The Trumpet From the pen of Pastor Mark... As we hunger for spring, for new life, for a true return, lets channel that hunger and thirst to paths of righteousness where God leads us. We hope in our worship and walk of faith together that we will be Spirit -led in a hunger and thirst for all to be made right not according to human ideals, but according to the Lord. So may our Lenten disciplines and our daily living be turned toward God, with a hunger and thirst for God s righteousness in the world and in our hearts. We also invite the congregation this Lent to address literal hunger and thirst as part of our faithful response to God, as we enter into a Lenten focus on offerings and support of MUST ministries for those who hunger, and for the Dig Deep Navajo Water Project for clean drinking water. May we remember in thanksgiving and in humility this Lent all that God has done for us through Christ Jesus our Lord, who loved us so much that he came down from heaven to be with us, who loved us every step of the way to the cross to die for us, and continues every day as the risen and loving Lord of our lives. The Trumpet

From the pen of Pastor Mark... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we enter into the season of Lent together, one tradition is to give up something, in order to refocus our attention upon God and away from all that might distract us from the Lord. Another more recent possibility is to add something healthy for Lent, also to bring us closer to God. But whatever we do, whether to give up or add, may what we do be to the glory of God and to draw us ever closer to our Lord.

One definition of Lent, interestingly, is “spring.” It’s true that days are beginning to lengthen, and soon new life will sprout forth. Maybe this year more than any year in recent memory is a great year to think of Lent in terms of spring, and the new life that it brings. Looking past the emotion and all the “what if’s” of fear still included daily in some media, the reality on the ground continues to be that as COVID vaccines are building, new cases are plummeting. Signs of spring are coming, even as “winter” isn’t over just yet. With wisdom and safety, and with faith and thanksgiving, let’s celebrate each sign of Lenten spring that God gives us, step by step returning to life, returning to truly living, returning to church, returning to the Lord together!

Pastor Bonnie and I, along with the Social Ministry Committee, have helped discern a theme for us this Lent. It is to “Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness.” Righteousness is not a human ideal or precept, but in contrast to our own thoughts of righteousness (which of course can naturally lead to self-righteousness), true spiritual righteousness is simply about following what is right in God’s sight. What is right in the eyes of the Lord is what we call righteousness. So may our hunger and thirst this Lent be for what is right in the sight of the Lord. As we hunger for spring, for new life, for a true return, let’s channel that hunger and thirst to paths of righteousness where God leads us.

We hope in our worship and walk of faith together that we will be Spirit-led in a hunger and thirst for all to be made right not according to human ideals, but according to the Lord. So may our Lenten disciplines and our daily living be turned toward God, with a hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness in the world and in our hearts.

May we return to Him with all our hearts as we return to church and return to life, celebrating the “spring” of Lent as we ponder all that God has done for us, and as we hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness here with us today.

The Newsletter of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

March 2021

A Message from our Church Council President: Dear Friends in Christ: I ran into Laurie and Jimmy Johnson at worship services recently, and they were celebrating that they could attend live services for the first time since last March because they have gotten vaccinated. So great to see the first robins of spring returning! We’re looking forward to seeing more and more people in person as the vaccination programs start to ramp up – too slowly for sure, but it is starting to happen! The pandemic news right now is very much focused on the existing vaccines, new vaccines, and the delivery of vaccinations. Even as new vaccines are rolling out scientists are having to test the efficacy of both new and older vaccines against the variants of COVID-19 that are popping up around the world. Just like every phase of the pandemic, we are having to work with limited or newly emerging information, and now also solving delivery logistics problems that are new to everyone. But it helps me to remember that this is a great set of problems to have because we are learning how to end the pandemic. Just three months ago we were starting to experience record high infection rates and no one was yet completely sure whether any of the vaccine trials would be successful. Now we have effective vaccines and the winter highs for infection rates are starting to drop significantly. As we are emerging from the “dark winter” that Dr. Fauci predicted and periods of chaos in our national life, sometimes it feels a bit to me like Lent was nine months long this last year. But it wasn’t, and I had my faith and prayers to remind me of that. I personally feel that the Lenten reminder of the human condition without faith is also a positive message about the power of repentance to build our faith in Christ’s promise of the resurrection. And unlike so many things in our lives that we couldn’t control this last year, the decision to repent and accept the Good News into our lives is entirely ours to make. I’ll stop there because I don’t have a license to discuss theology, but I wish you and your families a contemplative and fulfilling Lenten season. Yours in Christ,

Mark Ritter

Let Thrivent Financial Give to Holy Trinity

“Living generously” is easier for Holy Trinity’s members of Thrivent Financial. You can direct Thrivent Choice giving directly to the congregation: Holy Trinity has received over $50,000 since 2010 this way! Just log into your Thrivent Financial account, and select “Membership Overview” below the Welcome,… Then scroll down a little and you will see the Thrivent Choice section. Here you can see how much you have available to donate. This is a great way to have extra funds go to Holy Trinity without affecting your personal budget, because these funds are provided by Thrivent, but you get to choose where they go.

