The TUA Railway - Portugal The TUA Railway is a train line in portuguese northen hinterland, connecting the town of Mirandela to the Tua station, where the Tua river meets the famous Douro river of the port wine vineyards. This line is now only 58 km long.
The only circulating units are lightweight Diesel self-propelled railcars bought in 2nd hand to Yugoslavia in the 1980’s and restored under the name of LRV (light Rail Vehicle). Bad maintenance of rails and LRV vehicles’ material caused several accidents, that profit those who want to definitely close the line to build a new dam.
The TUA line is the last of the “wild” railways in Europe, running through the river’s scenic and unspoiled valley and canyon, a difficult path through steep cliffs and gorges until the “happy end” of the river´s mouth into the Douro.
As an example of the difficult line building, in just 10 km, from Tua station upwards, 2 tessels, 1 bridge and 5 tunnels were needed to go through stone hills and deep gorges.

A Linha do Tua A linha do TUA é uma linha de Comboio de via estreita (distância entre carris = 1 m ) que actualmente está reduzida ao troço entre a cidade de Mirandela e à estação do Tua, no rio Douro, num total de 58 Km.
Estando apenas em serviço automotoras a Diesel compradas em 2ª mão à Jugoslávia, e sendo a manutenção da linha escandalosamente descurada, verificaram-se ultimamente vários acidentes, que têm servido de argumento aos que querem encerrar a linha para poder construir uma barragem.
A linha do Tua é uma das últimas linhas “selvagens” da Europa, percorrendo o vale e o pequeno Canyon do Tua muito próxima do rio, num traçado que tem tanto de difícil pelas escarpas que vence como de deslumbrante pelo magnífico desenrolar do cenário do rio, do vale, das encostas ora em socalcos ora em terríveis penhascos, até ao fim feliz que é o desaguar no rio Douro.
Em apenas 10 km, a partir da estação do Tua, foram necessários dois viadutos e uma ponte (Presas, Fragas Más e Paradela), e cinco túneis.
