Charles H. Darden High School
Wilson, North Carolina
Alma Mater
We sing a song of adoration,
A song full of love and praise
For the school that is our inspiration,
For the place where we spent our high school days.
We dedicate our thoughts to thee:
Thoughts of true love and good will.
Loyal students we will always be
As we journey o'er the rugged hills.
Although from thee we must part,
This song will linger within.
Yearning and longing in our hearts,
For our Alma Mater we will sing.
We strive to do our best,
While we proudly sing thy name.
May we work, love, and be blessed!
This is our beloved refrain.
Chorus:
Dear ole Darden High!
We laud thee to the sky.
We sing thy name in reverence, praise
Darden High, Darden High, we raise
Our Alma Mater, Darden High!
Spencer J. Satchell

Dedication
"All that we send into the lives of others
Comes back into our own."--Markham
One could hardly estimate the number of individuals many of whom are still citizens of
Wilson, who have come into the light of understanding, love, inspiration, and intellectual
guidance that was shed by Mrs. Helen D. Whitted in the 45 years that she rendered service in
Wilson as a teacher.
To her, we, the Class of 1960, offer this dedication as a tribute for the contributions she
has made to our citizenry as a teacher and as a parent. Fond memories linger in the minds of
those whom she has counseled. Her name instantly invokes visualization of one of her major
assets--her artistic ability- -which she used for the benefit of so many.
May her fortitude serve as an inspiration to potential teachers that they may realize the
privilege and honor that is theirs.

"Space-tinatiorT Unknown
The calendar year is 1970. The fourth dimension has been perceived--a realm where the word
"impossible" is obsolete- -a realm where man's mental and physical powers are at a zenith- -a realm
which has been invaded by the Trojaniks that were once known as the 1960 class of Darden High School,
Wilson, North Carolina, U.S.A., Planet Earth.
Through mental telepathy in this fourth -dimensional age, here on the new planet, •'Dardenextra," the
"Trojaniks" have the power to send and receive thought messages. Reversing time is a recreational prank
performed at will. Just to prove it, we shall allow you to communicate with Dr. Hodginitrofen, called
by earth men the mad astronaut of '60, who engineered this expedition in the guise of Trojan Editor-in-
chief.
The doctor has just released a ten year time-reversal capsule! If you are alert you will see the
intricate, diligent, and fascinating preparations that preceded the launching:
It is 1960! At the Darden Testing Grounds for aeronautical majors, the space ship, "Futurosticalyx,"
stands in readiness for launching- -"Space-tination" unknown.
The blast-off is set for --0.14KC. To you that is 30 seconds. As seconds tick off, a tape recorder,
several radar scopes and a filter "Solaroid" camera are placed in the satellite. You will note on one side
a file cabinet with individual capsule sections; these capsules contain photostatic copies of treasured
memories, which, when released in space, will expand immediately and will serve as valuable records ol
1960.
We have enough equipment for all who would like to make the journey to see for themselves.
Traveling at 3,335,000 T.P.S., we can be transported in the length of time that it takes to turn a page.
At--0.28KC, we are strapped in and all stages of the rocket have been carefully checked. Come
along, enter the "Futurosticalyx," and LET'S TRAVEL THROUGH SPACE WITH THE TROJANS, 1960
style.

The Board of Trustees
G. H. Adams, Chairmanof the Board F. T. Green
J. W. Benson
The Futurosticalyx, like many others, has three stages, but is
unique in that each stage is capable of carrying passengers and
has its own return guidance control.
In the first stage, between the ignition chamber and the oxy-
gen storage compartments, will journey our Board of Trustees,
which this year has just elected a new "superinstronomer" and
"secretaryx," Mr. G. S. Willard.
Upon reaching the perogee of the earth's atmosphere this
guidance control with its aerodynamic stability will automatic-
ally return this stage in order that its occupants may continue
their vital job- -making available opportunities and materials for
succeeding superstructures. Mrs. C. A. King
G. C. Vick, Jr.R. E. Kirkland, Jr.
Administration and Faculty
The construction of the satellite is accomplished by highly advanced scientific processes executed
with the greatest patience and understanding. In the second stage with our administrators and faculty are
stored our radar scopes, maps, guides, and tape recordings of the courses they have charted. This stage
will propel the rocket to the limit of the atmosphere, projecting it with its sustaining equipment into
space; then like the first stage, it must return its passengers to the earth where they will resume their
duties as project supervisors and directors- of research and construction.

