of its construction, no one will want to get their handsdirty and help with the process. If you think like that, you are missing themotivation factor. Consider that if there is something that cannot be built in afully automated fashion with todays technology, it does not stop it from beingbuilt. People can still get involved here and there, although they will also likely bereplaced by machines in the years to come, regardless of sector, thus giving themthe opportunity to focus on whatever else they might like to do.So, supposing you have read that article about Abundance, lets start our journeywith this one.
But before we continue, you have to understand that todays AA technologies are engulfed in themonetary system and not fully expressed. For the sake of demonstration, lets say someonewanted to build an automated restaurant, although possible from a technical perspective, itsdevelopment and deployment would be limited by the financial system. That is why you probablydont see many AA restaurants today. It is because of the impediments in our social system, nottechnological limitations. The technologies you will find below, however, are considered not fortheir financial worth, but rather for their technical worth.

COMPLEXITY AND MASS PRODUCTION
Have you ever seen the DiscoveryChannels How It's Made TV series?
If not and you are curious about howproducts are made in automatedfactories, then you should take a look atit.
I have to warn you, though - it covers 23seasons, and thats because there are so
many products that are producedtoday.
From toothpaste to umbrellas, cars, shoes, bolts, cookies, cakes, laptops, furniture, and everything else you canimagine, nearly all are created inautomated factories already.
To illustrate just some of the complexityof what can be done today, Ill introduceyou to one friendly robot, a car that isbuilt in 3 to 5 days, and 3D printers that
may print your next smartphone.

-
8/12/2019 The Venus Project Magazine Issue 09
72/124
Why is he different from other robots?Well, its because you program it bysimply showing it what to do. Thats all ittakes! So, if you want it to do complexthings, then you can just show him howto do it, step by step, like taking his arm
and moving it to the place you want to,then the griper and so on, which is mucheasier than training a kid to dosomething. You can take its arm, grab abottle with it, and then put the bottle in abox, again with its arm. This robotmemorizes all of these actions and canrepeat it indefinitely, or until you teach itsome new tricks. The robot gets it anddoes the work. (read more about it)You can program this robot to do prettymuch anything you can imagine. Isuppose the only limitations may be its
hardware. But also consider that grippersare getting extremely complex, as wehave shown in our previous AA Worldarticle about Construction, and with theadvent and continual expansion of 3Dprinting, many products will be produced
in a completely new way - not evenrequiring robots for assembly or othertasks.Baxters software can be easily updatedso that its speed and complex behaviourcan evolve.Imagine teaching a Baxter-like robot toprepare many kinds of foods (a robotchef), for instance. There are actuallyplenty of such robot-chefs, and otherkinds of machinery that make the processof creating food an automated one.

Teslas Model S car is not only themost efficient electric car, as well asthe safest one on the roads today, butthe way it is built is almost fullyautomated.
It only takes 3 to 5 days to get from rawmaterial to a full car. They have 160robots continuously working onalmost all aspects of the carsconstruction. The same robot can putthe seats in the car, change its own
tools, and then put some glue aroundthe windshield and fit the windshieldonto the car. The same robot thendoes that for the rear glass of thevehicle - all done by one robot. Thinkabout that!
They also have robots that paint thecars, others that handle welding andyet others that actually transport thevehicles inside the factory in acompletely autonomous way.

CAN WE PRINT A SMARTPHONE?
-
8/12/2019 The Venus Project Magazine Issue 09
83/124
Do we dare think that we could print a full-featuredsmartphone, for instance, with the processor, the screen, and
all its parts, together? We may not be there yet, but letsexamine some current technologies that allow us to think
realistically about this ambition.
3D printers are becoming a commontool among enthusiasts, schools andeven manufacturers. The great thingabout 3D printers is the layer-by-layeradditive process. It means, forinstance, that it can make a tool with allits functional parts, all at once.
This is an amazing thing, since it meansthat you do not need multipletechniques and factories to createdifferent parts of the same thing.Because of this process, it can also

When it comes to such devices, it may still be far easier, smarter, less resourceconsuming and more efficient overall to build their respective parts separately, andthen just put them together. So maybe print the parts, then assemble them.
It is already possible to print electrical circuits. Nearly all common electronicmaterials, including conductor, dielectric, resistor, and semiconductor inks, can beprocessed and printed. We can also print conformal sensors, antennas, shieldingand other active and passive components, as Aerosol Jet has proven.
This is an example of putting this idea into use:
A fully functional game controllerprinted with one single printer(plastic plus electrical circuit all-in-one)A fully functional loudspeaker
was also created a few monthsago using only 3D printers.

