GENERAL RULES OF COMPETITION
Please Read Carefully
1. The Homecoming Committee is incorporating an overall Spirit of Homecoming Award into all of its 2013
Homecoming Activities. For more information, please refer to pages 7-10 of the Homecoming Rulebook.
2. Each participating group must have a Homecoming Liaison. This person or another representative must
attend all Homecoming Event meetings and relay information between the Homecoming Division and his
or her respective organization. Dates and times for these meetings will be posted on the website and will
be held at the Tate Student Center.
3. All rules and specifications established for each event must be followed by participating groups (refer to
the enclosed guidelines for each separate Homecoming event).
4. Each participating group must incorporate the 2013 theme, There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming, into all
competitions (i.e. banner, street painting and float).
5. All entries must be in good taste and abide by UGA policies race, color, religion, national origin, sex,
sexual orientation, age, genetic information, veteran status, or disability.
6. No alcoholic beverages are allowed during any event. Infractions will be dealt with according to University
of Georgia policy.
7. The events and competitions included in this rulebook are organized and monitored by the Homecoming
Division. The Homecoming Division holds absolute authority to disqualify any group or organization that
violates Homecoming rules and policies. (Note: Grounds for disqualification is not limited to the
regulations in this packet).
8. Any member of any group displaying conduct that is detrimental to the efforts of another group and/or
violates Homecoming or University of Georgia regulations may result in the disqualification of his/her
entire group from all Homecoming competitions. Any member of the University Community (faculty,
administration, staff or student) may make complaints to the Homecoming Division Advisor, Matt
Galewski: 102N Tate Center, 706-542-6396, [email protected].
9. Once a complaint is made, a hearing board consisting of the Homecoming Advisors and the Homecoming
Committee will be convened to consider the complaint, and their decision will be final. As questions or
complaints arise on the methods or reasons for disqualification, a meeting will take place between the
Liaison, Homecoming Division Committee, and the Homecoming Advisors.
10. All Fraternities and Sororities must abide by any IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC, and MGC guidelines.

THE SPIRIT OF HOMECOMING
Description: Throughout the entire week of Homecoming (Sunday to Friday), every UGA
registered student organization and participating spirit teams will receive Spirit
Points for participation and/or winning competitions. The overall champion of
“The Spirit of Homecoming” will be announced at half time during the
Homecoming Football Game. Student groups will compete in one of three
categories: Greek, Non-Greek registered UGA student organization, and, our
newest way to get involved, independently formed Spirit Teams (see page 9 for
details).
Date: Competition begins Sunday, November 3, 2013, with the Banner and lasts until
Friday, November 8, 2013, with the Homecoming Parade.
Place: UGA’s Campus and Athens Community
Judging: Judging of the Spirit of Homecoming Award will take place at the following
events/competitions:

Registered UGA Student Organizations and Spirit Teams will receive points for
attendance, participation, and enthusiasm. 1st -3
rd place will be awarded for best
performances and entries. For every member in attendance at a Homecoming
event, the organization/Spirit Team will receive 50 points per member. Every
event will have a spirit table where members may write their names and
respective organization. Students may only sign for one organization/team per
event. Points for placement in the top 3 for each event are measured on different
scales depending on the competition. Please view the competition specific page
of the rulebook. At the end of the week, the Homecoming committee will tally
each organization’s/team’s points to determine the winners. Note some
competitions require an additional application and/or have an earlier due date
(i.e. Lip Sync).

Spirit Teams
Description: This year, the Homecoming committee has added a new way to get involved in
Homecoming week events and activities. Along with Greek and Non-Greek
registered student organizations, there will also be a Spirit Teams category. Now
students who are not part of a student organization or who would just like to enjoy
Homecoming week with their friends may build teams of at least students to
compete in the competitions throughout the week, such as Street Paint and Lip
Sync. Spirit Teams will be competing against each other for Spirit Points, and the
overall winner will be announced at halftime during the Homecoming football
game.

Face of Homecoming Emcee
Auditions
Description: During Homecoming week, selected students will emcee each event. Auditions
will be held for this position. Students may audition individually or in pairs. Once
selected, emcees will introduce acts, make announcements, and get the crowd
excited at the events. Emcees will be selected based on student’s availability and
audition performance. Emcees will receive a free Homecoming t-shirt, free
admission to all Homecoming events, a VIP ticket for major Homecoming
Entertainment, and a Homecoming promo pack.
Application: Applications are due to Tate 102B on Friday, October 11th
by 4pm. Applicants will
also be asked to sign up for an audition time.
Date &: Auditions will be held on Monday, October 14th
at 5:30pm-7pm in Tate 144.

