Off road motorcycle riding is a physical, healthy and enjoyable sport for the entire family. Off road motorcycles combine the thrill of mountain biking, snow skiing and motor sports. Dirt bikes are easy to operate and an essential form of transport for farmers. Unfortunately motorcycles are also noisy, which is the primary reason they are not favoured by many, especially those who like the peace and tranquillity we are so used to in Wanaka. A motorcycle in the hands of the wrong people can cause damage to both the operator and the environment. However modern day dirt bikes are designed to safely travel vast distances, over challenging terrain at a pace that suits any riders comfort, or adrenaline level. In an effort to develop a recreational riding area, Wanaka dirt bikers have formed the

Wanaka Off Road Motorcycle Club (WORMC). The aim is to raise funds to lease land and develop a track and trails for visiting and local off road motorcyclists of all ages and abilities. Ideally the location needs to contain the noise. The terrain should be naturally undulating to be able to form the track. The facility will include both a kids and adult level course which in time, may be able to be used to host social or advanced level events. The track is part of a long term development aimed at growing off road motorcycle participation and ensuring the sport is favourably represented and not seen as a nuisance. Welcome to 2013 and our first Crime Line for this year.The end of year celebrations went off well considering Mother Nature tried to stop them. We had 6 arrests on the 30th of December and 4 arrests on the 31st of December. All minor offences and as a surprise for us here at the Police Station and most likely you the community - they were alcohol related...

The thunder storms we have had of late have been spectacular, but as yet I have not heard of anyone entering them into the Guinness Book of Records for their length and the sound they made. Certainly shook the old station around.

This year has seen crime continue, with 11 people being arrested so far. - Including two assaults, three disorder charges and an unlawful interference with a motor vehicle charge. The worst day was Saturday the 12th of January 2013, when five people stayed at a camp ground and then left without paying.

There has been only one drink driver, which is great to hear.

The Search and Rescue team has had five callouts. All have ended well, but most should not have happened. Before you head out, plan your trip to your skill level, tell someone your intentions, and carry medical supplies and some means of communication. Sorry pigeons are not cool any more.

The Clutha River peaked at 800cumecs the other day. This is as high as most of us have seen in many a long year. Please treat it with great respect. The lake is very high and with some rain on the way it could come to town. Boaties watch out for debris in the water for a while to come, as the larger feeder rivers dump driftwood and large trees into the lakes.

We have had a number of driving complaints. Generally the Cardrona Valley and Crown Range Road area. Give yourself an extra 15-20 minutes travel time if going to Queenstown. Most complaints are for people cutting corners and driving completely on the wrong side of the road. Not a great way to end the school holidays by having a campervan stuck on the front of the Landy...

WHAT WILL THE CT SCANNER MEAN FOR DUNSTAN HOSPITAL?The installation of a CT Scanner at Dunstan Hospital has been an important part of the Dunstan Hospitals development strategy for over four years. Central Otago Health Services Ltd, the operating company of the Hospital, sees installation of a CT Scanner as an important step to underpin future development of the Hospital.From a community perspective, with the growing population of the Central & Lakes region and increasing numbers of residents over 65 years of age, it is timely that the CT imaging technology is available locally, to minimise the need to travel to Dunedin and Invercargill. This is both supportive of the Governments policy of better, sooner, more convenient and a logical outcome from the community ownership of Dunstan Hospital.From a clinical perspective, a CT Scanner is a diagnostic tool that will assist the Hospitals Medical Officers make definitive diagnoses more quickly when patients present at the Hospital with complex conditions. A CT scanner creates a three dimensional model of the patients organs, and bone structures, enabling the Doctor to effectively see into the patient to either identify what is actually ailing the patient, or to rule out conditions that could be ailing the patient. Armed with the results of a CT scan, the Medical Officers will be more sure of their diagnoses and will be able commence the most appropriate treatment faster than would be the case when CT scan results are not available.In planning for the CT Scanner at Dunstan Hospital, we are projecting that the number of scans performed on Central & Lakes residents will increase with local access to the technology. The in-land residents have not previously had the same access to CT scans as the residents of the coastal regions of Otago and Southland, and local access at Dunstan will rectify this situation. Medical opinion indicates that with local access to CT scanning at Dunstan, patients with conditions possibly requiring surgery, who until the availability of local CT scans were immediately sent on to Dunedin Public Hospital for assessment, will receive CT scans at Dunstan and only those requiring surgery will then be sent on to Dunedin. Access to CT scanning at Dunstan is likely to increase the number of patients treated at the Hos-pital, but is also likely to reduce the length of stay of the patients, as the ability to make definitive diagnoses will be significantly improved, and appropriate treatment commenced earlier.Looking to the future, we believe that having a CT scanner at Dunstan will assist us increase the services we can provide locally. CT images can be readily sent via the internet to specialists in other locations, and this should facilitate local treatment of conditions that until now required the patient to travel to the specialist. Further, with no space restrictions at the Dunstan Hospital site, there are possibilities to install ad-ditional treatment facilities at Dunstan that would both overcome space restrictions at urban hospital sites, and provide convenient local access to these facilities for the growth areas of Otago and Southland, as Dunstan develops as the medical treatment hub for the inland region.The installation of the CT Scanner at Dunstan Hospital is an exciting step in the further develop-ment of our community owned regional hospital.-Russell McGeorgeChairman, Central Otago Health Services Ltd
