Welcome to the Town Crier's June edition. This is probablythe Parish's busiest month with activities taking place in StHelier almost every day. Our voluntary groups andcommittees will be working hard to ensure that the Parishcontribution to events such as the Battle of Flowers aresuccessful while we have a breakfast recruitmentpresentation mid-month in an effort to boost membershipof the Honorary Police. The various departments of the Parish will be hoping thattheir budgets will receive the support of the ManagementBoard and the Accounts Committee before the ParishAssembly convenes early next month to consider theamount of rates for the new financial year. At the same timethe States will be sitting for a large proportion of the monthto debate propositions with significant repercussions onour Parish, in particular, the North of Town Masterplan andthe Draft Island Plan, so the Parish's eleven States' memberswill hopefully be providing a united 'pro St Helier' front atleast in respect of most of the debates.A special Parish Assembly has been organised forWednesday 8th June at 7.30pm at which all aspects of theIsland Plan affecting our Parish will be explained anddebated by parishioners. To contact the editorial team, please call 811821 or email [email protected]

Our recycling scheme is progressing well, with the running totalfor recyclables currently standing at 26 tonnes. Thanks go to allthe households currently participating. We continue to developthe sorting process at the Parish Depot to make it as streamlinedas possible, but it would certainly help if you could put in therecycling bags only include the items indicated on your recyclingleaflet. Please remember: if in doubt, leave it out!

We have a number of stores working in partnership with theParish to support recycling and from which replacement recyclingbags can be collected:

• Spar - St Aubin’s Inner Road, First Tower• Best One - Mont Cochon, First Tower• Bay Stores - St Aubin’s Inner Road• Newsfayre - Rouge Bouillon• Checkers Express - Grand Vaux• Manor Park Stores - La Pouquelaye• Rose’s Mini Market - Havre des Pas• Cleveland Stores - Havre des Pas

A big thank you to them all. Any further stores happy to helpsupport the recycling scheme in any way can contact DebraD’Orleans, Director of Municipal Services, on 811708 or [email protected]. Bags can also be collected from theTown Hall and Parish Depot on La Grande Route de St Jean.We have introduced three recycling/litter bins to the town centrefor “Recycling on the Go”. Located at Snow Hill, Charing Cross andthe junction of Queen Street and Halkett Street, the bins are splitinto three individual compartments to collect newspapers andmagazines at one end, cans and plastic drink bottles in themiddle, and general litter at the other end. On top is a cigarettestub plate. Initial findings show that people are keen to usethem. We are however receiving a large number of coffee cups inthe can and plastic bottle compartment. Please place coffee cupsin the general litter compartment as we cannot currently recyclethese items. Thanks to McDonalds for their support in introducing the newrecycling bins in the town centre.

Lots of Parishioners took advantage of Open Day at theMunicipal Services Depot at Mont-à-l’Abbé to see whatgoes on behind the scenes in the Parish. The event tookplace on the last day of the Easter school holidays, timedto show the Parish greenhouses at their busiest. Parksstaff were on hand to answer questions about how theParish manages to grow the vast majority of its plantsfrom seed, the secret of successful hanging baskets andthe challenges of achieving high floral standards in theparks, gardens, cemeteries and open spaces of St Helier.Other departments’ work was also on view, including themechanical workshop, where the Parish’s fleet of vehiclesis maintained, and the new recycling processes showinghow the recyclables collected from householders aresorted, and how compost is being made from kitchenwaste collected from the Havre des Pas area.

Tucked away in a sunny positionoff Trinity Hill, St Ewolds, which ishome to 66 residents, prides itselfon the excellent care given byexperienced and caring staff.

