translation of "O jeito de ser anglicano´´.

These dialogues are held every 15 days on

Sundays at 10 am, within the community of San

Esteban, in the Aguada neighborhood.

The next meeting will be on July 31st.

Everyone´s invited.

BI-NATIONAL WOMEN´S ENCOUNTER

We share again, the details towards the cost of cost of attending this Encounter.

As explained in the last edition of The Town Crier, this

encounter is held every two years. This year the

Diocese Meridional of Brazil will be our host.

The gathering will be held from 11 to 13 November at

the Mariapolis Center in San Leopoldo, RS.

Theme: "The look of one who knows how to love!"

Motto: "... the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now" Rom. 8:22

Each person who wishes to participate is responsible for their own transportation and registration fees.

The Diocese Meridional has already informed us that it wishes receive payment for registrants in the

following manner:

"Accommodations will be filled according to the order of the arrival of registrations, which will be

overseen by a Diocesan Board. The deadline for the payment of the first installment (of either R $ 98.00

or R $ 116.00 per person) is August 15, 2016. The second installment, of a similar amount must be

received by October 15, 2016. "

The two different prices refer to the two types of accommodation offered: a room for two or three

persons with private bathroom is the highest price; a room for three to six people is the lowest price.

We have been allowed 15 spaces in total.

Information: Vilma @ 095 505 202

And now, a hopeful clarification: *The cost for each person who wants to participate is their own registration (payment of which is described above) and also the cost of transportation to Porto Alegre. A round trip from Montevideo to Porto Alegre is between $ 5,000 and $ 6,500 pesos per person. *At this time the two costs (registration and transportation) are the responsibility of the person (or community to which it belongs).

THE CHRISTIAN TEMPLE - II I. Architecture and Christianity

The need felt by Christians to be together to pray and worship God as an expression of their faith and their membership in the Body of Christ, brings with it the need to share the same physical place, to give greater cohesion and unity to the Church. These places do not have magical properties, nor are they essential (and in that there is a difference with those places in other religions). They are like makeshift tents in our pilgrimage to the heavenly temple. So are the temples in Christianity. And their architecture and furnishings can say much about the quality of our life of faith and communion in the Body of Christ. We often hear that they only reproduce or adapt models of the past without reflecting civilian buildings such as cinemas or lecture halls. They were not born of inspiration and do not inspire the faithful. Unfortunately, in many cases, that's true. And both the "antiquarianism" as "futurism" are unsatisfactory. Christians took models from their cultures, working and adapting them to the requirements of their faith, in order that liturgy and architecture complement one another. II The home: First meeting-place for Christians Christians used their homes, as their first meeting places. It was when the church was known as ´´house-church´´. The rooms were conditioned for community and religious use, and this lasted for nearly 300 years. There are archaeological discoveries in modern-day Turkey which attest to this. At the time, the meetings followed the pattern which the Jews used: readings from the Old Testament, the Apostles, psalms, commentaries, prayers and finally the Eucharistic meal was shared – the new and definite sacrifice, awaiting the Parousia (the Second Coming) of the Messiah (Jesus) who would return to reign over all the world. III.- The first temples.- They appear around the middle of the 3rd century, early 4th. There are three models: the Syrian synagogue, the Greco-Roman basilica and the mixture of these two.

a) Syrian Synagogue model.- The temple is rectangular, with two rows of columns formed three naves, facing East (linked to light, the rising of the sun of justice, to

Christ himself). On the eastern wall there was an apse (semi-circle). In middle, a table was placed, which had different shapes: the Christian altar. In the middle of the hall, there was a construction called a "bema" which was a raised platform. On it were placed: the bishop´s seat, and places

for readers, priests and lecterns or ´´ambos´´ for the proclamation of the Holy Scriptures In the "bema" which was surrounded by a low wall or sometimes a balustrade, there was also a box called the "ark" where the scrolls of the Holy Scriptures were kept. The access was from the South side. b) The Greek/Roman ´´basilica´´ model – This was named ´´basilica´´ because it apdopted the shape of the imperial public buildings of the time ( "basileus" = "emperor" in Greek and "Greco-Roman" , the dominant type of culture at that time). The temple, rectangular in shape with two rows of columns that made

up 3 naves (as in the previous one) faces east-west. The doors are to the east. The altar can be in the apse (as above) or in the middle of the hall. The "bema" lies not in the middle of the hall but nearest the apse. Within, are two lecterns or "ambos" and seats for readers, and it was also enclosed by a low wall or railing. If the altar is not within the apse, then in its place is the Bishop´s seat and next to it and on both sides, are

the priests seats. Between the altar (when it was not within the apse) and the "bema" the choir stood.