Pleasant joiirney stop
your worM"Happy Landings stop Store these challenges in your rocket "How do you, tackle
How do you tackle your work each day?Are you scared of the job you find?
Do you grapple the task that comes your wayWith a confident, easy mind?
Do you stand right up to the work aheadOr fearfully pause to view it?
Do you start to toil with a sense of dreadOr feel that you're going to do it?
You can do as much as you think you can,
But you'll never accomplish more;If you're afraid of yourself, young man,
There's little for you in store.
For failure comes from the inside first,
It's there if we only knew it,
And you can win, though you face the worst,If you feel that you're going to do it.
Success! It's found in the soul of you,And not in the realm of luck.
The world will furnish the work to do,But you must provide the pluck.
You can do whatever you think you can,It's all in the way you view it.
It's all in the start that you make, young man:You must feel that you're going to do it.
How do you tackle your work each day? With confidence clear, or dread?
What to yourself do you stop and sayWhen a new task lies ahead?
What is the thought that is in your mind?Is fear ever running through it?
If so, just tackle the next you findBy thinking you're going to do it.
BON VOYAGEThe Faculty
Trojanik Staff
Finally the third stage of "Futurosticalyx" is assembled and equipped, the lower
chamber housing the "Trojaniks" Staff, a hard-working crew selected to set up a base
on any planet reached. They have made doubly sure that each senior with his space
apparatus, his capsules of home-training, religious affiliations, talents, guidance, in-
tellectual training, aspirations, fondest memories, and solar batteries, is braced in the
instrument -packed chassis of the plastic midget moon equipped for the launching and
for stability in "space-tination" unknown.
This rep"^sents the final preparation for the boost into space and kicks off the
"Futurosticalyx" at the necessary orbital speed. Let's journey with the "Trojaniks! "
"Futurosticalyx" will be transporting, each in its own capsule, memories of many potential scholars and
friends. We shall expect them to appear in the Space Age in various capacities:
(1) founders of Space Fashions, Inc. (Home Economics I—Mrs. J. B. Harris, Instructor^
(2) samplers of miniature food capsules for astronauts (Home Economics II—Mrs. J. B. Harris, Instructor),
14
15
(5) operators of orbital electronic computers and calculators (Trigonometry--Mr. J. W. Jones, Instructor)

"Will the meeting please come to order." These familiar words are heard at our meetings on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at the activity period.
The Student Council is the governing body and spokesman for the student body. Following are some of our
aims and objectives: (1) encourage the practice of good citizenship, (2) promote the common good, (3) promot
better understanding between students and faculty, (4) interest students in school affairs, (5) provide a training
ground for both students and followers. Officers for the council are chosen in the spring. Representatives are cht
from each homeroom class. Mrs. M. B. Chambers is our advisor.
Plans are being made for many activities which we hope will materialize.
Cooperation from the faculty and student body is a vital factor in the success of the Student Council.

Class History
A sunny morning in September, 1956, marked the beginning of a long struggle here at Darden. Our ambitions
were high, and we were as eager as beavers.
Because of the large number of us, we were divided into 'six groups with the following advisors: Mrs. Hunt,
Miss Sullivan, Mr. Brown, Mr. Elliott, Miss Morgan, and Mrs. Hagans. Each division had its own class officers.
As green freshmen, we participated in many activities, namely: mathematics club, dramatics, band, glee
club, patrol force, student council, and the intramural basketball tournament. For outstanding scholastic achieve-
ments, Mary E. Wheeler won the citizenship award and Betty Norfleet the general science award. Donald Jones,
Charles Murphy, James Rountree, and William Joyner were stars on the football team.
Our first year ended with joyful anticipation for the life of wise sophomores.
September, 1957--"Mighty Sophomores"! (that is what we called ourselves.) Advisers: Mrs. Mims, Mrs..
Harris, Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Chambers. The same system prevailed for class officers, as prevailed in our freshman
year. We really began our second year hitting hard everywhere. The hard hitting paid off: 10-3, with Mrs. Har-
ris, advisor, and Betty Norfleet as president, was honored to have Mary E. Wheeler as Miss Senior Homecoming,
her attendant, Joan Pender; and Annie Woodard, Miss Friendship Queen.
Our activities were principally the same as those of our first year. In the spring of that year, Marian Carter
and Margaret Sanders were candidates for Vice-President of the Student Council. Margaret Sanders was the stu-
dents' choice.
The "intellects" this year were Boisey Barnes, who won the algebra award, Charlotte Rhice, the biology award,
and Margaret Sanders, the glee club award.
We happily trekked back to Darden September 3;1958, as dignified juniors. This year Brenda Hines was Miss
Senior Homecoming. Several of us were qualified for the Crown and Scepter Club. Barbara Foster) Peggy Williams,
Barbara Evans, Willie Reid, Mary Wheeler, Margaret Sanders, Betty Norfleet, Boisey Barnes, Jerome Hodges, Marian
Carter, Louise Coe and Amie Haskins were the fortunate ones.
Under the supervision of the following class officers: President, Charles Murphy, Vice-President, Walter Green-
field, Secretary, Margaret Sanders, Assistant Secretary, Marian Carter, Treasurer, Louise Coe, along with the follow-
ing advisors: Mrs. Harris, Mr. Dixon and Mrs. Ray, we planned for the greatest social event of the year, The Junior-
Senior Prom. Our theme was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." All the preparations and co-operation caused this
affair to be most successful.
Outstanding achievements resulted in me following: Margaret Sanders, the Dramatics award, Annie McPhail,
the Home Economics II award, and Mary Wheeler, the United States History award and the Junior Scholastic ability
award. Peggy Williams and Mary Wheeler were marshals for the senior class.
Representing us in football and basketball were Charles Murphy, Donald Jones, Walter Greenfield, Claude
Barnes, Harry Hoskins , William Joyner, Jerry Williams, Boisey Barnes, James Rountree.
At last we reached that long awaited year, when we became sophisticated seniors. Our first event of note was
the Homecoming parade, the theme of the parade was "America on Parade." Margaret Sanders was Miss Senior
Homecoming, her attendants, Delores Nicholson. We had a beautiful flag made by our classmates, which expressed
the theme of the event.
Jo Ann Barnes and Joan Pender were fortunate to become members of the Crown and Scepter Club.
Students from our school representing us in sports on the Eastern All-Star Game held on A. & T.'s Campus,
Greensboro, North Carolina were Harry Hoskins, defensive captain, Claude Barnes, and William Joyner.
Our major activities this year were the publication of our yearbook, "The Trojan," the Senior Class Play en-
titled "The Charm Shop," a romantic drama in three acts, and the Senior Banquet.
Class officers were Betty Norfleet, president; Richard Mitchell, vice-president; Frances Little, secretary; Annie
McPhail, assistant secretary; Etheleen Tabron, treasurer; James White, sergeant-at-arms; and Margaret Sanders,
parliamentarian. Advisers: Mrs. E. P. James, Mrs. M. H. Miller and Mrs. M. B. Chambers.

