President’s Report

Itismyprivilegeandpleasuretopresentthe2017AnnualReportfortheUniversityofSydney’sPhysicsFoundation.Thepast12monthshasbeenayearofgreatactivity,withthemajoreventbeingthestagingofthe39thProfessorHarryMesselInternationalScienceSchool(ISS),titled“FuturePower”.ISS2017wasagreatsuccess,withafullreportpresentedlaterinthisreport.ItwasheldinthefirsthalfofJulywith133studentsfromeightcountriesparticipating.TherewereslightlymoreboysthangirlsinthisISS,butthiswasmostlyduetotheimbalanceingenderfromsomeoftheinternationalcohort.Thetopicof“FuturePower”ishighlyrelevantatthepresenttimeandthestudentswereoverallverypositiveintheirfeedbackonthelecturesandactivities.

IwouldparticularlyliketothanktheISSDirector,DrChrisStewart,andhissupportstafffortheiroutstandingeffortsinmakingISS2017suchasuccess.ThesupportoftheFacultyofSciencewasalsoveryvaluable.

AttheGalaReceptionwewerefortunatetohaveinattendancetheHon.ArthurSinodinosAO,MinisterforScienceandInnovation.Inhisaddressthatevening,hespokeoftheimportanceoftheISSandwhyitscontinuationandongoingfinancialsupportwasvital.HeintimatedthatconsiderationwasbeinggivenatthehighestlevelsofGovernmenttosupportthiscause.

PlanninganddiscussionshavealreadybegunforISS2019.Thiswillbethe40thISSandalso50yearssincethefirstMoonlanding,sowewillbemakingtheeventtrulymemorable.However,itisanongoingchallengetoguaranteethattheISSbefundedintothefutureasalegacyofProfessorHarryMesselandhisfundamentalgoalofthepursuitofexcellenceinscience.ACommitteetodevelopastrategytosecurefundingwasformedandlettershavebeensenttothePrimeMinisterurginghisconsideration.Averysupportingarticlewaspublishedon31DecemberintheDailyTelegraphbyaseniorinfluentialjournalist.ThankyoutoPastPresidentMrAlbertWongAMforachievingthispublicityanditwouldbeexcellentifGovernmentsupportwasforthcoming.

FollowingthesuccessfulofficiallaunchofSydneyNano,wewereverypleasedtoattendtheopeningoftheDryLaboratoryinthenewbuilding,namedinhonourofMrJohnHookeCBEFTSE,whowasalong-timememberofCouncilandpastChairoftheMesselEndowmentfundraisingcommittee.SeveralmembersofCouncilattendedtheopening,whichwasledbytheVice-Chancellor.

InMay,theVice-President,ProfessorJohnMattickAOFAAFTSE,deputisedformeattheannualSchoolofPhysicsprize-givingceremony.Itisverypleasingtorewardsomanytalentedsciencestudents,acrossallundergraduateyears.TheFoundationawards20scholarshipstorecognizeexcellenceandtoencouragefurtherstudyinphysics.For2017thenumberoffemalerecipientswerelowerthanwehadhoped,aresultthatcanbeimprovedespeciallyastheISScontinuestoshowleadershipinthegenderequityanddiversityspace.TheFoundationhasbeenabletosupporttheSchoolinseveralways,withatotalof$300,000transferredin2017.

SupportwasprovidedtoourJuliusSumnerMillerFellow,DrKarlKruszelnickiAM,andtoDrChrisStewart.ThisisaverypleasingoutcomeandwegratefullyacknowledgealldonationstotheFoundationandtheMesselEndowmenttoenablethissupporttocontinue.

ItiswithgreatpleasurethattheFoundationcongratulatedMrAlbertWongAMonhisawardofanhonourinthe2017AustraliaDayOrderofAustraliaAwards.Hehasmadeoutstandingcontributionsinseveralareas,butwearedeeplyappreciativeofhislong-standingcontributiontotheCouncilofthePhysicsFoundation,particularlyforhisfouryearsasPresident(2013–2016).

ItisapersonalhonourformetohavebeenappointedasPresidentofthisdistinguishedFoundationin2017andIwouldliketoexpressmythankstoMrWong,theoutgoingPresidentforhisoutstandingservicetotheFoundationoversomanyyears.ThiswillalsobethelastyearwithProfessorTimBeddingasHeadofSchoolandDirectoroftheFoundation,andwithProfessorTrevorHambleyFAAasExecutiveDeanofScienceandUniversityOfficer.Toboth,thankyouforyourexceptionalsupportandguidance.