BANNER COMPETITION
Description: The banner competition is one great way to show off your Bulldog
Spirit! Banners representing this year’s Homecoming theme,
There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming, will be displayed in the Tate
Student Center. The name of the competing group (no acronyms)
must be visible on its submitted banner.
Due Date: Friday, October 25th by 4pm
Place: All banners must be brought to Room 102B Tate Student Center
along with their application.
Judging: Organizations will be judged according to three separate categories:
Greek (NPC, IFC, NPHC, and MGC orgs), Non-Greek UGA
registered student orgs, and Spirit Teams. All judging is based on
three criteria:
1. Connection with Homecoming Theme
2. Overall appearance
3. Originality
All participants will be awarded 50 points to be counted toward the
overall Spirit of Homecoming award. Additionally, 1st place
receives 300 points; 2nd
place receives 200 points; 3rd
place
receives 100 points.
Event Information:
1) Banners cannot exceed the size of a queen bed sheet, which is specifically
5' x 6'8" and must be of cloth material. NO EXCEPTIONS. Color of the
fabric is up to your group. We suggest using flat sheets rather than fitted
sheets.
2) If your organization would like to pick up your banner after the competition
to hang (ex: at your residence halls), please pick up your banner by
Monday, November 4th
at 4pm in Tate 102B. All other banners will be put
on display in the Tate Student Center.
3) Groups are permitted to use any materials desired in making their banner
with the exception of glitter. Glitter is not allowed on any banner.
4) Any banners not complying with the above stated rules will be disqualified.

STREET PAINTING
Description: Street painting is a spirit activity that kicks off the week of Homecoming
in order to bring different groups from across campus together for the
opening celebration of the week to come. Painting will occur along
Sanford Drive.
Application: This application is due Friday, October 25th
at 4pm to Tate 102B
Event Date: Sunday, November 3, 2013
Time: 11:59pm - 2 am (Check-in begins at 11:30pm on Sunday on the Tate Plaza
Stage)
Location: Sanford Drive (between Memorial Hall and the Tate Student Center)
Judging: Judging will take place during the event. All judging is based on three
criteria:
1. Connection with Homecoming Theme
2. Overall appearance
3. Originality
and will be conducted according to three separate categories: Greek (NPC,
IFC, NPHC, MGC orgs), Non-Greek UGA registered student orgs, and
Spirit Teams. Judges award points that count toward the overall Spirit of
Homecoming as follows: 1st place—300 points, 2nd place—200 points, 3rd
place—100 points. In addition, each individual entry receives 50
points.
General Rules:
ONLY TEMPERA PAINT IS ALLOWED. Tempera paint must be used for environmental and
clean-up reasons. All paints will have to be approved prior to painting and only those with
tempera paint will be allowed to participate.
1. Squares will be assigned on a first come basis at the check-in table.
2. Do not throw away any unused liquid paint into ANY dumpster. You will need to be sure to
take all supplies used during street painting (paint, paint brushes, etc.) with you when you
leave.
3. Organizations/teams are allowed to enter the competition with one another. Both
organizations/teams must be stated on the application. If competing together each team will be
allotted the assigned point value.
4. Judging will be based on the display of this year’s Homecoming theme: There’s No Place Like
HOMEcoming! 5. Any groups not in compliance with the above mentioned rules will be disqualified.

Video Competition
Description: Teams will make a video demonstrating their UGA spirit. They may do
this in the way they feel is most effective (music video, parody video,
etc.). The top five videos as selected by the Homecoming committee will
be posted on the Homecoming Facebook page on Monday, November
4th
. Students will “Like” the video they want to vote for. The video with
the most likes wins!
Application: Entries must be submitted to the Homecoming e-mail
([email protected]) no later than 4pm Friday, October 25th
. The subject
headline should be Homecoming Video Contest. In the body of the e-
mail applicants should provide their team name, contact name, and an e-
mail in which we can reach you.

additional 50 points will be awarded for making the Top 5.

