Collect

O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to hear us: and grant that we, to whom thou hast given an hearty desire to pray; may, by thy mighty aid, be defended and com-forted in all dangers and adversities; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

First Reading Job 38:1, 8-11

The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: “Who

shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth from the

womb; when I made clouds its garment, and thick

darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for

it, and set bars and doors, and said, ‘Thus far shall you

come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves

be stayed.’?”

PSALM 107:23-26, 28-31

R/. O give thanks to the Lord, for his mercy endures for ever!

Some went down to the sea in ships

doing business on the great waters; they saw the deeds of the LORD,

his wondrous works in the deep. R/.

For he commanded, and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They

mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight. R/.

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress;

he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. R/.

Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.

Let them thank the LORD for his merciful love, for his wonderful works to the sons of men! R/.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:14-17

Brethren: The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh; even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 4:35-41

On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side." And leaving the crowd, they took him with them, just as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?" And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?"

On Further Reflection

“Seek peace, and pursue it.” Fr. Timothy Perkins

Earlier this week, I remembered a one-time a rally-ing cry among “traditional Anglo-catholics”—a term with which I was identified, but which was variously defined. It was a quotation of a phrase from the Let-ter of St. Jude: “Contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Be-cause it came from Holy Scripture, I initially thought it was an appropriate motto that was descriptive of what many of us were trying to accomplish. But over time, I became increasingly uncomfortable with the way it was being used. It began to seem that too many of us were fighting among ourselves and that the phrase from Scripture was being used as an ex-cuse for accepting division. We were so focused on contending that we became contentious. Instead, I began to think, we should have been increasingly attentive to “the faith” so that we might become more faithful.

The occasion that brought all of this to mind was a quarrel I saw on Facebook. It was not the first time I have witnessed people using social media to be quar-relsome. But it disturbed me because the persons involved are friends, and I really think each one of them thought he was contending for the faith!

The more I thought about this the more I came to believe that this type of contending is not the way of the Spirit. Reminded of the famous passage from the fifth chapter of the Letter to the Galatians concerning “the fruit of the Spirit,” I recalled those beautiful spiritual dispositions that are promised to the faith-ful, “love, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness.” I thought also of the contrary “desires” and “works of the flesh,” such contentious spiritual maladies as “enmity, strife, anger, dissension, party spirit.”

Surely, the faith for which we contend against all

that opposes it is the source of “the peace that passes

understanding.” After all, our Teacher proclaimed,

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be

called sons of God.” No doubt, we all have to strug-

gle, to contend to keep the faith, but should we not

do so in ways that make for peace, unity, and “the

greatest of these,” love?