TheincomingHeadofSchoolisProfessorCélineBoehm,mostrecentlyatDurhamUniversityintheUK,commencesherroleinMarch2018.OnbehalfoftheCouncil,IwarmlywelcomeProfessorBoehmandlookforwardtoworkingwithhertofurthertheaimsoftheFoundation.

MythankstoalltheCouncilmembersfortheircommitmenttotheFoundationoverthispastyear,inparticulartoProfessorJohnMattickAOFAAFTSE,DeputyPresident,whohasveryablydeputisedformeonmanysignificantoccasions.ThankyoutoMsAnnaleePowellforherexcellentadministrativesupportthroughouttheyear.ToMsEveTeran,specialthanksforheroutstandingsupportoftheworkoftheFoundationuntilherdeparturemid-yearfromtheSchoolofPhysics.Wealsowelcomeandthanknewarrivals,MsClaraSpencer,SchoolManager,andMrAndrewSheldon-Collins,ExecutiveOfficer.Itiswithgreatanticipationthatwelookforwardtoanotherexcitingyearinachievingthepursuitofexcellence.

TheUniversityofSydneyPhysicsFoundation,establishedin1954byEmeritusProfessorHarryMesselACCBE,wasthefirstFoundationestablishedwithintheUniversityofSydneyandthefirstofitskindwithintheBritishCommonwealth.

TheFoundationwastosupporttheSchoolofPhysicsasavoluntaryphilanthropicassociationofindividualsandprivateorganisationsdedicatedtothepursuitofexcellenceinscienceeducation,research,trainingandcommunication.Today,theFoundationstillcarriesoutthisimportantrole.

Aims of FoundationTosupporttheSchoolofPhysicsandtogeneratephilanthropy,promotecareersandbroadenknowledgeandunderstandingofscience(inparticularphysics)inthewidercommunity.

Objectives of the Foundation• ToincreasetheresourcesoftheUniversity(by

fundraisingorbyotherwisesecuringgiftsandgrantsorbysecuringtheprovisionofservicesorothernon-financialcontributions)toassisttheSenateandtheVice-Chancellorinthepromotionofthefieldofphysics,throughtheSchoolofPhysicsand

• TocooperatewiththeSchoolofPhysics,theFacultyofScienceandtheUniversityinpromotingthesignificanceofscienceanddevelopinganunderstandingofitsimportancebothwithinAustraliaandinternationally.

Careers and achievementsTheISSnowhasover4,200alumniwithmanygoingontooutstandingcareersachievementsintheirchosenfieldsincludingscience,medicine,engineeringandtechnology.

TheEndowmentseekstoaccruefurtherfundsthroughgifts,grantsandbequeststoensuretheISScanberuninperpetuitywithdueallowanceforinflationovertheyears.

Donationsof$2andoveraretax-deductible.Pledgedgifts(donationsspreadoverathreetofiveyearperiod)arewelcomeandarealsotax-deductible.

CurrentlytheEndowmentholds$5,401,039 in funds.In2017$5,496wasdonatedtotheMesselEndowment.

ThePhysicsFoundationisappreciativeofallourdonorstotheMesselEndowment.WithoutthisvaluedsupporttheISScouldnotcontinueitsimportantworkofhonouringexcellenceinoutstandingYear11and12sciencestudentsfromAustralia,China,India,Japan,NewZealand,Singapore,Thailand,theUKandtheUSAandencouragingthemtopursuecareersinscience.

TheEndowmentseekstoaccruefurtherfundsthroughgifts,grantsandbequeststoensuretheISScanberuninperpetuitywithdueallowanceforinflationovertheyears.

The Physics Foundation supporting the School of Physics

ThePhysicsFoundationsupportstheSchoolofPhysicsinseveralways.Theseincludeadirectgrantofuntiedfunds,promotingitsachievements,fundingitsalumnipublicationsandcommunications,supportingitseventsandthroughannualscholarships,prizesandawardsvaluedatover$30,000annually.TheFoundationalsocontributesfundingtowardstheJuliusSumnerMillerFellowship,heldbyDrKarlKruzselnicki.

Alumni EngagementAlumniandcommunityengagementisaprioritywithintheUniversityofSydney.In2004theFoundationannouncedthatitwouldsupportthealumniactivitiesoftheSchoolofPhysics.

OverthepasttwelveyearsthealumniandcommunityengagementactivitiesoftheSchoolhavebenefittedfromthepromotionandmanagementofevents,andproductionofinterestingcontentforPhysicsNews(previouslyknownasAlumniNews).

