Philip A. Bright Director of Alumni Relations

Amanda Downs Alumni Relations Specialist

Greetings from the Office of Alumni Relations!

W e at the Office of Alumni Relations send regards to you and yours. We also hope that you keep West Virginia State University in your thoughts as we continue throughout

the year. The end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 brought much sadness, starting with the loss of two beloved teachers, Dr. Andrew Aheart and Dr. Stuart McGehee. The disaster in Haiti affected so many individuals worldwide, including our own Dr. Paul Mocombe, Assistant Professor of Sociology at WVSU, who lost his aunt and two cousins in the earthquake. We have come together, the members of the WVSU Family, not only in a candlelight vigil for Haiti, but also in the development of a scholarship for Haitian students to come to WVSU and study this fall. Through this sadness and hardship, we see a bright future ahead for “State.” At the end of April, the “State” Family came together in Atlanta, GA, for the National Alumni Association Conference for a wonderful time of fellowship and progress.

Our Alumni e-mail listing is also growing with more than 1,000 Alumni and Friends receiving updates and event information from our office. If you would like to sign up for the E-newsletter, please contact Amanda at [email protected]. Please join us as we work to make West Virginia State University the very best it can be! Sincerely,Phil and Amanda

WVSU Celebrates the First Ever West Virginia State Day at the Legislature

by MickiAnne HenkelsThis article was originally featured in the WVSU Foundation’s In Support Of magazine.

W est Virginia State University was honored at the State Capitol on Wednesday, February 24th, for the first time in the institution’s history. Governor Joe Manchin made an official proclamation for the day to WVSU President Hazo W. Carter, Jr., and

WVSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. R. Charles Byers.

West Virginia State University Day at the Legislature offered a great opportunity for the University to showcase its history, programs, and projects to Delegates, Senators, and the general public. Thirty displays were set up on the second level of the Capitol, representing 18 institutional entities such as CASTEM, Academic Affairs, Gus R. Douglass Institute, WVSU Foundation, Alumni Affairs, ROTC, Student Government, National Center for Human Relations, and more. Many displays included demonstrations, interactive modules, and giveaways. A big hit with all visitors was the Microsoft Surface demonstrated by GRDI. This revolutionary multi-touch computer responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way. During the noon hour, the WVSU Band provided excellent entertainment from the second level of the Rotunda.

“The day truly highlighted the unique nature and mission of WVSU,” Dr. Byers noted after the event. Very positive press was gained from the event, and legislators were able to see the wide-ranging impact of WVSU on the community and region through education, research, and extension services.

The day concluded with a Legislative Reception in the Hawk’s Nest Room at the Charleston Marriott. Sponsored by the WVSU Foundation, the Reception was attended by more than two dozen Delegates, Senators, staff, and other dignitaries including Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, Senator Erik Wells, Delegate Clif Moore, and Dr. Brian Noland, Chancellor of the WV Higher Education Policy Commission.

this poem is about my reminiscence as a student at West Virginia state.the names of the persons mentioned herein will give you the date.

My first day on the campus is where I begin,Dr. John W. Davis was our president back then.Freshmen were treated rather unkindly as we arrived on the campus from all over the map.We were forced to learn to sing the Alma Mater and had to wear a beanie cap.Chapel was held on Wednesday and Sunday of each week; There were monitors to check and see if you were in your assigned seat.Prexy Davis would admonish us with “no canoeing on the Kanawha or thrills in the hills.”Oh, how Ma Goldston would monitor the cafeteria door to see if you had paid your bill.Ms. Kemp would insist that men wear a tie to her class.I recall how we burned the midnight oil to make sure that we would pass. The campus would come alive each Friday with the ROTC parade.Recalling some students having to depart for home for having failing gradesI remember Prof. Hamblin taking his classes on an early morning field trip to seeIf we could recognize and name the species, family and type of every tree.Ms. Shumate watched carefully over the ladies in her dormMaking sure that each and everyone was in by nine and safe from any male mischief or harm.Oh, there was Dr. Canady who was eccentric and ruled his classroom with an iron hand;He would admonish us for attending a college located in “duckland.”Dean Farrel never forgot a name or face;Dr. Lehner was a kind gentleman from a different race;Mr. Lincoln could make a two syllable name into four. How everyone dreaded taking chemistry and failing under Prof. Moore.Dean Kelley trying to persuade us to join him in church with a seat on the pew;Of course, on Sunday mornings, sleeping late was the only thing we wanted to do.Remember Dr. Hawkins with his weird laughter and tennis racket in hand,Smoky Wilson down at the gym trying to mold us into Superman?Coach Caldwell won many championships with his athletic master planWhile Doc Williams entertained us as the greatest music man.I recall occasional trips to the small town of Dunbar;Of course everyone knows just what that was for.Remember the gathering of the guys at the gym on Friday nights? We seated ourselves around the TV to watch the Friday night fights. The Greek organizations tried like crazy to outdo each otherDuring hell week to initiate new sisters and brothers.Andy served the best hot baloney sandwiches in the state; In his grill, two bucks would cover you for a cheap date. Our alumnus have distinguished themselves world wide.We have doctors, philosophers, educators, politicians, lawyers, generalsand judges who have honored us with fame and pride. Please excuse me if some names I do not recall; However, you can still claim a piece of history with your name inscribed on the Carillon Wall.We are now blessed to be under the leadership of Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr.Who fought to make us West Virginia State University. Now we offer a higher education and cultural diversity. Thoughts of thee will never be few,Alma Mater, we love you.

