"Held in Jembrana, West Bali, Makepung is a fascinating festival where the finest buffaloes

compete in an annual circuit race."

Dance, art, culture, spiritual trance, chicken fight, you

think you’ve seen and know it all. In fact, Bali has so much more to offer in term of festivity, such as Makepung buffalo race. Derived from the base word of kepung, meaning ‘chase’, similar to the expression ‘steeplechase’, Makepung is one of the unique traditions stemmed from the agrarian life scene of the island, and is a widely enjoyed event in the regency of Jembrana, West Bali.

Makepung is basically a major grand prix held around July to November in which hundreds of pairs of buffaloes are teamed up together

with their jockeys riding the traditional wooden ploughs that are slightly modified for the competition.

These buffaloes-called ‘kerbau pepadu’, compete in various open race circuits in assorted heats around the district of Melaya, leading up to the finals, officially entitled the Governor Cup. On the race day, the bovines will also compete to gain the ‘best-dressed’ awards, creating another fascinating sight for the spectators as all buffaloes are dressed up fashionably with various ornaments from horn to horn. The races itself will last for five hours, with the buffaloes divided into three racing divisions.

Just as Bali, Lombok is also blessed with abundance of natural wonders. One of them you should visit is Sindang Gila waterfall. Located just south of Senaru village at the area of Mount Rinjani National Park, it is actually a part of twin waterfalls along with Tiu Kelep.

The locals believe that the water flowing through these two waterfalls can enhance the skin of those who bathe themselves in it and make them look considerably younger.

Legend said that this area once used by the nymphs to bath themselves whenever they descend down from heaven. Whether it true or false, there is no hurt to plunge and refresh yourself in the crystal clear water beneath this waterfall and gain benefit from its natural enchantment. More believable version said that this waterfall was found by a brave man while he was chasing a mad lion after it ransacking a nearby village, thus where the name ‘Sindang Gila’ derived from.

Commonly known as one of the best places to stay during a vacation

in Bali, Nusa Dua is a suitable area to rest and relax. The name of ‘Nusa Dua’ actually implies to more than one occasion; it can refer to the entire eastern side of the Bukit Peninsula at the southern tip of Bali, or the purpose-built, safe and rather sterile tourist enclave that rest on

the eastern side of this said peninsula (named Bali Tourism Development Corporation or BTDC in English).Established around 1970, BTDC Nusa Dua was designed to compete with international beach resorts over the world, embracing the roots of Balinese 'culture,' in form of attenuated dances and other traditional art-based performances. The area itself

is a vast and manufactured gated compounds housing five-star resorts and lavish villas, surrounded by precisely maintained greenery. Despite the elite environs and strict security, BTDC area is actually a welcoming place for everyone. As it also built near the shoreline and have plenty of beaches open to visit for

recreational purpose. The beaches of BTDC are some of the nicest to visit, with pristine white-sand; blue ocean and tropical trees to soak in and relax away from the bustling area of the island center parts. On an edge of this peninsula, lies an area called water blow, which literally a place where one

can view amazing natural attraction of sea water splashing between narrow coral hills. It has become one of the main destinations in BTDC, to gaze upon the vista or just sit on the wooden pavilion and enjoy the atmosphere of serenity.

Just a little bit outside BTDC, those who wish to do water-based activity can visit Tanjung Benoa. It is a peninsula area of Nusa Dua similar to BTDC lined with aquatic excitement facilities and family-friendly resort hotels-most of midrange caliber. By day, the water off the Tanjung Benoa shoreline

Bali is all about living in harmony and in Nusa Dua area you can see one prove of that statement in form of Puja

Mandala Worship Complex. Here, places of worship from five major religions in Indonesia are built side by side; namely Ibnu Baitullah Mosque, Maria Bunda Segala Catholic Church, Budhina Guna Buddhist Temple, Bukit Doa Protestant Church, and Jagat Natha Hindu Temple. You can really feel the pleasant vibrant of tolerance at Puja Mandala, as the place of worship used regularly for every religious occasion, often at the same time. It is not uncommon to see people of different believes giving hand to each other out during big festive religious celebration, from helping out the event preparation to safeguarding the place during the event.

FIRE has to offer."