This year Easter was celebrated with anumber of events. The residents wereparticularly thrilled when the childrenof adjoining Avranches Day Nurseryarrived to sing and parade their Easterbonnets. Themed Easter quizzesfollowed together with a raffle andbingo, with all proceeds going to the residents’ fund. The recent Royal Wedding was also a cause for celebration.Residents and staff alike donned red, white and blue andmarked the occasion with bucks fizz at the start of theproceedings, followed by a BBQ for residents, families andfriends. Buntings, banners and flags bedecked the Home. Many residents and staff have been involved in creating our

The Parish is currently negotiating the hand-over process ofroads, parks and play areas at Clos Vaze on Tower Road.Several outstanding issues require attention by thedevelopers, including the play area, surfacing, repairs to theswing seats, shrubbery and tree maintenance and testing ofdrainage and sewer systems. Hopefully, the drainage andsewer systems will be of sufficient standard for adoption byTTS. Laying out the grass area formally proposed as the location ofa community centre is nearing completion, with additionaltree planting scheduled for this autumn. Further landscapeimprovements will take place in the next few weeks. Wood-chip has been placed over several locations and furthermaterial will be added during the planting season. Increasedcleaning of the play area will be carried out by the Parish untilthe full hand-over.

Mr Henry Millard-Beer, whojoined us in December 2009, purchased a number ofapple and pear trees and our very own Parish gardenershelped him to plant them. Everyone was excited watching the Parish maintenanceteam create a patio area outside of the main diningroom. This will enable residents to dine alfresco …weather permitting of course!!Liberation Day was once again celebrated in style thisyear with a number of residents enjoying the morning’sevents in Liberation Square, followed by afternoon tea atthe Town Hall.

Finally, staff are now busyarranging a car boot salewhich will take place onSaturday 28th May on thePeople’s Park. In the latest of our series, local author andhistorian Geraint Jennings completes the storyof one of St Helier’s most august Connétables, whose bust in Parade Gardens is passed everyday by people coming into town.

The career of Philippe Baudains as Connétable ofSaint Helier involved a dramatic comeback, andsimilarly our tale of the life and deeds of the manwhose bust stands as a monument in Parade Gardensreturns for a second instalment.

Seriously ill and having completed five terms in office,Philippe Baudains retired in 1896. The prognosis wasnot encouraging and he was not expected to survivelong in retirement. During his time in office, he hadbeen involved in the years of wrangling over the DonMonument and the statue of Queen Victoria. So,mindful of the tendency of public monuments inJersey to be mired in wrangling and wishing to actwhile there was still time, the many supporters ofPhilippe Baudains commissioned a Scottish sculptor,Archibald MacFarlane Shannon, to model a clay bustof their hero. By this time Philippe Baudains wasrather haggard as a result of his illness, so the featurescaptured by the vigorous finger work of the sculptorwere not the rounded and rather chubby ones of theConnétable in his prime.

Baudains left Jersey for medical treatment in England, with many lamenting his departure and few everexpecting to see him alive again. But at least they'dhave the bust to remind them of him, and the work ofcasting the sculpture in bronze as a posthumousmemorial proceeded quickly.

It was with some delight, as well as a measure ofembarrassment, that the completed sculpture wasunveiled on 23 September 1897 with the sitter inattendance, having made a spectacular recoveryagainst all expectation and looking strikingly less gaunt than hissculpture. A newspaper commented, "The gentleman he had toportray four or five months ago did not look like the gentleman theysaw that day; and he was sorry Mr Shannan was not able to see howdifferent Mr Baudains now was to when he was here last." An 1899guidebook later quipped about the Baudains bust, "There seems tobe an advantage in erecting statues during the life-time of theoriginal, and that is, that the former need not necessarily be like thelatter."

Philippe Baudains, now retuned to health, attempted to win back hisformer post of Connétable. Sensationally and against expectations,he was soundly defeated by his incumbent successor, whereuponBaudains promptly stood for Deputy of Saint Helier - and waselected. However, he only spent a few months representing theParish in the States as Deputy, as the post of Connétable becamevacant when the incumbent accepted appointment as a Crown

Officer. And this time Baudainswas returned to head themunicipality in 1899.

