Lent calls us to "struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor." And it is a struggle! Like our Lord Jesus tempted by the devil in the wilderness, we too are constantly tempted and assaulted by sin, death, despair, and the devil. Lent allows us to admit the truth about our daily struggles, and to let the living God be our help and salvation. This year Lent begins on February 14, Valentine's Day! What a strange reminder that God's love comes to us through the Cross, meeting us in our sin and need, calling us to follow him through the Cross to the joy of Easter. So what will your "discipline of Lent" be this year, to help you in your struggle? It is not easy, but together we will repent, fast, pray and do works of love. And we will find ourselves met and strengthened by the living Jesus Christ who died for us on the Cross, and who rose again on Easter so that we might have Life everlasting Join us for solemn Ash Wednesday worship, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. Ashes will be available at the church doors in the morning and at Union Station during the afternoon on Ash Wednesday. For those who would like to attend a mid-day service, we will be sharing in a 12:15 pm service at Emanuel Lutheran on Humphrey St. Lenten Vespers (a 20 minute service of Evening Prayer) will be held each Thursday in Lent at 7:00 p.m., beginning February 15. Lenten Devotionals and Self-Denial Folders will be available in the back of the church to help you keep a holy Lent. Our Bible Studies continue each week during Lent. If it's been a while since your Bible has been opened, come and read the Word together Sunday morning at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and/or Thursday at 6:15 p.m. Serve others this Lent by collecting items for Lutheran World Relief Personal Care kits. Each Sunday in Lent we'll focus on a different item (soap, combs, washcloths, etc.) and assemble them in time for Easter. Join us each Sunday for worship at 10:15, where together we receive his love in Word and Sacrament God grant us all a holy Lent, and so an even more joyful Easter. Operation Christmas Child

Declare his glory among all the nations, his wonder among all peoples. Psalm 96:3 2018 is the 25th anniversary of Operation Christmas Child. The ministry began in 1993. Trinity became involved with OCC in 1994 and the rest is history.

Imagine 25 years of blessing needy children around the globe with a simple shoebox gift and a gospel opportunity. Some of the children who have been blessed went on to be disciples themselves sharing their story of how much that simple shoebox gift impacted them. Trinity was lucky enough to have two of them share their journey with us. We can help make this anniversary special by packing even more shoeboxes. Why not, I’m for 25 more. A few years ago we used to feature an item of the month in an effort to collect shoebox items. Let’s try it again. Since we missed January this will be a double month. Hats and gloves, and accessories such as headbands, necklaces, and sun glasses. As always all donations are welcome. The drop off box is waiting in the narthex for all donations. Also accepting any standard size shoeboxes. BlessingsBarbara Mourer OCC Chair and Relay Coordinator

Seafarers International House Dear Friends of Seafarers. Wow, has it been cold at the port! The wind blows and the harbor ices over but the work of loading and unloading continues. The seafarers who work on the deck are dressed in heavy coveralls. hats, gloves and face masks so that you can only see the slits of their eyes. I stand on the deck shivering as the deck watch signs me in and then I am escorted up to the mess room where it is warm with heat (but not comfort) and offered a hot cup of coffee sweet with milk and a lot of sugar. We joke about the weather especially with the Filipino seafarers as many of them have never experienced this kind of cold before. One crew had to spend hours out on the deck chopping ice in order to be able to open the hatches. Another, sailing here from Spain spent 12 days “rocking and rolling” all the way here. I noticed that chairs and anything that could move had been tied, chained or locked down. I had a call early one morning from the captain of a ship asking me if I could take him to the grocery store to get some provisions and by the way, the ship was probably going to sail around 1600 as there was not much more cargo to unload. I knew that a grocery store was probably not the place to go for the quantity of food needed to feed 20 seafarers 3 meals a day. After looking at the grocery list from the cook, I knew that we needed to head over to the food terminal at Long Wharf. Here is just some of what we bought: 100 lbs cabbage, 10 lbs scallions, 40 lbs bananas, 60 lbs red delicious apples, 4 lg boxes tomatoes, 40 lbs onions, 30 lbs garlic, 40 lbs eggplant, 10 lbs cucumber, 1 lg box lettuce, 40 lbs green beans, 3 boxes tofu, 40 lbs oranges. We loaded the van 3 times and got everything

over to the gangway. I kept telling the captain that I was so happy to see that he was providing such a good healthy diet for his crew. So often I see meals that are so full of fats, piles of rice and not a vegetable, salad or fruit in sight. Meals never seem to be eaten leisurely but fast, fast, fast and done. Getting the fruit and vegetables was the easy part because now the captain wanted to buy a large quantity of frozen fish. How hard could that be I thought. The terminal gave me the name of a company in West Haven that they were sure could help us out but no luck, they did not sell to the general public. So, we then went to a fish market in Hamden, they recommended we go to a fish distributor in Branford. Arriving there I noticed a sign on the locked door that said that they did not sell to the general public as of 12/15/17. As we were walking back to the car a man came out and called to us asking what we were looking for. He was anxious to talk with the captain when he learned about his ship in New Haven. He explained that laws and regulations had recently changed and buyers now needed accounts, certificates and documents to buy the fish (who knew!) and he recommended that we go to the Resturant Depot in Orange. Wow, what a place that was, but we soon found out that you had to have a membership to buy which required tax numbers and certificates, etc., etc., etc. So now what, the captain was beginning to get nervous as he needed to get back to the ship to prepare final paper work needed before departure. We decided that we would go back to the fish market in Hamden where he purchased 40 lbs of frozen mahi mahi, the only thing they had frozen. The captain said that we had tried our best and that he would try to arrange for a delivery of fish when he got to the next port. He was

very happy with the quality and quantity of food we were able to purchase and he was very happy and thankful for the help he had been given. We parted with a prayer and the hope that some day they would return again to New Haven, hopefully when it was warmer. Wishing you all the joys and blessings of the New Year. Ruth Setaro, Chaplain

“BRINGING HOPE TO CHILDREN IN INDIA” “Doing Good” is not easy!

Lately we are feeling it – on both sides.” Information fatigue” has set in. Don’t worry: money for the kiddies gets send like clockwork – we have yet to miss a payment!

At this time 6 years ago we started talking with a lawyer about setting up a non-profit in Connecticut. Yes, “doing good” starts with a lawyer, with forms, fees and a bank account. And let not forget the 30 page form that the IRS wanted to have filled out. Whatever hurdle we had to overcome – the Indian side had 10 times more barriers to overcome. Over time fewer emails are coming and going from and to India, less interaction between the Indian non-profit (C Action) and our non-profit (Reach Dalit). “Doing good” and sustaining it – nobody said it would be easy.

However … Today we have a marvelous outcome: Our kids received some recognition in their school. The very kids who were not supposed to even go to school! A big THANK YOU goes to some marvelous teachers and caretakers who work miracles in the background so our kiddies can succeed.

A big THANK YOU goes to all the people on ‘this’ side who make all the work in India possible!

Onward!