TheFoundation’ssupporthasseenanincreaseinthenumberofalumninowintouchwiththeSchoolandtheFoundation,from1,000PhysicsandISSalumniin2004toacurrentlistingofmorethan5,000PhysicsandISSalumni.

TheFoundationalsosupportstheSchool’smedia,publications,eventsandfundraisingwithalltheseareaslinkingintoalumniactivitiesintermsofcommunication,connectionandhighlightingtheSchool’sachievements.

PublicationsTheFoundationpaysfortheprintingandpostageofPhysicsNews.In2016PhysicsNewswaspublishedintwoissues-SpringandAutumn.PhysicsAlumnireceivetheircopiesofPhysicsNewswiththeSydneyAlumniMagazine(SAM).

Untied FundsAswellastheaformentionedareas,theFoundationprovidesuntiedfundstoassisttheSchoolofPhysicsinareaswhereconventionalfundingisdifficulttoobtain.TheFoundationwaspleasedtobeabletotransferthefullbudgeted$300,000totheSchoolfor2017.

The39thProfessorHarryMesselinternationalscienceschool,ISS2017:FuturePower,ranfrom2to15July2017,withafocusonthechallenges,opportunities,researchandtechnologyfortheworld’senergyfuture.

Thethemeincorporatedscienceacrossabroadspectrumofdisciplines,fromfusionpowerandhigh-efficiencysolar,tosmartgrids,energymodellingandbiofuels,tomedicalphysics,astronomyandscientificethics.

Over130seniorsecondaryschoolsciencestudentsattendedISS2017,representingeverystateandterritoryinAustraliaandsevenoverseascountries.They were treated to a unique lecture series byleadingresearchers,participatedinhands-onactivitiesindisciplinesacrossscienceandengineering,andenjoyedahostofsocialevents.ThefeedbackwereceivedfromtheISSscholarsshowsthat,formanyofthem,theirtimeattheISSistransformational.TheirmessagesofthanksattesttothetruthinthetraditionalwordsofwelcometotheInternationalScienceSchool:

“The ISS will be the best two weeks of your lives.”

The ISS2017 ScholarsChosenbyourselectionpanelsacrossAustralia,studentsattendedtheISSfromeverystateandterritoryofAustralia:AustralianCapitalTerritory(2),NewSouthWales(50),NorthernTerritory(3),Queensland(11),SouthAustralia(4),Tasmania(3),Victoria(10)andWesternAustralia(6).InternationalscholarscamefromChina(9),India(5),Japan(9),NewZealand(6),Thailand(7),theUnitedKingdom(5)andtheUnitedStatesofAmerica(5).

Two Weeks of Inspiring ScienceTheISSwasformallylaunchedbyMrMarkScottAO,SecretaryoftheNSWDepartmentofEducation,attheofficialOpeningCeremonyonMonday3JulyintheUniversity’snewHarryMesselLectureTheatre.Followingtheopening,thefirstlectureonhigh-efficiencysolarcellswasdeliveredbyANU’sProf.KylieCatchpole.

Thelectureseriesfeaturedresearchersselectedfortheirareaofexpertise,scientificreputationandcommunicationprowess.ForthefirsttimeinthehistoryoftheISS,womencomprisedthemajorityofthespeakerprogram.

Outsidethelecturetheatre,thestudentstouredresearchfacilitiesacrosstheuniversity,metearly-careerscientistsatalightningmeet-and-greetevent,competedforgloryintheScience&EngineeringChallenge,learntaboutIndigenousAustralianenvironmentmanagement,receivedfivedecadesofwisdomandencouragementfromourISSAlumniPanel,andtookpartinworkshopsdesignedtochallengeandexpandtheirunderstandingofethicsandscientificleadership.

Asusual,ourgoodfriendsintheYoungScientistsofAustraliaSydneyBranchentertainedthescholarswitharichprogramofsocialeventsthroughoutthefortnight,fromtriviacompetitionstomovienights.

ThetraditionalISSGalareceptionwasheldon9JulyintheGreatHall.Thiseventisanopportunityforalumni,donors,friendsanduniversitystafftomeetthescholarsfirsthand,tocelebratethelonghistoryandtoastthefutureoftheprogram.MCfortheeveningwasAdamSpencer,radioandTVpresenter,SleekGeek,andscienceambassadorfortheUniversityofSydney,whokeptmorethan400guestsentertainedthroughoutandensuredtheeventransmoothly.

