Repayments*Student loans, e.g. Tuition Fee Loan andMaintenance Loan are combined andrepayments are deducted monthly from yoursalary, normally through the tax system.

• You do not have to start makingrepayments until the April after yougraduate and you are earning over£21,000 - this means that if you startuniversity in 2015, you will not startmaking repayments until April 2019 at the earliest.

• Repayments are calculated as 9% of yoursalary over £21,000.

• If your salary falls below £21,000,repayments will stop – for example, if youtake a career break or are unemployed –the monthly repayments start again whenyou are earning above £21,000.

• The loan is written off after 30 years –the government estimate that fewer than35% of students starting in 2015 willrepay the loans in full.

• Whilst you are studying (from the start ofyour course) up until the April after yougraduate, the government will chargeinterest at Retail Price Index (RPI) plus3%. After graduation the interest rate willremain at RPI if you are earning up to£21,000, and will increase to a maximum ofRPI +3% once you are earning over £21,000.

Going to university means you may beresponsible for budgeting and managingyour money for the first time. If you havenot had to budget before, you need to setyourself spending limits and activelymanage your money.

We asked some of our current studentsabout their weekly outgoings. On averagethey spend:

• £22 Food

• £5 Clothes

• £12 Travel (weekly bus ticket)

• £20 Socialising

• £5 Gym membership

• £5 Laundry

• £5 Mobile phone credit

£74 Total (not includingaccommodation)

Most of the students also said they travelledhome every month or six weeks, so youshould take that into account when makingyour weekly budget.

We also asked them how they make theirmoney go further:

“As I live a long way from my family, Ibought a National Express student pass. It saves a great deal of money whenI need to travel home during holidays, forinstance a discount of about £20 to Truroand almost £100 off a trip to Sofia inBulgaria.”Jacob Lee, BSc (Hons) Wildlife Biology

“The one thing that has helped me makethe most of my money while at university isto go supermarket shopping with flatmates. If you shop on your own, you might not getto eat everything you buy for yourself beforeit expires, so by sharing we have cut downon wasted food.”Beatrice Lee, BA (Hons) BusinessAdministration with International Business

“The best thing I have bought is myrailcard for going home in the holidays andat least one weekend a month. This hassaved me a lot of money as you just pay £30and you get a third off most train journeysfor a whole year.”Hayley Gould, BA (Hons) Spanish andTeaching English as a Foreign Language

“I buy books from Amazon or try and getin touch with someone from the year abovewho has finished with their books whichsaves me buying brand new ones everyyear. There’s an Oxfam on Oxford Road, which has quite a lot of second hand academic books, so you could always try there too.”Daniel Hall, BA (Hons) Spanish and Italian

Budgeting for University

Many students work part-time while atuniversity to boost their income and helptowards their living costs. This is also avaluable way to gain useful work experienceto enhance your CV and prepare you for theworld of work. MMU locations have a greatnumber of shops, bars, cafes andentertainment venues where many studentsfind part-time work while they study. Weasked some of our students about work theyhave done while they study:

“To earn some money, I signed up to be auniversity Student Ambassador, which iscasual work around Open Days and otheruniversity events. This made it easy tobalance my university work and social life. I think it is a good idea if you can keep a part-time job or casual job at home aswell so that you can earn extra money inthe holidays.”Hayley Gould, BA (Hons) Spanish andTeaching English as a Foreign Language

“I only work outside of term-time whichgives me a bit of extra cash ready for thenext term. During term-time I don’t work so Ihave more time for studying and socialising.I prefer to budget my money carefully ratherthan have a job and no free time.”David Engles, BSc (Hons) Computer GamesTechnology

“I plan my week out carefully to make sureI fit everything in. For example I work onMonday and Tuesday, then I have lectureson Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I’mable to plan my hours quite easily to makesure I have enough time for studying andworking as well as socialising in theevenings.”Priyanka Vaidya, BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Health

How much might you earn?If you are studying full-time, we recommendthat you don’t work more than 15 hours perweek – you will need to find a balance sothat you have time for course commitmentsincluding lectures, seminars, reading, independent study and socialising. We payour student ambassadors £7.07 per hour towork at Open Days and in University officesgiving administrative support. If you workedthe maximum recommended time of 15hours, you could earn £92.85 per week, though remember there will be times youare busier than usual with your studies e.g.at exam time.

Student bank accountsIf you do not already have a bank account, you will need to open one in order toreceive any loans or grants to which youmight be entitled.

Most major banks offer accounts especiallyfor students, usually with interest freeoverdrafts that continue post-graduation togive you a financial buffer in case you needit. You can find useful information onstudent bank accounts atwww.moneysavingexpert.com/students/student-bank-account
