Lure Making NightSurpasses Goalsfrom Tom Keith
At our February meeting members of our chap-ter assembled over 80 bucktails to be used forour youth activities. In addition to the people
who had volunteered for the evening, we had moremembers showing up and offering to help. As a result,Terry Schar, the chapter’s Youth Director, has over 60bucktails to use as prizes for students participating inthe regional event for the State High School MuskieTournament and for the military kids attending theArmed Forces Family Fishing Celebration coming upin June. Additionally, over 20 lures were given toMike Riha, from the North Metro chapter, to use asprizes for the State High School Muskie Tournamentfinal on Lake Vermilion.
It is extremely gratifying te see how people stepup and get involved in the activities of our chapter. Iwant to thank everyone for their involvement. Thereare actually too many to thank individually, but Ineed to single out people for sharing their skills andteaching others how to assemble bucktails and makeloops on the wires. A special thanks to Don Mearsand Paul Hartman for their donation of Flashabouand blades.
Gracie and Lilly Hartman were the youngest assemblers atour February meeting and they flew through the task.
2 On the Water
Hello to all!
As winter winds down and
spring arrives, we start to antici-
pate a new soft water season. We
plan and prep, clean reels, sharp-
en hooks, pick up a few (or
many) new things that will
improve our chances when we
have a chance to get on the water.
Until then, we have some events
and projects to keep you busy.
Our Sportsman’s Banquet on
March 28 will, once again, be an
opportunity to mix and mingle
with fellow muskie enthusiasts,
to swap some “fish stories” and to
take home some new, one-of-a-
kind lures or a new rod, reel or
other equipment for the upcoming
year.
You will have a great opportunity
to book your next fishing adven-
ture at the Northwest Sportshow
March 25-29. We will have a
booth at the Sportshow, so make
sure to stop by to say “hi!” We
will also have a booth at George’s
Minnesota Muskies Expo April
10-12. If you can’t make it to the
Sportshow, please stop by to say
“hi!” at the Expo.
New fishing regulations are now
in effect including the 54” length
limit for Minnesota. There are
also new border water limits with
Canada, Wisconsin and North
Dakota, make sure you check the
regulations for updates before
you fish.
Hugh C. Becker grants have been
announced – we received three
grants for projects this year.
Thanks go to Jim Doyle, John
Newman, Tom Keith, and Terry
Sharra for their hard work on
writing and submitting the grant
proposals.
Hope to see you at one of the next
events, or on the water!

Vets Home Opener
Residents of the Minneapolis Veteran’s Home will be treated to a FishingOpener on Saturday, May 2. Our chapter annually co-sponsors this eventwith several VFW, American Legion, and AmVets Posts. A large, well-
stocked trout pond will be set up and residents of the home can come down tothe pond and spend the morning trout fishing. Volunteers help residents catchthe fish, clean them, and prepare and serve a “shore lunch” of fresh-caughttrout, potatoes and beans to the veterans.
If you don’t attend any other chapter event, this one is well worth it. It’sextremely rewarding to see our veterans who may never get the chance anyother time during the year to come out and get some fishing in.This is one of thebest volunteer events at Veterans Homes all over the country and has been recognized as such. Make plans to come out and help.
from Greg Kappes, Summer FishingLeague Chair
The chapter’s Summer FishingLeague has been reformattedfor this year to create more
interest, inspire participation and addincentive. There will be cash prizesfor the top three finishers. Payoutswill vary based on the number ofmembers fishing. If twenty peopleparticipate in the league this season, payouts would be as follows: 1st place$375, 2nd place $250, and 3rd place$125.
There will be ten league eventsscheduled, mostly Thursday eveningsfrom 5:00 until 9:30 pm and Sundaysfrom 6:00 am until 12:00. You are notrequired to fish them all but it will beadvantageous to do so.
Points are cumulative throughoutthe season. The way to get points iscatch a fish. Fish must be over 36 inches to qualify. Scoring is: a fishmeasuring 36 inches is 6 points, a 37-incher is 7 points and so on.
Fish will be measure to the near-est half inch but it must be over. So, afish measuring 42½ inches would be12½ points. Fish must be measuredon a board, verified with a picture onthe board and emailed in.
