Children and families matter in Greenville. When families succeed, our community and nation grow stronger. When families fail, we all lose. Last year, more than 1,700 of Greenville’s children – and nearly 4,200 in the Upstate- were confirmed to be endangered in their own homes. At best, these kids are neglected and face each day without the love, support and teaching they need. At worst, they are physically at risk and the state must step in with foster care or other options. That triggers huge public expenses, which often don’t help to build a future for the child.

Our mission is to reduce addiction as the leading cause of family collapse and harm to children. We raise funds and recruit volunteers for programs at The Phoenix Center focused on families and children. These effective, evidence-based programs include Serenity Place, a center for pregnant women, young mothers and preschool children. Eighty percent of our graduate families are healthier and more stable one year later. The Serenity Place model is gaining national attention, and was featured by CNN’s Anderson Cooper in 2012. We also support White Horse Academy, a program designed to rebuild the lives of teenage boys who have struggled with addiction. Boys who graduate the Academy are less likely to use drugs or alcohol than the average US teenager, despite their early struggles. The supporters of The Family Effect have enabled transformation for hundreds of Greenville families. In 2012 alone, more than 200 families in danger of permanent collapse- with both addiction and child neglect confirmed by the state- were able to complete treatment successfully. Hundreds of kids are thriving again at home. Hundreds of parents are grateful to have their lives back. And millions of taxpayer dollars will be saved. We invite you to join the list of influential leaders enabling these transformations.

Our kids and community deserve better. We’ve got to start solving the problem of broken families and children, and that means attacking the problem at its fundamentals. The South Carolina Department of Social Services reports that 85% of all children who are neglected and sent into foster care have one thing in common- an addicted parent. The Family Effect and hundreds of supporting companies and donors are working to solve this problem at its root.