There is a disadvantage for apolitician in having a statueerected of himself during hislifetime. The bust in ParadeGardens provided an easy targetfor discontent. During theheated atmosphere in Townbetween English speakers andFrench speakers in 1900 due tothe Boer War, Philippe Baudainsattempted to maintain order andsuppress rioting and attacks onbusinesses owned by Frenchspeakers. He attempted topersuade the Parish Assembly tocompensate shop owners whoseproperty had been damaged bymob violence - a propositionwhich was defeated. Successiveattacks were made on the bust:tarring and feathering, whitewash, and red paint.During the night of 24 May 1900a mob gathered outside theConnétable's house in theParade. Philippe Baudainsemerged to give a speech anddisperse the threatening throng. The familiar oratory worked onthis occasion, but society waschanging and Baudain'spaternalistic manner no longerchimed the same way in the20th century.

He stood for re-election in 1902and, still popular with many inthe Parish, defeated hisopponent. However, the RoyalCourt annulled the election onthe grounds of an electoralirregularity - a strange turn of

events for Philippe Baudains who had fought so hard to get thelaw on the secret ballot passed in the States. The election was re-run and on this occasion Philippe Baudains increased his majority. He stood again for re-election in 1905, but the tide had turned -the voters convincingly cast their votes for new blood.

Philippe Baudains retired from public life and died three yearslater on 4 January 1908, at the age of 72. It's worth pausing amoment, as you pass through Parade Gardens, to take a closerlook at the Baudains monument and remember someone whocontributed a lot to the Parish and the Island - but don't go as faras the Breton seasonal workers who offered up prayers in front ofthe bust in the mistaken belief that the gaunt impressive headwith the wild hair and beard was our patron saint, Helier!

We are aware that the existence of Residents' Parking Zones in StHelier is causing problems for some parishioners who are finding itmore difficult than it used to be to receive visitors by car. We are working hard to try to resolve these problems and toincrease the supply of visitor spaces. A section of the RPZ inthe Parade was put back to ordinary paycard parking as adirect result of the feedback we received. We have recentlywritten to all of our permit holders to urge them not to parkin visitor spaces when there are other spaces available. Weare carrying out surveys to ensure that the permit system isnot being abused; at the same time we are doing our best toassist the businesses within the zones. However, there is no doubt that there is an overall shortageof parking spaces in the latest and largest RPZ, St Thomas. Now that the planning application to build flats in the Parishowned car park in Lempriere Street has been withdrawn, theConstable is pursuing a plan to create expand the number ofspaces available in that car park which will help us meet theparking requirements of shoppers, visitors and residents. Wehave also been seeking the support of States departments, some of which have parking spaces in these areas which arerented out to commuters rather than being made availablefor public parking as I believe they should be.We receive both positive and negative feedback about thezones from both residents within the zones and otherislanders. The Streets Co-ordinator for the Parish would valueany further comments about the RPZs [email protected].

Tow n mattersTown Centre ManagerRichard Mackenzie bringsus up to date with monthlyevents and activities aroundthe streets of St Helier.

That town centres continuously evolve is a fact of life, driven bychanges in demand from their visitors. When I first startedworking in the retail trade, for example, one of the mostdemanded outlets were millinery departments, alwaysdisplayed prominently at the front of store in prime retailspace. Their hats were not merely purchased for weddings, butfor every day wear. Milliners are now few and far between(when was the last time you bought a hat?), and certainly nolonger feature in the departmental store that I worked for.Conversely, however, there are many new departments to taketheir place. This is evolution in action. Some changes are more marked than others, however. It’s withregret that we say goodbye to Wheways Sports from the town Top: Rococo Art and Gifts at Liberty Wharf

centre, although they will continue to trade via the internet. We wish them every success with this new mode of trading. It is often felt that our town is being taken over by multi-national chains whereas actually half the new openingsare by local independent traders. They come up with someunique and interesting ideas, as varied as a Caribbean Café,a traditional sweet shop and a shop that allo ws your feetto nibbled by fish!A good example of this is Rococo Art and Gifts at Liberty