Interestingly, Aerosol Jet can also printon non-flat surfaces. This may meanmore than you realize. You see, yourhome PC, smartphone, tablet, andother electronic devices have thisthing called a motherboard ormainboard, which may be the
biggest thing inside your device.
This core component is a smart circuitboard, regulating the flow of energybetween nearly all of your devicescomponents: processor, memory, etc..The ability to print circuits on non-flatsurfaces may mean that processors,
memory chips, graphic cards, etc.
could be connected together indevices of any shape or format.
We could even print themotherboards functionality right onthe inside case of the device, gettingrid of the motherboard as a
separated component. (source)
This approach reduces the resourcesconsumed and simplifies the method, while potentially increasing thecomplexity of the motherboardsfunctionality.

Although we did not show how to print a cpu or a graphic card, such examples showus that there is already progress when it comes to printing electronic devices.
For instance, not long ago, the same Aerosol Jet system printed a smart-wing for adrone, with its full electronic parts included:

Printing electronics will be a hugechange in the way we view 3D printing, because electronics are far morecomplex in what they can do and thusthe wide variety of their uses canexplode quite rapidly.
Todays printers can use around 100materials: from food ingredients towaxes, ceramics, plastics and evenmetals, and the list is expanding.Combining those materials with new, more accurate techniques means that3D printers can become the main
technology that produces the goods weneed. For a more extensive read about3D printers, check the Wikipedia article. The above Tesla Model S factoryexample and the increasing complexity
of 3D printers are proof that verycomplex goods can already be producedin an automated and autonomousfashion, while the Baxter robot opensthe window to the use of a new kind ofprogrammable assembly robot, in a waythat is far more varied, complex and easyto maintain.

RESOURCES AND THE ZERO MARGINAL COST
But when it comes to resources and producing any kind of product, heres theway I think of them:- You make a PRODUCT out of a MATERIAL(s).
- The MATERIAL(s) is created using autonomous technologies and the leastenergy consumed.- The MATERIAL is recyclable- The PRODUCT is recyclable
So, lets say you make a 3D model of a house out of a type of plastic. Once youare finished with it, you should be able to easily, and in an automated fashion, recycle that house model into a different kind of object without much waste, orno waste at all, with very little energy consumption ( renewable energy perhaps). So, that house model might become a car model, a toy, a tool, or whatever.
Get it?
It is very important that all of these goods and products are produced in the mostresource and energy-efficient manner. We live on a finite planet, after all
To make the full case for that, it would take at least two special TVP Magazineissues, perhaps going through the latest in nanotechnology.

