ndThe 2 International Workshop on Dairy Science Park was held during November 18-20, 2013 at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal, acting Vice Chancellor, UAP was the Chief Guest in the opening ceremony while Mr. Zahidullah Shinwari, President, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce & Industries was the Guest of Honour. The event was sponsored by HEC; ICI Pakistan; Ghazi Brother; Romer Labs; Reon Energy Solution & Engormix.com; HEC; Livestock & Dairy Development Department; SMEDA and KPCCI.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal, Vice Chancellor, UAP welcomed the delegates and appreciated the organizers on successful arrangements. He assured of all possible support from the University. Earlier, Prof. Dr. M. Subhan Qureshi, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences, UAP highlighted the development of livestock sector, success stories on various fronts and the challenges being faced by the veterinary graduates, government departments, Universities and private investors. He thanked the Higher Education Commission for providing grant for the arrangement of the event.

The Conference was attended by more than 500 national and international delegates including Turkey and Afghanistan. 200 papers were presented in the workshop, comprising of 85 oral and 115 posters in 09 sessions. The conference was successful in convincing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry to approve a Standing Committee on Livestock and to establish a business desk at the Chamber for the first time in their history. It will facilitate graduate entrepreneurs establishment, supported by the required technical and marketing support from private sector, government departments and the University.

The University of Agriculture, Peshawar and College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Ohio State University, USA s i g n e d a M e m o r a n d u m o f Understanding on September 18, 2013. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal, Vice Chancellor, UAP and Dr. Bruce A. McPheron, Dean and Geoffery S. Chatas, Senior Vice President of Ohio State University inked the MoU. The main aim of the MoU is to establish a cooperative relationship on the basis of established contacts and mutual understandings, especially to develop and facilitate academic interchange through mutual understanding in the areas of educat ion, research and outreach. The activities envisaged in the MoU are faculty exchange and in i t iat ion of sp l i t s i te PhD programmes, joint research and extension initiatives, participation in international conferences, lectures delivering and other areas mutually agreed upon. Seminar on Zoonotic Diseases arranged

A Pak-Afghan seminar on “Zoonotic Diseases facing the livestock population in the region and their relationship with human health hazards and sufferings” organized by the Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences in collaboration with Relief International was held at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar during June 01-05, 2013.

The Seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. M. Workshop on Irrigation organized

A one day workshop on “Revision/updating and inclusion of zoonotic diseases in training curricula” was organized by the Animal Husbandry In-Service Training Institute (AHITI), Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences, University of Agriculture, Peshawar on August 28, 2013. Prof. Dr. M. Subhan Qureshi, Dean in his opening remarks highlighted the importance of livestock production in the community. He appreciated the role of AHITI in promoting the latest knowledge to the farming community and professionals.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Subhan Qureshi, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar has been awarded the Best University Teacher Award 2012 by the Higher Education Commission.

Dr. Qureshi joined UAP, in 2005 as Professor. He has been involved in teaching, research,

development and industrial linkages. He facilitated the establishment of the Livestock Trainers and Consultants and completed 05 R&D projects. Prof. Qureshi has supervised 34 PhD/M.Phil students while 18 are presently under his supervision. He has published 39 research papers in impact factor journals, 18 in HEC recognized, 09 books and 02 book chapters, in addition to about 100 popular articles. He has been working as executive member of Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council and 27 professional bodies. He is also assisting 14 journals as member editorial boards/reviewer. He is also working at Charles Sturt University, Australia as Adjunct Professor. He organized the International Workshop on Dairy Science Park -2011 as Chief Organizer.

Dr. Sahib Alam Completed Postdoc

Dr. Sahib Alam, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural Chemistry, UAP successfully completed one year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota, USA under the supervision of Prof. Wayne Thomas Shier, a well known chemist. The fellowship was sponsored by Higher Education Commission, Pakistan.

Dr. Alam worked on the preparation of corn with kernels constitutively expressing the antifungal enzymes chitinase and ß-1, 3- glucanase. He also investigated the phytotoxic and cytotoxic effects of various mycotoxins on plants as well as mammalian tissues permanent cell lines. (±)-Botryodiplodin was one of the key interest novel ribose analogue toxins, associated with charcoal rot disease of soybeans. His research produced a very valuable research tool for studying the role of the mycotoxin (±)-botryodiplodin in the fungal infection process of Macrophomina phaseolina by making it easy to detect producers of the mycotoxin.

Society of Young Agronomists (SOYA) was established on May 08, 2013 under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Zahoor A. Swati, Dean, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences and Prof. Dr. Bashir Ahmad, Chairman, Department of Agronomy, UAP. Main aim of the Society is to work for the betterment of Agronomy students, guide new entrants, arrange seminars, workshops and boost up research activities.

