A Message From Your PrimeFit Instructor, Clayton Hayworth** We Need Protein **What is protein?Proteins are large compounds made by combining smaller amino acids. Proteins in the diet are known as macronutrients, and contribute energy (calories) to the body. Each gram of protein contains 4 calories.

There are 20 amino acids used to build proteins. Proteins that do not have all 20 amino acids are called incomplete proteins. Protein sources containing all 20 amino acids are referred to as complete proteins. Choosing complete protein sources will ensure you are getting all of the amino acids that your body needs.

Some amino acids can be made in the body and are not essential in your diet. Amino acids that cannot be produced by the body are called essential amino acids, which should be included in your diet.

How is protein used by the body?Proteins have many different jobs within the body. As previously mentioned, the body uses proteins for energy. Protein is also used as an enzyme, which starts reactions within the body, including metabolism, and gene growth and repair. Proteins are also used by the body to carry signals from one part of the body to another and to form structures, including muscles.

How much protein do I need in my diet?Protein should account for 10-35 percent of your daily caloric intake. Many nutrition experts also recommend an intake of 1 gram of protein per 1 kilogram of body weight (0.4 g per pound).

Consuming too much protein may be harmful to the body. High amounts of protein in the diet put stress on the kidneys and liver as they try to dismantle and dispose of the extra protein.

Which foods are good sources of protein?Sources of protein include meat products (hamburger, fish, chicken), dairy products (cheese, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese), eggs, tofu, lentils, and soy milk.

Eating complete protein (containing all amino acids) will help ensure that you do not become deficient in essential amino acids. Complete proteins include meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, and soy (a non-animal source). Nuts, grains, fruits, and vegetables are typically incomplete. For this reason, it is important for vegetarians to pair non-animal products wisely in order to consume all essential amino acids in their daily diet.

PrimeFit Star of the MonthDee Blakewell has rededicated her time and effort to exercise and staying on top of her health. Not only does she come to morning chair class most days, she also does one-on-one Personal Training sessions with Clayton. In the month of April she did not miss even one Personal Training session! That is very commendable! Despite aches and pains, she makes it a point to stay healthy. Keep up the good work, Dee!

Favorite Fair FoodsFair season is underway, and one of the highlights of these annual festivals is the delicious fare! Tempt your taste buds with these classic foods:

Cotton candy — Originally called “fairy floss,” this colorful, fluffy spun sugar was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 and has become a favorite of fairgoers.

Corn dogs — Hot dogs dipped in cornmeal batter, deep-fried and served on a stick have been staples since the 1940s.

Funnel cakes — Crisp on the outside and light and airy on the inside, this fried dough dessert is traditionally topped with powdered sugar, but fruit, chocolate and ice cream are popular add-ons.

Candy apples — Tart, crisp apples are covered in sweet, hard candy or creamy caramel to make this snack-on-a-stick.

Kettle corn — Those who can’t decide between sweet and salty get the best of both worlds in this popcorn treat seasoned with sugar and salt.

Looking Back at Summer CampsFor over a century, summer camps have provided countless children the opportunity to connect with nature, learn valuable skills and create memories. In the late 1800s, overnight camps began popping up in the northeastern U.S. as a means for boys to break away from city life and build character, and were generally geared toward those from wealthy families. By the early 1900s, summer camps grew in number and diversity. National organizations like the YMCA and Boy Scouts catered adventures for boys from all social classes. Many of these camps focused on military basics and survival skills. At about the same time, summer sleep-away camps for girls were established to teach life skills and encourage independence. The Camp Fire Girls and Girl Scouts were among the programs that provided these outdoor experiences for young women.Starting in the 1950s, specialty camps began to concentrate on specific pursuits, such as academics, art, sports and music. Camps were also created for children with special needs and medical conditions. Today, there is a camp for nearly every interest.A trend of traditional, rustic outdoor camps has emerged, as well as camps for adults who yearn to relive their childhood.

Hamilton HistoryAlexander Hamilton, the Founding Father whose image graces the $10 bill, rose from humble beginnings to help shape America.

Hamilton was born on the Caribbean island of Nevis, most likely in 1755. His family was poor and moved to St. Croix, where Hamilton began working at a young age. His self-taught intelligence impressed local businessmen, who sent him to the Colonies for an education.

With the American Revolution looming, Hamilton took an interest in politics and wrote his first pamphlet supporting a trade boycott of England. He left college to join the Continental Army, where he caught the attention of Gen. George Washington and became his advisor.

After leaving the military, Hamilton ran a thriving law firm in New York City. In 1787, he served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and was the primary writer of the Federalist Papers, a series of essays that promoted the Constitution. Two years later, he was appointed the first Treasury secretary and created the country’s financial structure, which included a national bank and the U.S. Mint.

Hamilton also founded the New York Post newspaper and established the service that would become the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was mortally wounded in a duel with his political rival Aaron Burr on July 12, 1804.

Favorite Fair FoodsFair season is underway, and one of the highlights of these annual festivals is the delicious fare! Tempt your taste buds with these classic foods:Cotton candy — Originally called “fairy floss,” this colorful, fluffy spun sugar was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 and has become a favorite of fairgoers.Corn dogs — Hot dogs dipped in cornmeal batter, deep-fried and served on a stick have been staples since the 1940s.Funnel cakes — Crisp on the outside and light and airy on the inside, this fried dough dessert is traditionally topped with powdered sugar, but fruit, chocolate and ice cream are popular add-ons.Candy apples — Tart, crisp apples are covered in sweet, hard candy or creamy caramel to make this snack-on-a-stick.Kettle corn — Those who can’t decide between sweet and salty get the best of both worlds in this popcorn treat seasoned with sugar and salt.