Thank you to those who have already directed their dollars this year. We have received $550 to date.

Your Holy Trinity Gifts There are many ways you can give to Holy Trinity. You can mail or drop off a check (there is a box in the sanctuary for drop off), you can have your bank send automatic drafts, you can give through Vanco or PayPal online (visit our website-look for the “Ways to give at Holy Trinity” box on the home page), and you can have your IRA manager mail a check directly from your account.

Navajo DigDeep Water Project now through April 4

Did you know that 1.6 million Americans do not have running water? DigDeep is a water charity that believes everyone has the right to clean running water and is working hard to provide that resource to Navajos who are off the grid. The Navajos have been deeply impacted by COVID-19, partly because of their lack of running water.

During Lent, our Holy Trinity family will again look outside our community to share our money gifts to support this charity. DigDeep uses 100% of their donations to provide running water for Navajos in New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. No donations are used for administrative costs. Their goal is to continue to ensure that Navajos in all 3 states have running water. A running water system for a Navajo home costs $3,100. If each Holy Trinity person or family commits to $2 per day during Lent, we could make a lasting donation to this project. If you would like more information, please visit digdeep.org.

Clean water is a necessity and a gift that keeps on giving. You may send your offering to the church office or place it in the offering box in the sanctuary by April 4th (Easter Sunday). Please make out checks to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and indicate “Navajo Water Project” in the memo section.

Your donations are greatly appreciated!

Let’s Keep it Clean The staff has been working diligently to tidy up the various areas of the church and education building, getting ready for more in-person events. We’ve moved furniture, taken miscellaneous items left behind to Goodwill, and are working on ways to keep things more organized and aesthetically appealing.

We want our facilities to feel welcoming & inviting. Please only bring requested items to Holy Trinity. For example, MUST and W-ELCA have marked containers in the Fellowship Hall, and when we have Ministry Stations again, those will also be clearly marked.

The deadline for the April Trumpet is Monday, March 22. Email your articles to: [email protected]

If you think you have something that the church might want, please contact Teresa. She will know if we have room or a need for your item. Thank you for helping us keep Holy Trinity a beautiful place to worship! (Teresa’s email is [email protected] and the office number is 770-971-4600).

Help Fill the HT Shopping Cart!

If you attend church in person, or if you are stopping by during the week, please bring an item or two of non-perishable food to help fill the shopping cart in the Fellowship Hall. Just a few items from each of us adds up to make a big difference in someone’s life.

Lenten Challenge for MUST Ministries Our goal is to deliver 100 pounds of food to MUST each week during Lent. While any non-perishable food is welcome, canned chicken, tuna and 2-lb. bags of rice are especially needed right now. Let’s fill the shopping cart in the Fellowship Hall every week throughout Lent!

Volunteers Needed MUST has volunteer opportunities for individuals, families and small groups that range from a one-time two-hour shift sorting food or clothing donations to weekly or monthly continuing volunteer jobs such as office administrative assistance, Marketplace stockers and cashiers, workforce development (assisting clients with resumes, interview prep and computer skills) and many more. You’ll find job descriptions and sign-ups at mustministries.org/be-help.

You can feel safe volunteering at MUST. Temperatures are checked, face masks are required (masks and gloves are provided), social distancing of at least 6 feet is enforced, and the number of people gathered in a space is restricted. Each location has a plan that best fits its environment, and each Volunteer Job Description will outline the specific details of MUST’s response to COVID-19 as it pertains to the location of the volunteer opportunity.

Lutheran Community Food Ministry at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Ways We Can Continue to Help

Since its founding in 1982, the Lutheran Community Food Ministry (LCFM) has relied upon generous donations and volunteers from the community to fulfill its mission that All are Fed. For most of those 39 years, Holy Trinity has had a volunteer team who helps out in Redeemer’s Soup Kitchen once a month. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our team has been on hold, but we are ready to return as soon as we are called. If you would like to join our team, please contact Judy Hays at 404-932-1387 or [email protected].

We at Holy Trinity can continue to support this mission by making a financial gift to Redeemer. In recognition of the LCFM’s 39th birthday, Redeemer is hoping that supporters will consider donating $39 to the LCFM. Their goal is for 100 individuals or families to participate in the 39 for 39 drive. A gift of any size is always appreciated.

