9 October 2014 The Triple Filter Test In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaint- ance met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?" "Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "Well, no," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and…" "All right," said Socrates. "So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now, let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?" "Umm, no, on the contrary…" "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about my friend, but you’re not cer- tain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left—the filter of Useful- ness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?" "No, not really." "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?" Dear Parents, Welcome back to Term 4. We have a short gallop to the finish line in 9 weeks. As part of NRL promotion and awareness, Jim Stevens, the Darling Downs Representa- tive will be offering NRL Skills to the children every Friday for the next four weeks. He started the sessions today (he had another engagement come up for tomorrow) hence the text message to parents for the children to wear their sports uniform today. Congratulations to Angela, Chris and Eve Skillington on the safe arrival of Matilda Ivy Rose Skillington on 30/09/14 weighing in at just over 8 pounds.

The Triple Filter Test In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaint-

ance met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"

"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be good

idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test.

The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"Well, no," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and…"

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now, let’s try the second filter,

the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"Umm, no, on the contrary…"

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about my friend, but you’re not cer-

tain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left—the filter of Useful-

ness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor even

useful, why tell it to me at all?"

Dear Parents, Welcome back to Term 4. We have a short gallop to the finish line in 9 weeks. As

part of NRL promotion and awareness, Jim Stevens, the Darling Downs Representa-

tive will be offering NRL Skills to the children every Friday for the next four weeks. He

started the sessions today (he had another engagement come up for tomorrow)

hence the text message to parents for the children to wear their sports uniform today.

Congratulations to Angela, Chris and Eve Skillington on the safe arrival of Matilda

Ivy Rose Skillington on 30/09/14 weighing in at just over 8 pounds.

Tuckshop Roster:

October 10th— G Auger & K Willett October 17th— C Peardon & A Marks Uniforms

Term 4 will be back to normal with the uniform shop opening on Tuesday mornings at 8.30. I have been investigating the idea of changing the fabric of the polo shirts both boys and sports to a material that lasts longer and doesn’t fade. I am pleased to say I have found a company and this will go ahead as soon as the old stock is sold. The same supplier will also be making the girls formal blouse. If you would like to look at the samples feel free to come and see me on Tuesday morning. We also have a different sup-plier for the sports socks so any stock we have is reduced to $5/pair.

Bull Sale Fundraiser

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped run such a smooth Sausage Sizzle at the Bull Sale during the holidays. A special thanks to all the past students who helped on the day. All efforts were greatly appreciated and an amount of approximately $1000 was raised for the P & F funds.

If you would like to nominate another parent or yourself for a position on the P & F executive, please complete the attached form and send it in an envelope to the school addressed to the P&F President by Monday, 10/11/14.

Clifton Race Day Chip Van Roster Saturday 25th October This year the P&F are very fortunate to be given the opportunity to run a chip van at the Clif-

ton Races. We anticipate this will be an excellent fundraiser for the school. The P & F are

looking for parents or older siblings to come and help. Shifts are only for 2 hours, this is a

small amount of time in return for an excellent chance to raise funds for our school. Please

circle which time slot would suit and fill in name and contact details. Please return to the

school by 17th October.

Many Thanks .Chip Van Co-ordinator Susan Smith. 0439 963128

THE REFURBISHED TOILET BLOCK Our toilet block was gutted and then refurbished over the September School Holidays. No mean feat in just 14 days!! I congratulate Mr Rowan Ruhle on the outstanding workmanship and attention to detail completed in the refurbishment under his management. Thank you for a job well done Rowan !! The new toilet block is modern, clean and smells a whole lot better than it used to! I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mrs Kerry McCarthy for her great job in applying for and successfully gaining a grant of $35 000 from the Gambling Fund which was used towards funding the refurbishment, with the rest of the funding coming from the School DDF Fund.

Below, the new girls’ toilets. The ba-sins have been ordered and still have to be fitted.

Above, our new look toilets and below, the boys’ new urinal

To the right, the new hand-dryers. These modern dryers caused the most excitement with the children. - a new toy for some!! We are expected to save a great deal on paper towels.
