  • Summer is well underway, but we still have a lot of exciting events going on at the Church. For example, the First Lutheran Church has invited us to join them for their Monday evening golf league this summer. Several of our parishioners have played and report how much fun they had. We have also invited the Luther-ans to join us for our Movie Night to return the favor.

Speaking of our interaction with First Lutheran, a few have asked me why we are doing so much with them. The easy answer is because they in-vited us to. But it is a little more than that: the Episcopal Church is in full communion with the Lutheran Church. Which means that I can serve in their church and Pastor Ian can serve in ours. Additionally, it has been a bless-ing to combine and share some of the activities and services with them. For instance, this is our second year for having Vacation Bible School with them and for two years we have com-bined (with other churches) for the Easter Vigil services. The main bene-fit is that these examples when done together, offer a bigger and better event than if done separately. And we have made great friends along the

way. So, we will keep looking for opportunities to serve God to-gether in the fu-ture. Pastor Ian has always been very ecumenical.

The follow-up question is: “Why are we not doing more with our sister church Good Shepherd?” We are cer-tainly willing to work together with our fellow Episcopalians and have done so in the past. Good Shepherd is in-volved with the Vacation Bible School and had been invited to participate in the Easter Vigil. Mother Marjorie and I have spoken about additional oppor-tunities, but she feels that they have several programs going on in their church and wish to concentrate on them at this time. Other new and exciting oppor-tunities here at Trinity include our new evening activities. We have added a prayer bead service at 6:00 pm on Tuesday evenings followed by an evening Bible/Book Study at 6:30. These were added for those parish-ioners and guests that cannot partici-pate in these activities during the day

“Thank you to all of our wonderful helpers!!”

because of work or other schedule con-flicts. We have started a Saturday Evening Eucharist Service we are calling our “Rite 3” service. It is really a Rite 2 service that offers some contemporary music such as selections from the Pe-terkin songbook and the Lift Every Voice and Sing song book and others. The atmosphere is a little more casual and we hope to bring some new families to our church. But keep in mind all are welcome! We even have a baptism scheduled for this service on June 30!

Continuing our 175th celebration, please make plans to attend our “Her-itage Dinner” on October 12. The Bishop

will join us for the dinner and then will be with us on Sunday to celebrate our ser-vices. The church is looking to cover the cost of the hotel ballroom and entertain-ment. We are expecting to keep the ticket cost for dinner to about $26 per plate. As you can see, we have a lot of exciting things happening here. Please come and be a part of what God is doing at Trinity, and as always, bring a friend.

God bless you one and all,Father Paul

  • Trinity’s Day with the Fire Department

A Facebook post from our Senior Warden Becky Mathis-Stump:

Thanks to Trinity Episcopal Church and the Parkersburg Fire Department, I spent my morning helping local homeowners receive smoke alarms. While it's WAY outside my com-fort zone to knock on the door of a stranger's house at 10 am and chat with them, if I hadn't participated, I would have missed: (1) the opportunity to encounter gracious men and women who will sleep easier tonight knowing they and their families have an extra layer of fire protection; (2) the excitement of boys and girls who wanted to see the fire truck and talk to the firemen; and (3) the childlike enthusiasm of adults (myself included) who were able to ride a fire truck. Sometimes, being out of a comfort zone has a really cool return.

  • A COLORFUL LOOK AT TRINITY’S PAST

    by Paul Miller

What do St. Stephen, George Washington, and R. A. Gibson, Trinity’s fifth rector, have in common?

Robert Atkinson Gibson was born in Petersburg, Virginia  in July 1846 to Churchill Gibson, an Episcopal clergyman. Gibson attend Hampden–Syd-ney College, but interrupted his studies at age 18 to volunteer with Vir-ginia's First Rockbridge Artillery, not returning to Hampton–Sydney until af-ter the surrender at Appomattox in 1865. After graduation, Gibson enrolled at the Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained deacon on 24 July 1870 by Bishop Francis Whittle of Virginia. As deacon, Gibson worked to revive parishes in southeastern Virginia. On 4 July 1871, Bishop John Johns of Virginia ordained him to the priesthood, after which Gibson served as assistant to the Rev. Joshua Peterkin (father of our first bishop) at St. James Episcopal Church in Richmond. The Rev. Mr. Gibson arrived in Parkersburg to become the fifth rector of Trinity in October 1878 while the parish was in the process of constructing our current church building. While here, Gibson helped supervise the con-struction of Trinity Hall (formally opened in October 1881), the Bishop’s Residence, and a Chapel at Tavennerville. After nine years at Trinity, Gibson accepted a position as rector of Christ Church in Cincinnati, Ohio and continued until 1897, when his native dio-cese called him back to assist Bishop Whittle as Bishop Coadjutor, being consecrated on November 3, 1897. Upon the death of Bishop Whittle in 1902, Gibson became the sixth bishop of Virginia.

St. Stephen on far left. Bishop Gibson on Washington’s right

Bishop Gibson is most remembered as seeking to repossess, restore, and reopen many colonial churches which had fallen into ruin. He also built many churches and chapels in the Blue Ridge. In addition, most of Vir-ginia's black parishes were founded during his episcopate. As part of his duties, In June 1918, Bishop Gibson consecrated the newly constructed Grace Episcopal Church in the Plains, Virginia.

So, back to our original question: What do St. Stephen, George Washing-ton, and R. A. Gibson, Trinity’s fifth rector, have in common?

In thanksgiving for his ministry, the people of Grace Church in 1920 in-cluded the recently deceased Bishop Gibson, St. Stephen, George Washington, and seven others (all with halos!) in their Te Deum stained-glass window above the altar. A more complete story (and picture) of the window can be found here: https://www.gracetheplains.org. Look under “Welcome.”

  • Our July topic will be the new Saturday service and how it’s responsive to our desire to reach younger families (as was revealed on the survey) and how all the parish can help.
