In Africa UNDP currently supports 4 wind energy projects (Eritrea, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa) at different stages of planning/ implementation. 1 project (Mauritania) has been completed.
UNDP’s approach to Wind Energy
UNDP is a co-financier of wind projects UNDP uses GEF grant money to leverage funds from
government, private sector, financial institutions In line with GEF’s approach UNDP projects aim at
removing market barriers so that wind could become a commercially viable alternative
UNDP supported wind projects focus on technical assistance including capacity building, policy and regulatory issues, awareness creation, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies and financing mechanisms
