Similar trends can be noticed as for
temperature and direct solar radiation, while
significant differences can be noticed as for
the wind speed values in correspondence to
the four receptors

3. SIMULATION AT THE SCALE OF THE MEDAGLIE D’ORO CO MPLEXRESULTS
WINTER:
SUMMER:
• Irrelevant differences as for wind speed and temperature
• Considerable reduction of direct solar radiation in Sc. 2, 3 and 4
• Negligible wind speed variations
• Considerable reduction of direct solar radiation in Sc. 2, 3 and 4
Luisa Pastore, Phd Student at Università degli Studi di Palermo
• Considerable reduction of direct solar radiation in Sc. 2, 3 and 4
• Significant decrease of temperature registered in correspondence
of receptors A and C, positioned near the buildings walls
overlooking the internal area of the complex, and for receptor E,
positioned in the open area.

CONCLUSIONS
The research show the effectiveness of the integration of plants with the built
environment for:
• The microclimate mitigation and the enhancement of the OUTDOOR COMFORT
(∆T up to 3°C)
• The improvement of building performance and of INDOOR COMFORT
(∆T up to 4,3°C)
Luisa Pastore, Phd Student at Università degli Studi di Palermo
and demonstrate the importance of deeper approaches for high accuracy
investigations on real urban and building scale thermal comfort levels.
Further researches are being held to:
• Assess the effect of the use of vegetation also in other Social Housing complexes
of the city of Palermo (with different environmental conditions)
• To validate it also in a COST-BENEFIT PERSPECTIVE