This is what atoms do. When you die,the parts that made up you will notdisappear. They will become part ofsome other things: mountains, grass,
stars, freezbies, chocolate, and soon. We can already manage theseatoms to a certain extend and createstuff with them.
We organize atoms by theirproperties and divide them intocategories: iron, carbon, hydrogen,
etc. We then take these categoriesof clusters of atoms, each withmultiple properties, and we modelthem like we do with plasticine. Ofcourse, its much more complicatedthan that, but this is the entireprocess of making anything. Wemake things out of selectedmaterials. The more intelligently andefficiently we learn to play with thisstuff, the more things we will be ableto mold them into: electronics, foods, wheels, houses, bicycles, airplanes, socks, and so on.
We have already shown that we havethe methods of building all of thisstuff in automated ways, meaningarranging all of these materials thatwe find in nature and/or isolate, buthow much can we efficiently recyclethem and reuse them to build otherkinds of stuff?
Imagine a bunch of kids playing with
Lego pieces. There are a finiteamount of lego pieces, but theybuild many toy-things with them:buildings, cars, houses, food plates,
forks, and so on. By arranging thepieces in different ways, they cancreate a multitude of things. Themore they reuse the pieces whenthey want to build new things, theless resources (pieces) theyconsume.
If they want to build a Lego car, andno longer need the Lego house, theycan disassemble the house and turnit into a car, and maybe even havesome spare Lego pieces left out ofthat to be used later on to buildother objects.
If we replace the childrens work withsome machines that build theseLego parts, and these machines arepowered by the Sun, then the cost ofbuilding new Lego things is Zero (wedont have to pay the kids to do thatanymore :) ). The kids may need foodto have the energy to build all of
these toys, but the machines can useunlimited power from the Sun, andthen recycle the pieces (reuse them). In the end, it wont cost them anyresources and energy to build acontinually recycleable world ofLego like products.

The same goes for the idea of ZeroMarginal Cost, which refers to resources
rather than money. It means that it mayinitially cost you to build a thing, but itwont cost you more to build otherreplicas. For instance, if you buy a 3Dprinter, the costs are only for building thefirst one, because this 3D printer canprint other 3D printers. Sure, you stillneed the material to build more 3D
printers, but nothing more than that. It isessentially a self-replicator and, moreand more, people are printing 3D itemswith types of materials that are easilyrecyclable (like Lego pieces).
So, it may become like a Lego game, where you have a finite amount of
materials (lets say some sort of plastic)that Earths big kids use to build theirtoys with their 3D printers and you canbuild, recycle, and rebuild all sort of toyswithout using more resources than we
already have, simply because you reusethem all the time, very much like the
Lego pieces.Making these materials act like Legopieces may seem difficult to grasp atfirst, but take a look at the Filabot, forexample, which can recycle plastic thatyou already have in your home andplastic models you had previously
created with your printer, directly intoyour ink supply.
So, if you have plastic bottles at yourhome, or old toys, or whatever is madefrom plastic, you can let this machinetransform it into ink for your 3D printerso that you can create other things with
that plastic, exactly like the Lego piecesthought experiment. However, thismachine uses just a fraction of theenergy to do that.

Its difficult to enclose services into asingle concept for discussion, becausealmost anything can be viewed as aservice. However, I will try to showcasesome of the complex services we use (orwill use in the near future) and thus, Ihope to prove that their complexity is a
proof that almost everything in terms ofso called services can be automatized.I mentioned earlier that some goods, ormore goods, are becoming information-products. If I have a picture file on mycomputer, it does not cost me anythingto copy and send it so that you also have
it on your own computer. Theproduction of a new digital photo isfree. It may move a few electrons hereand there, but the energy consumptionis so small that it is basically a freeprocess. That is, the information is free. Now, think about the 3D printing that wehave already talked about, and combinethat with the digital world. Lets say thatthe picture file I sent to you was insteada 3D project file. So imagine the scene: Isend you a 3D project file which doesnt
cost us a thing, you open it with anyrelevant free 3D printer software outthere, and then you print it - usingrecyclable plastic and a printer that wasprinted with another printer. Thenfurther consider all of that beingpowered by renewable energy. How
does that sound to you?Such typical usage transforms the 3Dprinting process into an information-technology. There are already tons ofwebsites where anyone can download3D model files for all kinds of things:toys, tools, shoes, parts to build a new
3D printer, and more. As a sample, Thingiverse is one of the websites where youcan go and download tens of thousandsof 3D models for free.On the other hand, there are twoservices that seem more complex andneedy that we all use, regardless ofwhether we want it or not: healthservices and food services. We all eatand we all want to be healthy.

