The tombstones in Bellie Churchyard, including those now buried beneath the surface, have been surveyed in great detail by The Moray Burial Ground Research Group, assisted by the Friends of Bellie Churchyard. Each tombstone tells its own story, and it has been difficult to decide which ones should be selected for illustration. Hopefully, however, they give an insight into the life and death of some of the people of Bellie and Fochabers. 6/7 Sacred to the memory of GEORGE MVIRHEAD LLD, FRSE, Speybank, Fochabers, Commissioner for the Gordon Richmond Estates in Scotland from July 1897 until September 1923. Born 15th March 1845, died 29th January 1928... 108 In memory of JAMES MILNE, 41 years Schoolmaster of Bellie who died at Fochabers 12th June 1856 aged 71 years... 139 To the memory of the family of the late Revd ROBERT CUSHNY, Minister of this Parish for 38 years... 142 Chest Stone ‘The time will come’ Sacred to the memory of JOHN BARDONDON departed this life at Gordon Castle after (a) short illness 16th August 185(3) aged 39 years. The Saunders Stone... 357 Flat stone, very worn, now lying between stones 356/357 – Here lyes the body of ALEXANDER CUIE who dyed the 23 day of January 1739, his spouse HELEN HAY who dyed the 22(23) day of March 1773(5). 378a A heavily damaged and eroded wall monument set in a fragment of the ruined church commemorate GULIELMUS ANNAND, Minister, who died November 1699, A matrimonial achievement of the ANNAND and HAMILTON families is surrounded by a helmet and mantling. The Gordon Mausoleum Most of the burials of the Gordon family were either in Huntly in the early years or in Elgin Cathedral, but 3 members of the family found their last resting place in Bellie Churchyard. Adam Gordon of Newtongarrie is the only one recorded as being interred in the impressive Gordon Mausoleum. Bellie War Memorial This Cross is placed to the memory of the men of the District of Spey Bay who gave their lives in the Second World War 1939-1945. Also located in the churchyard are Commonwealth War Graves of one Australian and five Canadian airmen.