Wharf which specialises in selling locally produced and recycled goods - theirrange of recycled products made from old plastic coffee cups is truly amazing. This type of shop, which also stocks Fair Trade items, is so essential to thelifeblood of our town, and vital in making St Helier a unique and interestingplace to visit. To further enhance this unique retail experience, the new Flea Market hastraded in town for the last two Saturdays. The two venues chosen are Old Streetand Hilgrove Street, operating on alternative weeks. It has been greeted withenthusiasm by Saturday shoppers. You can buy a T-shirt or vinyl record from thediverse offerings and it is hoped that the mark et will continue until September. There are limited space available and if you are interested ring 077977 824843or email Bernie Manning on [email protected]

Everyone wants to know what’s in fashion this summer, butperfecting this season’s effortless summer look really depends onyour age. If you’re young and a trend setter, then this summer isall about shorts, the shorter the better, worn with a fabuloussheer, sexy blouse. The rest of this season’s key trends workfor any age – vivid colours, nautical stripes and boldprints are sure to add the feel good factor to yoursummer wardrobe. White is one of this season’s hotcolours and always makes an impact. Get the lookby teaming a pair of white trousers with a bright tunictop or a relaxed blazer. Summer’s overall style is flattering and feminine, and aneasy way to achieve that is with one of this season’s dresses. From classic shifts to dressy floral prints, and the extremelypopular maxi dress, there’s something for everyone, so it’s notsurprising dresses have been called ‘this season’s must-have’ and ‘yourbest fashion friend’. And while skirts are back – look out for classic all-round pleated styles – trousers have moved on. From ankle-skimmingcigarette pants to wide legged trousers, the new shapes are elegant andsuper stylish. Shorts are around, but cropped trousers are a more wearableoption. This season’s shirts and blouses come in pretty candy stripes orfluid floral prints – wear them under the revamped short blazer. If you looked in your wardrobe and panicked when summer arrived earlythis year, you’re not alone. Regardless of our age, we’re all adopting a morecasual, relaxed way of dressing, and last year’s styles don’t always work. Atde Gruchy you’ll find lots of new brands that tap into the latest ‘lifestyleimage’ look and mix cool, easy care fabrics with relaxed shapes that put theemphasis on comfort.

Poolside:With holidays on the horizon, don’t forget to check out swimwear. Mostnow come cup sized for a perfect fit, and Fantasie and Freya are the labelsto look out for if you’re well endowed. Control suits flatter curvy figuresand the Pour Moi? range starts from as little as £33, so there’s no excusenot to look stylish whilst sipping cocktails by the pool!

This month’s Style Solutions Q&A – How to pack lightQ. “The luggage weight restrictions on flights mean that I’ll have to cut down my holiday packing. Any ideas?” A. It’s easy when you follow the rules!1. When you’re planning what to take, choose two main colours (black/white, navy/cream, etc) and add one accent colour. That way you’ll limit your accessories, which automatically reduces weight, and maximize your outfit combinations. 2. Only pack things you know you’ll wear - things you’re tempted to pack ‘just in case’ often end up staying ‘in the case’. 3. Save those plastic garment bags from the drycleaners and use them to roll your clothes in; it’ll prevent creasing and add no weight. 4. Check the hotel’s facilities. If there’s a hairdryer and toiletriesalready in your room, you won’t need to bring your own. 5. And do you really need ten pairs of shoes with matching bags for a week’s holiday?

Looking backon

Putting the Assembly Room to good use The Town Hall’s magnificent Assembly Room has hosted various events recently which have given a widevariety of parishioners the change to enjoy its unique ambience. The Parish’s staff and Social Committee arebecoming adept at providing receptions (vin d’honneurs) as well as more ambitious fare such as tea for largenumbers and three course meals. On the music front, the Assembly Room has proven to be a first-class performance space, with two fineconcerts taking place in recent months. Fourteen students from the Escola Das Artes in Funchal, Madeira, werein the Island as guests of the Jersey Academy of Music. As well asperforming a variety of brass and string pieces in the AssemblyRoom they gave master-classes to hundreds of local studentsbefore rounding off their visit with a concert at the Academy'sbase in St Saviour. The Band of the Island of Jersey has also paid what has becomean annual visit to the Town Hall to perform a selection of pieces. The Band is usually seen on the march on major Island occasionssuch as the Battle of Flowers and Remembrance Sunday, as wellas performing in Howard Davis Park during the summer, so it is aparticular treat to hear the band in concert, especially the drumcorps.