Featuring a vibrant interior dining space with eloquent

All elegance aside, grills and meat is the main charm of FIRE, so a recommended to-try menu here is the steaks. If you’re not sure of which to order, they recently feature a sharing plate menu which consist three kinds of steak of your choice, served in a steel pan along with baby tomato, potatoes, chips, mushroom and grilled vegetables which act as both condiment and garnish to enhance the presentation. " As a photographer, Adi Wiratmo is no stranger to award and acknowledgement. The Sumbawa-born lads use his vibrant imagination to capture raw, captivating images for the viewers."

Being in the industry professionally for over

12 years, Adi knew what he wanted to become, and strived himself to make his dream come true. For him, photograph represents art itself in the fullest. He didn’t waste much time tinkering pictures in editing process, instead rallying on his refined skill of capturing the raw image.

Let’s take a look of the photo which grants him the first place at Tropical Life Photo Contest, for example. Not only did Adi successfully capture the majestic atmosphere of Bromo crater, but also framed it so well it looks like a painted brush palette instead of real-time taken scenery. The composition and tone speak for itself, creating a memorable, stunning imagery in its stillness.

According to Balinese Hindu believe, Mount Batur is a sacred

Although now lies dormant and welcomes visitor who wish to walk along its trail, Mount Batur is used to be an active volcano, and last erupted about a centuries ago, claiming live of thousands citizens around its vicinity along with hundreds of temples and villages. I t’s not that hard to view Petitenget area of Seminyak as one of the most stylish and highly developed tourism

destination in the island. But fancy cafe and lavish resorts aside, the area still has some of the most important remnants that revert back to the time where Bali is considered as a place of pilgrimage, a distant paradise where its people live and breathe deeply on spiritual Hindu culture. One of those said remnants can be seen in form of Pura Petitenget.

"As a part of significant shrines that has reshaped Bali’s spiritual scene in glorious ancient era, Pura Petitenget is one of the important remnants left in upscale area of Seminyak."

upsCale reMnants

A part of numerous sea temples that spiritually guard the island’s perimeters, Pura Petitenget was initiated by the legendary Hindu priest Danghyang Nirartha on his historical mission from neighbouring island Java in the 16th century. Red bricks and sandstone formed most of the temple’s architecture, giving it an antique, classy feel.

Pura Petitenget is also widely renowned for its festive anniversary celebrations which held every 210-day on Balinese ancient calendar. Upcoming dates of this said festival will be on 26 October in 2016, so mark your calendar if you’re up for some culture-induced activities to blend with the locals.

In the old ages of kings and kingdom, Bali is one of those islands with

rich historical background, reverting to some of the most honorable rulers in the country in their pilgrimage of exploration and discovery. Pura Blanjong is a sacred temple linked to one of Bali’s most glorious ruler; Sri Kesari Warmadewa.

Built around the 16th century, Pura Blanjong was built as a monument to honor Sri Kesari Warmadewa and his journey to the East. The king is said to be the descendant of legendary Syailendra dynasty which rules over Java and responsible for world renowned architectural wonder called Borobudur temple. According to the inscription dated 914 A.D. found inside Pura Blanjong, Sri Kesari was a Buddhist apostle who soon established a Mahayana convent at Blanjong village. This inscription also wrote some of the oldest history of Bali Island.

Instead of common brick material, Pura Blanjong was constructed with coral as its main component, thus makes it slightly distinctive from other ancient temples in Bali. The Ganesha statue founded in the center area shows obviously which deities are being worshipped in this wonderful sanctuary.

BASIC TREKKING ESSENTIALS

Everybody (should) love the nature, and do nature-based activities at least once in their lifetime. One of them provides a real challenge is mountain trekking. Here we list some of the basic tips for you who wish to go trekking to ‘conquer’ some of

the Bali’s highest peak. Have a pleasant adventure!

WARM UP!Trekking is all about long walks, and the best way to prepare for a long walk? Do long walk. Preferably starting small and building up slowly to the actual length of the trip. Also work more on your leg. Sports such as soccer squash, swimming and

cycling helps a lot to get your leg muscle ready for some action.

GEAR UP!Pack light, but be ready for anything. Wear the best quality of cloth you could find, and also for footwear, never underestimate the terrain. Invest in a good-quality set of hiking boots, preferably with good water resistance and plenty of

support and ventilation.

TEAM UP!Friends can be really helpful at times, especially during a nature-challenging trip. More often than not, they will provide you with aid and help you out of troubles,

so it is always suggested to trek together with some experienced friends.
