Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It is in the middle of everything just hours from Prague, Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna and Warsaw. Ostrava is a developing and vibrant city taking special care to cultivate public greenery. Its industrial heritage makes for a dramatic backdrop in which to study. The campus spread throughout the historical city centre, the European architecture, cafes and restaurants provide students with a stimulating environment to contemplate the arts and sciences. It is an ideal destination for sightseeing. It is near from two mountain ranges, Beskydy and Jeseníky mountains, which provide beautiful views of the landscapes and are perfect for hiking and skiing.

Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in the Central Europe. According to the Global Peace Index, it is the 6th safest country in the world. The capital city is Prague and the currency is the Czech crown (CZK). The population is over 10,000,000 people. Culturally, the Czech Republic has a rich history in music, literature, visual arts and decorating glass and crystal.

At the University of Ostrava there are approximately 700 international students. The international students can choose from variety of subjects (www.osu.eu/22821/courses/). Language of instruction for the international students is primarily English, although limited courses are available in other European languages.

The academic year is divided into two semesters.

During the summer break, the international students can join one of our summer schools:

▪ The Czech Language Summer School is organized by the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts. It is a 21-day course of the Czech language for foreigners (4 lessons/day) with many activities and a friendly atmosphere.

▪ The University of Ostrava Summer School is an intensive 3-week programme which consists of classroom lectures, field trips and practical exercise. In 2021 it was dedicated to the topic of “Creativity and Entrepreneurship for All”.

Accommodation and Food

The Czech Republic has a low cost of living; students can manage with 450 USD/month.

Accommodation is available through the university, private dorms or by private let.

The university operated dormitory is situated near the city centre, it takes approximately 15 minutes by walk and 5 minutes by public transport to get to most university buildings. There are single, double or triple rooms.

Subsidized student meals are available for example within the Kampus Palace building in the centre of Ostrava. The meal is typically 3 - 5 USD.

Studying in the Czech language in the Czech study programs is free of charge.

The students can choose from 52 degrees and 192 double-degree bachelor programs. They can even continue in one of the 56 follow up master programs or in one of the 19 doctoral programs.

About the faculty

The Faculty of Social Studies offers social science and medico-social degrees in a range of fields and provides a platform for young researchers to launch their careers. Teaching at the Faculty is closely integrated with research, reflecting the latest developments in social sciences and keeping step with newly emerging fields.

Why study at the Faculty of Social Studies

▪ The Faculty coordinates a system of practical placements and field-based training, ensuring close links between academic studies and practical community applications.

▪ Our students work closely alongside academic staff on research projects, enabling young researchers to develop their skills and providing a platform for them to launch research-based careers.

▪ We host regular guest lecturers from our international partner universities.

▪ We offer a Social Work doctoral programme in English.

▪ The Faculty is a member of the Association of Educators in Social Work (ASVSP) and the European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW).

▪ We publish the journal ‘Czech and Slovak Social Work’, which also appears in an English version (socialniprace.cz/eng/index.php).

What to study

For the undergraduate studies the students can choose from Social Work and Health and Social Care. For the graduate studies we offer the Social Work – Social Work Specialist in the Field of Social Work Theory and Research and Health and Social Care and Rehabilitation - Interdisciplinarity and Collaboration, Integrated Health and Social Long-term Care. The Social Work is offered on the doctoral level as well with the degree subject Research for Developments in Social Work.

About the faculty

The Faculty of Education has a long tradition as a major education provider in the Ostrava region. It trains teachers for various types of schools, covering a broad range of different specialist fields and ensuring that the education system is equipped to meet the challenges of the modern era.

The Faculty cultivates close links with a network of schools and other educational institutions which enable students to gain hands-on practical experience of teaching during their studies. The partner schools are also directly involved in numerous research projects at the Faculty.

Why study at the Faculty of Education

▪ We offer a broad range of degree subjects which can be studied in various combinations.

▪ The Faculty is firmly rooted in the Ostrava region, and this is reflected in its research interests.

▪ Students play an active role in research and other creative activities at the Faculty.

▪ Students have the opportunity to do practical placements and volunteer work at various types of educational institutions.

▪ The Faculty has 106 partnership agreements with institutions abroad (including 99 Erasmus+ agreements).

▪ International students can choose from a wide range of theoretical and practical courses taught in foreign languages.

What to study

The Faculty offers mainly teacher training degrees – both as full-time studies and in combined (part-distance) form.

At Bachelor level, students can choose from a range of degrees with a focus on education (Czech language, English language, mathematics, music education, choral education, art education, ICT, civics, technical education, health education, physical education, and psychology). Other degree subjects include adult education, pedagogy, social pedagogy, teacher training for specialist subjects, teacher training for preschools, special pedagogy, training for teaching assistants, and recreology.

The Faculty also offers five-year Master’s degrees (these are ‘long’ Master’s degrees, without the need for a prior Bachelor’s degree) in teaching for primary schools, and two-year Master’s degrees (following on from a Bachelor’s degree) training future secondary-level teachers of Czech language, music education, choral education, art education, ICT, civics, technical education, health education, sport and physical education, and specialist subjects. Other two-year Master’s degrees include preschool pedagogy, special pedagogy, and social pedagogy.