Last Will and Testament
We, the space bound Trojaniks, in preparing for our journey into that unknown realm, make public our last will
and testament. During our interesting and profitable years here on earth, we have collected many valuable treas-
ures, both tangible and intangible. To us they are nuggets of gold which will enlighten our path as we travel
through the galaxy. So upon leaving, we are going to bestow some of them on our school, the faculty and our
friends, in hopes that they will serve as guideposts in the future for such journeys as our anticipated one. We hopethat these small tokens will express our gratitude.
Article I
To our devoted parents we leave this thought:"Upon the parents everywhere,
May heavens blessings fall
Unending shall be our gratitude
As we, their love recall."
Article II
To our alma mater, we bequeath our gratitude and deepest affection for all the golden opportunities she has givenus during our years here. We each have gathered what we have sown and tilled.
Article III
To our principal, Mr. E. M. Bames, and faculty we leave the succeeding classes to be embued with the thoughts,
ideals, knowledge, precepts and inspiring guidance which they so unselfishly gave to us.
Article IVOn behalf of the Senior Class we leave to the best and most profound thinkers our Senior Advisers, our sincereaffection and deepest appreciation. For they have dealt on all subjects pertaining to our moral and intellectual
life which will enable us to become good citizens. Thought upon thought, precept upon precept, we havematured in our thinking, and developed our powers of doing and creating.
"Because their hands have guided us
When the path we did not knowAnd patiently they pointed out,
The safest way to go,"
We say . . . "Thank you."
Article VThe student Council becomes the recipient of the courage and fortitude to continue in their wise judgments andcounseling as they lead the student body to greater and nobler heights.
Article VIWe bestow our Seniority and the precedent, which has been ours for the past year, upon the Junior Class. With this
bequeath go our fondest wishes for an enlightening and exciting senior year.
Article VIITo the Sophomore Class we leave our "get up and go," our eagerness to progress, and our profound willingness to
undertake any task prescribed for us.
Article VIIIWe leave the football and basketball teams the shoes of former stars confident that they will adequately fill them.
Article IXBecause of the greatest demand for intellect the world has known, to the Crown and Scepter Club we leave morestudents who are aiming for scholastic heights.
Article XWe gratefully acknowledge the service rendered by the Mixed Chorus and the Band. The melodious strains bywhich we have been so royally entertained will long be remembered. We leave with you the flats in hopes that
they will become sharps in the near future.
Article XIWith thoughts toward the ideals which encompass such an organization, we leave to the Patrol Force high hopes for
continued orderliness and fair play.
Article XIITo the Cheering Squad we leave our strong vocal chords, and spirit of fair play.
Article XIII
To the Dramatics Club we leave this saying, "Have Stage--will Act."
We do hereby declare this our Last Will and Testament, on the 31st day of May, nineteen-hundred and sixty.

Willie Reid, testator