The Assembly Room alsoproved to be an idealvenue for the Parish’sRoyal Weddingcelebrations, generouslysponsored by Marks andSpencers, with a teaparty for over 100parishioners, while ithosted nearly twice thatnumber for theLiberation Day creamtea, featuring war timesongs from ImogenNicholls and musicalnumbers by GeorgeMcAllister.

Down Your Way WalkSt Helier was the setting for the final walkorganised by Frank Falle and the Variety Clubon Sunday 22nd May for the Lieutenant-Governor and Mrs Ridgway. His Excellencyhas taken part in guided historical walksaround all of the Parishes since his arrival in2006, and it has been traditional that the finalwalk takes place in our Parish. For this, thethird series of walks arranged by Mr Falle, thefocus of attention was on Fort Regent, andmore than 150 walkers, escorted by BlueBadge guides, took advantage of theopportunity to see parts of the Fort that areusually closed to public view, including thewell, reckoned to be one of the deepest man-made wells in Europe.

The climax of the walk wasthe unveiling by theLieutenant-Governor of areplica pump that hasbeen refurbished byParish volunteers andinstalled adjacent toSouth Pier where aworking pump used toprovide water for shipsin the eighteenth and nineteenthcenturies. After the walk the Parish’s staff and SocialCommittee were once again called upon to host the walkers, assisted by Fred Dorey, the chef from St Ewolds ResidentialHome, who produced shepherd’s pie and apple crumble for150 persons. The Co-op generously supported the event, which raised more than £600 for Variety.

St Helier supports youngarchitectural students The Town Hall has been providing meeting space for ateacher and students from Beaulieu Convent who aredeveloping their interest in architecture. Dawn Croke, pictured with some of her class, has been looking closely atmodern architectural styles in the Parish, with particularreference to the future of Ann Court, currently being used asa car park but destined to have some kind of housingdevelopment under the North of Town Masterplan. MsCroke and her students have been meeting regularly afterschool in the Town Hall to discuss their ideas, and have hada tour of some of the town’s architectural highlights with theConstable, Simon Crowcroft. They plan to present their workas part of Architecture Week being held this month.

Normandy Veterans’ tour 2011 The Parish has once again organised a trip to the Normandy landing beaches, cemeteries and museums for the Jersey branch of the Normandy VeteransAssociation, their families and supporters. The tour, led by local author andhistorian Ian Ronayne, left the Island on Friday 13th May and was based in Caen.During the weekend the group visited Pegasus Bridge, Omaha Beach andcemetery, the cemetery at Ranville, the battery at Longues sur Mer (twinned withthe Parish of St Mary) and Merville, and finished at Arromanches. The trip proved to be a greatsuccess even though some ofthe veterans were preventedfrom taking part throughillness or other commitments. As Clive Kemp was unable toattend, Ian and the Constableplaced a cross on the grave ofDriver George Dransfield, anact of remembrance whichClive always pays on his visitsto Pegasus Bridge which isnear to where Clive’scomrade was killed on D-Day.The Association will be hoping for a good turnout at the Cenotaph tocommemorate D-Day itself, on Monday 6th June. The short service ofremembrance will be followed by a reception in the Town Hall to which all arewelcome, after which the Parish will lay on lunch for the veterans and theirsupporters. f

History: it's just onething after anotherI'm not really one for mountains;lakes worry me rather because theydon't have tides; and why bothertravelling to stretch out on a beachwhen you can do that at home? Onholiday, I prefer visiting towns andcities with museums and historicbuildings. And there must be touristswho come to Jersey for that veryreason (but Tourism could do moreto promote our historic Town in itsown right - but I would say that).I've seen something done in othertowns that I admire: interpretativesigns or plaques that explain thehistory of places. Of course, we've

got the Vingtaine de la Villeplaques marking buildings and soon, but I think that every street'sgot its story and we don't doenough to tell people, whetherresident or arrivals, about thingsthat have happened here andthere. It being a big anniversary year inTown, we've come up with the ideaof posting up around the placesome historical trivia in all threelanguages. When were the first gaslamps in Town lit? Where was thefirst talkie in Jersey shown? Whenwas the pump at the lower end ofTown removed? What was bannedin the French Quarter in June1911? Where did the RJA&HS holdits first cattle show? In which yearwas King Street pedestrianised? How many German uniforms wereburnt at de Gruchy's in 1944?With so many stories at everycorner, one could quite easily setup a rolling programme of adifferent set of posters eachsummer. History, after all, is justone thing after another!