FOOD
Today, many people may prefer to eatout at a restaurant. Theres no need toprepare the food or personally clean upafterwards. Plus, you cannot easily makeall of these delicacies you tend to findavailable in restaurants :).However, before we dive into how to getto the food, lets briefly highlight howfood is made. In the How Its Madeseries that I mentioned at the beginning

IBM WATSON
But what if you eat something and youfeel sick? What do you do?
Well, it depends, but you should not askme, you should ask your smartphone.Artificial Intelligence software like Watson, invented by IBM and capable ofreading millions of documents in just fewseconds, can help you with your problem. It understands human language almost
perfectly, helping it win on Jeopardy, agame of words and knowledge, against
the worlds top two champions back in2011.
Watson is currently working in medicineand prescribes treatments for varioussymptoms. It is still in testing, but hasalready proven itself to be a huge stepforward in both speed and accuracy.

You can also watch a 13 minute talk by the same

This is just an educated idea right now, but we can also envision fullyautomated pharmacies where you can get your medicine from. They existnow and are in limited use.
These are not toys, however. They arealready very accurate, often more so thana visit to your doctor, and are continuallyimproving. It may not be long before theycompletely replace most family doctors.
So then, imagine that your health iscontinuously monitored by such non-intrusive devices and made sense byapps which constantly fee this data to aWatson-like AI.The AI can then recommend to you what
kinds of foods to eat, if and what kinds ofphysical exercises to make, and muchmore to help you achieve and retainoptimum health.

DAVINCI ROBOT-SURGEON
DaVinci is a robot that has already been in service for well over a decade (source). Its arms are very precise and it even enables surgeons tooperate it from long distances. So, if you need surgery, a surgeon fromacross the world can do the job. However, the significance of this robot-surgeon is actually far greater than that. What happens when it can
learn from these surgeries and then operate without human help?

Some parts of surgeries and fullsurgeries that are not extremelycomplicated can already be fullyautomated, such as certain types of eyeprocedures that do not require a highdegree of complexity, or the field ofurology which has integrated robotics
into many procedures including radicalcystectomies, surgical nerve grafting andpyeloplasty.
Robotic surgery has almost entirelytaken over radical prostatectomy and therole of surgical robotics is continuouslyexpanding. Robotic surgery helps
improve patient outcome by minimizingthe surgeons natural movement tremors, increasing range of motion, decreasingblood loss, decreasing length of hospitalstay, and decreasing postoperative pain.Since the field of Urology deals with verydifficult and delicate procedures, robotics offers a significant advantage
by allowing for far greater accuracy, flexibility, smoother actions, and greaterrange of motion.Integrating sensors in the human body
can provide an entangled relationshipwith the robot than what is possible witha human surgeon, allowing the robotgreater surgical accuracy.
For instance, if it were removing a tumor, the tumor could be injected with a
fluorescent fluid that the robot'scameras can identify, thus learningwhich cells are tumorous in order toremove it with much great precision. Ifwe manage to create a more accurate 3Dmap (or sensorial map - tissue texture, etc) of the patients body, then perhaps arobot can interpolate and do the job that
a surgeon can. (source1)(source2)(source3)But we might not need surgery in thefuture. Tiny nanobots might learn howto fix us from inside-out or keep track ofour health, providing the right treatmentat the right time and place in a
personalized manner that could reduceor remove the need for many of todayssurgical procedures.

RIBA THE ROBOT NURSE
The last one on my list of health services is nursing. Some people, especially old folks, need assistance when it comes to health-relatedissues. There are already certain kinds of robots used in hospitals to
keep an eye on patients, but sure, it may take more to fully replacethe human factor.
Similar to surgical procedures, technologies that monitor oneshealth in non-intrusive ways can reduce the need for nursing.Of course there are many health-related issues that still requirehuman assistance, so this is only intended to showcase how rapidly
technology is advancing and how health services are becoming moreand more automated, accurate and efficient. Its not science-fictionanymore to monitor your health from home, using small andinexpensive devices, or to be assisted by AI when you get a diagnosisand treatment.

internet connection, I am able to editphotos, videos and music, build websitesand manage this magazine (and more).A few years ago such things could only behandled by huge teams of expensiveprofessionals.I can now, on my own, even removebackground noise from audio recordings, stabilize shaky video footage, record witha cheap camera in front of a green screenand then add my own background, improve the image quality, and anythingelse you might imagine: making 3Danimations, radio shows, video shows, slideshows :), websites, programs, etc.