Colonel Charles E. Stokes, Jr., was born in 1938 and raised in Buffalo, WV. His amazing military career began with his time at Greenbrier Military School and West Virginia State. In April 2009, Charles Edward Stokes Jr. quietly retired from an incredible lifetime of service to our nation and returned to his home on Holden Beach, NC. Charlie is blessed with two children and six grandchildren, and now he has time to spend with them. Charlie’s daughter Camela (Cammie) Renee Noonan lives in Hope Mills, NC. Charlie’s son, Daniel (Danny) Lee Stokes is a U.S. Army Captain with home base at Ft. Lewis, WA. The story of his life, including his many exciting missions and honors, is highlighted in an article for Greenbrier Military School’s website by Deak Roberts. A copy of the entire article can be found on our website at:http://www.wvstateu.edu/alumni/publications

excerpt from Passing in review article for gMs Website by Deak roberts …There was this one time Charlie and his team went out on a recon mission and ran into the enemy who was there in superior strength. The ensuing firefight wasn’t going well and they had to fight their way out to the helo landing zone extraction point. The LZ was hot and they were still fighting as they jumped into the evac helos. Charlie’s helo took a hit as it lifted off and had to land quickly. Fortunately, the glide path of the helo got them about a mile from the firefight. The Army is famous for not leaving anyone behind, and Charlie and his team were no exception. The other helos landed around the downed bird and the Soldiers, with nothing more than hand signals, formed a perimeter until Charlie and the others were safely extracted.

Charlie and his unit made two major raids and four smaller insertions into enemy territory before his luck ran out. On the 7th recon mission, Charlie got hit in the upper thigh by a round from an AK-47. He was evacuated and treated for two months in various hospitals in Vietnam, Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, and in Japan. The Doctors repeatedly told him this was his ticket home. Charlie, now a Purple Heart recipient, would have none of that. As Charlie put it, “There truly is a ‘Band of Brothers’ in War.” As soon as he was well enough, Charlie hobbled back to his command and his “Band of Brothers”….

As a young black teen growing up in segregated Daytona Beach during the 1930s, James “Jimmy” Huger knew what it was like to not only live through very bleak times, but to triumph over them. Huger began his educational career at Bethune-Cookman College where he earned his associate degree. He went on to earn his bachelor’s from West Virginia State, participating in numerous extracurricular activities and eventually meeting his soul mate.

In 1956, when Huger was general secretary for Alpha Phi Alpha, he and his fellow members flew to Montgomery to show their support of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had just been arrested during the Montgomery bus boycott. Huger and Dr. King met again when King visited Bethune-Cookman College to give a speech to the graduating class.

In 1965, Huger started his political career by running for City Commission and became the first black candidate to win the seat. He continued to run for various offices “not as a black man, but as the

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTDr. James E. Huger, Sr. - A champion of civil rights with a dedication to community service

best man.” It was this foray into politics that led Huger to community service where he has shone as a leader and mentor to numerous people and projects.

Through his triumphs and accomplishments, family has remained central to Dr. James E. Huger, Sr.’s life. He was married to his college sweetheart, Phannye Brinson, for over 67 years in a real-life love story like no other. Initially meeting at Bethune-Cookman University, the two did not begin their 71 year relationship until meeting again on the campus of West Virginia State. Phannye, a St. Petersburg native, had an undying love for her family and people. She dedicated many years of her life to community service and teaching. Though Mrs. Huger passed away in March of this year, her memory is alive and well with Dr. Huger and his three sons, seven grandchildren, and a greatgrandchild.

Last July, Dr. James E. Huger, Sr., received the Alpha Award of Merit, the highest honor bestowed by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and was recognized for his dedication to community service. Huger is a lifetime member and former general secretary for the organization. His current and past memberships in varied organizations is quite impressive as is his long list of awards for humanitarianism, civil rights, community service and dedication to excellence. We are very proud to have such a distinguished individual as a fellow alumnus of West Virginia State, and hope all our students can achieve such greatness in their lifetimes.

WVSU Alum’s Legacy Celebrated at Howard Divinity School

i n January, The Howard University School of Divinity celebrated the life and legacy of Lawrence Neale Jones, Ph.D. during its Opening Convocation by renaming a library in his honor.

School of Divinity Dean Alton Pollard III, Ph.D., said naming the library in Jones’ honor immortalizes his contributions to Howard, the School of Divinity, Washington and the nation.

“Dean Jones, as he will always be remembered, was one of the forerunners in the School of Divinity’s history,” Pollard said. “He led this school for 16 years with foresight and perseverance. All those who are fortunate to matriculate, work, teach or do research here are inheritors of his great sacrifice and beneficence.”

Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, he received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State College, a master’s degree in American History from the University of Chicago, a bachelor of divinity degree from Oberlin College Graduate School of Theology, and a Ph.D. in African American Church History from Yale University. Among other positions held, he served as pastor of churches in Ohio, New York City and Washington, DC,

including Church of the Redeemer and Plymouth Congregational. He was Dean of the Chapel at Fisk University; Dean of the Faculty and Acting President of Union Theological Seminary, where he was the first African American to hold that position; and Dean of his beloved Howard University Divinity School, where he served with passion and distinction for over 16 years.

Enrollment at the Howard Divinity School grew so rapidly during his tenure that the school had to be relocated twice to larger quarters. During his long years in life’s vineyard, he wrote many pieces, including Soundings, Theological Reflections and Notes from a Preacher’s Desk. After his retirement, he wrote African Americans and the Christian Churches, 1619-1860, which was published in 2007, when he was 86 years old. He was the recipient of many honorary degrees and awards, befitting an extraordinary person.

Jones passed away on December 7, 2009, following a protracted illness. He was 88 years old.