Although known as an urban parish, St Helier hassome surprisingly green areas which make forgood walking. As an osteopath, I view walking as agreat way to help many of the problems I see everyday in clinic. While other forms of exercise targetisolated groups of muscles, walking engages longchains of muscles from your feet to your fingertips.Walking can be a great way to lose weight becauseat high speeds it actually requires more energythan running but, unlike running, there is less impact onthe joints. The twisting action of walking also exercisesthe “oblique” muscles that spiral down from the ribs tothe pelvis and which help give ladies an hour glass figure.Office workers tend to develop sore backs after sitting forlong periods. I often recommend walking to thesepatients because I know the gentle rotations helpinvigorate the muscles and loosen up their spinal joints.

St Helier osteopathAs the days get brighter many of us are startingto think about getting some exercise outside.Although walking is a very simple form ofexercise, it has many unexpected benefits on thebody. Walking not only strengthens the bones, lubricates the joints and tones your muscles, iteven helps your brain cells grow!

Not all kinds of walking are ideal.Sometimes I have to tell patientsto avoid walking on soft sandbecause it makes every stepharder and this can aggravatesome forms of back pain. Walkingwhile you have an existingproblem might cause issueselsewhere; for example, hipstiffness might lead to kneestrain; and weak abdominalmuscles can overwork the spine.Osteopathy is excellent forassessing how the whole body isworking together, and homing inon the source of a problem.A leisurely stroll has numerousbenefits beyond mere exercise. It’s a chance to savour the beautyof where we live, to notice thepassing of the seasons, and toshare time with our companions.

And if you think your enjoyment of walking up the slopes ofVallée des Vaux will be spoilt by aching joints or muscles, consider getting an osteopathic assessment to find thesource of the problem, it could set you on a new pathaltogether!Daniel Thomas is a registered osteopath working at ReactionClinic. He has enjoyed walking in mountain ranges around theworld and it all started on the cliff-paths of Jersey. f

The cavernous confines of theBuddha Bar in St Helier’s WharfStreet seem to have always beenone of Town’s more interestingeateries. From American pizzas toBelgian moules, the food andambiance there was always a littledifferent. So it should be no surprisethe latest occupier is serving upsomething out of the ordinary, anddoing it very well.

While looking round for a recipe to include in St HelierBites, an invite came in from the Golden Buddha Barand Restaurant to try the cuisine on offer and write areview for the Town Crier. It was a proposition toogood to refuse, and so, armed with camera, pen andpaper, we turned up one lunchtime curious and readyto be fed.

A taste of the east St Helierbites Although the name is a bit of a giveaway, the

restaurant’s Thai theme is immediately obviouson entering. A golden Buddha backed bysparkling water feature greets dinners while allaround the décor reflects a taste of the east. But while Thai is undoubtedly the theme, thelunchtime menu, as we discovered, is alsoextensive enough to accommodate moretraditional tastes, with salads, burgers andpaninis on offer. We were there for the Thaifood however, and after a serving of Singhabeer, opted for a mild Chicken Massaman curryand a more spicy sizzling beef and garlic NeauTod Katiam. Both arrived in good time, anddisappeared shortly afterwards as we set aboutthe dishes and accompanying rice. From thesilence, it seemed that good eating was taking place andnotes swapped once finished confirmed satisfaction withthe meal. A final chilled beer and coffee washed it alldown.