Software plays the most important rolewhen it comes to automating a process: arobot without software is a mechanicalcorpse.
Often, its the hardware, the robot itself, limiting the capabilities of the software
(although the opposite can also be true). When it comes to the internet and thedigital world, software is rarely held backby hardware, which is why we can allcreate and use so many tools.
Want to carry an orchestra in yourpocket? You can add a violin, piano, guitar, drums, and all the musicalinstruments you can imagine from singleapp, and thats only one category ofthings you can do with a smartphone.
Your smartphone and computer havebecome the gateway to a plethora ofservices: from communication toentertainment, work to health, collaboration and management.

We are all somewhat aware how much information is online. Justconsider Wikipedia, which has around 750000 articles at the moment.
But many people may find it hard to taste the great amount ofinformation which was not written for their own personal educationlevel, or presented in a way that they find entertaining and engaging. This is why I am suggesting the following scenario:
If you want to know more about lions, just say that
to your computer and it will teach you about lions
in a way that you will find extremely entertaining
and educational.
That sentence probably seems very simplistic and almost devoid ofmeaning, but it is way, way more interesting and profound than you mayrealize.

Before I explain the awesomeness of this idea, I want to make you aware that we have alreadypublished an extensive article about such new ways of rethinking education in one of our previousissues (link here) and I recommend that you go back and read that article after you finish this one. Ibet you will find it very interesting: it is about games and linux, friends and Watson, Darwin andviruses, and much more.
Back to our story, let me explain to youthe beauty behind this idea.Computers already understand you tosome degree, even if its not perfect.Google displays online searches in apersonalized way, depending on whereyou are from, what have you searched
for before, and so on.
Understanding human language is notsomething new and as we have alreadyseen, IBMs Watson is working onmastering that. Uderstanding languageis only one part of the entire thing, since
computers can also examine pictures, videos and audios and make sense ofthem.IBMs Watson can already searchthrough millions of videos, audios andphotos and display results based onthose sources. Lets say you want to
search what Jacque Fresco has to sayabout politics. A Watson-like systemcould show you a video clip with himtalking about politics, or play an audioportion of a lecture, or both combined.Quite amazing isnt it?
Lets go even further. Check out this picture:
A bad picture of a cat, isnt it? Not veryimpressive?
Well, it was BUILT by a computer thatknew nothing about cats. It watched 10million randomly selected YouTubevideo thumbnails over the course ofthree days and, after being presentedwith a list of 20,000 different items, itbegan to recognise pictures of catsusing a "deep learning" algorithm. Onits own, it deduced what a cat looks likeand drew it.

Now, what if, when you search forsomething, the search engine alreadyknows your current level ofunderstanding of that topic and onlydisplays the results that you willunderstand and prefer? Even better,
what if the results are not writings thatwere previously written, but arewritten by the software in directanswer to your question, using themost up-to-date knowledge on thesubject?Almost all smartphones with iOS, Android, and even Windows 8 can do thisto a limited extent. Just over toGoogle.com, click on the mic icon andsay What is the distance to themoon? to have Google tell you with avoice, not only in text.More than that, there is software thatcan actually create news articles. In
March of this year, an earthquake hitCalifornia. Three minutes later, a robotcreated a short post about theearthquake, with all the important
information in it. Read the article here and see if you would have been ableto tell whether it was written by arobot or a human. This is not anisolated case. Many websites andcompanies use such software to write
their news. These robots can eventrack events and provide updates. Some research shows that manypeople could not tell the differencebetween articles written by robots andhuman written articles. (source)So, as you can see, the idea of acomputer understanding you quitewell, and writing articles specificallyfor you, is not science fiction at all. Now, if they can master video gamesand so many other controls (e.g. youusing your smartphones speechrecognition to set up your alarm orsend a message), they could also
control all kinds of software. So is notfarfetched to learn that they can alsocreate videos, like this company isshowcasing using a similar software.