Lip Sync Competition
Description: Teams will create and perform a lip sync routine live to a song of their choice
(approved by the Homecoming Committee) for the audience. Teams will be scored by
judges. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded Spirit Points toward their
overall Spirit of Homecoming score. Spectators will also vote for a “can” favorite
resulting in additional points awarded. At the show, fans can vote for their favorite
performances by donating canned foods. One can equals one vote. There is no limit to
the number of canned food items that can be donated.
Application: To compete in this competition, teams must fill out the Spirit of Homecoming
application, Lip Sync Application, and provide a routine write-up. All forms must be
turned in by Friday, October 11th at 4pm to Tate 102B. Up to 10 teams will be selected
to perform in the Homecoming Lip Sync show. Teams will be selected based on
application and their routine write-up. (If your team wishes to compete in any other
events, those individual forms must be turned in by their specified due dates).
Date: A MANDATORY information meeting will be held on October 17th for those selected
to participate. Once teams are chosen they will be given the time and location for the
meeting. The performance will be Thursday, November 7th
at 7pm in Tate Grand
Hall, during Homecoming Week.
Judging: Judging will be based on the following:
1. Song choice
2. Costume
3. Choreography
4. Entertainment
5. Connection with this year’s theme, There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming
Spirit Points: 1st place - 500, 2nd place - 300, 3rd place 200, Can Favorite – 150; all participants
will receive 50 points.
Rules: 1. Songs must be no longer than 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Any time past this point
will result in disqualification.
2. Choreography, costume, and song choice must be in good taste containing no
profanity or racial slurs. If any judges believe some aspect of your performance
violates this rule, or if your routine is determined to have deviated from your
original routine write-up, it may result in deduction of points or disqualification
of the team from the competition.
3. Final, approved song must be turned in to Tate 102B on a CD no later than
Thursday, October 31st at 4pm. If you fail to do so, your team will not be
considered for competition.
4. Along with the applications, each team must provide a typed write-up
with a brief description of their routine to be judged for appropriateness
and practicality. See page 20 for details. 5. All props must be provided by the individual teams. In the performance, there
will be a stage and basic stage lighting. No special lighting or tech requests will
be permitted (no use of smoke machines).
6. No more than 10 students from each team may be in the performance.

Spirit of Service
Description: During Homecoming week students are given the opportunity to give back
to the Athens community and the University we all love. The theme for
Homecoming 2013 is There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming and we are
planning to make this homecoming week the most successful. There will
be four opportunities to serve: “The Chalk-Box Project”, “Coins for the
Court,” “Surf & Serve,” and the Day of Service. Please send any questions

Event Information:
The Chalk-Box Project
Drop off anytime Monday-Friday, November 4th-8th, 2013 8:00am-4:00pm in Tate Room 102B.
This service project is a way for UGA students to promote creativity, fine arts, and fun to young
children in the Athens community! The “chalk-boxes” can be made using boxes we will provide
to you. Paint the outside of the box with bright colors and the lid with chalkboard paint. The
inside of the box can be painted or left in its original condition. Place several pieces of colored
chalk and a sponge in the box; other arts supplies should also be included. In order to inspire
creativity and fun leave a special note inside the box for a child to read, describing what is in the
box and what fun things they can do with their new art supplies.
1. Boxes can be picked up at Tate 102B Monday November 4th through Thursday
November 7th.
2. There will be a designated drop-off location for the chalk-boxes at Tate 102B.
3. If a participant is contributing a chalk-box, his or her name must be given along
with the participating organization if applicable. Please do not write your name
directly on the box, add an additional piece paper with your name and
organization inside the box.
4. Participants will be required to provide chalk paint and supplies going inside the
box for children.
5. Spirit points will be given if the name and/or organization name are legibly
written with the donation (no acronyms).
6. The chalk-boxes donated will be distributed to community youth programs.

Coins for the Court
Monday-Friday, November 4th-8th. At each Homecoming event
1. Each member of the Homecoming Court will choose a charity as the recipient of coin
donations should he or she win. Participants can donate money to a specific Court
member who will be representing their favorite charity.
2. The Court member with the most donations will donate the money raised from all Court
members to the charity of their choice.
Surf & Serve
Monday-Wednesday, November 4th-6th, 2013 11:00am-2:00pm. Tate Plaza
Service Ambassadors
1. Students can stop by tables located on Tate Plaza to participate in short, mini-service projects.
This program is designed to allow students to engage in service for a few minutes as they are
passing through Tate.
2. Surf & Serve will take place from 11:00 am until 2:00pm each day.

Students are invited to join the Service Ambassadors with their Serv(ED) project on the
afternoon of November 6, 2013. Serv(ED) programs provide the UGA student population with
service opportunities, which allow students to connect with the Athens community by identifying
and fulfilling a need for service. Students should expect to participate in a couple hours of
service that concludes with a student-run reflection.
Sign up for the project is on a first-come-first-serve basis and students will be able to sign up for
one out of several service sites. Transportation to the service sites will be provided and check in

Service Spirit Point Allocation
Three of the service events will allow organizations and teams to receive spirit points (The
Chalk-Box Project, Surf & Serve, and Day of Service). The point allocations for the service
components are as follows:
1. The Chalk-Box Project 50 points per box donation
2. Surf & Serve 25 points per service item completed
3. Day of Service 200 points per person in attendance