The ISS Book and Video Series WehaveproducedabooktoaccompanyeveryInternationalScienceSchool;inrecentyearsthishascontainedinterviewswiththescientistsdiscussingtheirwork,influencesandexperiences,andthoughtsonthefutureoftheirdisciplines.Allparticipantsreceivedthebookonarrival,andcopieswerepresentedtoeachlectureralso.TheISS2017bookisavailableinPDFande-bookformatsfromtheISSwebsite:

Scienceauthor,mediapersonalityandbroadcasterDrKarlKruszelnickihasfilledthepositionofFellowsinceitsinception.DrKarl’sboundlesscuriosity,eagernesstosharehissciencebrainandhispassionforPhysics(adegreein‘HowtoSolveProblems’hesays)ensuredthat2017wasayearbrimmingwithscienceengagementandaction.

In2017,newmediaopportunitiesforsciencepromotionwereharnessed,moreUniversityacademicswerebroughtintothepubliceyeonbothradioandTV,socialmediaengagementincreased,thereweremoreUniversity-basedactivitiesandcontactwithschools,technologyenabledgreaterscienceoutreach,especiallytoregionalareas,andDrKarlrealisedalifelongdream–toappearonPlayschool.Anextracomponentwasadded–personalmentoringofstudentsintothemedia.ThishasbegunwithJessicaBloomandPetrLebedevfromtheSchoolofPhysics

DrKarlcontinuedtodonatemoreofhisresearchandpersonalletterstotheRareBooksandSpecialCollectionssectionattheFisherlibrary.Continuingonfromthisrelationship,DrKarlgaveatalkforRareBites–aseriesofinformalandentertaininglunchtimetalksontreasuresheldwithintheRareBookandSpecialCollections.DrKarlspokeonthePhilosophiaeNaturalisPrincipiaMathematicabyIsaacNewton,firstedition1687.Averyrareandvaluablebook.

DrKarlgavetwopresentationsforthe39thProfessorHarryMesselInternationalScienceSchoolstudents,withautographsandselfiesdelightingthestudents!

Dr‘Physics’KarlisalwaysopentoassisttheSTEMFacultieswhenapproached.HewasaskedbytheEngineeringFacultytoassistinacoupleofprojects.KarlrecordedanintroductoryvideofortheAustralianComputingAcademytohelptrainteachersinthenewDigitalTechnologiescurriculum.HewasalsotheMCfortheZeroRoboticsprogrammingcompetition.

School Visits

Thedemandforschoolvisitscontinuestogrow,andwhiletheSkypeshelpreachmorestudents,schoolscanstillbookdatesforDrKarltalksattheUniversity.Thesetalksareheldforapproximately500studentsatatimeintheEasternAvenueLectureTheatre.

However,DrKarlhascontinuedtodoschoolvisitsoutsideoftheuniversitywherepossible.RivendellSchoolinParramattawasparticularlyrewarding,beingoneoftheonlyGovernmentdualEducation/HealthfacilitiesforadolescentsexperiencingmentalhealthissuesinNSW.DrKarlalsovisitedRandwickGirlsHighinNSW,andIndooroopillyStateHighandMullumbimbyHighinQueensland.

DrKarlalsogaveaninspirationaltalkfortheCountryEducationFoundationthatsupportsstudentswhoovercomefinancialorgeographicallimitations.OneofthegrantrecipientswasahugeDrKarlfan,currentlyundertakinghisPhDinScienceCommunication.Hewasawe-inspiredtomeetDrKarlandgainvaluableinsightsintoscienceengagement.

School Activities - Skype AneveningSkypesessionforaschool’sScienceNightduringScienceWeekwasextremelyexcitingforthestudentsandwasoneofthemanyschoolskypesthroughouttheyear.DrKarldid53schoolskypesthroughouttheyear,includingmanyregionalareasandaschoolinChristmasIsland.Thereisconstantdemandforthesesessionswithawaitlistfor2018.EverygovernmentschoolreceivesaboxofDrKarl’spersonallysignedbooksforthelibrary(withSydneyUniversitybookplate)andaone-yearsubscriptiontoNationalGeographicKidsmagazine.WebuildontheserelationshipswithschoolsandprovidethemwithmoreresourcesavailableattheUniversityincludingtheASTROintheClassroomprogram.Oneoftheyear’sobjectiveswastocreateanautomatedSkypeBookingSystemmakingtheprocessmoretimeeffectiveforboththeschoolsandDrKarl.Weachievedthisobjectiveattheendof2017andlookforwardtolaunchingthesoftwarein2018.
