    Core 13

    Core 13 and friends........

How many times have you read a good book or short story, seen a specific character on T V,the movies, or even some branch of the internet that made you think of yourself? Once, twice ormaybe never? Maybe you were reminded of another person...good or bad. My grandsons place meas the first Obi-Wan Kenobi, but the youngest says I am the man behind the man behind the curtain inthe Wizard of Oz. Oh, through the eyes of children!

I have seen several Ebenezer Scrooge type people in my day, and I am referring to the man beforehe went to sleep on Christmas Eve. Charles Dickens was the best at creating memorable charactersin literature, I think. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was great also, but I never did see a soul so clever asHolmes, but I did feel a tad personally close to Watson.

In the Bible there is one Old Testament figure who might have left his genes in me...namely Jonah! Iunderstand Jonah. I have been down the same roads and wallowed in fish bellies of which he wasinside. I have wanted to do MY thing. I wanted my pleasure rather than a religious occupation. I have

  • run from the Lord and then ran to and for my own desires and dreams. I know Jonah, and I sadlyconfess to have followed him more than any other Bible character. That is a pretty sicktestimony! Eventually Jonah did what the Lord wanted and ran a really huge revival crusade at non-Jewish Nineveh and many were saved! His sermon was not long either.....I know you love that!

Perhaps the major characteristic Jonah and I shared was that of "selfishness"! Not a lust for money, fame, power, even beaches, bikinis, and palm trees. I just wanted to be my own god! Alone, doing myown thing as did Jonah. I wanted to be in control....not The Lord! That sense of self ownershipautomatically moves God away from the scene and out of thoughts, and away from any futuremeaningful and genuine Godly plans/actions. It is sad and very wrong! This is sin...making one's selftheir own personal god, but never admitting nor confessing the fact.

We hear too much about statues today. Commonly, in Bible Times, and around the ancient world, ahuman constructed statue or something of a totem pole was fashioned into a god toworship. Remember the golden calf in Exodus? We see that as rather ridiculous if we are a believer inChrist today. Nevertheless, that inward desire to be God unto ourselves will be here and something tocombat within ourselves until Jesus closes the age!

So, will we seriously evaluate how we view ourselves in light of God's amazing love and His will forour personal lives and service to Him? We simply must allow His will to be done in and through ushere on earth. Is this scary or simply inconvenient?

Even at the close of Jonah, the old man still seems self-centered and caught, not rejoicing at theNineveh revival with multitudes being saved. Maybe he caught on later...I hope so. It took me failingat human gods before I came to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Don't be a dummy like me!

Look for a better role model than Jonah in the Bible. Look to Jesus and then be sure you are doingwhat is right, because He is always right! No one will be perfect, but we can seek to become a betterChristian believer each day of our lives! Sin will haunt us, but Jesus' cross goes before us!

Let us never cease in praying for the comfort and righteousness of Christ to be withall believers! Seeking His will encourages and empowers us to be overcomers of self and Satan!

    Cordially in Jesus,Mack

    A Message From the Session

Our nation and our church face challenging times due to the corona virus pandemic and our church’stransition to new pastoral leadership. Denied the fellowship and communication opportunities wecherish as a congregation during normal times, the Session wants every member of our church toknow that the Session stands ready and willing to hear from the congregation. If you have concerns, questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact any member or members of the session to shareyour thoughts. Through the grace of God, the presence of the Holy Spirit and the love we share asmembers of Loyd Presbyterian Church, we will emerge from this unsettling era even better preparedto fulfill our role as a lighthouse beaming Christian love throughout our community.