We certainly couldn’t find fault with food, service orrestaurant. In the evenings, we understand the menuexpands in choice to include over 130 dishes, while atakeaway service exists for those looking for a stay-at-homeThai experience. For the record, we are willing to try both… if only the offer comes in! f

Many homeowners have taken the opportunity in recent years to carry outmajor and minor improvements to their properties, preferring to increase thevalue of their existing homes rather than entering into the volatile propertymarket. In 2011 it looks like the trend will continue.Home refurbishment is also an opportunity to upgrade appliances, materials andfittings to the latest environmentally friendly and cost effective innovations andmodels. Each month, long-established St Helier company, Romerils, will beoffering advice and ideas on how best to improve a home and increase thevalue of properties.

Not moving? improving

Home Security Contrary to the Hollywood stereotype, most burglaries are not planned weeks inadvance by criminal masterminds. In fact,80 percent of burglars are greenopportunists who choose their targets onthe spur of the moment, using gut instinctand tell-tale signs as a guide.Recognising and avoiding the signs thatscream ‘target’ to neighbourhoodcriminals is an effective way of making aproperty less vulnerable to burglary. Witha few simple modifications to your homeand some changes in your habits, you caneasily develop home security practicesthat will protect your home. Despite increasing technologicalsophistication, the humble old key still iscrucial with regard to home security. Itssafekeeping and dutiful uses, therefore, are as important as the property andpeople being protected. Ourrecommendations are: 1. Don’t hide keys – If you usually hide ahouse key outside your front door, stopdoing it immediately. The first thingsburglars will do if they know someoneisn’t home is search door frames, beneathflower pots, rocks, and welcome mats. Ifyou’ve built a good rapport with yourneighbours, give them a spare key forhome security if you’re afraid you’ll lockyourself out.2. Locks – To keep a burglar from havingeasy access to your home, you shouldhave good, high quality locks on all doorswith outside access. If you are unsure ofyour present locks ask for a Free Surveyand have them checked. If you just

to open part of the way are another devicefor home security.5. Keep valuables out of sight – Keepingyour valuables out of sight is an excellenthome security habit. They would ratherspend their time on houses where theyknow they can get something worthstealing, so put jewellery away in boxeswithin closets, or preferably in a safe. 6. Signs – Even if you don’t have a dog, putting up a “beware of dog” sign in awindow or on a gate is an extremelyeffective way of keeping intruders away. While an intruder may be prepared toavoid or harm a dog he or she can see, they will hesitate to come face to face withwhat could be a Chihuahua or a Germanshepherd.

With the right mind-set, you can guaranteeyour peace of mind and home securitywhile at work or on vacation. Followingsome of these tips will not only help youprotect yourself and your possessions, butwill make others more aware of what theycan do for their own homes as well. Anentire neighbourhood of secure premisesis the ultimate home security. Talk toexpert locksmiths who should provideadvice free of charge.

purchased a new home, have you thoughtabout the keys you were given? Are theythe only ones to your new dwelling? If youcannot answer that question then you needto change the locks immediately. 3. Windows – Keep your windows shut andlocked all the time when you’re not athome, even during the summer. Criminalslooking to break into a house are usuallylooking for unlocked doors and windows,or open doors and windows, which makebreaking in incredibly simple and poorhome security.4. Secondary devices – A good way tokeep your home secure is to add secondarydevices to the locked windows and doors ofyour home. A patio door lock gives slidingdoors extra security. Special locks that only allow windows

A busy month! There are lots of events taking place in our Parish this monthwhich get off to a noisy start (at least if you live in the vicinityof Westmount Hill, Mount Bingham and Victoria Avenue)with the Credit Suisse International Motoring Festival. For thesecond year running we will be formally remembering thebombing of St Helier harbour in June 1940, while theevacuation that took place that month will be marked onSunday 26th June. This year the ceremony, organised byparishioner Jean McLaughlin, will be followed by the launchof a new book containing first-hand experiences of theevacuees. On Friday 17th June we will be helping the Honorary Consulof France when a new monument marking ‘L’appel du DixHuit Juin’ (replacing the one in Parade Gardens) is unveiledon the Albert Pier. Our Norman heritage is the focus of events making up LaFête Nouormande during the same weekend. The Parish is

