What a great way to promote your region. Part of an article that ap-peared in the Northern Miner News-paper. Well done Charters Towers and what a great incentive for other shires to do likewise.

Push on for a Towers pro-motional car By MIKE GRIFFIN

THE push is on to acquire Charters Towers’ latest promotional tool — a rally car. The idea is the brainchild of local businesswoman Robyn Smith who is associated with the Court House Hotel.

Ms Smith believes the idea behind Charters Towers having its own rally car would prove a powerful promotional tool.

‘‘I’d like to think we could purchase a car that could be entered in the Just4Kids Great Australian Motor Trail which is on in August and which will come through Charters Tow-ers,’’ Ms Smith said.

‘‘I’d like to see the community come to-gether on this.

‘‘This is just a great community, it’s the best place to be.’’

An organising committee has been formed that includes Ms Smith, James Doyle and Rhonda Farmer.

The Just4Kids event is part of the Great Aus-tralian Motor Trail and will depart Towns-ville on Friday, August 8, travel to Ravens-wood that day and be in Charters Towers on the Saturday and Sunday.

That visit will coincide with the staging of the Mines Ball, scheduled for Saturday, Au-gust 9.

CHARTERS TOWERS MINERS BALL

The theme for this year’s Charters Towers Ball is—’THE GOLD RUSH DAYS’. Dress up in all your finery and come along as the ladies and gentlemen did back in the 1800’s. Very dashing. More on the BALL in our next edition.

JUST4KIDS HELPS OUT THE TOWNSVILLE SPORT-ING WHEELIES. Many thanks to our wonderful en-trants, supporters and sponsors The money donated to Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association Townsville office at the conclusion on the 2007 Great Australian Motor Trail has been used to purchase a sports ability kit. The kit consists of 5 inclusive games that anyone with or without a disability, young or old can play. · Boccia - a bowls-type target game played at the Paralympics; suitable for all abilities · Goalball - a Paralympic sport devel-oped for players who have a vision im-pairment. It is an exciting invasion game that introduces new challenges to both sighted and vision impaired players. · Sitting volleyball – a Paralympic sport for players for whom standing volleyball may not be an option. As all players re-main seated during play, sitting volley-ball. · Polybat – an accessible version of table tennis · Table cricket – a dynamic table ver-sion of cricket for players of all abilities while maintaining the three main ele-ments of cricket - batting, bowling, and fielding - as well as most of the key rules. This kit will be based in the Townsville office and will be loaned out as re-quested. You never know some of the games might even make an appearance at the 2008 Motor Trail

There was no better place to launch our new website than the Townsville Meet & Greet at the Mercure. In-cluded in the guests were Burdekin Shire Mayor Lyn McLaughlin who is keen to support a community vehi-cle. Jo and Alan are new entrants, Pete Carnsew; and Rhonda who heads up the Charters J4K Ignition group, and are entering their own car.

Hang around on Thursday night and you could be lucky enough to be in the draw and win a free J4K Motor Trail entry. You will have needed to Register for the Expo and condi-tions apply.

MARTIN JOSSELYN, ALONG WITH 3 MATES, WILL BE JOINING US ON THIS YEAR’S EVENT. Here is his story. Photo: Martin and his mates at the Kokoda Trail Memorial. “Tracey, Graeme and took over the Imperial pub on the 17th of December 2007. We bought the hotel as a base for a larger tourism venture "Adventure Australia" that will involve a fleet of 4WD's and guided tours through the central interior, across to the Kimberley's, up to the Kakadu, the Gulf and Cape York, and some local tours from here to Cooktown via the inland route. We will visit many site's of interest and stay at some of the largest rural stations and remotest areas in Australia as part of the experience. We are also working with some indigenous communities to develop an experience which displays the rich culture of our Aboriginal people. Since we came to the Hotel we have discovered a rich history in the little town of Ravenswood, one which dates back to the early 1880's when gold was discovered in the area. The Hotel was built in 1902 by Mr James Delaney and the original building burnt down later that year, the existing building was rebuilt in 1903 and remains as the only Hotel in Ravenswood to have continually traded from that time, through both World Wars and other periods of conflict and hardship. The Delaney family owned the building & busi-ness up until the early 90's and since that time there have been a small number of other local owners. Graeme and I intend to fully restore the building over the next five years and retain it in all its splendour for many years to come. It remains as one of the few operating and untouched Hotels of this era left in Queensland today. The Imperial Hotel and Ravenswood Township is becoming increasingly more popular with groups of travellers both international and domestic who come for weekend getaways and adventures. Live entertainment here and other theme nights bring lots of patrons and the atmosphere of the Hotel is electric, comfortable and casual which gener-ally provides for all.”

BRISBANE/GOLD COAST MEET AND GREET A great night was had by all at our recent get together at Chin Chin Restaurant. Thirty of us enjoyed a delicious Chinese banquet and a few drinks, of course. Good to catch up with some of our regular Trailers and fantastic to welcome new entrants Phil Binder and Ryan Martin. Both are quite excited about their new venture. Bo, formerly from WIN Townsville, and now a Brisbaneite, joined us and took some footage, so for those of you who couldn't make it keep an eye out for updates on our website www.just4kidsmotortrail.com.au All will be revealed.