c) Mixed or Eclectic.- On the Greco-Roman basilica plan, which can also have the square plan (and in this case, the interior columns tend to be eliminated and therefore there are no naves), one finds the elements for the altar and the ´´bema´´. IV.- To take into account: In the models we´ve seen, we see that 1) how a model of construction was taken from society at that time (public buildings), i.e. rectangular, two-slanted roofs were used and adapted for liturgical use. The apse was the place where the imperial authorities´ activities unfolded (judges, magistrates, etc.). The nave was where the people, came and went. The side aisles was where business which was linked to the public, lawyers, litigants, clerks, etc., unfolded. 2) The altar is always removed from the wall, allowing the celebrant to face the community/congregation. 3) The people of God, are organized hierarchically within the liturgical space. There is an exclusive seat for the bishop, who was the only celebrant, and is called the seat or cathedra/chair. Priests or elders, have their seats around the bishop. The choir

has a specially designated place, as do the readers of scripture. The faithful stand (benches/pews would appear a thousand years later), first near the "bema" and then approaching the alter, to share in the Eucharistic Prayer and the distribution of the sacraments: bread and wine. 4) There is always a place specially

designated for the proclamation of the Word of God (lectern or ambo), either from Scripture or to the comment on these. (There were no pulpits, these would appear almost a thousand years later.)

ABOUT THE PARISH OF SAN PABLO & SAN PEDRO, PROGRESO

Within the pile of historical documents of the Parish, are the memoirs of Daniel Crawford, Missionary and Lay Minister which are dated 2003. However, it is possible that San Pablo´s Mission, began back in 1997, when Caroline and Marcos, Missionaries from England, regularly visited and worshiped, sharing the Word which

was then followed by an agape, at Graciela Diano and her husband´s home. Other folk gradually arrived and the pastoral caring was seen to by Miguel Tamayo, at that time, still a Priest. He was occasionally assisted by Gonzalo Soria and Marcelo Chiesa and it was at the time of +William Godfrey´s episcopacy. According to a diary of activities, written and illustrated in Daniel Crawford´s own handwriting, dated 2003, 14 (baptised) christians met to study the Bible and the Eucharistic Liturgy – 8 of these were adults. In 2003, the purchase of the land took place and subsequently, the construction of the chapel, which was finally consecrated on November 21, 2004, by Bishop Tamayo, for the worship to God and the service of the People. In 2012, on the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Mission became a Parish and the Rev Alejandro Manzoni became Parish Priest, installed by Bishop Miguel Tamayo. Service and co-participation in the social life of the village, are perhaps the salient features of the Anglican community in Villa Felicidad. Within the new chapel, Nadra offered free cooking clases, to which Carmen Baladon

(better known as Coca), became part … and thereafter, others joined, such as Lila, Mercedes, Pilas and more … who, for various reasons, no longer meet with any frequency. Most, if not all the Anglican Christians have become involved through activities such as organized women's football – which was organized by the Anglicans, children´s bible-study and naturally, Bible courses such as ´´El Sembrador´´ and others. It is of interest to note that most families choose to baptize their children in our parish, and in August we will have three baptisms, which is a blessing for our small parish within Villa Felicidad … which although it´s growing, it´s still a small and humble

neighborhood of Progreso.

Community-geared service activities, are usually the time when the entire parish community gathers and joins in the task, it is a time of getting-together with those who no longer share in the liturgical communion. Within the jurisdiction of the Parish, there is a programme which seeks to serve

children aged 1-4 years old. This is within an agreement with the Uruguayan state and is the CAIF-centre: ´´Los Granjeritos´´. Another, similar one, is loated at Los Cerrillos but to date, our community has not been in touch with that centre. There is also another Project: Hogar San Pablo, which works with young men and women, ages 12-18, also in an agreement with the Uruguayan state. The youth are sent their by a Judge and they are allowed to continue their education/curriculums, or their secondary education, or studies within UTU (technological studies), depending on each one. We have visited them and they have started to take part in some activities. We are currently going thru a period of integration, between the projects and the parish but distances do not make it easy, other than with Los Granjeritos´, child-care centre. One interesting note is that folk frequently come to the parish, seeking to use the space for different activities (children´s birthdays, weddings and even 15-year-old birthday parties – this is a very typically, cultural affair. There is a closeness between the folk who come to the Sunday services, most of whom are quite elderly. At this time, we have a few activities, such as catechism for school-kids, led by Mercedes and Paola and a vegetable work-shop which will begin again, in September. In October we´ll have a Spring Dance for all the neighbourhood´s children and we´re also considering activities for Young folk and adults. Our revenues are scarce but we´re considering and praying that we may be able to build a multipurpose room –

which would be useful for Villa Felicidad, to be used for birthdays, weddings, meetings and would be a source of income for our parish. Currently we manage, primarily thanks to second-hand clothes sales and thanks to Vilma, Bishop Michele´s wife, who gives us a huge helping-hand, sharing clothes with us which are donated to the Cathedral. Sunday worship is at 11:00 a.m. and if there are enough folk present, at 10:30 we have a simple Bible study. On Saturdays, we have Baptism clases and anything to do with Christian education.