HOMECOMING PARADE
Description: Be a part of UGA tradition and show your spirit for Homecoming 2013 by participating in
the annual homecoming parade. We encourage you to have fun and be creative!
Date: Friday, November 8, 2013. There will be a mandatory meeting on Monday, October 14th,
6pm. Applicants will be emailed the location of the meeting once their application is turned in.
Event Time: 4:30pm (check-in); Parade begins at 6pm
Location: Downtown Athens; Corner of College Ave. & Dougherty St.
Judging: Judging is conducted based on creativity, theme and spirit in eight separate categories:
Greek (NPC, IFC, NPHC, MGC orgs) Float Non-Greek Float Spirit Team Float Greek Spirit Vehicle Non-Greek Spirit Spirit Team Spirit Vehicle
General Rules:
1. NO ALCOHOL is allowed on the float at any time. 2. Floats cannot exceed 13 ft in height and 10 ft in width. Please make sure that the length of
your float does not inhibit its ability to navigate downtown turns. 3. A float may consist of automobiles pulling non-motorized floats or motorized vehicles turned
into floats. See clarifications below for the float and spirit vehicle classifications. 4. Groups may enter either the float competition or the spirit vehicle competition, or teams may
enter both. Groups entering both competitions may have only ONE entry in each competition (one spirit vehicle and one float).
5. Floats must have identification of the sponsoring organization (no acronyms) on both sides or there will be a penalty. The organization name must be visible from 6 ft away.
6. Floats and Spirit Vehicles must represent the 2013 Homecoming theme: There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming.
7. Lights/Lighting is permitted on floats. 8. ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ALLOWED! NO ANIMALS! 9. People are allowed to ride on the floats, but please use your discretion as to what is
safe. Also, people may walk along the side of the float. 10. If your organization has a special connection to an alumni dignitary whom you would like

Clarifications:

DECORATIONS
Description: Decorate a downtown Athens business to help spread UGA pride and spirit during
Homecoming week. Decorating a business will automatically give your parade
entry (float or spirit vehicle) an extra 2 points in the parade competition and
an extra 50 spirit points.
Date: Decorations must be completed by Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11:59pm

General Guideline/Rules:
1. The business must be located in downtown Athens and on one of the streets along the
parade route. You must get permission from the business.
2. The decorations must be visible from the street outside of the business. The decorations
can be in the form of window paint, markers, paper/posters, window displays etc.
3. All decorations must be up by 11:59pm on Monday, November 4, 2013.
4. All decorations should represent UGA pride and spirit as well as the homecoming theme
of There’s No Place Like HOMEcoming.
5. All decorations must adhere to standards of good taste. No obscene or perverse slogans
or displays will be permitted.
6. Only documented partnerships with this form will be recognized and will receive extra
parade/spirit points. All forms are due Friday, October 18th at 4pm.
7. Partnerships include one parade entry per 1 business. You may decorate more than one
business but you will only receive extra points once.

Mini-Marshal Contest Application
Description: The Grand Marshal is a guest of honor in the University of Georgia’s annual
homecoming parade. A Mini-Marshal serves the purpose of allowing a child from the
Athens area to join a UGA tradition to show their UGA homecoming pride and spirit.
Date: Friday, November 8, 2013.
Time: 4:30pm (check-in); Parade begins at 6pm
Location: Downtown Athens; Corner of College Ave. & Dougherty St.
Contest: To enter the contest, you must submit a recent photo of your child, a
recommendation letter, and an expression of why they should be a Mini-Marshal in
UGA’s Homecoming Parade. The recommendation letter can be written by a parent,
teacher, babysitter, peer, relative, etc. The expression must be one of the following
done by the child: a video response of him/her talking, a written response (in your
child’s own words), or a drawing/coloring/painting (done by the child). Contest
winner will ride in a UGA-provided vehicle during Parade.
General Rules/Guidelines:
1. The Mini-Marshal must be between the ages of 2 and 7 by November 8, 2013.
2. The Mini-Marshal must be willing to participate in the entire route of the parade (route is
attached).

Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of a long-standing Homecoming tradition. Each
year the Homecoming Committee seeks to find two individuals, a King and a Queen, who
exemplify the qualities that the University of Georgia seeks to instill in all the individuals who
pass through its famous Arch. Selection of the King and Queen will occur through an
application, two rounds of interviews, and voting by the student. The following will outline the
criteria required for applicants and the material that must be submitted in order to be given full
consideration.
PLEASE NOTE: Each organization can sponsor one King and one Queen candidate for
Homecoming Court!
Each organization sponsoring a candidate who makes Homecoming Court agrees to participate in
at least three homecoming events throughout Homecoming Week. The three events will include
the Homecoming Parade, Day of Service/Chalk Box, and one event of their choice. Please ensure
that your sponsoring organization turns in the appropriate applications to participate in those
events, or your Homecoming Court candidacy will be affected.
Pre-Application Criteria:
Must be a full-time undergraduate UGA student with at least 60 hours of UGA course
credit
Minimum UGA Cumulative GPA of 3.00
Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing

Letter of endorsement from a student organization, business, or family who is sponsoring
applicant

during judging will be placed on all aspects of the application; academic success, vision for the
future, response to questions during interviews; and those who exemplify the character and