How to Direct your Donation to Redeemer to the LCFM

Mail a Check: Please make out the check to The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and then write “LCFM” in the memo line. Lutheran Church of the Redeemer’s mailing address is: 731 Peachtree St NE; Atlanta, GA 30308.

Children, Adult and Family Ministry Update

Page 7

We are so thankful to be able to provide a fun project to reach out to kids and their

families. See pictured right the bags full of fun supplies to make several Valentines for

the children to share with their friends and family and some completed projects.

Our Children’s Sunday School Team delivered the bags to our Sunday School

children’s homes. We enjoyed putting this project together, and we eagerly wait for

the day we can meet in person at Sunday School. Praying these are a little something

that bring smiles and giggles to those sweet kiddos we are so longing to see and hug!

Spring is in the air! We hope you are enjoying watching as God dazzles us with the

beauty of His creation. Daffodils are blooming and birds are returning. The glory of

the Lord is evident each day, just look around and be blessed!

We continue preparing for the glorious day when we will be back to the activities and

ministries we miss so much. Our children’s classrooms are being refreshed with fun

themes by our Girl Scout Troop, their leaders and Janet Stratton. It’s an amazing gift

you have given to us!

Our focus has turned from Valentines to the season of Lent and Easter. So much

of what we normally plan is on hold right now, but we are putting together Easter

activities for the families who have children enrolled in our Sunday School program.

Read our weekly E-News for more details. If your child hasn’t attended Sunday

School but you would like for them to be included in this Easter project, please text

me (Gaye Markham) at 678-332-8095. This will be an activity that can be enjoyed by

the entire family.

Adult Ministry-Something Old and Something New Thank you to Guy Gebhardt and Bill

Hetherington for providing consistency with

our good old “Wired Word” each week. What a

great group! If you haven’t connected with

this group, give it a try. And now we have a

new virtual Bible Study on Wednesdays at

10:00 AM on Facebook and you can watch it

anytime once it has posted. It is called “Start

Your Day with Gaye”. We are currently looking

at the Book of James. The people were living

in a time of uncertainty, in many ways like our

experience today. Bring your Bible, pen and

paper and let’s look together at some

encouraging words from scripture.

Pay it BACK … Pay it DOWN… Pay it FORWARD

Total dollars pledged over three years: $645,080 Actual dollars received to date: $430,455

We are in our final year of our Capital Campaign. “Halle- - - - -”! Now would be a good time for each of us to review our pledge and plan accordingly over the balance of the year.

Please remember, all funds contributed have been, and will continue to be used in support of the following three segments of our campaign:

Pay it BACK: This segment focuses on the upgrade and repair of our Church home.

Pay it DOWN: This segment goes directly to reduce the principal of Holy Trinity’s mortgage by individuals who designate their contributions to do so, and also once a year from the Capital Campaign as a whole.

Pay it FORWARD: This segment, currently a tithe (10%) of the total contributed dollars each year, is support of our outreach to three important programs: 1) Lutheranch, 2) The Southeastern Synod & 3) Guyana Mission.

If you are a new member at Holy Trinity, or if your individual circumstances have changed, please consider supporting HT’s Capital Campaign. Should you have any questions, my email address is [email protected].

Take care, remain safe, stay well. Prayerfully Submitted,

Jim Wood, Capital Campaign Committee

Update Update

We served 55 hungry members of our community at MUST in February. Even though

the number was a lot smaller, we contributed the leftover casseroles for dinners to come. MUST is always so thankful because they don’t have as many churches or organizations helping during this hard time!

If you are interested in helping us with this ministry, here’s how:

Send in a check made out to Holy Trinity for $25.00 marked “for MUST Lunch”

Buy a large can of sliced peaches Purchase a large can of green beans Purchase cookies

Please also continue to pray for this ministry and for the hungry in our community!

Please contact Laurie Johnson at 706-325-6466 or [email protected] with any questions and/or to sign up to help.

Just in time for Easter and Spring purchases,

Scrip retail/gift cards can be ordered on Sunday, March 7th after the 10:00 AM Service. Pick up will be Sunday, March 14th, after the service.

We will be taking orders in the library (wearing masks & social distancing).

Monday School Zooms on Mondays

Our new book for the spring is written by one of our favorite authors, Max Lucado. We will be reading and studying his newest book: YOU ARE

NEVER ALONE, which was written during the pandemic. Max asks if you have these thoughts:

"When life feels depleted, does God care? I'm facing an onslaught of challenges, will God

help? When life grows dark and stormy, does God

notice? I'm facing the fear of death, will God help me?"

