The Trinity Times
Dear Friends Well, China was even more exciting than I expected.
What an incredible mixture of ancient and modern.
We arrived in Beijing to an incredibly huge and busy
airport, where we were found by our tour guides.
From that point on, we no longer carried luggage, and
our every comfort was considered. I would
recommend a Smithsonian tour to anywhere!
We had both a Smithsonian guide, Bob, who is a PhD
professor at George Washington University, and a
Chinese guide, Mike. Mike is an amazing “fixer,”
who ensured that we were first in line for every event
or place, had friends everywhere we went, and gave us
an incomparable insight into present day China. In
addition, we had an additional local guide in each city
we visited, who shared their own life stories about this
rapidly changing society.
There were just too many incredible sights to
enumerate here—Tien Amin Square, the Forbidden
City, the amazing cruise down the Yahtzee through
gorges that challenge the Grand Canyon for splendor,
the very chic and modern atmosphere of Shanghai.
Everyday brought more and more jaw-dropping sights
and experiences.
Traffic, especially in Beijing, was terrifying—buses,
rickshaws, bicycles, tractor trailers, pedestrians, all
moving fast, fast, fast, with no acknowledgement of
traffic signals. Our own bus often took U-turns in the
middle of the speedways, rather than go around a
block. Mike explained there is no real law
enforcement for traffic, because if the police tried to
stop a vehicle, the whole city would become
deadlocked! Wild!
Food was also an adventure—I was wise to take a
whole carton of protein bars. Many of our traveling
companions enjoyed the food tremendously. Let’s just
say I would not return to China for the cuisine.
One last laugh—Mike made sure that we had the
opportunity to visit Walmart in each city if we
desired—to him, this is the sign that China is really a
first-world power!

Church Ladies’ Events
YWCA SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13
12:30 PM TO 3PM.
We’ll bring food to share for lunch and hear from
Dawn Linn, the CEO. She will be speaking on the
Y’s mission to serve and empower women in our
community through Wise Options, a safe haven for
victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and
violent crime, and Liberty House, a transitional
home for homeless women and children. After that,
we are invited to SHOP! The YWCA is home to
The Boutique where gently used items are sold to
help support the programs offered. If you’d like to
come early, The Boutique opens at 10am. Good
food, good company, and a good cause…plus,
shopping!
FALL FOLIAGE TRAIN EXCURSION
We’re still hammering out the details for this one,
but on October 27 and 28th the Chamber of
Commerce offers leaf peeping train excursions
starting at Maynard Street and travelling to and
from either Jersey Shore or Muncy depending on
the time (either noon for Muncy or 3pm for JS).
Wouldn’t it be fun to get enough people (guys and
gals!) to reserve our own car? We’ll be polling
everyone to determine date and time that suits the
majority. The cost is $15 per person.
These events are initiated by Trinity
Williamsport. Let’s join in! Sign up now, and we’ll get back to you with details.

God of all seasons, we thank you for Autumn. We thank you for the touch of coolness in the air that gives us a new burst of energy, for the coloring of trees that shows the creativity of the Divine Artist, for the falling leaves that reveal the strength of the branches, for the hues of fields that bring peace to our souls, for the smiles on pumpkins that bring joy to children, for the fall harvest which that brings us gratitude for the bounty of our land, for this change of seasons that reveals the circle of life. God of all seasons, as you transform the earth, transform us by your Spirit. Amen.