A fishing rod, donated by DHCustom Rods, will be awarded for participation in the league. Every
event you fish you will get an entryinto the drawing. If you fish all tenevents you will get ten tickets in thedrawing, if you only fish five eventsyou will get five tickets.
To qualify for the cash prizes youwill be required to make a $50 donation to the Muskies Inc. stocking program. Your donation must be madeprior to fishing a league event or yourfish caught cannot be registered. Youcan donate any time but you will beunable to register fish until yourdonation is made.
League will start with an eventon Sunday June 7. The completeschedule will be available in the Aprilnewsletter and out website. If youhave any question please email me at [email protected] or call612 750 4641.

At the February meeting Awards night severalMuskie Tales were shared. The best “tale” wasvoted on and the winner was from John “BJ”
Olson. He will keep the Muskie Tale and turn it over tonext years’ winner. Here is his tale:
During the Frank Schneider tournament last fall, Iwas fishing with my Dad on Leech Lake. We were fish-ing along the shoreline and were nearing a group ofdocks. I was in the back of the boat casting away from the boat. I don’t always see what’sgoing on up front. But, I heard my Dad shouting “I’ve got one! I’ve got one!” I reeled in asfast as I could and went to assist.
After several minutes of fighting, the thrashing “beast” was ready to come in theboat. I reached down trying to grab her with one hand. She violently turned her head andI almost got bit. This “monster” was going to need both hands.
As I finally lifted her into the boat, we realized that she was wrapped up in the line. She gently lay there as I unwrapped the line from around her. Once she was loose, it wastime to release this creature. I grabbed her with both hands and threw her into the air asfar as I could. And … she flew away.
That’s right, this “monster” was a seagull that had flown off the boat lift at the exactmoment my Dad had cast out. His line had wrapped around the bird’s wing and withgreat finesse he had reeled in the thrashing bird, we landed it, loosened her from the line, and had a successful release!
It’s easy to include yourself in a big-time Canadian fishingtrip, join an outing that has successfully taken place foryears at a base camp that just works great for muskie
hunters. For either that first Canadian trip or for an extratrip for the Canadian veteran, Red Wing Lodge on SabaskongBay, Lake of the Woods is an amazing destination. Make ithappen! Join the 2015 Muskies Inc. Red Wing Lodge Outing.Dates: August 8-15, 2015.
Last summer 25 fishermen enjoyed this trip, open tochapter members and their guests. This annual Muskie tripto Red Wing Lodge is a great choice for that first Canadiantrip or for the veteran’s extra trip. Save your surprises formuskie action, you don’t need them at base camp. Who was Hugh Becker, Anyway?
This month grants from the Hugh C. Becker Foundation are announced. Many ofyou may not be aware of the contribution Hugh Becker has made to Muskies Inc.Hugh C. Becker was born in Olivia in 1917, grew up in Minneapolis and remained
a lifelong Minnesota resident. After a stint in World War II he worked until he retired in1973 as a physical therapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.
Hugh was also a lifelong fisherman and an avid muskie angler. In 1953 he began hispersonal “fish-tagging” program, gathering considerable data on recapture. He sharedthis data with Dr. Ed Crossman of the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Oehmcke of theWisconsin DNR. The data demonstrated early on that the practices of “catch andrelease” and “selective harvest” would be valid concepts for muskie conservation.
Hugh was instrumental in the early years of Muskies Inc., serving on its Board ofDirectors for over 15 years. He ran the members-only fishing contest which became thestandard for the present day Muskies Inc. Lunge Log. Hugh was he was one of the origi-nal inductees into the Muskies Inc., Hall of Fame in 1991.
In 1976 he personally funded a three-year fish tagging program directed by theMinnesota DNR. This study was the basis for the adoption of the “catch and release”Muskies Inc. promotes, and also the adoption of utilizing the Leech Lake/Mississippistrain of muskellunge as the brood stock for the Minnesota DNR muskie program.
His fishing exploits in the United States and Canada in 66 years produced well over1,000 muskies. His love of muskies did not stop with his death in 2007. Prior to hisdeath he established the Huch C. Becker Foundation for the purposes of promotingMuskies Inc.’s tenets of Research, Fisheries, and Youth. Through the foundation, morethan $960,000, to date, has been issued in the form of grants, and will continue to beissued in perpetuity.
