The
WAY!
2015– 2016 Representative Program
Welcome. From the Executive Director
Mike Womer Executive Director
One year ago the leadership team established a very ambitious plan to change the landscape of Delaware soccer merging 3 geographical regions – Middletown, Smyrna and Dover. Our intention was to provide an A+ program from both the Recreational and Representative perspective, all working in concert to deliver the best long-term player development model in the area. The club saw many accomplishments post-merger in a very short period of time, summarized below to name just a few: • The club retained and continues to grow the state’s largest and best Recreational model. Our small dedicated team of
volunteer’s manage over 3,000 REC registrations annually in 3 town based programs. These player pools ultimately feed into our centralized Representative model to sustain long-term growth of the Delaware Union system.
• We merged two Representative programs fielding over 35+ travel teams from U8 – U18 in a comparatively low cost model to other clubs. In many cases the club saw for the first time 3 to 4 teams in many of our age groups. The quality of the program has allowed us to appropriately build teams within the player pool while exploring more competitive leagues such as the Eastern Development Program (EDP) and the Atlantic Premier Soccer (APL).
• Successfully managing a total facility cost of over $150K per year in 5 locations, while working on Request for Proposals (RFPs) on a monthly basis to consistently merge and refine overall club expenses.
• The Delaware Union Soccer Club announced an agreement to become a Youth Development Affiliate (YDA) partner with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS). With this becoming Delaware’s only affiliate, and one of ten member clubs nationally recognized by the Philadelphia Union. This relationship allows for a direct path for our players and unique coaching resources from a nationally regarded youth development model.
• Delivered the concept of 3rd night training to our players to enhance the traditional experience providing focused on - Technical, Performance and Psychology based training over 8 weeks twice a year.
• Inked a deal to become a long-term anchor tenant in the 100,000 square foot expansion of Delaware Sports Complex (MTown) and in process of finalizing our participation in the $24 million Regional Sports Complex in Frederica, allowing for long-term growth of the Delaware indoor and tournament experience.
“The addition of Delaware Union Soccer Club to our youth development program continues our commitment to create one of the best youth development academies in North America,” said Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “This is another step in the Union’s long-standing philosophy to partner with like-minded high-level soccer clubs to develop the best youth players for the future.” Philadelphia Union youth academy head coach Chris Brewer echoed similar statements: “We are thrilled to add the Delaware Union Soccer Club as a Youth Development Affiliate with the Philadelphia Union,” said Brewer. “The Delaware Union Soccer Club has proven itself as one of the top organizations in the region and we will benefit tremendously through our partnership as we develop the best young players in the area.”

Technical Director of Coaching
Meet Chad Reed – Delaware Union Technical Director of Coaching Coach Reed has over 25 years experience as a player and coach in Delaware and the region. Chad has been fortunate to have played under great leadership such as Lew Atkinson (State of Delaware Director of Coaching), Joe Brown (former Professional Club Head Coach of the Carolina Dynamo), Matt Driver (former European Professional Player) and Kendal Walkes (Current Director of Soccer in the US Virgin Islands). His grass roots as a player stems back to his time as a USYSA Delaware ODP player, Delaware High School All-State Player and a 4 year collegiate career at West Chester University. Giving back to game, Coach Reed became one of the youngest men to earn an A License from the US Soccer Federation. As the former owner of the Star Soccer Academy, Reed became the largest youth soccer camp provider in Kent and Sussex County Delaware during its time. He went on to become a USYSA Olympic Development Program (ODP) Coach in Delaware, a USYSA Region 1 staff member, as well as leading teams to 7 Delaware State Championships and a Regional Semifinalist finish in two separate clubs. He holds an NSCAA Advanced Diploma, US Soccer Youth Development Diploma, and KNVB Dutch Youth Development Diploma.
