New "All In" Program to Strengthen Surveying Profession's Voice

(Editor's Note - On May 4, the TSPS Board of Directors approved the following motion:The following language be placed on the 2013 TSPS Election Ballot. "WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS) recognizes that through a strong membership the Society represents the profession of land surveying in the State of Texas, and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of TSPS also recognizes that the singular organization that represents the land surveying profession at a National level is the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and WHEREAS, NSPS has offered to each State Affiliate the opportunity to participate in the "100% State Af-filiate Membership Program" at an annual cost of $40.00 per registered voting member, andWHEREAS, the Board of Directors of TSPS supports the NSPS "100% State Affiliate Membership Program,”DO YOU SUPPORT TSPS PARTICIPATION IN THE NSPS "100% STATE AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM”?YES ________. NO ___________. This is a non-binding referendum vote of support for this initiative. A vote for TSPS dues increase to facili-tate may be held at the 2013 Annual Meeting."

In the coming weeks, you'll learn more about this issue, and watch for an exhaustive piece on the initiative in the July Texas Surveyor magazine. Following is a first word on the initiative from NSPS, which sent this open letter to all state land surveying societies.)

Greetings fellow surveyors,

As you know, NSPS is currently offering a 100% “All In” membership program at a modest cost that will unify the surveying associations throughout the United States. This program will strengthen the Survey Profession’s collective voice and enhance our national influence. In order to protect the future of our profession, the survey-ing community must become pro-active and unify ourselves within an organization that represents, as near as possible, 100% of the surveying profession. The program is having considerable success but still has a ways to go. Currently, 22 State Societies have gone “all in”; expanded the membership rolls of NSPS from less than 3,000 to more than 10,000. Once the rest follow suit and sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) – membership in NSPS will grow to about 30,000. So, we invite your society to join us in this endeavor.

One of the new benefits of joint membership is a seat on the NSPS Board of Directors. Additionally, our new communications consultant, Flatdog Media, and our new legislative affairs consultant, John M. Palatiello & As-sociates, will help us increase our influence in government affairs and public relations.

We have faced many challenges in 2012, and our collective effort in addressing those challenges is the only way we will succeed. Whether it is the threat to high precision GPS users, as evidenced by the LightSquared issue; the successful repeal of an onerous and unnecessary tax on businesses that provides services to government entities; or keeping our steady hand on the future direction of our profession, it is critical that we work together. Nothing is going to happen in Surveying without leadership and that national leadership is the National Society of Professional Surveyors.

Friends, this is your opportunity to make a difference! Don’t let it slip away. It is up to us all to protect the future of surveying. We will educate the general public that surveyors are the land boundary experts and that land surveyors have always held the role of evaluating evidence, locating property boundaries, and establishing new property lines. We will enhance our influence and our focus attracting young folks into the profession. We will remind ourselves and the public just how broad the umbrella known as “Surveying” is; covering Data Man-agement, Geomatics, GPS, GIS, Geodesy, Construction Surveying, Photogrammetry, Hydrology, and all the other myriad technologies. These are the challenges before us. Please count yourself “IN” for guiding the way forward for our profession, which as we all know, is - the greatest profession in the world!

As Benjamin Franklin said, “We must all hang together or we shall most assuredly all hang separately!” and as Dave Doyle said, “We may be on the verge of seeing some significant changes in the traditional perspective of how some boundaries can be defined, along with the capability for almost anyone on the planet with a modest investment in GNSS technology to know where they are within the size of the palm of their hand. It’s an exciting time.”Thank you and best regards to you all.

Texas Firm Celebrates 35 Years of Engi-neering & Surveying Austin—On June 1, McKim & Creed, Inc., one of the largest engineering, surveying and plan-ning firms in the U.S., celebrated 35 years of providing the “most responsive and dependable service all the time.” The company has offices in Austin, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio.

The firm first specialized in structural engineer-ing, working primarily for local architects. But

over the next three decades, McKim & Creed expanded its services to include civil, mechani-cal and electrical engineering, surveying, and land planning. Market sectors shifted from heavy industrial to municipal water, wastewater and reclaimed water, transportation, energy utilities, and land development.

Today, McKim & Creed’s 400 employees work in 20 offices located throughout North Caro-lina, Florida, Virginia, Georgia, Michigan and Texas. Nationally, McKim & Creed is included among the top 500 design firms and the top 200

environmental firms in the U.S. by Engineering News-Record.

McKim & Creed established its Texas presence in 2012, and has worked with the Texas Natu-ral Resources Information System (TNRIS) to provide light detection and ranging (LiDAR) for 4,542 square miles in Ellis, Navarro, Wilson and Karnes Counties; with Hodde & Hodde Land Surveying , furnishing LiDAR, imagery and planimetric mapping in Henderson; and with the City of Missouri City providing planimetric updates.

Surveying, Texas Style

Classic video now on TSPS YouTube Channel TSPS members gathered May 4 on a perfect afternoon in Austin to invest in the future of Texas

land surveying.

This year's Ray Wisdom Auction, benefiting TSFI scholarships for Texas land surveying students, was held at Richard Moya Park in Austin following the TSPS board meeting. Just under $5,000 was collected for students studying for a career in the profession.

After a barbecue dinner, Auctioneer Dempsey Hannah led surveyors through the bidding on items donated by individuals and TSPS chapters. The auction is a highlight of the Second Quarterly Board Meeting each year, and this year's earlier date provided cool temperatures to make the pic-nic and auction even more enjoyable.

Thanks again to those individuals, businesses and chapters who donated or purchased auction items. Click TSFI for more information about TSFI and scholarships for land surveying students.