FACULTY OF FINE ARTS AND MUSIC

About the faculty

The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music is the only Czech higher education institution to offer degrees in both art and music-related fields.

Music degrees at the Faculty are based on a combination of practical and theoretical courses, enabling students to test their talent in real-life professional conditions and preparing them for future careers in the music world – whether as soloists, ensemble members or orchestral players.

Art degrees at the Faculty are based around a traditional studio-based system, which offers several major advantages. Students benefit from encountering a range of different approaches to teaching, and above all from the highly individualized teaching format, which recognizes and develops the personal talents of each student. Art degrees strike a balance between technical and intellectual aspects of art, preparing students for active participation in the contemporary art world and the cultural sector.

Department of the Theory and History of Fine Arts

This department teaches theoretical courses for both music and art students at all three levels – Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral studies. Teaching focuses on current issues in art and music – including conceptual art, aesthetics, philosophy of art, art history, intermedia, tonal systems, and musicology research.

Music degrees at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music enable students to develop their skills and knowledge under the guidance of leading Czech music teachers and renowned performers. Art degrees at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music give students the space to find their own personal forms of artistic expression, gaining broad-based knowledge of all aspects of art and benefiting from the personal guidance of the Faculty’s teaching staff, who help students develop their talents to the full. The degree programme builds on the key cornerstones (art history, philosophy and ethics) to develop students’ knowledge and proficiency in traditional fine art disciplines.

About the faculty

The Faculty of Arts is one of the largest faculties at the University of Ostrava. Half of its twelve departments focus on philological disciplines (modern and classical languages and linguistics), while the remaining departments specialize in a range of social sciences and humanities – history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, art history, cultural heritage, Czech literature and literary theory. Research forms an integral part of academic life at the Faculty, which has several specialist research centres.

What to study

The Faculty of Arts offers degrees in an extensive range of subjects – philology (modern and classical languages and linguistics), philosophy, historical sciences, psychology and sociology – covering all three levels of higher education (Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees). Applicants can choose from around 80 different degree subjects or subject combinations.

Teaching is provided by staff from the Faculty’s twelve departments: the Department of Art History and Cultural Heritage; the Department of Czech Language; the Department of Czech Literature and Literary Criticism; the Department of English and American Studies; the Department of German Studies; the Department of History; the Department of Latin Language and Culture; the Department of Philosophy; the Department of Psychology; the Department of Romance Studies; the Department of Slavonic Studies; and the Department of Sociology.

FACULTY OF MEDICINE

About the faculty

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ostrava is the youngest medical faculty in the Czech Republic. The Faculty ranks among Central Europe’s most modern centres of teaching and research for both medical and non-medical fields. The Faculty of Medicine offers a broad spectrum of professional degrees taught not only in Czech, but also in English and Italian.

What to study

The core degree programme offered by the Faculty is the six-year Master’s degree in General Medicine (this ‘long’ Master’s degree does not require a prior Bachelor’s degree); this programme gives students a complete range of knowledge and practical skills that are necessary to pursue a career in medicine. Among other degrees that are taught in English belong Physiotherapy and Nursing. The Physiotherapy is taught in Italian as well.

Teaching at the Faculty focuses on developing students’ practical skill sets by incorporating practical placements into the teaching system from the very first semester. The intake of students is limited in order to enable an individual approach; practical training is organized in small groups so that students can experience individual contact with patients. It works closely with the city hospitals and a range of other medical and health care institutions across not only the region, both in public and private sectors.

INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS OF FUZZY MODELING

About the Institute

The Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling (IRAFM) is a specialist research institute at the University of Ostrava. Its focus is on theoretical and applied research forming a basis for the development of new mathematical methods for soft computing, especially in the field of fuzzy modeling. These methods are used to process imprecise information or to carry out tasks requiring a high degree of robustness. Applications include robust automatic control of complex systems, expert systems, knowledge-based systems and image processing.

The Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling is one of the few research centres in the world specializing in the field of soft computing. It combines theoretical and applied research, implementing its own research results in practical applications.

The Institute’s work has won international acclaim. Its staff have published hundreds of papers listed in the Web of Science as well as seven monographs, mainly with prestigious international publishers (Springer, Kluwer, Wiley). Our staff have given numerous invited lectures at universities in Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Poland, Russia, the USA, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand and more – as well as hundreds of presentations and plenary lectures at international conferences all around the world.

About the Institute

The European Research Institute for Social Work carries out high-quality funded research projects in the European countries of participating institutions and further afield, and produces European-funded teaching and learning materials for social work and social care programmes.

The Institute is an instigator and coordinator of high-quality research and teaching materials, which draw upon, and inform, European and wider international developments in social work and community development. The Institute makes the results of these projects available for use by universities, social workers, policymakers and managers by way of publications and the Institute’s website.

The mission of the Institute is to carry out high-quality funded research projects involving the Institute’s European partners and to produce European-funded teaching and learning materials for social work and social care programmes.

What it offers to students

International Spring School of Social Work in Europe 2018 for Master‘s and doctoral students.

The programme focuses mainly on students’ presentations based on their Master’s or doctoral dissertations, accompanied by discussions with academics, group and individual consultations. The students have the feedback from the academics and the opportunity to discuss the topics of their dissertations with experts from various countries in an informal and supportive environment. There is also an accompanying cultural programme.
