Rolling the Ball

By Don Roberts

I first heard the expression “Rolling the ball”at one of our early Summer Seminars. Itwas in a class being taught by Secret

Service Agent (and Isshin ryu yudansha) EdKing. Ed san explained that rolling the ball wasa technique of the protective unit and involvedturning and spinning a suspicious individualaway from a potentially dangerous encounter. The maneuver was beneficial to the personbeing protected as well as the person being“rolled” and removed from a potentiallydangerous confrontation.

The rolling of the ball discussed here isn’t verydangerous but can be very beneficial. One firstmust purchase an inexpensive exercise ball (Igot mine at “Walley World” for about $10). Itis preferable if you can find one with an insertthat prevents it from excessive rolling.

As in the first picture, sit on the ball whilebouncing up and down. This not only flexes themuscles of the thighs, but also loosens andwarms up the knees.

Maintain the sitting position, roll the ball up onthe back of the heels, and continue bouncing.

This will stretch the Achilles tendons, andmuscles in the calf.

By moving the feet out from the ball, you cannow begin some supported squats. The keyword here is “supported”, and unlike ordinarysquats, you are in total control throughout theentire range of motion. If you have knee issues, this exercise should be helpful.

After finishing your squats, push backwardsand allow your back to bend over the ball. Thisaligns the back and feels really good.

Now it is time to change position. Mount theball by first placing your forearms on top of theball then moving forward until you can placeyour hands on the floor.

Do an easy press up while raising the legs. Thishelps strengthens the muscles of the lowerback.

Move the hands out from the ball and doanother press up, arching the back. The moreyour move your hands away from the ball, themore difficult the press up.

Move the hands again and press up. This onewill be the most difficult, and will allow for amaximum stretch of the back.

After the last press up, work your way back, roll the ball up on the thighs. With the feetcrossed (as in Zanshin position), hug the balland roll back. This will produce a controlledstretch of the ankles and knees. After doingthis maneuver for a week I am able to sitcomfortably in Zanshin for the first time inyear.

You can adjust the above set to meet yourneeds and repeat as needed. I love theseexercises and hope you will also.

Reviews

Ican remember a time when few books onthe subject of martial arts were availableto the general public. When Master Harold

Long allowed me to borrow a book by MasOyama, I was amazed. It was as if there weremore than one Superman alive on the earth.

As years passed, and I became more interestedin the true roots of the art I was practicing, itstill was difficult to locate useful resources. AsGeorge Patton once wrote, it was ...”so asthrough a glass and darkly” that notions of ourhistorical development slowly emerged.

Iain Abernethy

Now we are living in the information age, andresources are seemingly endless. Recently, several interesting avenues have come to light.First is a book by Iain Abernethy entitled,“Bunkai Jutsu; The Practical Application of

Karate Kata”. If you are interested in how tologically proceed in developing usable bunkaifor you kata, this book is invaluable. IainSensei is basically offering a book that teachesyou how to think about kata. It is available online from Amazon, either as a standard cover,or as an E-book.

Next is a video documentary available (forfree) on You Tube. It is entitled “Tee” andfollows the adventures of two Westerners whotravel to Okinawa to train in karate. Thecamera work is excellent, and the videos offersome rare insights into training in the old way. Thanks to my student, Ross Mattingly forbringing this to my attention.

Finally, Google, “The Karate Tapestry” aseries of articles by Robert Hunt. I have to say, sensei Hunt writes very well. His views on thedevelopment of karate, and of the variousmasters who made that history are sometimescontroversial, but his viewpoints are wellresearched. Best of all, he is not onlyinformative, but very readable. I suggest thatyou begin with essay Number 10. There is anugget of information therein that is trulygolden. Enjoy.

TOKA News

Early in December, Jan and I headed North. Our destination was Salem, Illinois, where

we had been invited by Master Ed Daniels to sitwith him on a testing board. Along the way westopped in Clarksville, Tn. where we enjoyed afine meal with Sensei Dave Fivecoat and someof his students. This is an excellent group, andJan and I felt very welcome and had a fine time.We feel very fortunate having Dave san and hisoutstanding dojo with us as we develop ourTOKA family traditions.

After spending the night in Clarksville, wewere off to Illinois. The road was straight andflat, past miles of well laid out farmland. Salemturned out to be a very friendly small town, where everyone seemed to know each other. We felt right at home.

Testing began early. We were permitted to sitwith a distinguished board which included notonly Master Daniels, but also the legendaryMaster Ron Reed. Those being tested includedPeter Daniels (Ed’s son), Stephanie Sullens,

Macy Sullens, and Katiesha Benson testing foryudansha ranking, along with a handful ofstudents going for advanced kyu ranks. Thetest itself was comprehensive, and I have to saythat everyone did an excellent job. Inparticular, Stephanie Sullens exhibited greattoughness and fighting spirit. The ceremonywhere belts were awarded was emotional andimpressive. Being in Ed’s dojo and watchingthe students perform was a great experience forus. Please see Ed’s column below for thelisting of those who participated.

After returning to Georgia, we headed up toAthens, home of the University of Georgia toenjoy an exhibition of Samurai art. I would liketo thank our friend Shihan-dai MichaelHoffman of Soke Ruiz’s IKKU, whose facebook posting alerted us to the display on theUGA campus. I hope the pictures below canconvey the unbelievable craftsmanship and artof the weapons, helmets, and armor that was ondisplay. It was awe inspiring.
