There is also a baclcrial delrrent but ils long-range

side-effects could be worse than the locusts.

Their hopes are flint native blackbirds will eat

many oflhe bugs and that, being naluratly migra-

is believed that flese locusts were blown here by

hurricanes Gilbert and loan during one of their

feeding frenzies on the African coasl.

The specimens exalnined here were fotmd to

be: firsl exhausted and then hungry.

The first specimen positively identified as an

African locust was found by an agricullurc iospec-

lot at Roosevelt Rouds Naval Station shortly after

Ihe storms passed. The swarms have appurentlybeen dispersed all over the Caribbeau. The indi-

viduals found in Vieques were discovered by

Elections Results SlowNo Changes For ViequesAlthough the counting and recounting is still

going on in San Juan, there can be no doubt aboutthe outcome in Vieques where incumbent MayorManuela Santiago ColIazo (PNP) has won by acomfortable margin of more than 500 votes.

This may give the Mayor four more years inwhich to bring her many projects to fruition but italso means four more years ofbeing an oppositionparty municipality since the incumbent GovernorRafael I-lern.ndez Col6n (PPD) also won.

Losing Vieques candidate Dimaso Serrano(PPD) apparently went for broke in the long, loudrace and there is a movement among the partyfaithful to launch a series offund-raising food salesto forestall rumored foreclosures of mortgagesassumed during the campaign.

REQUIEM MASS FOR DEAD PRISONERAlthough expected protest demonstrations were

cancelled in Vieques the memory of Angel Ro-dffgue CristdboI was honored in a Mass said byPadre Ayala of the Episcopal Church.

Rodrfguez, arrested with 20 other protesters fortrespassing on a Marine beach in Vieques severalyeus ago, was subsequently found hanged in hiscell in a Federal prison in Florida.

Many independence advocates consider him amartyred hero and massive demonstrations werestaged at Federal installations in San Juan.

ENCUENTRO CONHATUEY

The Taller de Artes Isla Nena, Asso. (TAINA),working with mini-grants from the P.R. Commu-nity Foundation and the National Endowment forthe Arts, staged its first production on November19 at the City Center with the participation of 25student dancers, actors and singers.

The performance was received with warm en-thusiasm by an audience of some 300 includingmany schoolchildren whowaxed ecstatic. Manyofthem requested tojoin the workshop group imme-diately after curtain call.

The musical drama recounted experiences ofthe natives before and after the arrival of the Con-quistadores The children danced, sang and beattheirdrums as the stories were enacted and narrated

of the peaceful life in the villages and of thebattles and of the deaths of local chiefs Yabureibo

It’s an ambitious full-costume dramatic per-formance for staging at City Center (which holdssome heavy drawbacks as a theatre: no dressingrooms, no backstage area, no stage curtains, nowayon or off the stage except through the audience, noprompter’s box, no slope, no split levelling, etc.),TAINA does plan, however, to do some repeatper-formances, both here and in the schools.

The members rehearse on Saturday morningsand have been granted the services of the munici-pal schoolbus to and from the workshop which sofarhas been someone’s house orporch or yard. It ishoped that TAINA will be able at some future datto acquire permanent quarters.A full color poster commemorating the Encuen