doing its best to support the continuationof the speaking of Jerriais, with increaseduse of Jerriais in our signage and Jerriaisclasses for beginners at the Town Hall onThursday lunchtimes. On the last day of the month there will be aspecial sitting of the States to mark thedeparture of the Lieutenant-Governor,followed by the opportunity for islanders to

say their goodbyes in the Royal Square.Among the many initiatives His Excellency has brought to theIsland, including the formation of the Army Cadet force and theJersey bobsleigh team, he has shown a particular interest in theBattle of Flowers, and it is thanks to General Ridgway’sencouragement that the Parish re-entered Battle – and verysuccessfully too! – last year. I am sure all Parishioners would wishme on their behalf to offer the Lieutenant-Governor and MrsRidgway our very best wishes for their future.

When memories rhymewith admirationJune is a month of remembrance inNormandy, the 6th being the

commemoration of the D-Day landingon our Normandy beaches. The namesof these sites remain as “Omaha”,“Utah”, “Juno” and “Gold” beaches toremember that the allies liberated the

world from Hitler’s tyranny and fascism. TheNormandy landing beaches have been nominated to bepart of the world-listed patrimony of UNESCO whichvery much deserves its place in this prestigious rank. Iwanted to highlight a story which happened latelywhich proves that people should not forget. In 2007, anAmerican gentleman called David Dewhurst traced, forthe first time, his Dad’s history in Sainte Mere Eglise, thefirst village liberated by US Airborne. It was only therehe discovered that his Dad had led the 505th squadronof B-26s on D-Day, attacking Nazi gun emplacementsonly minutes before the infantry landed on Utah Beach.Mr Dewhurst, deeply touched, since wanted to paytribute to his Dad by contributing to a third of the recentextension project of the Utah beach museum, building ahuge hangar hosting a true B26 that his Dad flew 67years ago and a special flight simulator. The museumwill re-open on the 6th June 2011. A special tribute tohis Dad… his hero… Our hero among many others. If you would like to receive Maison de Normandie’s monthlynewsletter about events and festivals in Normandy, pleasesend us an email [email protected] or become a friend on Facebook: ‘MNMJersey’.

Homes 4 Jersey

Current Issues June 2011The revised island plan, set for debate this month was devised using thesame numbers as those of the States Strategic Plan - 325 more migrantsinto Jersey every year! The reality though is, that on average there has been - 725 moremigrants coming into Jersey, every year for the past 4 years! Overa year late the plan set at 325 has even had much needed sites removedfrom it, why? They say they can change the plans if the numbers currentlybeing processed by the statistics department from the census, show thatthese numbers are wrong. They know the figures are wrong now by more

than 100% and they haveknown that for years (andnow you do too!) They justdonʼt want to admit thisahead of the elections thisyear as this might spoil theirimage of growing thepopulation whilst being atone with the environment!Meanwhile as they jetabroad on an ever frequentbasis, ignoring our housingcrisis at home, we are forcedto focus our attention onthem as they woo moregrowth to our shores fromChina, India, Russia and theNear and Middle East. Theidea that they can do all thisand retain our countrysidewhilst delivering affordablehousing by building higherdensity in town and on Statesowned sites, is very hard tobelieve- look at their

management of our property assets over recent years.(Girls College, Fort Regent, Fort Regent swimming pool, St Saviour’sHospital and many others you may know of.)The Jersey Construction Industry also says the plans for a % of socialhousing being delivered by the private sector in small developments, willjust not work as this idea, taken from the UK, is failing there and in Jerseywe lack the types of protections they have in the UK for this anyway.Itʼs also time you knew, because no one reported it, that theStates recently rejected a proposal to make housing moreaffordable in Jersey. Why?Especially when we know that the average price for a home inJersey is £443,000 compared to £200,000 in the UK. Look.... if youwant to help us put a stop to this fiasco bring all those who careabout these issues with you, to the important Parish Hallmeetings that are coming up, on the 8th of June at the Town Hallin St Helier and for people you may know in St Clement on the9th of June, in that Parish Hall.
