ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This report presents short-term indicators on the performance of the manufacturing industry for the

period 2004-2012. The results show the trend of production for selected commodities in regard to

quantities produced and volume indices of industrial production.

INTRODUCTION

This report presents results of the Quarterly Survey of Industrial Production for each quarter of the

calendar year for the period 2004-2012. For each selected commodity, information presented include

quantities produced and the corresponding volume indices.

Objective

The primary objective of the quarterly survey of industrial production is to provide information on

short-term development of the industrial sector. The information presented in this report will be of use

to all those interested in the country’s industrial sector including planners, decision makers and public

at large.

Scope and coverage

The survey is limited to the manufacturing industry and covers all manufacturing establishments

employing 50 persons or more. These, according to the available information, contribute about 85

percent of the total manufacturing gross output. Smaller establishments with substantial output were

also included in the survey. However, these constitute less than 10 percent of the total number of

establishments covered.

Methodology

Data collection was done four times in each reference year. The data collected were quantities

produced each month. Starting from the first quarter 1996, computation of the index has followed the

chained Laspeyre’s formula instead of the usual Laspeyre’s fixed base version so as to incorporate any

structural changes such as entries or exits of industries/commodities that may have taken place in the

sector over a specific period of time.

During the exercise, the activity/commodity list was revised and the entire series re-weighted

accordingly using 1995 information. In the exercise, the ex-factory commodity values were used as

new weights while the average quarterly commodity quantities of 1995 were used as new base year for

the production in the calculation of subsequent quarterly indices (1995 = 100). The results were then

chained with those of the previous respective annual 1995 indices (1985 = 100) by simply multiplying

the two binary indices to obtain the corresponding chained indices (1985=100).

Table 2 shows that in 2012, the volume of production in the manufacturing industry increased to 10.8

percent compared to 2.1 percent for the year 2011. This increase is attributed to the increase in food,

beverages and tobacco (16.8 percent); basic metal industries (14.6 percent); paper and paper products

(5.0 percent); pottery, china, glass and non-metallic products (7.4 percent); and fabricated metal

products/machinery and equipment (11.0 percent). However, there was a decrease in production of

textiles and leather (17.7 percent) while chemical, petroleum, and plastic products decreased by 7.9

percent.