Again, Max says "you and I long for someone who will meet us in the midst of life's messes. We long to believe in a living, loving, miracle-working God

who won't think twice about stepping into the thorny thickets of our world and lifting us

out". Sound assuring and comforting? Join us on Mondays at 10AM as we learn, share, and grow together in our belief and trust in our God.

Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your recent philatelic donation to the Postal History Foundation. Every gift helps to maintain and sustain our growing programs: The Stamp Discovery Program, the Slusser Library and the Postal History Museum. The Stamp Discovery program allows us to open the eyes and minds of thousands of children and adults via beautiful and informative artwork on stamps. We do this through stamps, lessons, learning activities, field trips, merit badge services and more. The Slusser Memorial Library preserves and makes accessible 32,000 philatelic books, catalogs, journals, photographs, maps, ephemera, museum and archival collections.

Sincerely, Bob Davis, Chairman, The Postal History Foundation

The 11th Triennial Convention of the Women of the ELCA will now be held virtually (not live) August 3-5, 2021

Also, the Twelfth Triennial Convention and Gathering will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, during the week of September 18, 2023.

In a specially called meeting, Women of the ELCA’s executive board decided how and when to hold the organization’s convention and gathering. “Since the April board meeting, the coronavirus has spread in ways that few would have imagined,” said Linda Post Bushkofsky, churchwide executive director. As of December 23, more than 323,000 people have died in the United States due to the coronavirus, she said. More than 18.2 million people have been infected to date in the U.S. Leading epidemiologists describe the current trajectory of the virus as a “surge upon surge upon surge.” THREE RECOMMENDATIONS Therefore, believing that in-person meetings will be unsafe into 2021, the executive board approved three recommendations:

• That the Eleventh Triennial Convention, currently scheduled for August 3-5, 2021, be held virtually (or digitally) on those same dates.

• That the Just Love Gathering, currently scheduled for August 5-8, 2021, be postponed and registration refunds be offered. Staff will then find other ways to build community and bring women together virtually in 2021 and 2022.

• That the Twelfth Triennial Convention and a Gathering be held in Phoenix, Arizona, during the week of September 18, 2023.

Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your donation in support of the Center for Children & Young Adults. Your contribution will greatly help us to house, serve, and develop homeless and maltreated youth and young adults in our community.

Every child deserves a safe place to sleep, live, heal and thrive!

Regards, Kimberley Ann Borna, Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends, Thank you for being a valued member of our donor family. We are grateful for your continued support to Special Needs Cobb (formerly Right in the Community). As with many organizations, 2020 presented many new and unexpected challenges for our organization. Your financial gift made it possible for us to operate our group homes at 100% capacity and enabled much-needed continued support for our weekend Respite Home.

Since 1956, SNC has served as Cobb County’s original special needs nonprofit, providing special needs schools, camps, respite programs and group homes, just to name a few of our trailblazing projects. We changed our name from Right in the Community to more clearly express what we do, complete with a new brand, website, logo and message that better communicates our vision and vital work with special needs adults. We also began our first major renovation project with the Cobb Community Block Grant Program, providing funding for exterior enhancements to nine of our homes. Most of our 23 Group Homes are approaching 15 years in age, so these were much-needed improvements for the safety and comfort of our residents. We are excited to report that this program will continue with interior renovation in 2021.

Providing group homes for those with special needs and supportive care to Respite residents and families on a weekend basis is our mission and our privilege. We could not do this work without you! Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts. Your support helps us be Here for Them for Life.

Gratefully, Debbie Day, Executive director, Special Needs Cobb (formerly Right in the Community) Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for your generous gift to NovusWay Ministries. While this has been a challenging year for the ministry emotionally and financially, we turn our hearts toward a plan to once again welcome campers back for a safe and faith filled summer. We are well on our way to reaching our $1,800,000 Light the Fire Appeal goal by May 31, 2021, and YOU are helping make that happen!

We are doing the work to plan safe programming for children and adults, because we know they will need camp more than ever. They will need the positive relationships, vespers, campfires, hiking, climbing canoeing and crafts. They will need the safe space to learn new levels of self-reliance and independence. Counselors will need the life-changing relationships and leadership skills learned from serving as summer camp staff. The church will need these strong, passionate leaders formed by our ministry. With God’s help and the support of our strong camp community, we will meet these critical needs. Thank you for your generosity.

Sincerely in Christ, Boyd W. Harris, IV, Executive Director-CEO and Mitzie Schafer, Deacon, Vice President for Advancement NovusWay Ministries
