Despite it’s Florida location, Titan America’s Pennsuco cement plant

had a serious problem with snowmen. The labour and expense of

hydroblasting them out – as well as long-term repair costs – called for

a more efficient solution. FLSmidth and Titan worked together on a

design – centered around the first ABC cooler inlet on the U.S. market

– that allowed for quick installation and short downtime. Today, Titan

has completely eliminated snowman formation and overall operational

efficiency has significantly increased.

years, the cement industry has witnessed some turbulent times. Economic recession has overlapped with a clamp down on emissions in some places and political discord in others. For some companies, one or other of these has been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. The

question frequently asked among conference-goers is ‘Will we ever see the likes of 2005/2006 again?’ The answer I most often hear is ‘No; those days are gone’, but is that really true?

Look back 15 years or so to the Asian Financial Crisis. Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia were all badly affected by the recession that

these countries have come. The Asian Financial Crisis was a stumbling block – a lengthy speed bump, if you will, on a continued path to growth.

[Turn to page 22] for Paul Maxwell-Cook’s summary of

global cement industry activity over the last year.

Cemex is to invest around US$100 million in Egypt, enhancing its operations in the country and supporting infrastructure development. Part of the investment will go towards increasing the Assiut cement plant’s capacity to use coal and petcoke as energy sources, with the aim of eliminating fuel subsidies by 2014. New waste co-processing and environmental equipment will also be installed at the plant in order to lower emissions and increase the use of alternative fuels.

The cement producer, which already has plans to support four major concrete paving projects in the country this year, will invest in equipment for the construction and promotion of concrete roads. Cemex also hopes to further develop its affordable housing initiatives.

The investment plans were discussed in a meeting between Sergio Menendez, President of Cemex in Egypt, and Yehia Hamed, Egyptian Minister of Investment.

Cemex has also announced plans to increase the production capacity of its Odessa cement plant, Texas, by 345 000 t to almost 900 000 tpa. The expansion plans are a response to growing cement demand in West Texas, principally from the oil and gas industry. More efficient extraction technologies in these industries have boosted demand for specialty cement products used in well construction.

The expansion project will include a higher capacity load out system, which will improve the efficiency of the truck loading process and help to meet the increased demand. State-of-the-art production technology will result in greater fuel efficiency and enhanced productivity.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Cemex has signed an agreement with Decarbon to introduce funded energy saving solutions that will lower operational costs and minimise its impact on the environment.

SITA UK has begun producing Climafuel at its new facility at Landor Street, Birmingham. The £7 million SRF facility took in its first batch of waste in March 2013. Equipment at the site is currently undergoing testing but once the plant becomes fully operational it will process 22 tph of waste. Climafuel is an alternative to coal, and is used at Cemex’s Rugby cement plant. The facility makes use of commercial waste that would otherwise go to landfill.

The waste is sifted and shredded at the site, and metals, plastics and paper are removed for recycling. Materials that could harm the cement manufacture process, such as those with high water or chlorine content, are also removed. The high calorific value of the resulting Climafuel, mean that it is well suited to fuelling the cement kiln at the Rugby plant. During production, infrared technology continually

analyses the SRF to ensure it meets the standards expected by Cemex. Material that does not fulfil the requirements can be used as RDF elsewhere.

There are plans to establish another Climafuel facility at Malpass Farm, next to the Rugby cement plant. This is scheduled to begin operations at the end of 2014. The two sites will produce a total of 250 000 tpa of Climafuel.

“We have been successfully burning Climafuel at Rugby since 2007 and during that time we have been steadily increasing the proportion we use,” said Ian Southcott, Cemex. “At the moment, we source Climafuel from a number of plants around the UK and to be able to secure supplies locally genuinely provides a local solution to the local problem of how best to utilise the waste that the community generates.”

Consistent-quality cement without wasting a watt.

