ASIA & INDIA

ASIA ANSWERST R A V E L E X P E R T S ~ A S I A & I N D I A

More years ago than I care to acknowledge, I traveled the world as a backpacker, and spent much of my time in Asia. Not only because it was cheaper, had better street food and was warmer than other destinations, but also because of the sheer exoticness of the various cultures and the gentle friendliness of the people. Back then, Asia was not high on the wish list of most US travelers. I would send postcards from places like Chiang Mai, that people at home had to look up in an atlas. In fact, in 1984, there were less than 2.5 million foreign visitors to Thailand; twenty years later in 2014, the count was almost 27 million.

When I go to Asia now, I don’t have to stay in hostels with a communal bathroom or ride trains standing up. But what hasn’t changed are the things that delighted me as a backpacker. If anything, the food is better, the temples, stupas and palaces more accessible, the entire tourism experience richer. Partly due to my greater appreciation of history and antiquities, but mainly I think, it’s that Asia has come into its own.

I hope you go see for yourself…