Dr. Zia ud Din, Assistant Professor, Department of Human Nutrition, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar has been selected as Higher Education Commission approved supervisor for PhD level students in the area of 'Health and Nutrition Sciences'. Recently, he has been granted fund (Rs.4.6 million) by Pakistan Agriculture Research Council to carry a research study on “Agricultural Productivity in relation to farmers' nutritional status of Mardan” for a period of three years.

Workshop on Center for Climate Change arranged

One day consultative workshop was conducted by the University of Agriculture, Peshawar in collaboration with Inter-Cooperation (IC) Pakistan on November 25, 2013 at UAP. The emphasis of the workshop was to develop a strategic roadmap for future activities of the Center. The participants from provincial departments and faculty attended the workshop and gave their valuable suggestions to develop and strengthen the Center as a role model in the country and build it on sustainable basis.

Mr. Mahmood Iqbal, PhD scholar, Department of Agricultural Extension Education and Communication, UAP completed six months training under the supervision of Dr. Satoshi Tachibana during 2012-13 at Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan, sponsored by Higher Education Commission, Pakistan under International Research Support Initiative Programme. During his stay, he participated in several conferences/workshops.

Training for Farmers Organized

A 3-day training on Quails Farming and Small Livestock Management was organized at the UAP during September 10-12, 2013 in collaboration with GIZ/Deewah for the farmers of FR Peshawar. The participants were trained on breeds of quail and layer for backyard production, chicken production, resistance to the environment, chick brooding management, i.e. litter, temperature, feeding, first watering, space per chick in brooding and chick guard. Thirty quails alongwith complete kit for rearing of quail farming were provided to each trainee for starting quail farming at their homes.

Mr. Matiullah Khan, Principal Scientific Officer, National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), Islamabad successfully completed his PhD from the Department of Soil & Environmental Sciences, UAP under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sharif. He worked on the enhancement of phosphorus solubilization from indigenous rock phosphate through organic materials and its effects on crops. His dissertation was evaluated by distinguished professors from USA and UK.

Field Day Organized

A Field Inspection Day in Agronomy was organized by the Society of Young Agronomists (SOYA) in the Agricultural Research Farm of the University of Agriculture, Peshawar on September 04, 2013. Mr. Saqib Bashir and Kawsar Ali, PhD Scholars of the Department of Agronomy, UAP presented field demonstration. Faculty and students of Agronomy Department participated in the event, took interest in the research work initiated by the scholars and asked questions.

Dr. Khalid Appointedas Chairman

Prof. Dr. Khalid Nawab has been appointed as Chairman, Department of Agricultural Extension Education and Communication, UAP on July 06, 2013. He did his PhD from this University during 2004. He supervised one PhD and 27 M.Sc (Hons) students in their research work.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Cooperation and Fisheries in collaboration with the University of Agriculture, Peshawar and Board of Investment & Trade organized a consultative meeting on “Trout Fish” at UAP on December 16, 2013. The objective of the meeting was to locate prospects of Trout farming and market linkages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Besides others, the meeting was attended by the Secretary Agriculture, Livestock & Cooperation, Vice Chancellor, UAP, faculty, farmers and business community.

Syed Saddam Ahmad and Mr. Waqar Ali, students of Institute of Business Management Sciences (IBMS), UAP got first pos i t ion in the “poster designing” of the Software competition jointly organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board and Department of Computer Science, University of Peshawar held on December 05, 2013 at the University of Peshawar. Shield and cash prize were distributed among the winners. Several public and private Universities participated in the event.

He worked on critical soil solution phosphorus concentration essential for plant growth in calcareous soil series. His dissertation was evaluated by distinguished professors from USA and UK.

Prof. Dr. Shahnaz Akhtar, a renowned Economist has been appointed as Director, Inst i tute of Business Management Sciences (IBMS), The University of Agriculture, Peshawar. She did her PhD in Pakistan and post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois, USA. She has published numerous research papers in national and international journals. Dr. Shahnaz has also authored two books.

The main theme of the workshop was to bring the livestock farmers, processors/exporters and public sector experts together for mutual benefit.

Mr. Gul Dad Khan, Gardens Supervisor, Department of Horticulture, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar passed away on December 31, 2013. He was born in Village Regi, Peshawar on May 28, 1967. He joined the University service in May, 1988. May Allah Almighty bless his soul with eternal peace. Amen

Prof. Jehangir Khan Khattak, former Vice Chancellor, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar passed away on September 20, 2013. He was born in Pirpiai, District Nowshera in 1937.

He was an eminent Soil Scientist, founder member and Vice President of the Soil Science Society of Pakistan. He remained Chairman, Department of Soil Science, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar for 25 years. He also served as Dean, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences. He successfully completed

more than 15 national and international research projects. He contributed substantially to the micro-nutrients research in Pakistan. He was an honest, polite and cooperative individual. May Allah Almighty bless his soul with eternal peace. Amen