Imagine a 30 percent reduction in the energy consumed by conveyors, crushers, mills, fans and pumps used throughout your cement plant. ABB’s ACS 2000 medium voltage variable speed drive could be the answer. For motor-driven applications, the general-purpose drive replaces traditional throttling or damping devices saving energy, lowering emissions, reducing maintenance costs and improving process performance. The drive is extremely easy to install and commission and can be operated without an input isolation transformer with line voltages from 4.0 to 6.9 kV, saving capital cost and floor space. [USA] IEEE-IAS/PCA Conference success in Disney World

The IEEE-IAS/PCA Conference in Disney World, Florida, was a great success. A total of 916 delegates were in attendance from some 25 countries to listen to 45 excellent papers and visit the 166 exhibiting companies.

Cement Industry Committee (CIC) Chair, Ted Richardson, opened proceedings with a reminder of the IEEE’s motto: Advancing technology for humanity. Mark Mueller, the conference’s Local Chair, then stepped up to the podium to encourage delegates to make the most of this opportunity to learn something from the way Disney is operated, “because you can be sure your competitors will”. Jeff Nagel, CIC Vice Chair, introduced the conference programme, which commenced with the State of the Industry Address. David Zwicke stepped in for Ed Sullivan this year, and presented a positive forecast for the US industry, minus a specific timeline of when we can hope to see that

positivity beginning. He talked about willingness vs ability: the ability to spend is there, but the willingness has not yet returned. Mr Zwicke was followed by Imran Akram, who presented a global state of the industry summary and forecast, giving delegates a good overall picture for comparison.

The technical sessions – outlined more fully in World Cement’s IEEE-IAS/PCA Conference supplement, which is available online for subscribers to download at www.worldcement.com – commenced with a paper by Rick Bohan and John Kline, looking at their study

throughout the remainder of the morning ranged from recycling bypass dust to mercury abatement, before the concurrent afternoon sessions began. Here, the papers examined safety, maintenance, power, automation, analysis and fuels, while a panel on waste heat recovery gave delegates the opportunity to directly compare three different WHR systems. The high quality content continued on the second day of the conference, where a highlight was the panel discussion: ‘Preparing for the training bubble’. This received such an overwhelming response in the Q&A portion of the session that it was suggested a follow-up might be necessary for next year’s conference. Other topics for the day were NESHAP, SCR,

as well as another panel discussion, this time on HPGR technology for clinker grinding. Attendance throughout all these papers was excellent, even with the concurrent programme.

Outside of the technical part of the conference, the exhibition ran from Sunday to Tuesday and several companies held hospitality events in the evenings. On Wednesday night, to close the conference, an awards banquet was held at Epcot® World ShowPlace. Awards were given to the top three papers, as follows:

First place – Greg M. Kemper, William S, Vilcheck and David B. Durocher for ‘The Journey of an Enterprise in a Process Industry Toward Improved Electrical Workplace Safety’.

IntroductionSome analysts suggest that global cement demand from now to 2017 will grow by less than 5% while others forecast 5 – 6%, and at least one optimist

the growth rate this year should show an improvement on 2012, albeit a slight one. World cement demand may well break the 4 billion t mark, or certainly come close to it, by the end of 2013. IHS predicts that the growth rate of the world economy will hold steady at 2.6% this year. The stage will be set for a modest acceleration of growth towards the end of this year and during 2014. However, we are living in a time of what has been called “extreme uncertainty” related to the Eurozone debt crisis, China’s growth, and instability in the Middle East and Africa. The question on all our

minds is, will that uncertainty diminish by this time next year?

AfricaThe operating margins of major cement players in Egypt were impacted by political instability and the withdrawal of energy subsidies throughout 2012. In April of this year, the Ministry of Petroleum dealt another blow to the industry when it announced a reduction in the supply of natural gas to cement plants starting from June to September. Inevitably, this will lead to increases in cement

Market research reports seem to agree that there will be real growth for the construction industry in Morocco,

After stagnating in 2012, the cement industry in Turkey is expected to grow this year. Cement demand will be boosted by large infrastructure contracts including highways and power plant projects. The country exports about 20% of total cement production, but this is expected to decline as the importing countries expand their own cement facilities.
